그때에 주님께서 말씀하셨다.
42 “불행하여라, 너희 바리사이들아!
너희가 박하와 운향과 모든 채소는 십일조를 내면서,
의로움과 하느님 사랑은 아랑곳하지 않기 때문이다.
그러한 십일조도 소홀히 해서는 안 되지만,
바로 이러한 것들을 실천해야 한다.
43 불행하여라, 너희 바리사이들아!
너희가 회당에서는 윗자리를 좋아하고
장터에서는 인사받기를 좋아하기 때문이다.
44 너희는 불행하여라!
너희가 드러나지 않는 무덤과 같기 때문이다.
사람들이 그 위를 밟고 다니면서도 무덤인 줄을 알지 못한다.”
45 율법 교사 가운데 어떤 사람이 예수님께,

Reading 1

Gal 5:18-25

Brothers and sisters:
If you are guided by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
Now the works of the flesh are obvious:
immorality, impurity, licentiousness, idolatry,
sorcery, hatreds, rivalry, jealousy,
outbursts of fury, acts of selfishness,
dissensions, factions, occasions of envy,
drinking bouts, orgies, and the like.
I warn you, as I warned you before,
that those who do such things will not inherit the Kingdom of God.
In contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace,
patience, kindness, generosity,
faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.
Against such there is no law.
Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified their flesh
with its passions and desires.
If we live in the Spirit, let us also follow the Spirit.

Lk 11:42-46

The Lord said:
“Woe to you Pharisees!
You pay tithes of mint and of rue and of every garden herb,
but you pay no attention to judgment and to love for God.
These you should have done, without overlooking the others.
Woe to you Pharisees!
You love the seat of honor in synagogues
and greetings in marketplaces. 
Woe to you!
You are like unseen graves over which people unknowingly walk.”

Then one of the scholars of the law said to him in reply,
“Teacher, by saying this you are insulting us too.”
And he said, “Woe also to you scholars of the law!
You impose on people burdens hard to carry,
but you yourselves do not lift one finger to touch them.”              

 

         

Paying Attention to Hard Truths

You pay tithes of mint and of rue and of every garden herb, but you pay no attention to judgment and to love for God.” 

Jesus is calling out false appearances of honor and prestige.  He is warning the Pharisees and the scholars of the law to humble themselves in front of God and to serve and not be served. 

These are hard truths to hear and accept… 

Is there a hard truth that Jesus is speaking to me right now that I need to pay closer attention to? 

Am I uncomfortable with this potential truth and trying to deflect it with honor and prestige?   

Am I paying attention to what is important beyond the initial appearances? 

What or who am I overlooking right now? 

Am I willing to see Christ and my neighbor in a deeper, more loving way?

Grant me, O Lord, to see everything now with new eyes,
to discern and test the spirits

 “Alas” and “Alas”are words which Jesus begins addressing first a Pharisee and secondly a lawyer. Actually both are protectors of the Law. These verses of Jesus, in Luke 11, begin seven lines earlier when He offers the image of a lamp and physical sight.

A lamp is meant to give light so other things may be seen. The lamp is the image of the human mind. Its real purpose is so the other persons and things may be seen and appreciated. The Pharisee welcomes Jesus into his house for dinner, but his darkness of mind prevents him from seeing Jesus clearly, but rather sees him through the darkness of legal adherence. He mis-sees Jesus except his seeing Jesus not washing his hands before dinner according to the Law of Moses.

Jesus gives him the “alas” by presenting him with what the Pharisee performs that is a proper sense of love from or for God, the real source of the Law.

Then the Lawyer gets his turn at an “alas”. These keepers-of-the Law also keep burdening the people and do not assist them, because these Lawyers, like the Pharisees need to be seen like lamps which are giving off light so as to be seen as assisting others to be seen by that Light of Jesus.

The whole thing comes down to two other important words for Jesus. What if the difference between impressing and expressing? Impressing is from the outside, the exterior, as the lamp’s just wanting to be seen. Impressing is hoping that the outside of the cup is acceptable, impressive and those who are easily impressed deal well with their own exteriorities.

Expressing flows from some depth of person and commitment. The expressor wishes to touch in the interior of others with the Light of Truth and Grace. Expressing is responsive to a truth or sense which flows up from the spirit and heart hoping to illumine something deeper within the spirit and soul and heart of the hearers. This takes courage while the other takes ungrateful pride.

Jesus is not alasing over these two groups as to condemn, but dramatically inviting them to see the Light and be freed from the darkness of legal reacting. Jesus confronts blind legal functioning. He is inviting constantly His hearers, to respond to the Light-Life of His teaching and way of expressing the interior of God Who is Love.

FLESHING IT OUT

“Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified their flesh with its passions and desires.” —Galatians 5:24

By “the flesh,” the Bible refers to our fallen human nature. “The tendency of the flesh is toward death” (Rm 8:6). “The flesh in its tendency is at enmity with God; it is not subject to God’s law. Indeed, it cannot be; those who are in the flesh cannot please God” (Rm 8:7-8). A few of the works of the flesh are: “lewd conduct, impurity, licentiousness, idolatry, sorcery, hostilities, bickering, jealousy, outbursts of rage, selfish rivalries, dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and the like” (Gal 5:19-21). The flesh can be used to enslave us (see Rm 7:14) and will try to start a civil war against our own souls (1 Pt 2:11). Therefore, it is unrealistic and foolish to make provisions for the desires of the flesh (see Rm 13:14; 8:12). The flesh must not only be controlled, but crucified (Gal 5:24). Otherwise, we will stifle the Spirit (see Gal 5:17), become slaves, and destroy ourselves.

We crucify “the flesh with its passions and desires” by living in the Spirit and following the Spirit’s lead (Gal 5:24-25). The Spirit lusts “against the flesh; the two are directly opposed” (Gal 5:17). “If you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the evil deeds of the body, you will live” (Rm 8:13). The Holy Spirit wants to get all our attention, time, and energy. Then there’s nothing left for the flesh, which then dies of neglect and starvation. Even when the flesh tries to assert itself, its desires are ignored because of our immersion into, that is, baptism in the Spirit. May we live in the Spirit and with the Spirit in us. May we be so Spirit-filled that there is no room for the flesh.

Prayer:  Father, may I love You so much that I will crucify my flesh and be crucified to the world (Gal 6:14).

Promise:  “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patient endurance, kindness, generosity, faith, mildness, and chastity.” —Gal 5:22-23

 Why does Jesus single out the religious teachers and lawyers for some rather strong words of rebuke? The word woe can also be translated as alas. It is as much an expression of sorrowful pity as it is of anger. Why did Jesus lament and issue such a stern rebuke? Jesus was angry with the religious leaders because they failed to listen to God's word and they misled the people they were supposed to guide in the ways of God.


God's commandments are rooted in his love and care for us
The scribes devoted their lives to the study of the Law of Moses and regarded themselves as legal experts in it. They divided the ten commandments and precepts into thousands of tiny rules and regulations. They were so exacting in their interpretations and in trying to live them out, that they had little time for anything else. By the time they finished compiling their interpretations it took no less than fifty volumes to contain them! In their misguided zeal, they required unnecessary and burdensome rules which obscured the more important matters of religion, such as love of God and love of neighbor. They were leading people to Pharisaism rather than to God.

Do not lay heavy burdens on others
Jesus used the example of tithing to show how far they had missed the mark. God had commanded a tithe of the first fruits of one's labor as an expression of thanksgiving and honor for his providential care for his people (Deuteronomy 14:22; Leviticus 27:30). The scribes, however, went to extreme lengths to tithe on insignificant things (such as tiny plants) with great mathematical accuracy. They were very attentive to minute matters of little importance, but they neglected to care for the needy and the weak. Jesus admonished them because their hearts were not right. They were filled with pride and contempt for others. They put unnecessary burdens on others while neglecting to show charity, especially to the weak and the poor. They meticulously went through the correct motions of conventional religion while forgetting the realities.

Why does Jesus also compare them with "unmarked graves"? According to Numbers 19:16 contact with a grave made a person ritually unclean for seven days. Jesus turns the table on the Pharisees by declaring that those who come into contact with them and listen to their self-made instruction are likewise defiled by their false doctrine. They infect others with wrong ideas of God and of his intentions. Since the Pharisees are "unmarked", other people do not recognize the decay within and do not realize the danger of spiritual contamination. The Pharisees must have taken Jesus' accusation as a double insult: They are not only spiritually unclean themselves because they reject the word of God, but they also contaminate others with their dangerous "leaven" as well (see Luke 12:1).

Love lifts the burdens of others
What was the point of Jesus' lesson? The essence of God's commandments is love - love of the supreme good - God himself and love of our neighbor who is made in the image and likeness of God. God is love (1 John 4:8) and everything he does flows from his love for us. God's love is unconditional and is wholly directed towards the good of others. True love both embraces and lifts the burdens of others. Paul the Apostle reminds us that "God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit which has been given us" (Romans 5:5). Do you help your neighbors carry their burdens? God gives each of us sufficient grace for each day to love as he loves and to lift the burdens of others that they, too, may experience the grace and love of Jesus Christ.

Lord Jesus, inflame my heart with your love that I may always pursue what matters most - love of you, my Lord and my God, and love of my fellow neighbor whom you have made in your own image and likeness. Free my heart from selfish desires that I may only have room for kindness, mercy, and goodness toward every person I know and meet.

"Just as the scribes and Pharisees wickedly sat upon the throne of Moses, so do some in the church who sit upon the ecclesiastical throne. There are some in the church who have the right understanding of the law and pass it on correctly. They say what each person needs to do, but they themselves do not do it. Some of them lay heavy burdens upon the shoulders of men, but they won't even lift a finger to help. These are the ones the Savior is talking about when he says, 'Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of God' (Matthew 5:19). There are others, however, who sit on the throne, who act before they speak and speak wisely, restraining those who are disordered. They place merciful burdens on the shoulders of others. They themselves are the first to lift the heavy burden, for the exhortation of other listeners.
