제1독서
요엘 예언서. 4,12-21

Reading
Jl 4:12-21
Let the nations bestir themselves and come up
to the Valley of Jehoshaphat;
For there will I sit in judgment
upon all the neighboring nations.
Apply the sickle,
for the harvest is ripe;
Come and tread,
for the wine press is full;
The vats overflow,
for great is their malice.
Crowd upon crowd
in the valley of decision;
For near is the day of the LORD
in the valley of decision.
Sun and moon are darkened,
and the stars withhold their brightness.
The LORD roars from Zion,
and from Jerusalem raises his voice;
The heavens and the earth quake,
but the LORD is a refuge to his people,
a stronghold to the children of Israel.
Then shall you know that I, the LORD, am your God,
dwelling on Zion, my holy mountain;
Jerusalem shall be holy,
and strangers shall pass through her no more.
And then, on that day,
the mountains shall drip new wine,
and the hills shall flow with milk;
And the channels of Judah
shall flow with water:
A fountain shall issue from the house of the LORD,
to water the Valley of Shittim.
Egypt shall be a waste,
and Edom a desert waste,
Because of violence done to the people of Judah,
because they shed innocent blood in their land.
But Judah shall abide forever,
and Jerusalem for all generations.
I will avenge their blood,
and not leave it unpunished.
The LORD dwells in Zion.
Responsorial Psalm
Ps 97:1-2, 5-6, 11-12
The LORD is king; let the earth rejoice;
let the many isles be glad.
Clouds and darkness are round about him,
justice and judgment are the foundation of his throne.
R. Rejoice in the Lord, you just!
The mountains melt like wax before the LORD,
before the LORD of all the earth.
The heavens proclaim his justice,
and all peoples see his glory.
R. Rejoice in the Lord, you just!
Light dawns for the just;
and gladness, for the upright of heart.
Be glad in the LORD, you just,
and give thanks to his holy name.
R. Rejoice in the Lord, you just!
Gospel
Lk 11:27-28
a woman from the crowd called out and said to him,
"Blessed is the womb that carried you
and the breasts at which you nursed."
He replied, "Rather, blessed are those
who hear the word of God and observe it."

«Blessed is the one who bore you and nursed you!»
Fr. Jaume AYMAR i Ragolta
(Badalona, Barcelona, Spain)
Today, we hear the best compliment Jesus could make of his own Mother: «Surely blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it as well!» (Lk 11:28). With this reply, Jesus Christ does not reject the enthusiastic praise that plain woman dedicated to his Mother, but He acknowledges it and goes even further, when stating that the Blessed Virgin Mary is blessed —mostly!— because she has been good and faithful in keeping the word of God.
At times, people ask me whether we Christians believe in predestination, as other religions do. Certainly not!: we Christians believe God has reserved for us a destination of happiness. God wants us to be happy, fortunate, blessed. Take notice how this word is being repeated in Jesus' teachings: «Blessed, blessed, blessed...». «Blessed are the poor, the meek, the merciful, those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, those who have not seen and yet have believed» (cf. Mt 5:3-12; Jn 20:29). God wants our happiness, a happiness that begins right here in this world, even though the path leading to it is not wealth, or power, or easy success, or fame, but, the poor and humble love of he who expects it all. The joy to believe! That joy Jacques Maritain, the converted one, spoke about.
It is a kind of happiness which is greater than the joy of living, because we believe in an endless and eternal life. Mary, Jesus' Mother, is not only blessed because she bore him and nursed him —as spontaneously surmised that local woman— but, mainly, because of her having heard the Word and kept it: for having loved and having let his Son Jesus love her. As the poet wrote: «Being able to say “mother” and being addressed as “my son” / is what God envied us». Let Mary, Mother of Divine Love, pray for us.

At first glance, today’s Gospel might appear quite simple due to its brevity. However, there are multiple layers embedded in the clear message of the reading. Mary the mother of Jesus is central to this message. When we pray we recognize the privilege it was for her to be the mother of Jesus “Blessed are you among women.” However, Mary’s true significance was not just in her being chosen to be the mother of Jesus but in her unconditional “yes” she gave in response to God’s request of her. She heard God’s word and acted upon it for her whole life.
In a similar vein the power of Jesus lay not just in his ability to silence his critics and his accusers, his power over demons or even in his miracles. Jesus also heard the word of His Father and kept that word in his actions—even unto his death.
So it must be for us as well. The only greatness that matters, the only greatness we should be concerned about is identifying what our Father asks of us and keeping his word. Our task is clear. Not only must we listen to and reflect upon the word of God—we must observe it. And that observation mandates we act on it.

HOW TO LIVE THE LIFE OF BLESSING
" 'Rather,' He replied, 'blest are they who hear the word of God and keep it.' " Luke 11:28
Elizabeth proclaimed of Mary: "Blest are you among women and blest is the Fruit of your womb" (Lk 1:42). Mary herself prophesied: "All ages to come shall call me blessed" (Lk 1:48). "While [Jesus] was saying this a woman from the crowd" confirmed Mary's prophecy (Lk 11:27). The woman called out: "Blest is the womb that bore You and the breasts that nursed You" (Lk 11:27). Jesus agreed that His mother was blessed, but not so much for motherhood as for hearing and observing God's Word (Lk 11:28). In that case, we too can be blessed. You who read this book probably know the Church's teachings, especially the Bible. Because you have heard God's Word, you have the possibility of doing His Word and thereby being blessed. However, our natural tendency is toward passivity and inertia. We tend not to do God's Word. Nonetheless, the Lord is giving us His grace so that we will go beyond our natural tendency and supernaturally do, love, and share God's Word. Those are truly blessed who live in this supernatural dimension of grace to do His Word. Be like Mary. Live in grace. Do God's Word. Be blessed now, always, and forever.
Prayer: Father, may I not only receive a blessing but live in blessing and be a blessing (see Gn 12:2-3).
Promise: "Near is the day of the Lord in the valley of decision." —Jl 4:14
Praise: Helen's lived-out faith inspired the rest of her family. |

"Hear the word of God and keep it"
Who do you seek to favor and bless? When an admirer wished to compliment Jesus by praising his mother, Jesus did not deny the truth of the blessing she pronounced. Her beatitude (which means "blessedness" or "happiness") recalls Mary's canticle: All generations will call me blessed (Luke 1:48). Jesus adds to her words by pointing to the source of all true blessedness or happiness - union with God in heart, mind, and will.
We can hear God's Word and believe it
Mary humbly submitted herself to the miraculous plan of God for the incarnation of his only begotten Son - the Word of God made flesh in her womb - by declaring: I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word (Luke 1:38). Mary heard the word spoken to her by the angel sent by God and she believed it.
On another occasion Jesus remarked that whoever does the will of God is a friend of God and a member of his family - his sons and daughters who have been ransomed by the precious blood of Christ (Luke 8:21). They are truly blessed because they know their God personally and they find joy in hearing and obeying his word.
Jesus unites us with our heavenly Father
Our goal in life, the very reason we were created in the first place, is for union with God. We were made for God and our hearts are restless until they rest in him. Lucian of Antioch (240-312), an early Christian theologian and martyr, once said that "a Christian's only relatives are the saints." Those who follow Jesus Christ and who seek the will of God enter into a new family, a family of "saints" here on earth and in heaven. Jesus changes the order of relationships and shows that true kinship is not just a matter of flesh and blood. Our adoption as sons and daughters of God transforms all our relationships and requires a new order of loyalty to God and his kingdom. Do you hunger for God and for his word?
"Lord Jesus, my heart is restless until it rests in you. Help me to live in your presence and in the knowledge of your great love for me. May I seek to please you in all that I do, say, and think."
Psalm 97:1-2, 5-6, 11-12
1 The LORD reigns; let the earth rejoice; let the many coast lands be glad!
2 Clouds and thick darkness are round about him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.
5 The mountains melt like wax before the LORD, before the Lord of all the earth.
6 The heavens proclaim his righteousness; and all the peoples behold his glory.
11 Light dawns for the righteous, and joy for the upright in heart.
12 Rejoice in the LORD, O you righteous, and give thanks to his holy name!
Daily Quote from the early church fathers: Blessings for hearing and keeping the Word, by Augustine of Hippo, 354-430 A.D.
"Mary was more blessed in accepting the faith of Christ than in conceiving the flesh of Christ. To someone who said, 'Blessed is the womb that bore you,' he replied, 'Rather, blessed are they who hear the word of God and keep it.' Finally, for his brothers, his relatives according to the flesh who did not believe in him, of what advantage was that relationship? Even her maternal relationship would have done Mary no good unless she had borne Christ more happily in her heart than in her flesh." (excerpt from HOLY VIRGINITY 3.1)
