제 29장 성 프란치스코가 루피노 형제를 유혹에서 구해준 일

아씨시의 명문 귀족이었으며 성 프란치스코의 동료로서 뛰어난 성덕을 지녔던 루피노 형제는 어느날 운명 예정의 문제에 대하여 격렬한 공격과 유혹을 받아 매우 우울한 기분과 슬픔에 사로잡혔다. 그 까닭은 악마가 그의 마음속에, 자기는 단죄받아 영원한 생명에 들어갈 수 없으며, 형제회에서 지금까지 한 모든 수고도 헛된 일이라고 암시해 주었기 때문이다. 이 시련은 여러날 계속되었으나 그는 부끄러워 성 프란치스코에게 말하지 못했다. 그렇다고 매일 해오던 기도와 고행을 중지하지는 않았다. 악마 역시 설상가상으로 내부의 싸움에 외부의 싸움을 가하여 거짓으로 발현함으로써 그를 유혹하였다

하루는 악마가 그리스도의 모습을 하고 나타나 “루피노 형제야” 영원한 생명에 들어갈 운명을 가진 사람들 중에 네가 들어 있지 않는데 무엇 때문에 고행과 기도로 네 몸을 괴롭히느냐? 나는 이미 선택하여 운명을 결정지은 사람들을 알고 있기 때문에 나를 꼭 믿어야 한다. 만일 베드로 베르나르도의 아들이 이와 반대로 말해도 믿지 말아라. 이 문제에 대하여 그에게 묻지도 말아라. 하느님의 아들인 나 이외에는 프란치스코도 아무도 그 운명을 모른다. 그러니 나를 믿어라. 너는 확실히 영원한 벌을 받을 사람들 중에 들어 있다. 베드로 베르나르도의 아들, 너의 사부도, 또 그의 아버지도 모두 지옥에 떨어진다. 프란치스코를 따르는 사람은 누구나 다 속아 넘어가게 된다“하고 그럴듯하게 말하였다.

루피노 형제는 이 말을 듣고 암흑왕의 힘에 눌려 마음이 너무나 어두워져서 성 프란치스코에 대하여 이전에 품고 있던 신뢰와 사랑을 다 잃어버렸고, 또 이 고민을 성인에게 알리고 싶지도 않았다.

그러나 성령께서는 루피노 형제가 말하지 않는 것을 사부님에게 직접 계시해 주었다. 성 프란치스코도 이 형제가 큰 위험 가운데 있는 것을 깨닫고 맛세오 형제를 시켜 루피노 형제를 불렀다. 그러나 루피노 형제는 화를 버럭 내면서, “도대체 내가 프란치스코 형제와 무슨 관계가 있단 말이오?”하고 딱 잘라 거절했다.

맛세오 형제는 천상적 지혜가 충만하였으므로 악마의 농간인 줄을 알아차렸다. “루피노 형제여, 프란치스코 형제가 하느님의 천사 같은 분이며 이제까지 세상의 많은 영혼을 비춰왔고, 우리도 그분을 통하여 하느님의 은총을 받았다는 것을 모릅니까? 나는 굳이 형제를 그분 앞에 모시고 가고 싶습니다. 형제가 악마에게 속고 있는 것을 나는 분명히 알고 있기 때문입니다.”

이 말에 루피노 형제는 일어나 성 프란치스코 곁으로 갔다. 성인은 멀리서 그 형제가 오는 것을 보자 큰소리로, “루피노 형제, 형제는 누구를 믿었습니까?”하고 가볍게 꾸짓었다.

루피노 형제가 곁에 오자 성인은 이 형제가 안팎으로 악마의 시련을 받아야 했던 일을 자세히 이야기해 주고, 그에게 발현한 것은 악마였지 그리스도가 아니었다는 것과, 어떠한 일이 있더라도 그 유혹의 속삭임에 넘어가면 안된다는 것을 분명히 알려주었다.

“만약 마귀가 형제에게 ‘너는 저주받을 것이다’고 말하거든 ‘네 아가리를 벌려라, 그 안에 변을 보겠다’고 대답하시오, 형제가 이 말을 하여 그가 즉시 도망가면 그것이 마귀인 증거로 아십시오. 선한 일에 대해 형제의 마음을 무뎌지게 했기 때문에 그가 악마인 줄을 형제는 잘 알았어야 했습니다. 바로 그것이 악마가 하는 일입니다. 그와는 반대로 복되신 그리스도는 결코 성실한 신자의 마음을 무디게 하시는 일이 없고, 오히려 마음을 부드럽게 하시고 민감하게 하십니다. 예언자의 입을 통하여 ‘나 너희에게로부터 굳은 마음을 제하고 부드러운 마음을 주리라’(에제 11:19)고 말씀하신 바와 같습니다.”

루피노 형제는 성 프란치스코가 자기가 겪은 시련을 샅샅이 다 말해주는 것을 보고 마음속으로 악마의 말을 들은 것을 후회하고 흐느껴 울었다. 그리고는 성 프란치스코 앞에 엎디어 이 시련을 숨기고 있었던 자기 죄를 겸손되이 고백하였다. 마침내 그는 거룩한 아버지의 훈시와 권고로 가슴 뿌듯한 위로를 받고 굳세어져 더 완전한 형제로 변했다.

성인은 끝으로 그에게, “내 아들, 가서 고백성사를 받고 평상시 기도하던 열심을 버러서는 안됩니다. 멀지않아 곧 알게 되겠지만 이 시련은 형제에게 아주 유익하고 큰 위로를 준다는 것을 확실히 알아두십시오”라고 일깨워 주었다.

루피노 형제는 숲속의 자기 움막집으로 돌아가 눈물을 흘리면서 기도드리고 있는데, 원수가 또 이전처럼 그리스도의 모습을 하고 나타나, “루피노 형제야, 나는 너에게 베드로 베르나르도의 아들을 믿어서는 안된다는 것과 너는 단죄받을 자니 울고 기도하며 괴로워하지 말라고 하지 않았느냐? 네가 살아 있는 동안 고생한다고 무슨 소용이 있느냐? 죽으면 틀림없이 지옥에 빠질걸 ····”하고 꾸짓었다.

루피노 형제는 즉시 “네 아가리를 벌려 보아라. 나는 그 안에 변을 보겠다”고 응수하자, 마귀는 금방 격노하여 심한 돌풍을 휘몰아 가까이 있는 수바시오산의 바윗돌을 진동시키며 사라졌다. 그 때문에 높은 데서 떨어져 구르는 바위 소리가 쿠르릉쿠르릉 한참동안 계속되었고, 구르는 돌과 돌이 거세게 맞부딪쳐서 튀기는 불꽃은 무시무시한 불덩어리가 되어 아래 골짜기로 휙휙 날아갔다. 그 돌들이 부딧칠 때마다 일으킨 벽력같은 요란한 소리에 성 프란치스코와 동료들은 깜짝 놀라 무슨 사건이 벌어졌나 해서 급히 수도원 밖으로 뛰어나왔다. (오늘날에도 그곳에는 그때 부서진 큰 돌돌과 바위조각이 산부더기를 이루고 있는 것을 볼 수가 있다).

그제야 루피노 현제는 그것이 악마가 자기를 속이려고 꾸며낸 농간이었음을 확실히 깨닫고 그 길로 성 프란치스코께 달려가서 다시 땅에 엎디어 용서를 빌었다.

성인은 친절히 그를 격려하고 위로하여 거처로 돌려보냈다. 그 후에 그가 거기서 열심히 기도하고 있을 때, 복되신 그리스도께서 발현하셔서 천상적 사랑으로 루피노의 온 영혼을 다시 뜨겁게 하시고 말씀하시기를 “잘했다. 내 아들아, 프란치스코의 말을 참 잘 믿었다. 너를 우울하게 한 것은 마귀였다. 나는 바로 네 스승인 그리스도다. 지금 네가 이런 것을 확실히 믿도록 하기 위하여 한 가지 증거를 보여주겠다. 즉, 너는 앞으로 세상 떠날 때까지 다시는 슬픔이나 근심을 느끼는 일이 없으리라”고 하시고 떠나가시면서 너무나 큰 마음의 감미로움을 남겨주고 영혼을 고양시켰기 때문에, 그 형제는 낮이나 밤이나 하느님 안에 몰입되어 자신을 잊고 있었다.

그때부터 성총 속에 더욱 굳세어지고, 자기 구원을 확신하게 되며 아주 딴 사람으로 변했다. 그를 그대로 내버려 둔다면 밤낮을 하느님의 일을 묵상하고 기도로 보냈을 것이다. 성 프란치스코는 이 루피노 형제를 살아 있는 동안 벌써 예수 그리스도에 의해 성인이 된 사람이라고 말하였고, 그가 아직 살아 있는데도, 본인이 없을 때에는 아무 거리낌없이 “성 루피노”라고 불렀다.

주: 본장의 중심인물인 루피노 형제는 성녀 클라라의 사존이었다. 그는 1210년에 입회했고, 1270년에 세상을 떠나 아씨시의 대성당에 묻혔다. 이 이야기는 루피노라고 불리우는 동굴에 있었던 까르케리의 은수처에서 있었다.

29. How St. Francis Freed Brother Rufino from a Temptation of the Devil

Brother Rufino, one of the great noblemen of Assisi, a companion of St.Francis and a man of great sanctity, was once, while St. Francis was alive, very fiercely attacked and tempted in his soul by the devil on the subject of predestination. For the ancient enemy injected the suggestion into his heart that he was damned and was not among those who were predestined to eternal life, and that whatever he did in the service of the Order was wasted. As a result of this temptation, which lasted many days, he became very sad and depressed, and he was ashamed to tell St. Francis about his conflict. Nevertheless, he did not stop performing his usual prayers and fasts.

Therefore the ancient enemy, wishing to heap sorrow onto sorrow, which sorely wounds the servants of God, also added to his inner struggle an outer one by attacking him outwardly by false apparitions.

So one day he appeared to him in the form of the Crucified one and said to him: "Oh, Brother Rufino, who do you afflict yourself with prayers and penances since you are not among those who are predestined to eternal life? And you should believe me, because I now whom I have chosen and predestined. And do not believe the son of Peter Bernardone if he tells you the contrary. And also do not ask him about this matter, because neither he nor anyone else knows it-no one but I who am the Son of God knows it. Therefore believe me for sure that you are among the damned. And Brother Francis himself, your Father, is also damned. And whoever follows him is deceived."

Brother Rufino on hearing these words became so darkened by the Prince ofDarkness that he lost all the faith and love which he had had for St. Francis, and did not want to tell him anything about himself.

But the Holy Spirit revealed what Brother Rufino did not tell the holy Father. Therefore, when St. Francis perceived spiritually the great peril of Brother Rufino, he sent Brother Masseo to him to tell him to come to him. For Brother Rufino and St. francis and Brother Masseo were staying at the Place of Mount Subasio near Assisi.

Brother Rufino answered sharply: "What have I to do with Brother Francis?"

Then Brother Masseo, who was filled with divine wisdom, clearly recognizing the deceit of the evil enemy, said: "Oh, Brother Rufino, don't you know that Brother Francis is like an angel of God who has brought light to so many souls in the world and from whom we too have so many gifts of God's grace? Therefore, by all means I urge you to come to him, because I clearly see that you are deceived by the devil."

On hearing this, Brother Rufino set out at once and went to St. Francis. And when St. Francis saw him coming in the distance, he began to cry: "Oh, Brother Rufino, you naughty boy, whom have you believed?"

And when Brother Rufino came to him, the Saint told him in detail all about the temptation, exterior and interior, which hehad had from the devil. And he showed Brother Rufino clearly that the one who had appeared to him and had suggested the above-mentioned things to him was the devil and not Christ, and therefore he should in no way consent to his suggestions.

"But when the devil says to you again, 'You are damned,'" St. Francis said, "you answer him confidently, 'Open your mouth- and I will (empty my bowels0 in it!'And let it be a sign to you that he is the devil that when you say those words, he will immediately go away. You should also have known that he was the devil because he hardened your heart to everything that is good, for that is exactly his job. But the Blessed Christ never hardens the heart of the faithful man but rather softens it, as He says through the Prophet: 'I will take away your heart of stone and will give you a heart of flesh.'"

Then Brother Rufine, seeing that St. Francis had told him in detail all about his interior and exterior temptation, and being moved to remorse by his words, began to weep bitterly and knelt before him and humbly acknowledged his fault in having concealed his temptation from him. And he remained greatly consoled and comforted by the advice of the holy Father and completely changed for the better.

Finally St. Francis said to him: "Go to confession, son. And do not stop devoting yourself to your usual prayers. And know for sure that this temptation will be very helpful and consoling to you, as you will find out in a short while."

So Brother Rufino went back to his cell to pray in thewoods. And while he was praying with many tears, the ancient enemy came in the appearance of Christ, as in the previous apparitions, and said to him: "Brother Rufino, didn't I tell you not to believe the son of Peter Bernardone and not to exhaust yourselfwith weeping and praying, because you are damned? What good does it do you to afflict yourself while you are alive, since when you die you will be damned?"

Brother Rufino quickly answered: "Open your mouth-and I will (empty my bowels) in it!"

Then the devil angrily went away with such a commotion and fall of rocks on Mount Subasio(which was nearby) that a great mass of stones hurtled down for a long while, where the fearful ravine filled with rocks is still to be seen, And the collisions of the falling rocks caused horrible flashes of fire through the ravine filled with rocks is still to be seen. Then Brother Rufino clearly realized that it had been the devil who had deceive him. So he went back to St. Francis and prostrated himself on the ground and accused himself again of his fault.

And St. Francis comforted him once more with kind words and sent him back to his cell deeply consoled.

Later while he was praying in it very devoutly, the Blessed Christ appeared to him and made his whole soul burn with divine love, saying: "Son, you did well to believe Brother Francis, because he who made you depressed was the devil. But I am Christ, your Master, and to make you perfectly sure of it I give you this sign: as long as you live, you will never again be sad or depressed."

And after saying that, Christ gave Brother Rufino His blessing and left him in such joy and peace of soul and inspiration of mind that he was absorbed in God day and night.

Thereafter he was so confirmed in grace and in the assurance of his eternal salvation that he became completely changed into a new man. And his mind was so concentrated on Heaven and he persevered so much in prayer that he would spend days and nights in praying and in contemplating divine things, if others would let him.

Therefore St. Francis used to say of him that Brother Rufino had been canonized in Heaven by the Lord Jesus Christ while he was still alive and that he would not hesitate to say "St. Rufino"(except in his presence), though he was still living on earth.

To the glory of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
