제6장 

성 프란치스코가 이 세상을 마칠 때가 오자 베르나르도 형제를 강복하여 자신의 대리자로 정한 일

베르나르도 형제는 대단히 성덕 높은 사람이었으므로 성 프란치스코도 그에게 큰 존경심을 품었고, 또 자주 칭찬하였다. 하루는 성 프란치스코가 경건하게 기도를 드리고 있는데, 하느님께서는 베르나르도 형제가 여러번 마귀의 치열한 공격을 받도록 허락하셨다고 계시해 주셨다. 성인은 아들처럼 사랑하고 있던 이 형제를 퍽 측은히 여겨, 여러 날 동안 눈물을 흘리면서 그를 위해 기도했고 이 형제가 마귀의 많은 시험에서 승리하도록 그리스도께 그를 의탁했다.

성인이 이렇게 기도를 하고 있던 어느날, 하느님께서는 그에게 응답해 주셨다. “프란치스코여, 두려워 말라. 베르나르도 형제가 지금 당하고 있는 시련은 모두 그가 덕을 실천하며, 그 공로의 면류관을 얻도록 하느님께서 허락해 주신 것이다. 최후에는 그가 그 적을 모조리 쳐 이기리니, 그것은 베르나르도 형제가 하느님 왕국의 한 가족이기 때문이다.

이 대답에 성 프란치스코는 넘치는 기쁨을 가슴깊이 느끼며 하느님께 감사드렸다. 그때 이후로 성인은 베르나르도 형제에 대하여 언제나 큰 사랑과 존경을 품게 되었다. 그리고 이 사랑과 존堧?성인이 살아 있는 동안뿐만 아니라, 임종 때에도 그 형제에게 잘 드러냈는데, 성인은 임종이 다가오자 저 성조의 예을 따라. 신심깊은 자기 아들이 사랑하는 자기 아버지를 이별하는 설움에 복받쳐서 눈물을 글썽이며 둘러섰을 때 “내 아들이 어디 있습니까? 나에게 오시오, 죽기 전에 내 영혼이 형제에 강복하겠습니다”하고 말했다.

그 말에 베르나르도 형제는 수도회의 총장이던 엘리아 형제에게 가서 귓속말로 “총장님, 성인의 오른편에 가서 강복받으십시오”하였다. 엘리아 형제가 성인 오른편에 가자, 너무 울어서 앞을 볼 수 없는 성 프란치스코는 오른손으로 엘리아 형제의 머리를 쓰다듬어 보고 “이것은 내 맏아들 베르나르도 형제의 머리가 아닌데”하고 말했다. 그러므로 베르나르도 형제가 왼편 쪽에 가까이 가니, 성 프란치스코는 그제야 두 팔을 서로 어긋나게 십자가 모양을 하고 오른손은 베르나르도 머리 위에, 왼손은 엘리아 형제 머리에 얹고 베르나르도 형제에게 이렇게 강복했다. “우리 주 예수 그리스도의 아버지이신 성부께서는 온갖 영신적인 것과 천상적 축복을 그리스도를 통하여 형제에게 내리실 것입니다. 형제는 복음적 모범을 보여주고, 복음적 가난 속에서 그리스도를 따르기 위하여 이 거룩한 수도회에 처음으로 뽑히운 사람이었습니다. 형제는 그리스도께 대한 사랑 때문에 재산을 다 내놓아 너그러운 마음으로 가난한 이들에게 전부 나누어 주었을 뿐만 아니라, 더 나아가 이 형제회 안에서 자기 자신마저 감미로운 희생 제물로 하느님께 바쳤습니다. 그러므로 형제는 걸을 때나, 쉴 때나, 또 깨어 있을 때나, 잠을 잘 때나, 살아 있을 때에도, 죽었을 때에도 우리 주 예수 그리스도와 또 그분의 가난하고 작은 종 나에게서 영원한 축복을 받으십시오. 형제를 축복하는 이는 축복으로 가득 채워질 것이요. 형제를 저주하는 자는 형벌을 받지 않고서는 그대로 남아 있지 못할 것입니다. 또 형제는 여러 형제들의 머리가 되며, 모든 형제들이 형제에게 순명할 것입니다. 그리고 형제는 사람들을 이 형제회에 입회시키거나 내보낼 권리가 있습니다. 누구도 형제를 지배할 권리가 없으며, 형제가 원하는 곳이면 어디든지 가서 거할 수 있습니다.”

성 프란치스코께서 세상을 떠난 후 형제들은 베리나르도 형제를 존경하올 아버지로서 사랑하고 섬겼다.

베르나르도 형제의 임종이 가까웠을 무렵 세계 각처에서 수많은 형제들이 모여왔는데, 그중에 저 천사와 같이 거룩한 에지디오 형제는 베르나르도 형제를 보자마자 기쁨에 넘쳐 “마음을 드높이”하고 외쳤다. 거룩한 베르나르도 형제는 비밀리에 한 형제에게 말해서 묵상에 알맞은 장소를 마련하여 에지디오 형제에게 주도록 하였다.

드디어 베르나르도 형제의 최후 순간이 왔을 때, 자기 몸을 일으키게 하고는 주위에 둘러선 형제들에게 다음과 같이 유언하였다. “지극히 사랑하는 형제들이여, 나는 여러분께 많은 말을 하고 싶지 않습니다. 그렇지만 잘 생각해 보십시오, 내가 살아왔던 이 수도생활은 여러분이 현재 살아가고 있습니다. 언젠가는 당신들도 또한 지금의 나와 같이 될 것입니다. 이제 내가 내 영혼 속에서 발견하는 것은 이 세상과 똑같은 세계를 몇 천개 얻는다 해도 우리 주 예수 그리스도밖에는 섬기고 싶지 않다는 것입니다. 지금 나는 모든 잘못을 스스로 인식하며, 우리 주 예수 그리스도와 여러분께 고백합니다. 내 가장 사랑하는 형제들이여, 간절히 바라오니 서로 사랑하십시오.”

이 말고 몇가지 유익한 권고를 하고 다시 침대에 누우니, 그이 얼굴은 이상하게 광채를 내며 기쁨에 싸였다. 이를 본 형제들은 경탄하여 마지않았고, 이 환희 속에서 지극히 거룩한 그의 영혼은 영광의 면류관을 쓰고 현세의 생명에서부터 천사들의 복된 생명에로 옮겨갔다.

주: 성 프란치스코는 1226년에 세상을 떠났다. 이 에피소드는 같은 해에 일어났다. 베르나르도는 작은 형제회에 입회한 최초의 형제였고, 엘리아 형제는 그 당시 형제회의 총장이었다. 이 에피소드는 이 책이 지니고 있는 사상 중의 하나를 반영해주는데, 즉 성 프란치스코 정신의 참된 대표자는 형제회의 총장이 아니라, 최초의 동료들이라는 점이다.

 

 

 

         

6. about the Beautiful Death of Brother Bernard


Brother Bernard was so holy that St. Francis, as long as he lived, had a very affectionate reverence for him, honored him by often talking with him, and in his absence often praised him highly.

One day while St. Francis was prying devoutly, God revealed to him that Divine Providence was to allow Brother Bernard to endure many fierce attacks by devils. For many days, therefore, St. Francis, having great compassion for Brother Bernard, whom he loved as a son, prayed to God for him and wept, committing him to the Lord Jesus Christ, so that He might hive him victory over so many trials of the devil. And while St. Francis was thus prying and watching anxiously and fervently, one day God gave him this answer: “Francis, do not fear, because all the temptations by which Brother Bernard is to be assailed are given to him and permitted by God so that he may practice virtues and earn a crown of merit. And in the end he will win a joy-filled victory over all the enemies that attack him. For this Brother Bernard is one of the great ones of the Kingdom of God.”

St. Francis was made exceedingly happy by this answer, and he gave fervent thanks to the Lord Jesus Christ. And henceforth he no longer had any doubts or fears regarding Brother Bernard, but loved him with ever increasing joy and treated him with still greater affection and reverence.

He showed this affection for him not only during his life but also at the hour of his death. For when St. Francis was dying, like the holy Patriarch Jacob, with his devoted sons standing around him, grieving and weeping over the departure of their beloved father, he asked: “Where is my first born son? Come to me, dear son, so that my soul may bless you before I die.”

Then Brother Bernard whispered to Brother Elias, who was at that time the Vicar of the Order: “Father, go to the Saint’s right hand, so that he may give you his blessing.”

And when Brother Elias had placed himself on the right side, St. Francis, who had lost his sight from too much weeping, put his right hand on Brother Elias’ head and said: “This is not the head of my first-born, Brother Bernard.”

Then Brother Bernard went to his left hand, and St. Francis crossed his arms, and changing the position of his hands, put his left hand on the head of Brother Elias and his right hand on Brother Bernard’s head, and he said to him: “May the Father of my Lord Jesus Christ bless you with every spiritual and heavenly blessing in Christ. And as you were the first one in this holy Order who was chosen to give the example of the Gospel life and to imitate Christ in the poverty of the Gospel –for not only did you generously give up your belongings and distribute them entirely among the poor for the love of Christ, but you also offered yourself up to God as a sweet sacrifice in this Order- so may you be blessed by Our Lord Jesus Christ and by me, His poor little servant, with everlasting blessings, going and coming, watching and sleeping, living and dying. Whoever blesses you shall be filled with blessings, and whoever curses you shall not remain unpunished. Be the head of all your Brothers, and let all the friars obey your orders. You have permission to receive into the Order and to send away from it whomever you wish. And no friar has any power over you. And you are free to go and to stay wherever you wish.

After the death of St. Francis the friars loved and revered Brother Bernard as a venerable father. And when he was dying, many friars came to him from different parts of the world. Among them was that angelic and godlike Brother Giles. When he saw Brother Bernard, he said with great joy: “Sursum corda, Brother Bernard, sursom corda!”

And the saintly Brother Bernard secretly told one of the friars to prepare for Brother Giles a place suitable for contemplation.

And when Brother Bernard came to the last hour of his life, he had them raise him up, and he said to the friars who were standing around him: “My very dear Brothers, I do not want to say much to you. But you must reflect that I have been in the state in which you are now, and that you will be in the state in which I am now. And I find this in my soul: not to have thousand worlds equal to this one would I want not to have served Our Lord Jesus Christ. And I accuse myself to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and to you of all my offenses. My dearest Brothers, I beg you to love one another.”

And after he had said those words and given some other good advice, as he lay back on his bed, his features became very radiant and joyful, to the great amazement of all the friars present. And in that same joy his blessed and most holy soul, crowned with glory, passed from this life to the life of the angels and the blessed in the victory which had previously been promised to him.
