성 프란치스코의 첫 동료 뀐따발레의 베르나르도

성 프란치스코는 이미 세상을 끊어버렸으나 아직 세속 옷을 그대로 입고 있었다. 그는 보속으로 고행을 하여 아주 초췌한 모습으로 다니기 때문에 많은 이들에게 정신병자로 취급되어, 친척이건, 천척이 아니건 모두가 다 욕설을 퍼붓고 돌멩이와 흙덩이를 집어던지며 그를 쫓아버렸다. 성인은 이 모든 모욕에도 마치 귀먹은 벙어리 인양 강한 인내심으로 모우 참아 받았다.

그 당신 아씨시에 거주하는 베르나르도라는 사람은 거 거리에서도 손꼽히는 귀족이고 재산가며 슬기로운 사람이었는데 이처럼 가혹한 세상의 멸시와 온갖 곤욕을 꿋꿋이 견뎌내는 성인의 그 큰 인내심을 보고, 또 뭇 사람들처럼 자기도 2년 동안을 미워하고 업신여겨온 이 사람이, 항상 조용하고 잘 인내해 내는 것을 알고는 틀림없이 이 성 프란치스코야말로 하느님의 크나큰 은총을 받고 있다고 단정하게 되어, 자기 집으로 오셔서 저녁식사나 좀 하고 묵어가시라고 성인에게 간청했다. 성 프란치스코는 이 청을 받아들여 그날 저녁에 베르나르도와 함께 저녁식사를 하고 거기에서 자게 되었다.

베르나르도는 이 손님의 성덕이 어느 정도인가 시험하려는 의도로 자기 침실에 특별히 침대를 하나 더 마련하여 성인께 주며 남포등도 밤새도록 켜 두게 하였다.

성인은 자기의 성덕을 감추기 위하여 방에 들어오자마자 곧 침대에 뛰어들어 잠든 체하였다.

조금 후에 베르나르도도 똑같이 침대에 들어가 큰소리로 코를 골며 깊은 잠에 빠진 척하자. 성 프란치스코는 베르나르도가 정말 잠자는 줄로 믿고 살며시 일어나 눈과 손을 하늘로 높이 들어 지극히 큰 경건과 타오르는 열정으로 “나의 하느님, 나의 하느님”하고 부르면서 기도하기 시작했다.

성 프란치스코는, 타락한 이 세상을 불쌍히 여기시어 황송하옵게도 자신을 낮추어 오사 작고 가난한 프란치스코 자신뿐만 아니라, 다른 사람들의 구원도 베풀어 주시려는 전능하신 하느님의 자비를 생각하며 감탄한 나머지 이 말만 한 것이다.

그때 예언자와 같이 하느님께서 자기와 자기의 수도회를 통하여 이룩하시려는 놀라운 일들을 예건하고, 또 자기의 무능력함과 보잘것없음을 깊이 생각해 볼 때 나약한 인간의 힘만으로는 도저히 안되며, 성인 자신이 이룰 수 없는 이 일을 오직 하느님께서 자비와 전능으로 대신하여 성취시켜 주시기를 울면서 애원했다.

베르나르도는 남포등 불빛을 통해 성령에 감동된 프란치스코의 행동을 지켜보았다. 그리고 그의 입가로 흘러나오는 기도 소리를 묵묵히 생각해 보는 동안에 성령의 감동을 받아 마침내 자기 생활을 바꾸고 싶은 마음이 생겼다.

아침에 그는 성 프란치스코에게 “저는 세속을 버리고 무엇이나 명하시는 대로 당신을 따라갈 것을 굳게 제 마음속에 결심했습니다.”하고 말했다. 이 말에 성 프란치스코는 속으로 크게 기뻐했지만 이렇게 말했다. “베르나르도씨, 당신이 말씀하신 것은 매우 크고 어려운 일이니 이 일에 관해서 주 예수 그리스도의 가르침을 반드시 알아보아야 합니다. 그러면 그분께서 친히 그분의 뜻을 우리에게 보여주시고, 또 어떻게 우리가 그 일을 해야 할지 가르쳐 주실지도 모릅니다. 그러니 함께 주교관으로 가십시다. 그곳에 훌륭한 신부 한분이 계십니다. 그 신부님께 미사 한 대를 드려 달라고 부탁드리고, 미사참례를 한 후에 삼시경(오전 9시 기도)까지 기도합시다. 그러고 나서 미사경본을 세 번 펼쳐볼 때에 그 열린 부분에서 우리가 택해야 할 주님의 뜻을 계시해 주시도록 기도합시다.”

베르나르도도 그게 좋겠다고 대답하므로 둘이서 길을 떠나 주교관까지 갔다. 미사참례를 하고 삼시경까지 기도한 후에 신부님은 성 프란치스코의 청에 따라 미사경본을 들고, 십자성호를 그은 다음 우리 주 그리스도의 이름으로 그것을 세 번 열었다.

첫 번에는 복음성경 중에 그리스도께서 완덕의 길에 관하여 질문해온 청년에게 하신 말씀이 나왔다. “당신이 완전한 사람이 되려거든 가서 당신의 재산을 다 팔아 가난한 사람들에게 모두 나누어 주시오. 그런 다음 와서 나를 따르시오”(마태 19,21).

두 번째로 펴니 그리스도께서 사도들을 전교하러 보내시면서 분부하신 말씀이 나왔다. “길을 떠날 때 아무것도 가지고 가지 마시오. 지팡이나 식량자루도 가지고 다니지 말고 신발이나 돈도 가지고 다니지 마시오”(루가 9,3). 주님은 이것으로써 먹고 마시는 걱정을 하느님께 맡기고 거룩한 복음을 전하는 이외의 딴 마음을 먹어서는 안된다고 가르치신 것이다.

마지막 세 번째로 펀 미사경본에는 다음과 같은 그리스도의 말씀이 씌어 있었다. “나를 따르려고 하는 사람은 누구든지 자기 자신을 버리고 제 십자가를 지고 따라야합니다”(마태 16,24).

마침내 성 프란치스코는 베르나르도에게 ‘이것이 바로 그리스도께서 우리에게 주시는 권고입니다. 그러니 가서 지금 들으신 바를 모두 실행하십시오. 황송하게도 우리에게 복음의 길을 가르쳐주신 우리 주 예수 그리스도께 기쁨이 되기를바랍니다“ 하고 말하였다.

부자인 베르나르도는 이 말을 듣자 기꺼이 모든 재산을 다 팔아 가난한 이와 과부들, 또는 고아, 순례자, 수도원, 병원에 모두 나누어 주었다. 이 모든 일을 처리하는 데 있어서 성 프란치스코는 충실하고 지혜롭게 그를 도왔다.

그렇지만 실베스텔이라고 부르는 한 사람은 성 프란치스코가 그와같이 막대한 돈을 가난한 사람들에게 나누어 주는 것을 보고 탐욕에 눈이 어두워져 성 프란치스코에게 이렇게 말하였다. “성당을 수리하면서 나에게서 사간 돌 값을 아직 다 갚지 않으셨는데 지금 당신이 돈을 갖고 계시니 마저 주시오”하였다.  성 프란치스코는 욕심에 찬 이 말에 자못 놀랐으나 참으로 복음을 실행하는 자로서 겸손하게 베르나르도의 주머니 속에서 돈을 몇 움큼 두둑이 꺼내주며 더 필요하면 더 주겠노라고 말하였다. 실베스텔은 이에 만족하여 집으로 돌아갔다.

집에 돌아온 실베스텔은 그날 밤 낮에 겪은 일을 곰곰이 생각할수록, 자기의 욕심장이 소행이 마음을 못견디게 괴롭혔고 그제야 베르나르도의 열심과 성 프란치스코의 성덕을 깊이 생각해 보았다. 더구나 그날 밤뿐만 아니라 이튿날 밤에도 연거푸 하느님은 다음과 같은 환시를 그에게 보여 주셨다. 즉 성 프란치스코의 입에서 금으로 만든 십자가가 튀어나와 그 맨 위가 하늘에까지 높이 닿았고, 양 끝은 동쪽에서 서쪽까지 쭉 뻗어갔었다.

이 환시가 나타난 결과로 그는 자기가 가졌던 모든 것을 하느님을 위하여 내버리고 작은 형제가 되었다. 그리하여 이 형제회에서도 드문 성덕과 성총의 소유자가 되었는데 마치 친구를 대하듯이 하느님과 서로 이야기했다는 것은 성 프란치스코가 여러번 증언한 적이 있고, 또 이 글에도 차차로 나올 것이다.

베르나르도 역시 하느님께로부터 성총을 많이 입어 하느님을 묵상하는 중에 자주 탈혼되었다. 성 프란치스코도 그에 대해 자주 말하기를 “참으로 한 몸에 모든 존경을 지닐 만한 자격이 있는 사람이며, 사실 그가 형제회를 세울 것”이라고 했는데, 그 까닭은 그가 아무것도 남김없이 세속을 버리고 가지고 있던 모든 것을 그리스도의 가난한 이들에게 나누어 주었고, 십자가에 못박히신 분의 두 팔에 벌거벗은 채로 자신을 바치면서 성 프란치스코를 따라 복음적 가난을 시작한 첫 사람이기 때문이다.

주: 이 에피소는 아마도 1209년에 있었던 것 같다. 우리는 베르나르도의 저택이 있는 곳을 알고 있는데 그곳은 아시시의 광장과 주교관 근처다. 그래서 다음날 두 사람은 주교를 방문할 수 있었다.

 

2. About the Perfect Conversion of Brother Bernard

Among them the first and the first-born, both by priority in time and by privilege of sanctity, was Brother Bernard of Assisi, whose conversion took place in the following way.

St. Francis was still dressed as a layman, although he had already renounced the world, and for a long time he had been going around Assisi looking contemptible and so mortified by penance that many people thought he was simple-minded, and he was laughed at as a lunatic and driven away with many insults and stones and mud by his relatives and by strangers. Yet being nourished by the divine salt and firmly established in peace of soul by the Holy Spirit, he bore all the insults and scorn with great patience and with a joyful ｅxpression on his face, as if he were deaf and dumb.

Now the Lord Bernard of Assisi, who was one of the richest and wisest noblemen in the whole city, whose judgment everyone respected, wisely began to think over St. Francis's utter contempt for the world and his great patience when he was insulted and the fact that although he had been scorned and despised by everybody for two years, he always appeared more serene and patient. He began to think and to say to himself: "This Francis certainly must have great graces from God."
So inspired by the Lord, he invited St. Francis to have supper with him one evening. The Saint humbly accepted and ate supper with him that evening.

But the Lord Bernard secretly wished and planned to put St. Francis' holiness to a test, so he invited him to sleep in his house that night. And when St. Francis humbly agreed, the Lord Bernard had a bed prepared in his own room, in which a lamp was always kept burning at night.

Now St. Francis, as soon as he entered the room, in order to conceal the divine graces which he had, immediately threw himself down on the bed, showing that he wished to sleep. But the Lord Bernard planned to watch him secretly during the night. And he too soon lay down, and he used such cunning that after he had rested in bed a while, he pretended to be sleeping soundly, and he began to snore loudly.
Therefore St. Francis, who faithfully concealed the secrets of God, when he thought that the Lord Bernard was fast asleep, during the first part of the night, got out of bed and began to pray. Looking up to Heaven and raising his hands, he prayed with intense fervor and devotion, saying: "My God and my all!"" And he sobbed out those words with so many tears and kept repeating them with such devout persistence that until matins he said nothing but "My God and my all!"

St. Francis said this while contemplating and marveling at the goodness of Almighty God who seemed to take compassion on the imperiled world and was preparing to provide a remedy for its salvation through the little poor man Francis himself. For being enlightened by the spirit of prophecy, when he foresaw the great things which God was to accomplish through his Order, and when under the guidance of that same spirit he considered his own incapacity and small degree of virtue, he called upon the Lord in order that God, without whom human weakness can achieve nothing, should by His compassion and almighty power supply, assist, and accomplish what he himself would not be capable of doing. And that is why he said: "My God and my all!"

Now the Lord Bernard saw the very inspiring actions of St. Francis by the light of the lamp burning there. And while he was attentively meditating on the words which the Saint was saying and carefully observing his devotion, he was touched by the Holy Spirit in the depths of his heart and felt inspired to change his life.
Therefore when morning came, he called St. Francis and said to him: "brother Francis, I have definitively resolved in my heart to leave the world and to follow you in whatever you order me to do."

When St. Francis heard this, he rejoiced in spirit and said: "Lord Bernard, what you say is so great and difficult an undertaking that we must seek the advice of Our Lord Jesus Christ concerning it, so that He Himself may deign to show us His will regarding it and teach us how we should carry it out. So let us go together to the Bishops' Church where there is a good priest, and we will have him say Mass, and after hearing it, we will pray there until tierce. And in our prayer we will ask the Lord Jesus Christ to deign to show us in three openings of the Lore Jesus Christ to deign to show us in three openings of the missal the way which He wants us to choose." And the Lord Bernard replied that this pleased him a great deal.

They therefore went to the Bishop's Church. And after they had heard Mass ad had prolonged their prayers until tierce, the above-mentioned priest took up the missal at the request of St. Francis and the Lord Bernard. And having made the Sign of the Cross, he opened it three times in the name of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
At the first opening there appeared the words that Christ said in the Gospel to the young man who asked Him about the way of perfection: "If you wish to be perfect, go, sell all you have, and give to the poor, and come, follow Me."

At the second opening there appeared those words which Christ said to the Apostles, when He sent them out to preach: "Take nothing for your journey, neither staff, nor wallet, nor bread, nor money," wishing thereby to teach them that they should place all their hope for support in God and concentrate entirely on preaching the Holy Gospel.

At the third opening of the missal there appeared those words which Christ said: "If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me."

And when they had seen these words, St. Francis said to the Lord Bernard: "That is the counsel which Christ gives us. So go ad do perfectly what you have heard. And blessed be Our Lord Jesus Christ who has deigned to show us His Gospel way of life!"

On hearing this, the Lord Bernard immediately went and brought out all his possessions and sold all that he owned-and he was very rich. And with great joy he distributed it all to the poor. Carrying the money in pocket in his bosom, he gave it out plentifully and generously to widows and orphans and pilgrims and monasteries and hospitals. And in all this St. Francis accompanied him and faithfully assisted him.
Now when a man named Lord Silvester saw St. Francis giving away so much money to the poor and causing it to be given away, he was seized with greed and said to St. Francis: "You did not pay me all you owe me for those stones you bought from me to repair the churches." Then St. Francis, marveling at his greed and not wishing to argue with him, as a true observer of the Gospel-giving to everyone who asked-put his hands in the Lord Bernard's bosom and then placed them filled with money, in the Lord Silvester's bosom. And he said: "If you ask for more, I will give you still more." But he was satisfied and went home.

Later that evening when he thought over what he had done during the day he reproached himself for his greed and reflected on the fervor of the Lord Bernard and the holiness of St. Francis. And on the first and the second and the third night he was given this vision form God: from the mouth of St. Francis came forth a cross of gold, the top of which reached to Heaven, while its arms seemed to extend from east to west, to the end of the world. As a result of this vision he was touched by the Lord, and for God's sake he disposed of all his property and gave it away to the poor. And later he became a Friar Minor, and in the Order he was so holy and filled with grace that he spoke with God as one friend to another, as St. Francis several times experienced and as will be narrated hereafter.

Similarly the Lord Bernard, after he had given all his property away for God, received so much grace from God that he was often rapt in contemplation by the Lord. And St. Francis used to say of him that he was worthy of all reverence, and that it was he who had founded this Order, because he was the first who had begun to live the poverty of the Gospel by distributing all he had to the poor, retaining nothing whatever for himself, but offering himself naked to the arms of the Crucified. May He be blessed by us forever and ever! Amen.
