제16장

성녀 클라라와 실베스텔 형제가 성 프란치스코께 설교로써 세상 사람을 회개시켜야 한다고 조언한 일. 제3회(재속회)의 시작과 새들에게 설교하고 제비들에게 조용히 해주도록 명한 이야기

그리스도의 겸손한 종, 성프란치스코는 회개한 지 얼마 안되어 벌써 많은 동료들을 모아 형제회에 받아들였으나, 자기는 기도에만 열중할까. 그렇지 않으면 가끔 세속에 나가 설교도 해야할지를 결정짓지 못하여 매우 고심했다. 이 갈림길에 선 성인은 하느님의 성의를 알고 싶어하였지만, 마음속에 깃들인 겸손 때문에 자신이 결정하거나 또는 자기가 직접 기도하여 알아보려고 하지 않고, 다른 사람의 기도 속에서 하느님의 뜻을 찾아보려고 하였다.

그래서 맛세오 형제를 불러 “클라라 자매에게 가서 내가 설교하러 나서는 것과 기도에만 전심하는 것 중, 어느 편이 더 좋은 가를 하느님께서 가르쳐 주시도록, 가장 훌륭한 동료 자매와 같이 정성껏 기도해 달라는 말을 내 이름으로 전달해 주시오. 또 실베스텔 형제에게 찾아가서도 그같이 이르시오”하고 보냈다.

이 실베스텔 형제는 세속에 있을 때에 성 프란치스코의 입으로부터 하늘만큼 높고 지구만큼 넓은 황금 십자가가 튀어나오는 것을 본 사람이다. 그는 매우 믿음이 깊고 성덕이 높아 그가 청하는 것마다 하느님이 다 들어주셨으며, 또 여러번 하느님과 이야기한 일이 있는 그러한 사람이므로 성 프란치스코는 남달리 그에게 신뢰심을 갖고 있었던 것이다.

맛세오 형제는 부탁받은 대로, 먼저 성녀 클라라에게 달려가 말하고, 다음에 실베스텔 형제에게 가서 성 프란치스코의 뜻을 전달했다. 그러자 그 형제는 곧 엎드리어서 기도하였다. 기도중에 하느님으로부터 응답을 받고 맛세오 형제에게 돌아와 다음과 같이 말했다. “내가 지금 말하는 것이 곧 하느님께서 말씀하신 것이니, 그대로 프란치스코 형제에게 가 전하시오. 하느님께서 그분을 지금의 신분으로 부르신 것은 그 자신만을 위한 것이 아니라, 그분을 통하여 많은 삶들을 구원코자 하심입니다.”

맛세오 형제는 실베스텔 형제의 회답을 갖고 성녀 클라라에게 가서 하느님께 계시 받은 것이 있느냐고 묻자, 성녀는 자기와 그동료 자매들이 다 함께 실베스텔 형재가 받은 것과 똑같은 회답을 받았다고 대답하였다.

이와같이 하여 맛세오 형제가 다시 성 프란치스코 앞으로 돌아오니 성인은 그를 큰 사랑으로 매우 정중히 맞아들여 발을 씻기고 식사를 차려내었다. 맛세오 형제가 식사를 다 마치자. 숲속으로 그를 불러 성 프란치스코는 그 앞에 무릎을 꿇고 모자를 벗은 다음 십자가 모양으로 두 팔을 가슴에 앉고 “주 예수 그리스도께서 내게 무어라고 명하셨습니까?”하고 물었다. 맛세오 형제는 대답하기를 “그리스도께서 실베스텔 형제와 클라라 자매와 그 동료 자매에게 대답하시고 계시해 주셨습니다. 그리스도의 뜻은 사부님이 세상에 나가 널리 설교하는 것입니다. 그분께서 사부님을 뽑으신 것은 사부님 한 사람만을 위한 것이 아니라, 동시에 다른이들의 구원을 위한 것이기도 한 것이기 때문입니다” 하였다.

성 프란치스코는 이 회답을 듣고 그리스도의 뜻을 알게 되자, 큰 열정에 북받쳐 벌떡 일어서서, “자, 주님의 이름으로 모두 나갑시다”하고 말하며 거룩한 두 형제, 맛세오와 안젤로를 동반하고 길을 떠났다. 그는 마음속에 끓어오르는 열렬한 충동에 못이겨 산길 발길 가리지 않고 무작정 걸었다.

마침내 간나리오라는 동네에 이르게 된 성 프란치스코는 설교하기 시작했는데, 제비떼가 시끄럽게 지저귀며 날아다니므로 우선 제비떼를 향하여 설교가 끝날 때까지 조용히 해달라고 말하니 제비들은 그 말에 순종하여 아무 소리 없이 날아다니기만 했다. 그러자 성인은 거기서 어찌나 열렬히 설교를 했는지, 그 마을 남녀들은 모두 다 성인을 따르고 싶어 마을을 박차고 성인을 따라 나서려고 야단들이었다. 그러나 성 프란치스코는 그것을 허락지 않고 “성급히 서둘거나 떠나지들 마십시오. 여러분의 영혼을 구원하기 위하여 무엇을 하면 좋은지 알려드리겠습니다”하고 그들을 진정시키며 말하였다.

성인은 이때부터 세계 모든 사람의 구원을 위해 제3회를 창립하려고 계획했다. 성인은 그 사람들을 깊이 위로하고 회개할 마음을 준비시켜 준 후에, 이곳을 떠나 간나리오와 베바뇨 중간 지점에 도착했다.

이와같이 변함없는 열정으로 여행을 계속하고 있는데, 어느날 성 프란치스코는 길가 몇그루의 나무 위에 무수히 많은 새들이 한 떼 앉아 있은 것을 보고 이상히 여겨 동료들에게 “여기서 잠간 기다려 주시오. 우리 형제들인 새들한테 가서 설교를 하고 오겠습니다” 하고 말한 다음 풀밭으로 들어가 땅에 앉아 있는 새들한데 설교를 시작했다. 그러자 금방 나무 위에 있던 새들도 성인 앞으로 날아와서는 설교를 들으며 꼼짝않고 모두 다 그대로 있었다.(그 새들은 나중에 성인이 강복해 줄 때까지도 떠나지 않았다)

얼마 후 맛세오 형제가 맛사의 야고보 형제에게 말한 것을 보면, 성 프란치스코가 새떼가 앉아 있는 가운데로 들어가서 성인의 수도복이 새들에게 스쳤는데도, 한 마리도 움직이는 일이 없었다는 것이다.

성 프란치스코의 설교 내용은 이러했다. “우리 형제인 여러분은 여러분의 창조주 하느님께로부터 모두들 끝없는 은혜를 입고 있으니, 언제나 어디서나 하느님을 찬미해야 합니다. 왜냐하면 그분이 여러분들에게 아무데나 마음대로 날아다닐 자유를 주셨고, 또 두 겹, 세 겹의 고운 옷을 입혀주셨기 때문입니다. 더군다나 그분은 여러분의 종족이 세상에서 몰살될까봐 노아의 방주 속에 여러분 선조들을 보호해 주셨고, 여러분이 공기로 된 생활 터전에 살도록 마련해 주셨습니다. 이밖에도 여러분은 씨뿌리거나 거두어들이지 않아도 하느님께서 먹여주시고 강과 샘물을 주어 마시게 하시며, 산과 골짜기는 피난처로 또 큰 나무는 보금자리를 치라고 거저 주십니다. 여러분은 바느질이나 길쌈을 할 줄 몰라도 하느님께서 친히 여러분과 어린것들에게 입을 옷을 주십니다. 이처럼 좋은 것을 많이 주시니 창조주께서는 여러분을 무척 사랑하시는 것입니다. 그러니 내 형제들이여! 배은망덕하는 죄에 떨어지지 말고 항상 하느님을 찬미하도록 힘쓰십시오.”

성 프란치스코가 이렇게 말하는 사이에, 새들은 모두 부리를 벌리고 목을 길게 빼고는 날개를 펴서 땅에까지 공손히 머리를 숙였다. 그리고는 몸짓과 노래로써 거룩한 사부님의 말씀이 참으로 새들에게 크나큰 기쁨을 일으켜 주었음을 나타내고자 하였다. 성인은 새들과 더불어 즐거워하고 기뻐했으며 이 새떼가 엄청나게 큰 무리였고, 또한 그것들이 아주 예쁘고 가지각색의 종류요, 얌전하고 친숙함에 경탄하여 새들과 어울려 창조주께 경건히 찬미드렸다.

마침내 설교가 끝났다. 성인이 십자성호를 긋고 날아갈 허락을 주자 아름다운 노래를 재잘거리며 줄지어 하늘로 높이높이 날라 올랐다. 새들은 성 프란치스코가 그은 십자가의 금을 따라 네 패로 나누어서 첫 패는 동쪽으로, 둘째 패는 서쪽으로, 셋째 패는 남쪽, 네째 패는 북쪽으로 제각기 형언할 수 없는 목소리로 지저귀면서 멀리 날아갔다.

이것은 그리스도 십자가의 기수인 성 프란치스코가 새들에게 설교한 후 십자가의 표를 그었고 이 표에 따라 사방으로 새들이 갈라져 나아간 것처럼, 그리스도의 십자가로 된 설교 역시 성 프란치스코가 형제들을 통해서 또다시 세상 곳곳마다 널리 전해질 것을 뜻하는 것으로 보였다.

사실 이 형제들은 새들과 마찬가지로 이 세상에서 제 것이라곤 아무것도 없이 오직 하느님의 섭리 하나에 자신들의 생애를 맡기고 살아갔다.

주: 우리는 이 에피소드가 언제 있었는지 알 수 없다. 아마도 1212-1214년 사이인 듯하다. 이 이야기의 가장 중요한 부분은 성인이 새들에게 설교한 일일 것이다. 화가 죠토는 이 불멸의 에피소드를 그의 화폭에다 담았다. 성 프란치스코는 역시 제3회(재속회)를 창립할 생각을 가졌지만 1221년 후에야 세우게 되었다고 한다.

16. How God Revealed to St. Clare and Brother Silvester That St. Francis Should Go and Preach


The humble servant of Christ, St. Francis, at the beginning of his conversion, when he had already gathered many companions and received them in the Order, was placed in a great agony of doubt as to what he should do: whether to give himself only to continual prayer or to preach sometimes. He wanted very much to know which of theses would please Our Lord Jesus Christ most. And as the holy humility that was in him did not allow him to trust in himself or in his own prayers, he humbly turned to others in order to know God’s will in this matter.

So he called Brother Masseo and said to him: “Dear Brother, go to Sister Clare and tell her on my behalf to pray devoutly to God, with one of her purer and more spiritual companions, that He may deign to show me what is best: either that I preach sometimes or that I devote myself only to prayer. And then go also the Brother Silvester, who is staying on Mount Subasio, and tell him the same thing.”

This was that Lord Silvester who had seen a cross of gold issuing from the mouth of St. Francis which extended in length to Heaven and in width to the ends of the world. And this Brother Silvester was so devout and holy that God immediately granted or revealed to him whatever he asked in prayer. The Holy Spirit had made him remarkably deserving of divine communications, and he conversed with God many times.

And therefore St. Francis was very devoted to him and had great faith in him. This holy Brother Silvester often stayed alone n the above-mentioned Place.

Brother Masseo went, and as St. Francis had ordered him, gave the message first to St. Clare and then to Brother Silvester. When the latter received it, he immediately set himself to praying. And while praying he quickly had God’s answer. And he went out at once to Brother Masseo and said: “The Lord says you are to tell Brother Francis this: that God has not called him to this state only his own account, but that he may reap a harvest of souls and that many may be saved through him.”

After this Brother Masseo went back to St. Clare to know what she had received from God. And she answered that both she and her companion had had the very same answer from God as Brother Silvester.

Brother Masseo therefore returned to St. Francis. And the Saint received him with great charity: he washed his feet and prepared a meal for him. And after he had eaten, St. Francis called Brother Masseo, and baring his head and crossing his arms, St. Francis asked him: “What does my Lord Jesus Christ order me to do?”

Brother Masseo replied that Christ had answered both Brother Silvester and Sister Clare and her companion and revealed that “He wants you to go about the world preaching, because God did not call you for yourself alone but also for the salvation of others.”

And then the hand of the Lord came over St. Francis. As soon as he heard this answer and thereby knew the will of Christ, he got to his feet, all aflame with divine power, and said to Brother Masseo with great fervor: “So let’s go-in the name of the Lord!”

And he took as companions Brother Masseo and Brother Angelo, holy men. And he set out like a bolt of lightning in his spiritual ardor, not paying any attention to the road or path.

They arrived at a village called Cannara. And St. Francis began to preach, first ordering the swallows who were twittering to keep quiet until he had finished preaching. And the swallows obeyed him. He preached there so fervently that all the men and women of that village, as a result of his sermon and of the miracle of the swallows, in their great devotion wanted to follow him and abandon the village. But St. Francis did not let them, saying to them: “Don’t be in a hurry and don’t leave, for I will arrange what you should do for the salvation of your souls.” And from that time he planned to organize the Third Order of the Continent for the salvation of all people everywhere.

And leaving them much consoled and disposed to do penance, he left there and came between Cannara and Bevagna. And while going with the same fervor through that district with his companions, he looked up and saw near the road some trees on which there as such a countless throng of different birds as had never been seen before in that area. And also a very great crowd of birds was in a field near those trees. While he gazed and marveled at the multitude of birds, the Spirit of God came over him and he said to his companions: “Wait for me here on the road. I am going to preach to our sisters, the birds.”

And he went into the field toward the birds that were on the ground. And as son as he began to preach, all the birds that were on the trees came down toward him. And all of them stayed motionless with the others in the field, even though he went among them, touching many of them with his habit. But not a single one of them made the slightest move, and later they did not leave until he had given them his blessing, as Brother James of Massa, a holy man, said, said, and he had all the above facts from Brother Masseo, who was one of those who were the companions of the holy Father at that time.

The substance of St. Francis’ sermon to those birds was this: “My little bird sisters, you owe much to God your Creator, and you must always and everywhere praise Him, because He has given you freedom to fly anywhere-also He has given you a double and triple covering, and your colorful and pretty clothing, and your food is ready without your working for it, and your singing that was taught to you by the blessing of God-and because He preserved your species in Noah’s ark so that your race should not disappear from the earth. And you are also indebted to Him for the realm of the air which He assigned to you. Moreover, you neither sow nor reap, yet God nourishes you, and He gives you the rivers and springs to drink from. He gives you high mountains and hills, rocks and crags as refuges, and lofty trees in which to make your nests. And although you do not know how to spin or sew, God gives you and your little ones the clothing which you need. So the Creator loves you very much, since He gives you so many good things. Therefore, my little bird sisters, be careful not to be ungrateful, but strive always to praise God.”

Now at these words of St. Francis, all those birds began to open their beaks, stretch out their necks, spread their wings, and reverently bow their heads to the ground, showing by their movements and their songs that the words which St. Francis was saying gave them great pleasure. And when St. Francis noticed this, he likewise rejoiced greatly in spirit with them, and he marveled at such a great throng of birds and at their very beautiful variety and also at their attention and familiarity and affection. And therefore he devoutly praised the wonderful Creator in them and gently urged them to praise the Creator.

Finally, when he had finished preaching to them and urging them to praise God, St. Francis made the Sign of the Cross over all those birds and gave them permission to leave. Then all the birds rose up into the air simultaneously, and in the air they sang a wonderful song. And when they had finished singing, according to the form of the Cross which St. Francis had made over them, they separated in an orderly way and formed four groups. And each group rose high into the air and flew off in a different direction: one toward the east, another toward the west, the third toward the south, and the fourth toward the north. And each group sang marvelously as it flew away.

Thereby they signified that, just as St. Francis-who was to bear the marks of Christ’s Cross-had preached to them and made the Sign of the Cross over them, so they had separated in the form of a cross and had flown away, singing, toward the four quarters of the world, thus suggesting that the preaching of the Cross of Christ, which had been renewed by St. Francis, as to be carried throughout the world by him and by his friars. Who, like birds, possess nothing of their own in this world and commit themselves entirely to the Providence of God.

And so they were called eagles by Christ when He said, “Wherever the body shall be, there the eagles will gather.” For the saints who place their hope in the Lord will take on wings like eagles and will fly up to the Lord and will not die for all eternity.
