1독서

 로마서. 1,1-7

Reading 1 Rom 1:1-7

Paul, a slave of Christ Jesus,
called to be an Apostle and set apart for the Gospel of God,
which he promised previously through his prophets in the holy Scriptures,
the Gospel about his Son, descended from David according to the flesh,
but established as Son of God in power
according to the Spirit of holiness
through resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Through him we have received the grace of apostleship,
to bring about the obedience of faith,
for the sake of his name, among all the Gentiles,
among whom are you also, who are called to belong to Jesus Christ;
to all the beloved of God in Rome, called to be holy.
Grace to you and peace from God our Father
and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Responsorial Psalm

Ps 98:1bcde, 2-3ab, 3cd-4

R. (2a) The Lord has made known his salvation.
Sing to the LORD a new song,
for he has done wondrous deeds;
His right hand has won victory for him,
his holy arm.
R. The Lord has made known his salvation.
The LORD has made his salvation known:
in the sight of the nations he has revealed his justice.
He has remembered his kindness and his faithfulness
toward the house of Israel.
R. The Lord has made known his salvation.
All the ends of the earth have seen
the salvation by our God.
Sing joyfully to the LORD, all you lands;
break into song; sing praise.
R. The Lord has made known his salvation.

Gospel

Lk 11:29-32

While still more people gathered in the crowd, Jesus said to them,
"This generation is an evil generation;
it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it,
except the sign of Jonah.
Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites,
so will the Son of Man be to this generation.
At the judgment
the queen of the south will rise with the men of this generation
and she will condemn them,
because she came from the ends of the earth
to hear the wisdom of Solomon,
and there is something greater than Solomon here.
At the judgment the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation
and condemn it,
because at the preaching of Jonah they repented,

and their is something greater than Jonah here."

«People of the present time are evil people. They ask for a sign»

Fr. Raimondo M. SORGIA Mannai OP
(San Domenico di Fiesole, Florencia, Italy)

Today, Christ's sweet —but stern— voice admonishes those who believe they certainly deserve a “ticket” for Paradise, just because they may say: «Jesus, how wonderful you are!». Christ has paid the price of our salvation without excluding anyone, but, all the same, some minimum conditions must be kept. And, amongst them, not pretending to have Christ doing all the work while we do nothing at all. That would not only be sheer foolishness, but wicked arrogance. This is why, the Lord has no doubt using the word “evil”: «People of the present time are evil people. They ask for a sign but no sign will be given to them except the sign of Jonah» (Lk 11:29). He calls them “evil” because they want to see first his spectacular miracles in order for them to grant their eventual and condescending adhesion.

Not even in front of his own Nazareth countrymen did He agree, because —demanding as they were!— they expected Jesus to sign up his mission as Prophet and Messiah by means of wonderful prodigies. They would like to savor as comfortably seated watchers in a theater. But this is not possible: the Lord offers the salvation, but only to those who submit to him through an obedience born from the faith, that waits and says nothing. This total faith (that God himself has planted in our inside as a seed of grace) is what He wants from us.

A testimony against those believers keeping a caricature of their faith will be the queen of the South, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and it turned out that «here there is greater than Solomon» (Lk 11:31). There is a proverb that goes «there's none so deaf as those who will not hear». Christ, condemned to death, will rise in three days: He will offer salvation to whoever recognizes him, while all others —when He comes back as a Judge— can wait for nothing but their sentence because of their stubborn disbelief. Let us accept him with advanced faith and love. We shall recognize him and He will recognize us as belonging to him. Don Alberione, servant of God said: «God wastes no light: He lights the lamps as needed, but always on time».

As I reflected on today’s Gospel reading where Jesus says “no sign will be given other than the sign of Jonah” I was struck with the realization that really, Jesus is the sign.  Jonah proclaimed repentance, but there is something greater here – Jesus.  Jesus proclaims and shows us the way to salvation.  He preaches “Love one another, as I have love you.” (Jn 13:34).  He preached the Beatitudes in Matthew:

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Jesus shows us that we must be willing to die to experience new life.  This can be seen literally in his death and resurrection, but also he calls us to die figuratively, to ourselves, to let go of the need for revenge or the hurt or the control or whatever it is that gets in the way of receiving the grace which God offers to us – new life, resurrection.  This can be experienced simply as we transition from one stage of life to another.  For instance, when our children leave home.  We grief the loss of them daily in our lives but then discover the God is inviting us to a new activity or ministry.  If we get stuck in the daily parenting role or the grief of it, we will miss the “new life” God is offering.

Let us reflect today on Who are we being called to love?  What are we being called to “die to” today?  What is in the way of us realizing that Jesus is the “something greater here”?  Take notice.

SOMETHING GREATER (LK 11:32)

"The Lord has made His salvation known." Psalm 98:2

God can work through us or despite us. Certainly, He would prefer to work through us. However, lest we think that we are irreplaceable, the Church holds up Jonah as a sign for us (Lk 11:29). The fruit which God produced through Jonah was remarkable, for an entire city repented and turned to the Lord (Jon 3:10). But first Jonah had to spend three days "buried" inside a great fish (Jon 2:1). Then on the third day, Jonah received a new life, a foreshadowing of Jesus' Resurrection from the dead on the third day.

Another way to look at the sign of Jonah is that God wants our obedient service. Jonah was unmotivated and spiteful. He preached to Nineveh not because he had a heart to obey God and love the people to whom he was sent, but because that was preferable to being swallowed by a fish. Jonah didn't even want the Ninevites to heed his own message! Jonah didn't preach a message of hope, inspiration, or mercy. And yet, God worked wondrous conversions through Jonah's "preaching."

God called Jonah and worked both with him and despite him. God has also called each of us (Rm 1:1, 6, 7). May we learn from Jonah to wholeheartedly do the will of God in all that he has called us to do for His Kingdom.

Prayer: Father, work through me so thoroughly that others will see that Christ is living in me (Gal 2:19-20).
Promise: "...grace and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ." —Rm 1:7
Praise: Pope St. Callistus, one of the early pope-martyrs, praised God by living a life of extraordinary forgiveness.

"This is an evil generation - it seeks a sign"

Do you pay attention to warning signs? Many fatalities could be avoided if people took the warning signs seriously. When the religious leaders demanded a sign from Jesus, he gave them a warning to avert spiritual disaster. It was characteristic of the Jews that they demanded "signs" from God's messengers to authenticate their claims. When the religious leaders pressed Jesus to give proof for his claims he says in so many words that he is God's sign and that they need no further evidence from heaven than his own person.

The people of Nineveh were saved because they accepted the sign and message of Jonah
The Ninevites recognized God's warning when Jonah spoke to them, and they repented (Jonah 3:1-10). And the Queen of Sheba recognized God's wisdom in Solomon (1 Kings 10:1-10). Jonah was God's sign and his message was the message of God for the people of Nineveh. Unfortunately the religious leaders were not content to accept the signs right before their eyes. They had rejected the message of John the Baptist and now they reject Jesus as God's Anointed one (Messiah) and they fail to heed his message.

Jesus' death and resurrection brings us new ever lasting life
Simeon had prophesied at Jesus' birth that he was "destined for the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed so that inner thoughts of many will be revealed" (Luke 2:34- 35). Just as Jonah spent 3 days in the belly of the whale before he delivered the Ninevites from death and destruction, Jesus likewise spent 3 days in the tomb before rising again to save us from sin and death and bring us new life. Jesus confirmed his message of good news and deliverance with many miracles in preparation for the greatest sign of all - his resurrection on the third day.

The Lord Jesus came to set us free from slavery to sin and hurtful desires. Through the gift of the Holy Spirit he pours his love into our hearts that we may understand his will for our lives and walk in his way of holiness (Romans 5:5). God searches our hearts, not to condemn us, but to show us where we need his saving grace and help. He calls us to seek him with true repentance, humility, and the honesty to see our sins for what they really are - a rejection of his love and will for our lives.

Listen to God's word of wisdom and you will find true life and everlasting joy
God will transform us if we listen to his word and allow his Holy Spirit to work in our lives. Ask the Lord to renew your mind and to increase your thirst for his wisdom. James says that the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, without uncertainty or insincerity (James 3:17). A double-minded person cannot receive this kind of wisdom. The single of heart desire one thing alone - God's pleasure. God wants us to delight in him and to know the freedom of his truth and love. Do you thirst for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord (Hebrews 12:14)?

"Lord Jesus, give me a heart that loves what is good and in accord with your will and fill me with your wisdom that I my understand your ways. Give me the grace and the courage to reject whatever is evil and contrary to your will."

Psalm 98:1-4

1 O sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things!  His right hand and his holy arm  have gotten him victory.
2 The LORD has made known his victory, he has revealed his vindication in the sight of the nations.
3 He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness to the house of Israel.  All the ends of the earth have seen  the victory of our God.
4 Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises!

Daily Quote from the early church fathers: The sign of Jonah, by an anonymous early author from the Greek church

"'What is the sign of Jonah? The stumbling block of the cross. So it is not the disputers of knowledge who will be saved but those who believe true teaching. For the cross of Christ is indeed a stumbling block to those who dispute knowledge but salvation to those who believe. Paul testifies to this: 'But we, for our part, preach the crucified Christ - to the Jews indeed a stumbling block and to the Gentiles foolishness, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ, the power of God and the wisdom of God' (1 Corinthians 1:23-24). Why do the Jews seek signs and the Greeks seek wisdom? God pointed to the sign of the stumbling block of the cross to both the Jews and the Greeks. Thus those who wish to find Christ not through faith but through wisdom will perish on the stumbling block of foolishness. Those who wish to know the Son of God not through faith but through a demonstration of signs will remain trapped in their disbelief, falling on the stumbling block of his death. It is no small wonder that the Jews, considering the death of Christ, thought he was merely a man, when even Christians - as they purport to be but really are not - because of his death are reluctant to declare the only begotten, the crucified, as incomparable majesty." (excerpt from INCOMPLETE WORK on MATTHEW, HOMILY 30, the Greek fathers).
