1독서

 로마서. 1,16-25

Reading 1

 Rom 1:16-25

Brothers and sisters:
I am not ashamed of the Gospel.
It is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes:
for Jew first, and then Greek.
For in it is revealed the righteousness of God from faith to faith;
as it is written, "The one who is righteous by faith will live."
The wrath of God is indeed being revealed from heaven
against every impiety and wickedness
of those who suppress the truth by their wickedness.
For what can be known about God is evident to them,
because God made it evident to them.
Ever since the creation of the world,
his invisible attributes of eternal power and divinity
have been able to be understood and perceived in what he has made.
As a result, they have no excuse;
for although they knew God
they did not accord him glory as God or give him thanks.
Instead, they became vain in their reasoning,
and their senseless minds were darkened.
While claiming to be wise, they became fools
and exchanged the glory of the immortal God
for the likeness of an image of mortal man
or of birds or of four-legged animals or of snakes.
Therefore, God handed them over to impurity
through the lusts of their hearts
for the mutual degradation of their bodies.
They exchanged the truth of God for a lie
and revered and worshiped the creature rather than the creator,
who is blessed forever. Amen.

Responsorial Psalm

Ps 19:2-3, 4-5

R. (2a) The heavens proclaim the glory of God.
The heavens declare the glory of God,
and the firmament proclaims his handiwork.
Day pours out the word to day,
and night to night imparts knowledge.
R. The heavens proclaim the glory of God.
Not a word nor a discourse
whose voice is not heard;
Through all the earth their voice resounds,
and to the ends of the world, their message.
R. The heavens proclaim the glory of God.

Gospel

11:37-41

After Jesus had spoken,
a Pharisee invited him to dine at his home.
He entered and reclined at table to eat.
The Pharisee was amazed to see
that he did not observe the prescribed washing before the meal.
The Lord said to him, "Oh you Pharisees!
Although you cleanse the outside of the cup and the dish,
inside you are filled with plunder and evil.
You fools!
Did not the maker of the outside also make the inside?
But as to what is within, give alms,

and behold, everything will be clean for you."

«But according to you, by the mere giving of alms everything is made clean»

Fr. Pedro IGLESIAS Martínez
(Rubí, Barcelona, Spain)

Today, the evangelist shows us Jesus at a banquet: «A Pharisee asked him to have a meal with him» (Lk 11:37). The host must have frowned when he realized his guest could not care less about the hand washing ritual (which was not a precept of Law, but just a tradition from the old rabbis) on top of frowning upon him and his social group. The Pharisee did not hit the right day, and Jesus' behavior, as we would say today, was not “politically correct”.

The Gospels show us that the Lord was basically uninterested in what “people might say” or in what may be considered “politically correct” behavior; we see in the Gospels that Jesus didn’t care much for what people might say or what is politically correct, whether we like it or not. These are not criteria on which Christians should base their decisions. Jesus clearly condemns double morality, which clearly seeks convenience or deception: «So then, you Pharisees, you clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside yourselves you are full of greed and evil. Fools!» (Lk 11:39). God's word, as usual, questions us about customs and habits of our daily life, when we end up converting trivia into “values”, to disguise our sins of arrogance, selfishness and conceit, while attempting to “globalize” morals with political correction in order to avoid being out of tune or being marginalized, and this, irrespective of the price to be paid in terms of the soilure of our soul, as, after all, everybody does the same.

St. Basil used to say, «he who is prudent must be mostly afraid of living pending of others' opinion». If we are witnesses to Christ, we must know that the truth will always shine through. This is our mission amidst these men we share our live with, while trying to keep us clean after the model of man God has revealed to us in Christ. The cleanliness of spirit goes far beyond any social forms and, if we ever have any doubts, let us then remember that blessed are the clean of heart, for they shall see God. Each one must decide what he wants to see for all eternity.

After hearing Jesus preach, one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to his home for a meal.  The Pharisee was surprised to see that Jesus didn’t participate in the before the meal handwashing ritual.  It must have been very obvious to those dining with Jesus that he skipped such an important part of a meal.  It was clearly an intentional move by Jesus to provide a lesson.  Jesus went on to say:

Although you cleanse the outside of the cup and the dish,
inside you are filled with plunder and evil.
You fools!
Did not the maker of the outside also make the inside?
But as to what is within, give alms,
and behold, everything will be clean for you.”

These words really struck me.  Over the past months, I’ve watched others be harmed by the actions of people who seem to have a clean exterior.  These self-proclaimed Christians may be acting so that others perceive them to be upstanding, successful leaders while there is incredible damage to others as a result of the self- serving motives behind their actions.  In addition to Jesus’ lesson, simply giving alms won’t “clean everything” if one chooses to give alms in a pretentious manner.  Almsgiving should be accompanied by humility.  Almsgiving should not benefit some, while harming others.  Jesus teaches us over and over again that we are to care for each other—no matter what.

Take some time to perform an examination of conscience.  Do my actions match up with the outside of my cup, or with the inside of my cup?  Is the inside of my cup as clean as I make the outside?

Today is the Feast of St. Teresa of Avila.  She was a remarkable early leader of the Church.  She reminds us of what our priority should be:

"The surest way to determine whether one possesses the love of God is to see whether he or she loves his or her neighbor. These two loves are never separated. Rest assured, the more you progress in love of neighbor the more your love of God will increase." ~ Teresa of Avila

WHAT IS HAPPENING?

"The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against the irreligious and perverse spirit of men who, in this perversity of theirs, hinder the truth." Romans 1:18

Our society can deteriorate so much that many people "are filled with every kind of wickedness: maliciousness, greed, ill will" (Rm 1:29). We can get to the point that our society is the closest thing to "hell on earth." This extremity of evil is preceded by "disgraceful passions. Their women exchanged natural intercourse for unnatural, and the men gave up natural intercourse with women and burned with lust for one another. Men did shameful things with men" (Rm 1:26-27). This barrage of homosexual sin is in turn preceded by idolatry, worshipping "the creature rather than the Creator" (Rm 1:25). When we practice idolatry, that is, put anything ahead of God, we set the stage for worse sin, particularly homosexual sins. Prior to idolatry, vain reasoning, senseless minds, and just plain foolishness proliferate (Rm 1:21-22). Then the bottom line of this retrogression is the repeated refusal to give God glory and thanks (Rm 1:21).

Using this analysis of cultural breakdown from the first chapter of Romans, we can surmise that although our culture of death is in the latter stages of evil, it can get worse. We can also see how serious homosexual sins are. Furthermore, we can understand where idolatry comes from and where it goes. Finally, we can also see that the beginning of renewing society is to live lives of praise and thanks to God. Learn from Romans.

Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to give me the power to replace the culture of death with a civilization of love and life.
Promise: "But if you give what you have as alms, all will be wiped clean for you." —Lk 11:41
Praise: St. Teresa of Jesus chose religious life because she knew how prone to sin she was. She prayed daily for the coming of the Holy Spirit in her life.

What makes the heart clean and holy?

Is the Lord Jesus welcomed at your table and are you ready to feast at his table? A Pharisee, after hearing Jesus preach, invited him to dinner, no doubt, because he wanted to hear more from this extraordinary man who spoke the word of God as no one else had done before. It was not unusual for a rabbi to give a teaching over dinner. Jesus, however, did something which offended his host. He did not perform the ceremonial washing of hands before beginning the meal. Did Jesus forget or was he deliberately performing a sign to reveal something to his host? Jesus turned the table on his host by chiding him for uncleanness of heart.

What makes the heart clean and holy?
Which is more important to God - clean hands or a clean mind and heart? Jesus chided the Pharisees for harboring evil thoughts that make us unclean spiritually - such as greed, pride, bitterness, envy, arrogance, and the like. Why does he urge them, and us, to give alms? When we give freely and generously to those in need we express love, compassion, kindness, and mercy. And if the heart is full of love and compassion, then there is no room for envy, greed, bitterness, and the like. Do you allow God's love to transform your heart, mind, and actions toward your neighbor?

"Lord Jesus, fill me with your love and increase my thirst for holiness. Cleanse my heart of every evil thought and desire and help me to act kindly and justly and to speak charitably with my neighbor."

Psalm 19:1-4

1 The heavens are telling the glory of God; and the firmament proclaims his handiwork.
2 Day to day pours forth speech, and night to night declares knowledge.
3 There is no speech, nor are there words; their voice is not heard;
4 Yet their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.

Daily Quote from the early church fathers: Acts of mercy are examples of almsgiving, by Augustine of Hippo, 354-430 A.D.

"What our Lord says, 'Give alms, and behold, all things are clean to you,' applies to all useful acts of mercy. It does not apply just to the one who gives food to the hungry, drink to the thirsty, clothing to the naked, hospitality to the wayfarer or refuge to the fugitive. It also applies to one who visits the sick and the prisoner, redeems the captive, bears the burdens of the weak, leads the blind, comforts the sorrowful, heals the sick, shows the erring the right way, gives advice to the perplexed, and does whatever is needful for the needy. Not only does this person give alms, but the person who forgives the trespasser also gives alms as well. He is also a giver of alms who, by blows or other discipline, corrects and restrains those under his command. At the same time he forgives from the heart the sin by which he has been wronged or offended or prays that it be forgiven the offender. Such a person gives alms not only because he forgives and prays but also because he rebukes and administers corrective punishment, since in this he shows mercy... There are many kinds of alms. When we do them, we are helped in receiving forgiveness of our own sins." (excerpt from ENCHIRIDION 19.72)
