25장

성 프란치스코가 나병환자의 육신과 영혼을 고치신 기적과 그 사람이 천국에 들어가면서 성인께 어떤 것을 말해준 이야기

 

 

그리스도의 진정한 제자인 성 프란치스코는, 이 비참한 세상에 사는 동안, 온갖 힘을 다하여 완전하신 스승 그리스도를 따르려고 애썼다.

 

그리스도께서 복음서에서 하신 것처럼 성인은 어떤 사람의 육신의 병을 고쳐줄 때, 바로 그 시각에 하느님이 그 사람의 영혼도 고쳐주신 일이 자주 있었던 것을 계시로써 알게 되었다.

 

성 프란치스코는 자기자신이 나병환자들에게 즐겨 봉사하였을뿐만 아니라, 우리를 위하여 구약성경에서 나병환자라고(이사야 53: 4) 기꺼이 불리었던 그 그리스도께 대한 사랑때문에, 형제들에게도 세상에 돌아다닐 때 만나는 나병환자들을 돌보라고 명했다.

 

한번은 성 프란치스코가 살고 있던 근처의 한 수도원 형제들이 병원에 가서 나병환자와 다른 환자들을 간호하고 있었다. 그중 한 나병환자는 참을성이 없고 신경질적이고 오만불손하여, 모두들 그가 마귀들렸다고 생각했는데, 그것은 사실이었다. 그는 자기를 간호해 주는 사람들에게 악담을 퍼부우며 구타했고, 더욱 못된 것은 복되신 그리스도와 그분의 모친이신 마리아를 모독하였다. 그리므로 그를 돌볼 만한 이는 물론 그런 마음을 먹는 사람까지도 찾아볼 수 없었다. 형제들은 인내의 덕을 기르려고 자기들에 대한 악담과 모욕은 견디어낼 수 있었으나, 그리스도와 그분의 모친을 모욕하는 말에는 양심상 도저히 참아내지를 못했다. 그래서 환자를 완전히 포기하기로 마음먹었지만, 근처에 계신 성 프란치스코께 모든 이야기를 다 말씀드릴 때까지 기다리기로 했다.

 

그 이야기를 들은 후 성 프란치스코는 그 괴팍한 환자한테 갔다. 병실에 들어서자 "친애하는 나의 형제여, 하느님께서 평화를 주십니다"하고 인사했다. 그 나환자는 툭 쏘아붙이며 "하느님이 무슨 평화를 준단 말이야? 그는 내게서 모든 행복과 평화를 빼앗아 가고, 나를 이렇게 썩고 냄새나게 하지 않았소?' 하며 대들었다.

 

성 프란치스코는 "형제여, 좀 참으시오. 육신의 병이라는 것은 이 세상에 있는 동안 하느님께서 우리 영혼을 구원하시려고 내려 주시는 것이니 착히 참아 받으면 큰 공로가 되는 것입니다"라고 위로하니, 환자는 입을 삐쭉거리며 투덜댔다. "흥! 낮이나 밤이나 나를 괴롭히는 것 병뿐이 아니라구. 당신이 나를 간호하라고 보낸 수사들이 더 큰 두통거리야. 그들은 손톱만치도 만족하게 돌봐주지를 않어."

 

성인은 계시로써 이 나병환자가 악령에 들려 있음을 알고는 그 앞을 떠나 기도에 잠겨 불쌍한 그를 위해 하느님께 경건하게 간청했다.

 

기도를 마치고 다시 그 병자에게 가서 "형제는 다른 사람들의 간호에는 불만인 것 같으니 내가 직접 시중을 들겠고"라고 말하자마자 "그거 참 좋소. 그러나 당신은 다른이들보다 나한테 얼마나 더 잘 해줄 수 있겠소?" 하고 환자는 비양거렸다.

 

성 프란치스코는 "원하는 대로 해주겠소"하니, 병자는 대뜸 "그럼 내 몸을 전부 씻어주시오. 너무나 지독하게 냄새가 나서 견딜 수가 없으니"라고 무뚝뚝하게 말을 던졌다.

 

성 프란치스코는 곧 물을 끓이고 좋은 향내 나는 풀을 그 물에 많이 넣었다. 그리고 나서 환자의 옷을 벗긴 다음, 다른 형제 하나가 물을 붓고 있는 동안에 두 손으로 그 몸을 깨끗이 씻어주기 시작했다.

 

그러자 하느님의 기적으로 성인이 거룩한 손이 닿는 곳에는 상처가 깨끗이 사라지고, 그 피부는 완전히 나았다. 외적으로 물로 몸을 씻을 때 육신의 상처가 완전히 치료되고 깨끗해진 것 같이, 내적으로도 그의 영혼은 치료되고 깨끗해졌다. 그 나병환자는 자신이 외적으로 완전히 치료되었음을 보고는 즉시 양심의 가책을 느끼고 뉘우치며 슬프게 울었다. 그의 육신이 물로 씻겨져 나병에게 깨끗해진 것처럼, 그의 영혼은 눈물로 씻겨져 온갖 죄악에서 깨끗해진 것이다. 몸도 영혼도 완전히 치료되니, 그는 겸손히 죄과를 고백하고 울면서 소리높여 말했다. "아, 슬프구나! 형제들께 못된 짓을 하고 욕설을 퍼붓고, 또 하느님마저 거슬러 모독했으니 지옥에 떨어져 마땅하다." 이같이 그는 보름 동안 비통히 자기 죄에 대해 줄곧 울고 불쌍히 여겨주심을 끈기있게 하느님께 애원하면서, 사제에게 가 고해성사를 봤다. 이에 성 프란치스코는 자기 손을 통하여 하느님께서 행하신 기적을 분명히 보고, 하느님께 감사드리며 그곳을 떠나 아주 먼 지방으로 갔다. 성인은 겸손했으므로 세상의 어떤 영광도 다 피하고자 했고, 성인은 겸손했으므로 세상의 어떤 영광도 다 피하고자 했고, 성인이 행하신 모든 것에서는 오직 하느님의 영예와 영광만을 얻으려 했으며 자신의 영광는 추호도 구하지 않았다.

 

영혼과 육신이 치료된 이 나병환자는 15일간 보속을 한 후 하느님의 뜻으로 다른 병에 걸려, 교회 성사의 위안을 받고 거룩하게 임종했다

 

그 영혼은 천국으로 올라갈 때 숲속에서 기도를 드리고 있는 성 프란치스코에게 공중에서 나타나 '나를 아십니까?" 하고 물었다. "당신이 누구십니까?"하고 성 프란치스코가 말하며 놀라자. 그는 다음과 같이 대답했다. "나는 지극히 복되신 그리스도께서 당신의 공로를 통해 고쳐주신 나병환자인데, 오늘 영원한 생명으로 들어갑니다. 내가 이렇게 된 것을 하느님과 당신께 감사드립니다. 당신은 영혼과 육신이 복되시며, 당신의 말씀과 선행도 복되십니다. 많은 영혼이 당신 때문에 이 세상에서 구원 될 것입니다. 또한 당신과 당신이 세우신 형제회가 세계 각처에서 거두는 거룩한 열매에 대하여 하루도 빠짐없이 천사들과 성인들이 하느님께 감사드린다는 것을 알아두십시오. 그러니 용기를 가지시고 하느님께 감사하십시오. 하느님의 축복이 함께 하시기를! 말을 마친 그는 천국으로 떠나갔다.

25 How St. Francis Miraculously Healed a Man with Leprosy in Soul and Body.

 

That true disciple of Christ, St. Francis, while he was still living in this miserable and pitiable world, being enlightened by the Holy Spirit, always strove with all his strength to follow in the footsteps of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the perfect Master.

 

Thus as Christ Himself condescended to become a pilgrim, so St. Francis showed himself and his friars as true pilgrims, and he also had it written in the Rule that all his friars should serve the Lord in this world as pilgrims and strangers.

 

Moreover, as Christ came not only to serve people with leprosy, healing and cleansing them in body, but He also wished to die for them, sanctifying and cleansing them in their soul, so St. Francis, longing to be entirely conformed to Christ, used them food, washing their sore limbs, cleaning and washing their clothes, and, moreover, frequently and fervently giving them kisses. And so it happened many times that God by Hid power simultaneously healed the soul of one whose body the Saint healed, as we read of Christ.

 

And therefore St. Francis not only served victims of leprosy willingly, but, in addition, he ordered that friars of his Order should serve them with care wherever they might be going or staying in the world, for the love of Christ who for our sake wished to be considered like a man with leprosy. And the friars used to do this in many places very gladly, as truly obedient sons.

 

Now it happened once, in a Place near the one where St. Francis was then living, that the friars were taking care of leprosy patients and sick people in a hospital. And a certain man was there who was so seriously ill with leprosy and so impatient and irritable that everyone was sure he was possessed by an evil spirit-and such was the case. For he not only attacked any of the friars who nursed him with horribly foul language and shot insults at them like arrows, but what was worse, he would also whip and wound them in various ways. Yet the most fearful and worst of all was that he would curse and blaspheme the Blessed Christ and His most holy Mother and the other Saints, so that no one could be found who could or would take care of him.

 

And although the friars tried to endure the insults and injuries meekly in order to increase the merit of their patience, their consciences could not tolerate his blasphemous insults to Christ and His holy Mother, lest they should seem to be participating in such a great sin. Therefore they decided to abandon that man completely in order not to become blasphemers of God and supporters of an instrument of the devil.

 

But they did not want to do this until they had duly told the whole story to St. Francis, who was then living in another Place nearby.

 

After fearing them, St. Francis went to that perverse man with leprosy, and entering, he greeted him: “God give you peace, my dear brother.”

The man answered reproachfully: “What peace can I have from God, who has taken from me all peace and everything that is good, and has made me all rotten and stinking?”

 

And St. Francis said: “My dear son, be patient, because the weaknesses of the body are given to us in this world by God for the salvation of soul. So they are of great merit when they are borne patiently.”

 

And the sick man replied: “How can I bear patiently this constant pain that is afflicting me day and night? For not only am I burned and crucified by my sickness, but I am sorely wronged by the friars whom you gave me to take care of me, because there is not one who serves me the way he should.”

 

Then St. Francis, knowing by the Holy Ghost that he was troubled by an evil spirit, went and began to pray devoutly to God for him.

 

And having prayed, St. Francis came back to him and said: “Dear son, I want to take care of you, since you are not satisfied with the others.”

 

And the sick man replied: “All right. But what more can you do for me than the others?”

 

And St. Francis said: “I will do whatever you want.”

 

And the leprosy patient said: “I want you to wash me all over, because I smell so bad that I cannot stand it myself.”

 

Then St. Francis immediately had water boiled with many sweet-scented herbs. Next, he undressed the man with leprosy and began to wash him with his holy hands, while another friar poured the water over him.

 

And by a divine miracle, wherever St. Francis touched him with his holy hands, the leprosy disappeared, and the flesh began to heal and be wholly cleansed from leprosy, so too interiorly his soul began to be healed and cleansed. And when the man with leprosy saw himself being healed externally, he immediately began to have great compunction and remorse for his sins. And he began to cry very bitterly. Just as his body was washed with water and cleansed from leprosy, so his conscience was baptized by tears and contrition and cleansed from all evil and sin.

 

When he was completely washed and healed physically, he was perfectly anointed and healed spiritually. And he was overcome with such compunction and weeping that he humbly accused himself and cried out in a loud voice: “Woe to me, for I deserve hell for the insults and injuries I have given to the friars and for my impatience and blasphemies against God!

 

So for a good fifteen days he kept bitterly lamenting his sins with a remarkable wailing that burst from the inner depths of his soul. And he constantly sought nothing but the mercy of God. And with that compunction and weeping he confessed all his sins to a priest.

 

St. Francis, seeing such a clear miracle which God had performed through his hands, gave thanks to God and left there for a distant region, so that when that miracle became known to the people they should not all run to him, because through humility he wanted to flee any worldly glory, and in all that he did, as a faithful and prudent servant, he sought to procure the honor and glory of God and not his own, and to receive humiliation and disgrace among men for himself.

Later, as t pleased God, the man who had had leprosy and whose body and soul had been healed, soon after the fifteen days of his marvelous penance, fell sick with another illness. And well armed with the Sacraments of the Church, he died a holy death.

While St. Francis was praying in a certain remote Place in a forest, the dead man’s soul, brighter than the sun, appeared to him in the air going to Paradise, and said to him: “Do you recognize me?”

 

St. Francis said to him; “Who are you?”

 

And he answered: “I am the man with leprosy whom the Blessed Christ healed through you merits. And today I am going to Paradis and to eternal life-for which I give thanks to God and to you. Blessed be your soul and your body, and blessed be your words and your deeds, because many souls are being saved and will be saved by your in the world. And know that there is not one day when the holy angels and all the other saints do not give fervent thanks to God for the holy fruits which are produced through you and your Order in different parts of the world. Therefore be comforted, and give thanks to God. And abide with the blessing of God!”

 

And having said those words, he disappeared on his way to Heaven.

 

And St. Francis remained much consoled.
