십자가에 못박히신 우리 주 예수 그리스도와

주님의 모친 동정 마리아의 이름으로,

예수 그리스도의 영광스러운 기수,

작고 가난한 사부 성 프란치스코를 비롯하여

여러 동료들의 기적과 덕행들이

아름다운 잔 꽃송이가 되어 이 책에 피어 있다.

제 1장

성 프란치스코의 첫 열 두 동료

영광스러우신 성 프란치스코 사부님은 그 일생이 모든 점에서 주 그리스도와 닮았다는 것을 먼저 생각해야 한다. 그리스도께서 전교를 시작하실 때, 열 두 사도를 부르시어 세속의 모든 것을 멸시하고 가난함과 그밖에 여러 가지 덕행 중에 당신을 따르라 하신 것과 같이, 성 프란치스코가 형제회를 세울 때에도 지극히 고귀한 가난에 자신을 아낌없이 희생한 열 두 동료를 선택하셨다.

또 그리스도의 열 두 사도 중 한 사람이 하느님으로부터 버림받아 마지막에는 목매어 죽었듯이, 성 프란치스코의 열 두 동료중 하나인 까뻴라의 요한이라는 사람도 변절해서 마침내는 목매어 스스로 목숨를 끊었다.

하느님의 성총 안에서 선행을 끝까지 계속하기란 아무도 장담할 수 없는 것임을 생각할 때 이와같은 일은 뽑힌 자들에게 좋은 본보기가 되는 것으로 누구나 다 항상 겸손하고 두려워해야 하는 법이.

그리고 저 거룩한 사도들이 성스럽고 성령에 가득차 있었듯이, 성 프란치스코의 동료들도 사도시대 이후에 다시 찾아볼 수 없은 만큼 훌륭한 사람들이며 성인들로서 성덕이 높은 분들이었다. 그 예로 에지디오 형제는 성 바오로처럼 제3천(제3층 하늘)에 까지 마음이 끌리어 올라가 탈혼에 빠졌으며, 또 필립보론지노 형제는 아시야 선지자 경우같이 천사가 나타나서 타는 숯불을 그의 입술에 대었던 것이다. 뿐만 아니라 실베스텔 형제는 선지자 모세 모양 하느님과 친구처럼 이야기하였고, 또 어떤이는 꿰뚫는 예지의 힘으로 마치 저 요한 사도를 다시 보는 듯 독수리같이 나래쳐서 천상지혜의 광채에까지 도달하였다. 이분이 바로 성경해석에도 해박한 지식을 가지고 있었고, 또 지극히도 겸손했던 베르나르도 형제였다.

이외에도 다른이는 하느님에 의해 성화되어 벌써 이 세상에 있을 때에 천국의 성인품에 올라 있었는데, 곧 아씨시의 귀족 루피노 형제가 바로 그런 사람이다. 이와같이 그들은 모든 성인들에게서 볼 수 있는 특별한 성덕의 은총을 받고 있었다.

제2장에서부터 이런 사실들이 명료하게 언급된다.

주: 성 프란치스코가 " 그리스도의 완전한 모방자"였다는 생각은 성 프란치스코의 모든 전기에서 찾아볼 수 있다. 이것은 그의 영성에 있어 근본적인 사상이다(회칙 2,1). 본장은 성인이 그리스도를 닮았다는 점을 강조하고 있다. 예를 들면 성 프란치스코가 회칙의 승인을 얻기 위해 로마에 갔을 때, 예수님이 12사도들을 복음 전파하도록 파견하신 것처럼, 성 프란치스코는 자신을 포함하여 12명이 함께 갔다는 것을 알 수 있디; 베르나르도, 카타니아의 베드로, 에지디오, 사바띠노, 모르꼬 까뻴라의 요한, 바르바르, 필립보론지노, 산 고스탄죠의 요한, 비질란지오의 베르나르도, 안젤로 탄그레도.

1. Some Marvelous Deeds of St. Francis and His First Companions

1. About the Twelve First Companions of St. Francis

First it should be known that the glorious St. Francis was conformed to Christ in all the acts of his life. For just as the Blessed Christ, when He began His preaching, chose twelve Apostle to despise all things of this world and to follow Him in poverty and in the other virtues, so St. Francis, when he began to found the Order, had twelve chosen companions who were followers of the most complete poverty.

And just as one of the twelve Apostles of Christ, being rejected by God, in the end hanged himself by the neck, so one of the twelve companions of St. Francis, whose name was Brother Giovanni di Capella, left the Order, and in the end hanged himself by the neck with a rope. To the elect this is a great lesson and reason for humility and fear when they reflect that no one is certain of persevering to the end in the grace of God.

And just as those holy Apostles were for the whole world marvels of holiness, filled with the Holy Spirit, so these most holy companions of St. Francis were men of such sanctity that the world has not had such wonderful and holy men from the times of the Apostles until now. For one of them was caught up to the third heaven like St. Paul, and that was Brother Giles. Another-tall Brother philip-was touched on the lips by an angel with burning coal, like Isaias the Prophet. Another-Brother Silvester, a very pure virginal soul-spoke with God as one friend with another, as Moses did. Another, by the keenness of his mind, soared up to the light of divine wisdom, like the eagle (John the Evengelist)-and this was the very humble Brother Bernard, who used to explain Holy Scripture in a most profound way. Another was sanctified by God and canonized in Heaven while he still was living in this world, as though he had been sanctified in his mother's womb- and he was brother Rufino, a nobleman of Assisi and a man most loyal to Christ.

And thus all of them were favored with evident marks of sanctity, as will be reported hereafter.
