The Porto metro has a station at the airport with trains into the city every 30 minutes every day. This is by far the cheapest and quikest way to get to the city.

Porto Airport, what a simple quick and easy Metro system. After exiting customs, directly opposite you on the otherside of the arrivals hall is a bank of three lifts, go down 1 level, shown as -1, turn either left or right go past the car park pay stations and after approx 100 yards you enter the Metro hall. The first escalator on the left takes you up to the train. First buy your Andante ticket from one of the 4 ticket machines (all have English instruction), cost of a single journey is €2.30 and that includes the .50 cent Andante card. The machines take both coins and notes and gives change. Most machines also take credit and debit cards for larger amounts eg monthly passes.

Apart from the machines, you can also buy tickets in the Metro Counter inside of the Tourist Office, right in the arrivals hall. There you can also buy the Andante Tour for 24 or 72 hours straight, with unlimited trips, valid for all the transport network: Metro, bus, funicular and some trains around Porto (this tickets is not available in the ticket machines). The Metro Counter is open every day from 9:00am to 8:30pm.

The Andante tickets are rechargeable (except Andante Tour), so don't throw them away. You will save 50 cents on any subsequent journey by metro, train, bus or tram. The journey into the city centre takes about 30 minutes. Trains from the airport run at these times, seven days a week.

Unfortunately, Metro train service has fallen victim to the country's economic woes! Trains now run only every 30 minutes on the airport line, starting at around 06.00 and with a last train from the airport at 00.36 every day.

The official website www.metrodoporto.pt has maps of the network etc.

One final advice - do not forget to validate your ticket before starting your journey (yellow machines at the base of the escalators + others on the platform). There is a 95 Euro fine if you do not have a valid ticket..

There are several bus routes also serving the airport, mainly to suburbs not reached by metro. For all details visit www.stcp.pt

NOTE - During the night hours when the metro is closed there is a bus line (3M) linking the aiport and the city centre. Check the schedules here.

Returning to the airport by Metro

Trains run every 30 minutes, seven days a week. Journey time from Estadio do Dragão to Airport is 40 minutes. Allow another 5 minutes walk to reach the departures area.

First trains leave from Estadio do Dragão every day at 0610, thus running through the city centre between 0615 and 0620

Last trains leave the Estadio do Dragão for the airport at 0049 every day.
