제30장 성 프란치스코와 루피노 형제가 벌거벗은채 아씨시에서 설교한 이야기

저 루피노 형제는 계속되는 묵상으로 하느님께 너무나도 몰두하여 무감각한 벙어리처럼 되었다. 그는 좀처럼 입을 열지 않았고 설교의 담력도 이야기하는 재능도 없었다.

그럼에도 불구하고 성 프란치스코는 어떤 날 루피노 형제에게 아씨시로 가서 하느님께서 영감을 주시는 대로 사람들에게 설교하라고 명령하였다.

루피노 형제는 ‘존경하는 사부님! 제발 저를 보내지 말아주십시오. 저는 아시다시피 설교의 은총도 없고 우둔하고 무식한 사람입니다“라고 간청하였다.

성 프란치스코는 “형제는 내 말을 꼭 듣지 않으므로 나는 거룩한 순종의 이름으로 명합니다. 팬티 하나만 입고 아씨시로 가서 성당 안에 들어가 벌거벗은 채로 설교하십시오!”하고 말했다.

이 명령을 따라 루피노 형제는 옷을 벗고 아씨시로 가서 어떤 성당에 들어갔다. 제대 앞에 인사를 드리고 설교대로 올라가 강론하기 시작했다. 그것을 보고 어른 아이 할것없이 킬킬 웃으며 말하기를 “저것 좀 봐! 저 사람들은 너무 고행을 했기 때문에 머리가 돌았어”하고 소란스럽게 웃고 떠들어댔다.

한편 성 프란치스코는 아씨시에서 가장 유명한 귀족 중의 하나인 루피노 형제가 즉시 복종한 것과 그에게 자기가 너무 가혹한 명령을 내렸다고 생각하고 스스로 꾸짖어 말하기를 “너는 어디서 그런 교만이 나왔느냐? 베드로 베르나르도의 아들, 이  악한 놈아! 아씨시에서 가장 유명한 귀족 중의 하나인 루피노 형제더러 미친 사람처럼 벌거벗고 설교하라고 명령하다니! 하느님의 이름으로 남에게 명령한 것을 너도 실행하라”하고 단호히 명령을 내린 다음 곧 성령에서 우러나오는 열정으로 성인 자신도 옷을 벗은 채 레오에게 자기 옷과 루피노의 옷을 들리고는 벌거숭이로 아씨시에 들어갔다. 아씨시의 사람들은 그 모양을 보자 성 프란치스코도 루피노 형제와 마찬가지로 고행이 지나쳐서 미친 줄 알고 놀려댔다.

성 프란치스코가 성당에 들어가니 루피노 형제는 다음과 같은 설교를 하고 있었다. “친애하는 여러분, 세속을 떠나시고 죄를 끓으십시오. 만일 지옥에 가고 싶지 않다면 남의 물건을 돌려주십시오. 천국에 들어가기를 원하면 하느님과 이웃사람을 사랑하며 하느님의 계명을 잘 지키십시오. 하늘나라가 가까이 왔으니 통회하십시오.”

루피노의 설교가 끝나자 성 프란치스코는 알몸둥이로 설교대에 올라가서 세상을 가벼이 여길 것과 거룩한 고신 극기와 자발적인 가난, 그리고 천국을 열망함과 우리 주 예수 그리스도께서 수난당하시고 악마에게 포악하게 옷을 벗기우신 일과 같은 능욕으로 매질 당하신 일을 훌륭하게 설교하였더니 거기 모인 수많은 사람들은 남녀 할것없이 큰 열심과 통회의 정이 치밀어 올라 소리내어 엉엉 우는 것이었다. 그뿐 아니라 그날 아씨시의 온 거리는 그리스도의 수난을 슬퍼하는 소리로 덮였는데 이렇게 슬피 운 일은 과거에 한번도 없었다.

사람들은 성 프란치스코와 루피노 형제의 행동에 큰 감화와 위안을 받았다.

성인은 루피노 형제에게 옷을 입게 하고는 자기도 옷을 입고 함께 천사의 성 마리아 수도원으로 돌아왔다. 하느님께서 그들에게 은총을 주시어 자기자신을 멸시함으로써 자기를 이기고 좋은 표양으로 그리스도의 어린양들을 감화시켜 어떻게 세속을 업신여길 것인지를 보여준 데 대하여 하느님께 다같이 감사드렸다. 또한 그날부터 사람들의 존경심은 더욱 두터워져 그들의 옷자락을 만지기만 하여도 자기들은 축복받은 자라고 생각하게 되었다.

그리스도께 찬미. 아멘.

주: 이 이야기는 아직 형제들의 수효가 매우 적었던 형제회의 초기-아마도 1211년에 있었던 일인 것 같다. 라틴어 원본에는 수도복을 벗는 것이 성 프란치스코의 생각이 아니라 루피노의 생각이었다고 되어 있다.

30. How St. francis Sent Brother Rufino to Preach in Assisi without His Habit

Brother Rufino was so absorbed in God as a result of continual contemplation that he became almost mute and insensible to external things. He used to speak very rarely, and, besides, he had neither the gift nor courage nor ability to preach the word of God.

Nevertheless, one day St. Francis told Brother Rufino to go to Assisi and preach to the people whatever God would inspire him to say.

But Brother Rufino answered: "Reverend Father, please excuse me and don't send me on that assignment because, as you well know, I do not have the grace of preaching, and also I am just a simple ignorant fellow."

Then St. Francis said: 'Because you did not obey me at once, I also command you under holy obedience to go to Assisi naked-wearing only your breeches-and to go into some church and preach to the people naked like that!"

At this command Brother Rufino Obediently undressed and went to Assisi naked and entered into a church. And after he had knelt in reverence before the altar, he went up into the pulpit and began to preach.

At this, the children and men began to laugh and to say: "Look-they are doing so much penance they have gone crazy!"

Meanwhile, St. Francis, thinking over the prompt obedience of Brother Rufino, who was one of the foremost gentlemen of Assisi, and the very difficult command he had given him, began to reproach himself very severely, saying: "How can you, the son of Peter Bernardone-you vile little wretch-order Brother Rufino, who is one of the noblest citizens of Assisi, to go naked and preach to the people like a madman. By God, I am going to see to it that you yourself experience what you order others to do!"

And having said that, in the fervor of the Holy Spirit he too immediately took off his habit and went to Assisi naked, accompanied by Brother Leo, who very discreetly carried along the Saint's habit and Brother Rufino's.

And when the people of Assisi saw him naked too, they laughed at him as at a lunatic, thinking that both he and Brother Rufino had gone mad from doing too much penance.

But St. Francis found and entered the church where Brother Rufino had already begun to preach. And he was saying these words devoutly and severly: "Oh, dear people, flee the world. Give up sin. Restore to others what belongs to them if you want to escape hell. But keep God's commandments and love God and your neighbor if you want to go to Heaven, And do penance, because the Kingdom of Heaven is drawing near!"

Then St. Francis went up naked into the pulpit, and he began to preach so marvelously about contempt for the world, holy penance, holy voluntary poverty, the desire for the Kingdom of Heaven, and about the nakedness and humiliations and most holy passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ Crucified that the whole crowd of men and women who had gathered there for the sermon in great numbers began to weep very bitterly. And with unbelievable devotion and compunction of heart they cried out aloud to God for mercy so that nearly all of them were converted to a new state of mind.

And not only there, but throughout all Assis on that day there was such mourning among the people over the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ that so much weeping had never been heard in that town.

And after the people had thus been edified and Christ's sheep had been consoled by the deed of St. Francis and Brother Rufino, and after  they had received a blessing in the name of Our Lord Jesus Christ, St. Francis put Brother Rufino's habit on him again, and he himself got dressed with him.

And so wearing their habits once more, they went back to the Place of the Portiuncula, glorifying and praising the Lord for having given them the grace to overcome themselves by self-contempt and for having edified the little sheep of Christ by their good example and for having shown how the world is to be despised.

And on that day the devotion of the people toward them increased so much that those who could touch the hem of their clothes considered themselves blessed.

To the glory of Our Lord Jesus Christ, who is blessed! Amen.
