Monday of the Twenty-eighth Week in Ordinary Time
Reading 1
Brothers and sisters:
It is written that Abraham had two sons,
one by the slave woman and the other by the freeborn woman.
The son of the slave woman was born naturally,
the son of the freeborn through a promise.
Now this is an allegory.
These women represent two covenants.
One was from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery;
this is Hagar.
But the Jerusalem above is freeborn, and she is our mother.
For it is written:
Rejoice, you barren one who bore no children;
break forth and shout, you who were not in labor;
for more numerous are the children of the deserted one
than of her who has a husband.
Therefore, brothers and sisters,
we are children not of the slave woman
but of the freeborn woman.
For freedom Christ set us free; so stand firm
and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery.
Responsorial Psalm
R. (see 2) Blessed be the name of the Lord forever.
or:
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Praise, you servants of the LORD,
praise the name of the LORD.
Blessed be the name of the LORD
both now and forever.
R. Blessed be the name of the Lord forever.
or:
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
From the rising to the setting of the sun
is the name of the LORD to be praised.
High above all nations is the LORD;
above the heavens is his glory.
R. Blessed be the name of the Lord forever.
or:
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Who is like the LORD, our God,
who looks upon the heavens and the earth below?
He raises up the lowly from the dust;
from the dunghill he lifts up the poor.
R. Blessed be the name of the Lord forever.
or:
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel
While still more people gathered in the crowd, Jesus said to them,
“This generation is an evil generation;
it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it,
except the sign of Jonah.
Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites,
so will the Son of Man be to this generation.
At the judgment
the queen of the south will rise with the men of this generation
and she will condemn them,
because she came from the ends of the earth
to hear the wisdom of Solomon,
and there is something greater than Solomon here.
At the judgment the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation
and condemn it,
because at the preaching of Jonah they repented,
and there is something greater than Jonah here.”

The Old Testament Law, symbolized by the Ten Commandments was a form of catechesis of God’s minimal desires for humans to live in peace with one another. Christians who read the New Testament understand that Jesus’ catechesis stretches us further. The law says we must not kill one another, Jesus says we are to abide by a practice of love for our enemies rather than a law of getting even. We must not only NOT take God’s name to witness falsehood, but we are to speak only and always the truth.
Paul makes a point in the letter to the Galatians that the Law that Christians must follow is the law of Freedom. We must choose God and God’s compassion. We must imitate God and go the extra mile of caretaking. We can’t do things because we must, but because we want to . . .lovingly.
For Paul, the Old Commands put a form of slavery upon humans – but Jesus’ death and resurrection allows us to step away from the structures of the Old Law and choose to live as Jesus lived. Remember that Jesus told the apostles that with the Spirit they would do greater things than he as was able to do. Most of us kind of ignore the implications of that because it implies that Jesus is fully human and was bound in humanity by the Covenant of Circumcision. In His Resurrection Jesus not only overcame death he even overcame the Old Law and its slavery to religious formulas. He was restored to the full exercise of His Divine Wisdom that he had set aside to be born a human subject to the Old Law.
We, however, have been birthed into the Law of the Spirit – the ability to see reality as God does, to love as God does etc. Why and how is this possible? Because we are born into the Resurrected Christ – the real core of the Church and the accomplishment of the inauguration of the Kingdom of God in this world. We do not have to hate and get even, we do not have to sin by choice, we do not have to live in the slavery of the Old Law – we are born into Eternal Life through the gift of Baptism.
Some weeks ago, I participated in the baptism of a beautiful infant girl. I was one of the oldest people at this gathering – I had taught half of the young adults who brought their children and even one or two who brought grandchildren. I was moved by the gathering and the love and friendship expressed there, but as I visited with these young colleagues, I was saddened by what seemed to be an inability to get beyond the structures of human sin around them and see themselves called to live in the discipline of the reign of God right now. They could not believe the Good News of the Gospel in a faith community that required patience and endurance.
Back when I was a young woman I attended a talk by a famous German theologian, Karl Rahner, S.J. He was speaking about living the Christian life in “post modernity.” And he challenged the group of us in attendance to take the New Testament very seriously. He insisted that to live as a Christian we would all have to be mystics. We would have to take Baptism as transformative of our whole humanity very seriously, that we would have to be men and women who took the freedom of the law of love seriously.
In today’s Gospel we hear Jesus telling us that it is an evil generation who demands the security of signs and structures of certainty. Faith is relationship that must be lived in freedom and commitment even when it is unbelievably difficult – and seemingly against all odds. If we are not willing to enter prayer seriously, if we are not prepared to live in faith not human security, if we won’t come out of our gated communities of “our people” rather than the tremendous uncertainty of “all people,” if we will not be faithful to the Church that bears the teachings of Jesus into history, then faith will die out in in hearts and lives – and it will not be available for that generation of beautiful children being born right now. We have nothing to hand on to them if we do not live it now.
Today, and every day we are invited to pray for the ability to pray. We are called to believe the humanly unbelievable because with God ALL THINGS are possible. We are invited to live in the freedom of discerned decisions of God’s grace supported by the promise of God’s mercy instead of the surety of laws and institutions. We have been given the Grace of Baptism and are continuously invited to the Eucharist to affirm that Baptism and grow into its Divine characteristics within us.
As this year of our Lord passes into history, I pray that I will be more authentic in living the Christian Faith and I invite you to pray with me in asking this for yourself and each person you love.

HEARING TEST
“At the judgment, the citizens of Nineveh will rise along with the present generation, and they will condemn it. For at the preaching of Jonah they reformed, but you have a greater than Jonah here.” —Luke 11:32
When Jonah spoke, 120,000 wicked Ninevites listened and repented (Jon 3:10; 4:11). When Solomon spoke, the queen of the south “came from the farthest corner of the world to listen” (Lk 11:31). When Jesus speaks through the Church, in the Mass, through the Bible, and in our families, do we listen? How many of us are devoting ourselves to the apostles’ instructions, that is, the teachings of the Church? (see Acts 2:42) Are we reading the Catechism of the Catholic Church? Do we bother to find out what the Pope is teaching? Do we receive Jesus and His Word at Mass as much as possible? Do we use One Bread, One Body to help us sit at Jesus’ feet and listen to His words at daily Mass? (see Lk 10:39) Because we take the Bible “not as the word of men, but as it truly is, the word of God” (1 Thes 2:13), do we make time to read the Bible daily? Are we open to the Lord speaking to us through our family and the people we see each day? Is there any subject that we will not allow even God to mention to us?
Ask the Lord for the grace to listen to Him in your most difficult circumstance. Repent and feel your spiritual ears open. Deny yourself and hear Jesus’ words: “Blest are your ears because they hear. I assure you, many a prophet and many a saint longed to...hear what you hear but did not hear it” (Mt 13:16-17). “Let him who has ears heed the Spirit’s word” (Rv 2:7, 11, 17, 29; 3:6, 13, 22).
Prayer: Father, may I hear that You are Lord alone, and may I love You with all my heart (Dt 6:4-5).
Promise: “It was for liberty that Christ freed us. So stand firm, and do not take on yourselves the yoke of slavery a second time!” —Gal 5:1
Praise: When Jonathan truly heard the Word of God speak to him, he became a new man in Christ.

Do you pay attention to warning signs? Many fatalities could be avoided if people took the warning signs seriously. When the religious leaders demanded a sign from Jesus, he gave them a warning to avert spiritual disaster. It was characteristic of the Jews that they demanded "signs" from God's messengers to authenticate their claims. When the religious leaders pressed Jesus to give proof for his claims he says in so many words that he is God's sign and that they need no further evidence from heaven than his own person.
The people of Nineveh were saved because they accepted the sign and message of Jonah
The Ninevites recognized God's warning when Jonah spoke to them, and they repented (Jonah 3:1-10). And the Queen of Sheba recognized God's wisdom in Solomon (1 Kings 10:1-10). Jonah was God's sign and his message was the message of God for the people of Nineveh. Unfortunately the religious leaders were not content to accept the signs right before their eyes. They had rejected the message of John the Baptist and now they reject Jesus as God's Anointed One (Messiah) and they fail to heed his message.
Jesus' death and resurrection brings us new ever lasting life
Simeon had prophesied at Jesus' birth that he was "destined for the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed so that inner thoughts of many will be revealed" (Luke 2:34- 35). Just as Jonah spent 3 days in the belly of the whale before he delivered the Ninevites from death and destruction, Jesus likewise spent 3 days in the tomb before rising again to save us from sin and death and bring us new life. Jesus confirmed his message of good news and deliverance with many miracles in preparation for the greatest sign of all - his resurrection on the third day.
The Lord Jesus came to set us free from slavery to sin and hurtful desires. Through the gift of the Holy Spirit he pours his love into our hearts that we may understand his will for our lives and walk in his way of holiness (Romans 5:5). God searches our hearts, not to condemn us, but to show us where we need his saving grace and help. He calls us to seek him with true repentance, humility, and the honesty to see our sins for what they really are - a rejection of his love and will for our lives.
Listen to God's word of wisdom and you will find true life and everlasting joy
God will transform us if we listen to his word and allow his Holy Spirit to work in our lives. Ask the Lord to renew your mind and to increase your thirst for his wisdom. James says that the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, without uncertainty or insincerity (James 3:17). A double-minded person cannot receive this kind of wisdom. The single of heart desire one thing alone - God's pleasure. God wants us to delight in him and to know the freedom of his truth and love. Do you thirst for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord (Hebrews 12:14)?
Lord Jesus, give me a heart that loves what is good and in accord with your will and fill me with your wisdom that I my understand your ways. Give me the grace and the courage to reject whatever is evil and contrary to your will.
Psalm 98:1-4
1 O sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things! His right hand and his holy arm have gotten him victory.
2 The LORD has made known his victory, he has revealed his vindication in the sight of the nations.
3 He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness to the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God.
4 Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises!
Daily Quote from the Early Church Fathers: The sign of Jonah, by an anonymous early author from the Greek church
"'What is the sign of Jonah? The stumbling block of the cross. So it is not the disputers of knowledge who will be saved but those who believe true teaching. For the cross of Christ is indeed a stumbling block to those who dispute knowledge but salvation to those who believe. Paul testifies to this: 'But we, for our part, preach the crucified Christ - to the Jews indeed a stumbling block and to the Gentiles foolishness, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ, the power of God and the wisdom of God' (1 Corinthians 1:23-24). Why do the Jews seek signs and the Greeks seek wisdom? God pointed to the sign of the stumbling block of the cross to both the Jews and the Greeks. Thus those who wish to find Christ not through faith but through wisdom will perish on the stumbling block of foolishness. Those who wish to know the Son of God not through faith but through a demonstration of signs will remain trapped in their disbelief, falling on the stumbling block of his death. It is no small wonder that the Jews, considering the death of Christ, thought he was merely a man, when even Christians - as they purport to be but really are not - because of his death are reluctant to declare the only begotten, the crucified, as incomparable majesty." (excerpt from INCOMPLETE WORK ON MATTHEW, HOMILY 30, the Greek fathers).
