제5장

아씨시의 거룩한 형제 베르나르도가 성 프란치스코의 명을 받들어 볼로냐에 가서 수도원을 세운 이야기

성 프란치스코와 그 제자들은 마음과 행동 속에 그리스도의 십자가를 지고 다니며, 또한 말로써 가르치도록 하느님께로부터 부름받고 뽑힌 사람들이었으므로, 옷차림이나 희생적인 생활이나, 또한 그들의 일거일동이 마치 십자가에 매달린 사람같이 보였고 실제로 그러하였다. 그러기에 그들은 사회적 명예나 존경 혹은 인간이 주는 칭찬을 얻기보다는, 오히려 그리스도에 대한 사랑 때문에 수치와 모욕당하기를 더 열망하여, 갖은 모욕을 기꺼워하는 반면에 존경받는 것을 아주 슬프게 여겼다. 이들은 순례자나 나그네처럼 세상을 돌아다녔으며 십자가에 못박히신 그리스도 이외에는 아무것도 지니지 않았다. 그들은 참 포도나무인 그리스도의 가지들로서 살아가고 있었으므로, 하느님께 바치기 위해 얻는 영혼들 속에서 크고 좋은 열매를 거두어냈다.

형제회를 창설할 때의 일이다. 성 프란치스코는 하느님의 은총으로 좋은 열매를 거두게 하려고 베르나르도 형제를 볼로냐에 보냈다. 베르나르도 형제는 거룩한 순명에 따라서, 성호를 긋고 출발하여 볼로냐에 이르렀다.

아이들은 그가 이상스럽고 남루한 옷차림을 한 것을 보자 미치광이에게 하듯이 조롱하고 욕을 해댔다. 그러나 그는 이 모든 것을 참을성 있게 잘 견디어내며, 그리스도께 대한 사랑 때문에 오히려 기뻐했다. 그뿐 아니라 좀 더 조롱을 당하려고 일부러 광장에 나가 앉았다. 그러자 어른, 아이 할 것없이 우르르 몰려와 구경하더니 어떤 이는 수도복에 달린 모자를 막 잡아당기는데, 또 어떤 이는 그를 앞으로 끌어 잡아 당기고, 또 어떤 이는 흙이나 돌멩이를 집어던지기도 하고, 아니면 이리저리 밀치기도 했다. 그래도 베르나르도 형제는 한마디 불평도 없이 자리를 뜨려고도 하지 않고, 인내심을 갖고 즐거이 그 자리에 그대로 앉아 있었고 단지 이런 모욕을 감수 인내하려고 똑같은 장소에 며칠 동안 계속해서 일부러 나가 앉아 있었다.

인내야말로 완덕의 행위이며 덕의 증거이기에, 그렇게 여러 날 동안 갖가지 모욕과 고통을 당하면서도 전혀 감정이 상하지 않는 그 뛰어난 항구심과 덕을 유심히 바라본 어느 법학박사는 “성인이 아니고서는 저럴 수 없지”하고 속으로 생각했다. 그는 베르나르도 형제에게 다가와 “당신은 누구시며, 왜 여기에 오셨습니까?”하고 물었다. 이에 베르나르도 형제는 자기 가슴에 손을 넣어 성 프란치스코의 회칙을 꺼내 읽어보라고 그 박사에게 주었다.

회칙을 모두 읽어보고, 그것의 숭고한 완덕을 깊이 생각해 보았을 때, 그는 놀라움과 경외심에 차 그의 동료들에게 이렇게 말했다. “이것이야말로 진실로 내가 들어본 중에서 가장 훌륭한 수도생활의 형태입니다. 그러므로 이 분과 이 분의 동료들은 세상에서 가장 거룩한 분들입니다. 이분을 욕하는 자는 죄인 중의 죄인입니다. 이분이야말로 진정한 하느님의 친구이기 때문에. 최대의 공경을 받아 마땅합니다.”

그리고는 그에게 “형제께서 편리하게 하느님을 섬길 수 있는 장소를 제가 보여드릴 터이오니, 만일 승낙하신다면 제 영혼의 구원을 위해 그곳을 기꺼이 희사하겠습니다”라고 말했다. 베르나르도 형제는 “선생님, 저는 당신의 그 호의가 우리 주 예수 그리스도로부터 온 영감이라고 믿으며 그리스도의 영광을 위하여 그것을 기꺼이 수락하겠습니다”라고 대답했다.

이 재판관은 사랑과 기쁨으로 그를 자기 집에 모시고 가 약속한 장소를 인계해 주고 재료 일체도 대어주어 완전히 자기 비용으로 수도원을 건축했다. 그 후 그는 베르나르도 형제의 아버지가 되어 주었고, 또한 베르나르도 형제와 그 동료들의 특별한 보호자가 되었다.

베르나르도 형제는 거룩한 성덕으로 모든이에게 존경을 받아, 그의 몸에 닿거나 그를 바라보는 사람은 누구나 자기를 축복받은 자로 여기기까지 했다. 그러나 그는 그리스도의 겸손한 사도로서, 또 겸손한 프란치스코의 제자로서, 세상의 영예가 자기 영혼의 평온과 구원에 해를 끼치지 않을까 염려하여, 그곳을 떠나 성 프란치스코에게 돌아갔다. 그리고는 성인께 “사부님, 수도원이 볼로나시에 세워졌는데, 저는 이제 그곳에서는 아무 영적인 이익을 얻을 수 없사오니, 다른 형제들을 보내시어 그 수도원에서 살도록 하며 잘 관리하도록 해주십시오. 너무 지나친 존경을 받았기 때문에 얻는 것보다는 잃은 것이 더 많지 않았나 염려하고 있습니다.”

성 프란치스코는 하느님께서 베르나르도 형제를 통하여 이룩하신 일을 하나하나 다 듣고는, 십자가의 가난한 작은 사도들을 널리 퍼뜨리기 시작한 하느님께 감사드렸다. 사부님은 몇 명의 동료들을 볼로냐와 롬바르디아에 보내어 여러 곳에 많은 수도원을 세우게 했다.

주: 성 프란치스코 시대에 볼로냐에는 유럽의 가장 유명한 대학들 중 하나가 있었다. 그 대학은 파리나 옥스포드에 있는 대학들 못지않게 유명했다. 베르나르도 형제를 도와준 박사는 아마 1220년 작은 형제회에 입회한 대학 교수였던 니꼴라오 데이 페룰리인 것 같다.

 

 

 

       

5. How Brother Bernard Went to Bologna

Because St. Francis and his companions had been called by God and chosen to bear the Cross of Christ in their hearts and in their actions and to preach it by their words, they appeared to be and they were crucified men, both as to their habit and their austere life and their deeds and their actions. Therefore they had a greater desire to receive shame and insults for the love of Christ than the vain honors or respect or praise of the world. on the contrary, they rejoiced in being insulted, and they were made sad by being honored. And so they went through the world as pilgrims and strangers, taking with them nothing but Christ Crucified. And because they were living branches of the True Vine, that is Christ, they produced great and good fruit in the souls that they won for God.

Once in the beginning of the Order it happened that St. Francis sent Brother Bernard to Bologna, in order that he might produce fruit for God according to the grace which God had given him. And Brother Bernard, arming himself with the Cross of Christ and taking holy obedience as him companion, made the Sign of the Cross and left and came to Bologna.

When the children saw him in his unusual and contemptible habit, they began to make fun of him and insult him, as they would do with a lunatic. But the truly holy Brother Bernard for the love of Christ. Moreover, in order to follow and be truly conformed to Christ, who made Himself “the reproach of man and the outcast of the people,” he deliberately went to the public square of the city and sat down there so that people would have a better opportunity to make fun of him. While he was sitting there, many boys and men gathered around him, and some of them pulled him back and others forward, and some threw dust at him and others stones, and some pushed him heavily this way and others that way. At all these insults Brother Bernard remained patient and rejoicing, with a happy ｅxpression on his face, and he did not resist or complain at all. Furthermore, he deliberately went back to that same square for several days in order to endure the same mistreatment. And no matter how much they insulted him, his joyful features always showed that his soul was not troubled.

And because patience is a work of perfection and a proof of virtue, a certain learned doctor of laws, seeing and reflecting on Brother Bernard’s constancy and virtue in not being at all disturbed by any injury or insult for so man days, said to himself: “That man certainly must be a saint.” And going up to Brother Bernard he asked him: “Who are you, and why have you come here?”

As his reply Brother Bernard put his hand in his bosom and brought out the Rule of St. Francis, which he bore in his heart and practiced in his deeds, and gave it to him to read.

And when that judge had read it through, reflecting on its lofty state of perfection, he was utterly amazed, for he was an intelligent man. And turning to his companions, he said with the greatest surprise and admiration: “This certainly is the highest form of religious life I have ever heard of! And therefore this man and his companions are some of the holiest men in the world. So those who insult him are committing a very great sin, for he should be given the highest honors rather than insults, as he is a great and true friend of God!”

And he said to Brother Bernard: “My dear man, if I were to show you a place where you could serve God in a suitable way, and you wished to accept it, I would be very glad to give it to you for the salvation of my soul.”

Brother Bernard answered: “Dear Sir, I believe that Our Lord Jesus Christ has inspired you to do this. And so I willingly accept our offer, for the honor of Christ.”

Then the judge led Brother Bernard with great joy and affection to his home. And later he showed him the place which he had promised him and gave it to him, and arranged and prepared it all at his own expense. And henceforth he became a father and a special protector to Brother Bernard and his companions.

And Brother Bernard began to be greatly honored by the people because of his holy conversation, to such a point that those who were able to touch or hear or see him considered themselves blessed. But Brother Bernard, like a true and humble disciple of Christ and the humble Francis, fearing that the worldly honor which was being shown him there might interfere with the peace and salvation of his soul, left and went back to St. Francis.

And he said to St. Francis: “Father, the Place has been founded in the city of Bologna, so send some friars to maintain it and stay there, because I am no longer doing any god there. Rather because of the great honor that is shown me, I am afraid of losing more than I would gain there.”

Then St. Francis, on hearing in detail all that God had performed through Brother Bernard, rejoiced and exulted and began to praise and thank God, who was thus beginning to spread the poor little followers of his companions and sent them to Bologna and Lombardy. And as the devotion of the people toward them increased, they began to accept many Places in various districts.

To the praise and reverence of the good Jesus. Amen,
