제23장 성 프란치스코가 한 형제를 죄와 마귀의 지배에서 구해준 일

어떤 날 천사의 성 마리아 수도원에서 성 프란치스코가 기도하고 있을 때, 하느님의 계시로 그 수도원 전부가 큰 군대와 같은 마귀때에 포위되어 있음을 보았다. 그러나 그중 어느 한 놈도 수도원 안을 뚫고 들어올 수는 없었다. 수도원 형제들이 매우 거룩하여서 마귀들은 자기들이 들어갈 만한 형제는 하나도 찾아내지 못했기 때문이다.

그러나 어느날 마귀들이 끈질기게 기회를 노리고 있는 중에, 형제 하나가 다른 형제에게 마침 분노를 품고 마음속으로 어떻게 하면 그를 고소하고 복수할까 궁리하고 있었다. 이 나쁜 생각 속에 마귀는 문이 열리는 것을 보았으므로 수도원으로 뜷고 들어가 그 형제의 목덜미에 웅크리고 앉았다. 항상 깨어 자기 양떼를 보살피고 있는 인자스러운 목자는 늑대가 들어와 자기 어린양을 잡아먹으려 하는 것을 눈치채고, 그 형제를 불러서 그를 마귀 손에 넘어가게 하는, 마음속에 품고 있는 증오의 독을 즉시 참회하도록 명했다. 그 형제는 사부님께서 모든 것을 다 알고 있는 것을 보고 그만 공포에 사로잡혀 모든 악한 생각과 증오를 털어놓으며, 자기 죄를 고백하고 겸손되이 보속과 자비를 청했다. 그는 죄 사함과 보속을 받자, 마귀는 성 프란치스코 앞에서 즉시 도망쳤다.

착한 목자의 공로로 잔인한 야수의 손아귀를 벗어난 그 형제는 하느님께 감사하고, 받은 훈계로 자신의 잘못을 고치고 거룩한 목자의 양떼에 돌아와 큰 성덕 속에 살았다.

23. How St. Francis Saw the Place of the Portiuncula Besieged by Devils


Once at the place of the Portiuncula, when St. Francis was praying devoutly, as was his custom, by divine revelation he saw the whole Place surrounded and besieged by devils, as by a great army. But not one of them was able to enter into the Place because the friars were so holy that the devils could find no one to whom they could gain admittance.

However, while they were thus persevering, one of the friars was stirred to anger and impatience against one of his companions, and he thought how he could accuse him and take revenge on him. As a result, the gate of virtue being abandoned and the door of wickedness being open, he gave the devil a way to come in. And immediately, while St. Francis was watching, one of those devils entered into the Place and attacked that brother as a winner attacks a loser, and he crouched on the friar’s neck.

When the compassionate Father and shepherd, who always watched over his flock very faithfully, saw that a wolf had entered to devour one of his little lambs, and knew that his sheep were in great danger, he had that friar called to him.
And when the friar obediently came running to his anxious shepherd, St. Francis ordered him to reveal at once the poison of hatred against his neighbor that he had conceived and kept in his heart, as a result of which he had given himself over to the enemy.

And he, seeing that the holy Father had read his thoughts, was afraid and revealed his wound-all his poison and rancor-and acknowledged his fault and humbly asked for forgiveness and a penance. And when he had done that, he was absolved from his sin and received the penance, and all of the sudden St. Francis saw the devil fly away.

And the friar, having thus been freed from the hands of the cruel beast, gave thanks to God and to St. Francis, and he persevered to the end in great holiness of life, through the merits of his shepherd.
