제 3장 성 프란치스코가 베르나르도 형제에 대하여

 

 

제 3장

성 프란치스코가 베르나르도 형제에 대하여 나쁜 생각을 품었을 때 베르나르도 형제에게 명하여 자기 목과 입을 세 번 밟게 한일

십자가에 못박히신 그리스도의 가장 헌신적인 종, 성 프란치스코는 심한 보속과 그치지 않는 눈물로 불빛이나 겨우 알아볼 정도로 거의 소경이 되었다. 하루는 하느님에 관해 이야기를 나누고 싶어서 자기가 있는 곳을 떠나 베르나르도가 있는 수도원으로 갔다. 그곳에 도착하니 베르나르도는 숲속에서 기도를 드리는 중이었고, 온통 하느님께로 들어올려져 하느님과 일치해 있었다.

잠시 후 성인은 전과 같이 두 번, 세 번 불러보았으나, 여전히 그 소리를 듣지 못하여 대답이 없었고, 성인 곁으로 오지도 않았다. 그래서 성 프란치스코는 기분이 좀 상한 채 물러나와 속으로 이상히 여기고 세 번씩이나 불렀는데도 베르나르도 형제가 오지 않아 마음이 언짢았다. 왜냐하면 베르나르도 형제가 하느님과 이야기하는 특은을 남달리 받고 있음을 성 프란치스코도 자주 증언한 바 있고 그러기에 그와 더불어 이야기하기를 간절히 원했던 것이다.

성 프란치스코는 곰곰이 생각하면서 조금 가다가 자기 동료에게 “여기 좀 기다려 주시오”하고 말하고는, 근처 외딴 곳으로 가서 왜 베르나르도 형제가 자기한테 대답하지 않았는지 알려주시도록 하느님께 간청하며 기도드렸다. 이때 한 음성이 하늘로부터 들려왔다. “이 불쌍하고 작은 사람아, 어찌하여 고민하느냐? 사람이 피조물 때문에 하느님을 저버려야 하느냐? 네가 부르던 베르나르도 형제는 나에게 완전히 사로잡혀 있었으므로 너에게 갈 수도 없었고 대답할 수도 없었다. 그러니 그가 대답하지 못한 것을 이상히 여기지 말라, 그는 너무도 나에게 몰입하여 정신이 없었으므로, 네 부르는 소리를 전혀 듣지 못했다.”

이와같은 하느님의 대답을 듣자 성 프란치스코는 자기 마음속에 방금 품었던 나쁜 생각을 겸손히 말하려고 베르나르도 형제에게 즉시 돌아갔다.

자기에게 오고 있는 스승을 보자 베르나르도 형제는 달려와 그 발아래 엎드렸다. 성 프란치스코는 그를 일어나도록 하여 그에게 관한 자기가 가졌던 생각들과 번민들을 겸손히 말해주고, 또 하느님께서 기도하는 중에 그것들에 대해 자기를 꾸짖으셨다고 하고나서 “거룩한 순명으로 형제에게 명하노니 내가 앞으로 지시하는 일을 실행하여 주시오”하고 말을 맺었다.

베르나르도 형제는 성인이 늘 하시던 대로 과도한 일이나 명하는 것이 아닌가 두려워, 되도록 이러한 순명을 피하고 싶었다. 그래서 “만일 사부님께서도 제가 이제 말씀드리는 일을 실행하신다고 약속해 주시면 저도 기꺼이 순명하겠습니다.”라고 대답하였다.

성 프란치스코가 그러겠다고 약속하므로 그는 “사부님, 제가 무엇을 해드려야 합니까?”라고 말하자, 성 프란치스코는 다음과 같이 말했다. “거룩한 순명으로 명합니다. 내가 지금 땅바닥에 똑바로 누울 것이니, 내 주책없고 뻔뻔스러운 마음을 벌할 수 있도록, 한쪽 발로는 내 목을, 또 다른 발로는 내 입을 딛고, 한쪽에서 다른쪽으로 세 번 가로넘으면서 창피를 주고 욕을 하십시오. 특히 ’여기 누워 있는 야비한 놈, 베드로 베르나르도의 자식아, 피조물 중에서 가장 못된 네놈이 어쩌면 그렇게 교만하냐?‘ 하고 나에게 말하십시오.”

베르나르도는 그건 너무 심한 일이라고 생각했지만 이 말을 듣고 거룩한 순명 때문에 도도록 정중하게 성 프란치스코가 명하는 대로 행하였다.

그 일이 끝나자 성 프란치스코는 “내가 순명한다고 약속했으니 이제 형제가 내게 시킬 일을 명하시오”하니 베르나르도 형제는 “언제든지 우리가 함께 있게 될 때에 사부님은 제 결점을 엄중히 책망하고 고쳐주십시오, 이것을 거룩한 순명의 이름으로 명합니다.”라고 말했다.

그러나 성 프란치스코는 이에 깜짝 놀랐다. 베르나르도 형제는 성덕이 높은 사람이었으므로 성 프란치스코 자신도 큰 존경심을 품고 있었으며, 조금도 흠잡을 데가 없다고 생각하고 있었기 때문이다.

성 프란치스코는 그가 위대한 성덕의 소유자임을 알았고 또 이 순명의 약속 때문에, 무슨 결점을 고쳐주는 말을 하게 되는 일이 혹시라도 생기지 않도록 그와 함께 너무 오래 있게 되는 것을 조심스레 피했다.

그래서 성인이 베르나르도 형제가 보고 싶거나. 또는 하느님께 관하여 그가 하는 말을 듣고 싶을 때는 될 수 있는 대로 빨리 헤어지든지 그 자리를 떠났다. 큰 사랑과 존경과 겸손 중에 성 프란치스코가 자기의 맏아들인 베르나르도 형제를 대하거나 말하는 것을 볼 때마다 누구나 큰 감화를 받았다.

주: 이 에피소드는 1220년 이후에 있었던 것 같다. 에집드와 성지에서 돌아온 성 프란치스코는 눈병을 얻었다. 그 장소는 아시시에서 7Km떨어진 "까르체리"의 은수처이다.

 

 

 

 

 

3. About the Humility and Obedience of St. Francis and Brother Bernard


Francis, the devout servant of Christ Crucified, had become almost blind, so that he could see very little, as a result of his severe penances and continual crying.
One day he left the Place where he was and went to a Place where Brother Bernard was staying, in order to speak about God with him. And when he came to the Place, he found that Bernard was praying n the woods, completely absorbed in holy contemplation and united with God.
Then St. Francis went into the woods and called him, saying: "Come and talk to this blind man!"
But Brother Bernard did not answer St. Francis and did not go to him because, as he was a great contemplative, his consciousness was at that moment suspended and uplifted in God.
Brother Bernard had a remarkable ability to speak about God, as St. Francis had already experienced many times, and that was why he wanted very much to talk to him . So after a while he called him again a second and a third time, repeating the same words: "Come and talk to this blind man." But Brother Bernard did not hear him at all and so he did not answer him or go to him. Therefore St. Francis went away, feeling rather disappointed, wondering and almost complaining within himself that Brother Bernard, though called by him three times, had not wanted to come to him.
While St. Francis was thinking that way as he returned along the path, he said to his companion when he had gone a short distance: "Wait here for me a moment!" And he went to a solitary spot nearby and began to pray, begging God to reveal to him why Brother Bernard had not answered him. And as he was praying, a Voice came to him from God that said: "And why are you troubled, you poor little man? Should a man leave God because of any creature? Brother Bernard, when you called him, was united with Me, and so he could not go to you or answer you. Therefore do not be surprised if he could not talk to you, because he was so unconscious of his surroundings that he did not hear you at all."
As soon as St. Francis had received this answer form God, he immediately went back toward Brother Bernard in a great hurry, in order humbly to accuse himself of the thoughts he had just had against him.
But the holy Brother Bernard, seeing him coming, ran to meet him and threw himself down at his feet. And the humility of St. Francis and the charity and reverence of Brother Bernard came together. Then St. Francis made him get up and told him very humbly about the thoughts and anxiety which he had regarding him, and how God had reproved him for it, And he ended thus: "Under holy obedience I order you to do whatever I command you."
Brother Bernard was afraid that St. Francis might order something excessive, as he often did, and he wanted to escape from that obedience as best he could. So he replied: "Father, I am ready to obey you, if you also promise me to do what I command you."
St. Francis replied: "I agree."
Then Brother Bernard said: "Say what you want me to do, Father."
And St. Francis said: "In order to punish my presumption and the insolence of my heart, I command you under holy obedience, while I lie on my back on the ground, to put one of your feet on my throat and the other on my mouth, and thus to step over me three times from one side to the other. And while stepping on me that way, you are to insult and mock me, and especially you are to say: 'Lie there, you country lout, son of Pietro 야 Bernardone!' And you must inflict still greater insults on me, saying: 'How is it that you have so much pride, since you are such an extremely worthless creature?'"
When Brother Bernard heard this, it was hard for him to do it. However, because of holy obedience, he performed as courteously as he could what St. Francis had commanded him to do.
And when it was done, St. Francis said: "Now, Brother Bernard, order me to do what you want me to do, because I have promised to obey you."
Brother Bernard said: "Under holy obedience I command you that whenever we are together you scold and correct me harshly for my faults."
When St. Francis heard this, he was very much surprised, because Brother Bernard was so holy that St. Francis had great reverence for him and did not think that he should be corrected at all.
And henceforth St. Francis avoided staying too long with him, so that on account of that obedience he should not have to speak a word of correction to him whom he knew to be so saintly. But though he longed to see Brother Bernard or to hear him speak of God, he would leave him and go away as soon as he could. And it was wonderful to see how certain conflicts took place in the revered Father and in his first-born son, Brother Bernard, especially how the obedience and charity and the patience and humility of each came into conflict. But it was also very inspiring to see the affection and awe and humility with which St. Francis treated and spike to Brother Bernard.
