여행이 좋을 줄이야....
매년 여행을 떠나기 위해 계획을 하고 예약을 하고 여행날이 다가갈 수록 인터냇을 통해서 여행지에 대한 자료를 찾아다니며 설램에 시간을 보내던 때는 먼 옛날 이야기로 사라지고 올해 따라 이곳저곳 여행지를 보며 시큰퉁하게 되어
집을 떠나 여행을 하는것이 별로 내키지 않았었는데
아니 여행 계획을 세우는 것 조차 별 흥미를 느끼지 못했었는데
이게 왠일 막상 뉴욕행 버스를 타고보니 마음은 날라다니는듯 가볍고 상쾌하다
창밖을 보며 설래는 마음은 어디있다 나왔는지......
생각의 나래는 40여년 전으로 돌아가 그 옛날 뉴욕 생활과 워싱톤과 뉴욕을 오가던 추억의 여행에 날개를 펴며
1970년 9월 7일 뉴욕에 도착하여 일주일여 만에 둥지를 틀었더 뉴저지 엘리자벳 시티의 공장 지대와 다리들을 하이웨이에서 보며 살았던 아파드 황량한 벌판에 자리한 대형 샤핑센터를 차가 없어 가보지도 못하고 지나면서 황홀한 걷모습만 보며 지나 다니던 생각들이 지나가는 풍경에 춤을 춘다.

새벽 5시 20분 ride on #54를 타고 Rockville station에서 union station 역에 도착 6시 25분에 도착 예약은 시간적으로 빡빡하게 하는 것을 막기 위해 7시 30분 차를 예약했지만 6시 30분 출발 버스가 있어 앞당겨 타게 되었다.
뉴욕 33번가와 11번가가 만나는 멘하탄에 도착해 보니 정유소가 아닌 stop and go station이여서 화장실이 있을 것이라는 착각에서 벗어났고 정류소에서 기다리고 있을 택시를 잡아 타고 10부락 떨어진 port.에 갈 예정을 했었지만 택시는 보이지 않았고 46가까지 걸아가면서 택시를 잡을 수 있을 것이라 생각하고 걸음을 옮기다보니 port에 서있는 cruise나 시아에 들어와 올들어 가장 추운 날씨라는 일기 예보를 들은터라 중무장을 한 상태였는데 의외로 견딜만 한 추위라서 부담없이 걸을 수 있었다.
cruise port 에 도착하니 배가 예정 시간에 2시간여 늣게 들어온 관계로 대기실에서 5시간여를 기다리다 배에 들어간 시간이 오후 3시경이 되었는데 많은 사람들이 배 안에 들어가서 점심을 해결할 것으로 생각했었던 계획이 사라졌고 보통 다른 배에서 제공되는 선착장에서 간단한 간식이나 드링크도 제공되지 않았고 돈을 받고 파는 핫도그 벤더만이 있었다.
Nov 28 화요일 San Juan, Puerto Rico
배가 오후 3시에 도착하여 10분이 경과하여 Cruise port에. 나오니 도착한 날이 추수감사절이라 national heritage parks는 열지 않고 또 시내를 무료로 마음껏 타고 내리고 구경할 수 있는free trolley도 운영을 하지 않아서trolley를 타고 손쉽게 구경할 수 있을 것이라는 기대가 무너졌다. 호객들이 여행객들에게 10불에 한시간 city tour를 한다는 소리로 발길을 붙잡았지만 그리 크지 않은 곳이라 map만 구하면 쉽게 찾아 다닐 수 있을 것이라고 생각하였었는데 Information center도 문을 닫아 흔히 얻을 수 있는 map 조차도 힘이 들었다. 물어물어 National park을 찾아 다니다 보니 추수 감사절인데도 쉬지 않고 일하는 사람을 만날 수 있어 map을 얻고 조언을 해 주어 어렵지 않게 돌아볼 수 있었고 old town을 걸어 다니다보니 주지사 관저까지 구경을 할 수 있었고 3시간여 만에 배로 돌아올 수 있었다. 시내는 차를 타고 다니나 걸어다니나 별만 차이가 없을 정도로 길은 일반통행으로 교통체증이 많았다.
Sea Trek 을 하던지 아니면 차를 rent해서 불란서 쪽과 네델란드 쪽을 돌아보리라는 예정을 하였는데
전날 저녁 식사에서 만난 디트로이트에서 온 사람이 아는척을 하면서 st marten에는 운전석이 오른쪽이라고 하고 또한 교통체증이 심하고 더욱주 도로 가운데는 오토바이들이 다닌다는 말을 듣고 몇년전에 영국 버진 아이렌드에 가서 차를 렌트하였을때 운전석이 오른쪽이라 고생한 것을 생각하고 렌트카 하는 것을 포기하고Sea Trek 을 제공하는 여행사를 찾으니 오직 cruise 안에서만 신청할 수 있다고 하여 할 수 없이 4시간에 일인당 40불하는 관공 버스를 타고 구경을 했다. 비치를 경과하는 버스의 비용은 45불이고 4시간 반이었는데 내가 탄 버스 운전사가 좋았던지 비치에서 30분을 쉬게 해 주고 cruise port가 있는 네델란드 수도 St. Philipsburg에서 시작하여 불란서 수도는 St. Marigot을 거쳐 5시간 반동안을 돌아주었다.
이섬에서는 개인 Beach가 없고 모두가 public beach라고 한다. 어디를 가든지 무료로 사용할 수 있다는 것이 마음에 들었다. 막상 버스를 타고 보니 운전석은 왼쪽이어서 다시 한 번 더 rental car를 하지 못한 것이 아쉽다. 불란서쪽은 물가가 비싸고 유흥시설이 없고 네델랜드 쪽으로 카지도등이 놀만한 곳이 많아 사람들이 몰린단다.

St. John NP Trunk Bay 엘 개인적으로 가려고 했었데 물어보며 길을 찾다보면 시간 소비를 하게 되어 돈은 세이브를 하겠지만 St. John national park를 왕복하는 ferry 시간을 맞추어 다녀오기에는 무리인 것 같이 cruise 에서 가는 60불짜리Truk bay snorkel trip을 선택하였다 8시 45분경에 St. thomas에서 떠나 St. John에 도착하니 9시반 버스로 갈아타고 Truk bay에 도착하니 10경이었다. Truk bay는 세계에서 아름답다고 선정된 10대 비치 중에 하나여서 기대를 많이 했었는데… 모래는 깨끗했더 비취색 물이 아름다웠고 약간 타원형으로 아늑하게 자리잡고 있어 파도가 그리 세지 않았다. 또한 그리 크지 않지만 스노크링으로 산호와 열대어들의 노니는 모습을 볼 수 있는 곳이 바로 앞에 있어 쉽게 즐길 수 있다는 것이 좋았다. 개인적으로 온다면 crue bay에서 일인단 6불 왕복 12불의 택시료를 내야하고 national park fee 를 낸단다. 비치는 개인 소유땅이 아닌곳을 빼고는 public으로 누구나 사용할 수 있다다. Virgin Island는 150개 가량이 되고 St. John은 록커펠라가 기증한 섬으로서 2/3의 땅이 National Park로 되어있으며 가을 겨울이 제일 바쁜 곳이고 11월 말이 허리케인이 끝난단다.
크지 않은 스노크링 장소라서 20분만에 끝내고 비치 산책을 하다11시40분에 버스를 타고 선착장에와서 12에 출발하는 배를 타고 돌아오니 1시경이었다.
St. thomas로 돌아와서 cruise port에서 1마일 떨어져 있는 시내를 걸어가기 위해 나섰는데 택시가 일인당 4불이라고 했다. 그리멀지 않은 거리라 그냥 걷기로 했는데 마침 버스 한대가 서면서 사람이 내리고 2불가량을 내는 것같아 운전사에게 얼마냐고 물으니 2불이라기에 탑승을 했는데 옆에 앉아있던 여인이 제게 1불만 내라고 해서 내리면서 1불을 내니 2불을 내라기에 옆에 여자가 1불만 내라 했다고 하니 아무말 안하고 받았다.
15년 여경에 이곳을 온 기억을 더듬어 Old town을 돌아보려고 했는데 아름답던 거리는 찾아볼 수 없었고 상점들은 낙후되어 활기가 넘쳤던 옛날의 모습은 찾아볼 수 없어 실망을 했다. Cruise 선착장도 st.marten보자 적었고 오직 우리가 타고온 Norwegian뿐이 없었다. 그 옛날 이곳을 처음왔었을 때 다시 오고 싶은 곳으로 첫번째로 꼽았었는데…
또 다시 이곳을 온다면 차를 렌트해서 여러 비치를 돌아다니며 스노크링도 하며 하루를 보내면 좋겠다 하는 생각이 들었다.
Dominican은 빈곤 한 나라인데다 samana주위가 개발 되지 않은 상태라고 하여 하루 일정은 찾아 나서는 것에 두려움이 있어 아예 cruise plan을 선택하여 세시간 코스인 rainforest hike to pools & cascades를 선택하였다. 인터냇 상으로 찾아본 사진들이 별로 아름다운 사진이 없었던 관계로 기대되는 코스는 아니지만 아무 것도 하지 않으면 무료할 것 같아 경아는 배 안에서 water sliding을 하고 남겠다고 해서 혼자 출발했다.
. cruise에서 8시에 출발 port에 도착하니 8시 20분 8시 45분경에 출발하여 반은 아스팔트고 반은 닦여지지 않은 도로를 달려 도착한 Pool.
예상은 했지만 너무 한다는 생각이 들정도로 별로 였다. 처음에는 왠 젊은이들이 버스 정차장에 서 있는가 했더니 이들은20분 가량 언덕을 올라가는 길은 비로 인해 진흙길이여서 미끄러지기 쉬워 우리들이 넘어지거나 미끄러질 위험에서 도와 주기 위해 대기 하고 있었던 핼퍼들이었다. 핼퍼들이 부축을 해 주어 도착한 곳에 pool이라는 것이 개울물이 4m정도의 높이에서 떨어져 내리는 사방 4m 정도로 웅덩이를 pool이라고 하고 헬퍼 아이들이 폭포위에서 떨어져 내리며 시범을 보여 주었다 30분 정도 쉬었다가 10분가량 내려와서 버스를 타고 돌아오는 길에 내린곳은 올라오기 전에 화장실에 가라고 내려주었던 곳이었는데 이곳에 여러가지 식물들에 대해 소개를 한다고 걸어다니며 설명을 하고 나서 상품들을 소개했다.
60과 팁 2불을 주고 정작 숲을 걸었던 시간은 30여분 가량 차를 탄 시간은 40분 화가 났다.
내가 선택한 것이 별로 였나? Sight seeing tour 그리고 다는 tour도 별로 였을 것 같은 느낌 이었다.
후기
이번 추수감사절기간 집을 떠나 보고 싶은 생각이 있었던 차에
eastern Caribbean cruise의 8박 9일 가격이 택스까지 합하여 두사람에1160불이라는 좋은 가격이기에 선택한 Norwegian Gem cruise는 2007년에 만들어진 2300명을 태우는 중간 사이즈의 cruise여서 였는지 그동안 별로 힘들지 않았던 crise 여행과는 다르게 이번에는 배 멀미로 고생을 했기 때문에 다시는 중간 사이즈 cruise를 안탈 것이라고 마음을 먹을 정도로 힘들었다. 그리고 다음 배를 탈 때는 왕복 4일 간 배에서 묵는 배는 타지 않을 것이리라. 얼마나 좋은 여행이 아니라고 생각했으면 이번 배에서 다음 cruise예약을 위해 250불을 내면 100불을 크래딧을 준다는 좋은 조건으로 유혹을 했지만 Norwegian cruise는 안타기로 마음 먹었을 정도로 이 배에 대해 않좋 은 느낌을 가지게 되었다.
이 배는 4.5 star cruise 라서 좀 기대를 했었는데 다른 회사의4 star cruise음식이나 서비스는 좋지 않았다. 이 cruise가 가장 중점적으로 다룬 것은 위생에 관한 것이 였지만 그것 또한 허점이 많았다.
유료 식당이 7개로 cruise의 자리를 많이 차지 했고 무료restaurant의 음식은 거의 고정적이 였으며 cruise의 장점인 풍성한 먹을 거리가 있는 Buffet이 빈약하게 차려져 유료 식당으로 유인하도록 했다.
Room 도 다른 cruise에 비해 작았고 방 청소 역시 계으른 탓인지 아니면 손이 모자랐는지 아니면 일하는 사람들의 키가 작아서 였는지 내 눈 높이 위의 선반들은 몇년을 아예 손을 대지 않은듯 보였으며 security box는 작동되지 않은 상태임을 알렸는데도 고쳐지지 않았고 얼음 통과 컵은 얼음을 주문했었음에도 장식용으로 쓰는 것인지 몇번 주문을 해도 되질 않아 아예 얼음통을 업어 놓았는데 그 다음날에는 또다시 얼음이 있는 것 처럼 차려져 있기를 반복해 장식을 해 놓으면서 얼음을 채워주지 않았다.
수영장의 규모는 2300여명의 승객에 비해 빈약했고 스팀 사우나가 하나 있는데 3일간 10분 여 사용했지만 배 안에서 수영복을 입지 않고 8일간 지낸 것은 이 배 뿐이 었다.
배 안에서의 프로그램도 그리 많지 않아 무료하게 느껴졌다. 다만 저녁에 있었던 7시 show는 다른 배에 비해 잘했다. 작년에 탔던 royal cruise는 가장 못한 아마추어 수준의 쇼였다면 이번 배는 기립 박수를 받을 만큼 그 어떤 배 보다 잘했다.
만 8일간 머물으면서 4일은 배 안에서 4일은 섬에 머물면서 비치에서 수영을 하는 것보다는 섬을 돌아다니고 싶은 목적을 가진 나이었지만 오직 St. Thomas에서 갔던 St. John의Truk bay tour가 마음에 들었을 뿐이었다.
이번 뉴욕에서 떠나는 배에 대해서 생각을 해보니 8,9월의 cruise여행은 이번 11월에 뉴욕에서 떠나는 배는 택스가 169불이었고 지난 8월에 Port Canaveral에서 떠나는 배의 택스는 거의 반 값이 89불이었기에. 왕복 76불을 들여 버스를 타고 와서 떠나는 뉴욕보다는 운전을 해서 가더라도 Florida에서 떠나는 배을 타는 것이 좋겠다는 생각이 들었다.

Puerto Rico is 100 miles by 35 miles. Close to 4 million people live on the “Island of Enchantment,” with more than a million in the greater San Juan metropolitan area alone. It is a vibrant, modern, bilingual, multicultural society, one that has been molded by Spanish, African, Indian and U.S. influences.
Both Spanish and English are the official languages, the local currency is the U.S. dollar, and no visas or passports are required to enter Puerto Rico from the United States. Mail is sent through the US Postal Service at the same rates as on the mainland.
Puerto Rico is in the Atlantic Time Zone, but does not observe Daylight Savings Time. The island uses standard U.S. electric code. European appliances require an adapter.
There are no customs duties on articles bought in Puerto Rico and taken to the U.S. mainland. Major credit cards are accepted at most businesses, and ATM's connected to major US and international networks are easy to find.
Business hours are similar to those on the mainland, 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM weekdays. Most stores are open Saturdays, and all of the larger towns have shopping malls that are open evenings and Sundays.
Around the Old San Juan
Narrow cobblestone streets, colorful colonial buildings, centuries-old fortifications overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, combined with tropical breezes help make Old San Juan, legendary.
Wear comfortable shoes and light clothing, grab your camera, and be ready to marvel at the perfect marriage of past and present on the lively streets of Old San Juan. Walking is perhaps the best way to get acquainted with the Old City. If you need a break, hop aboard the free trolleys that make the rounds to and from La Puntilla and Covadonga parking lots at one of the clearly marked stops.
San Juan Bay is the busiest ocean port in the Caribbean, bringing in half of the region's trade and over one million cruise ship visitors a year. Bayside shops carry everything from gold jewelry to island arts and crafts.
La Muralla or city wall, was built to protect the city from enemy attacks. Its construction began in 1634 and its 20 foot thick masonry walls completed by 1782. From the San Juan Gate, the principles and last remaining of five gates into the walled city, you will be able to see Isla de Cabras and a small Spanish fort, Fortin San Juan de la Cruz, across the bay.
Museo de Doña Fela is the original residence of Felisa Rincón de Gautier, the first woman to become Mayor of San Juan. This museum features personal belongings, period memorabilia, and awards granted to this exceptional woman. Open weekdays from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM Tel. (787) 723-1897.
Casa Rosada is a lovely house in front of La Rogativa is Casa Rosada, or Pink House. It was built in 1812 for the Spanish army.
Plazuela de la Rogativa features a small plaza with a bronze sculpture by Lindsay Daen. The work recreates the day, that according to legend, a bishop and his companions helped frighten away British troops during the 1797 attack on the city by carrying torches and chanting. The enemies thought the procession was local troop reinforcements.
Plaza de Hostos is the small square in front of Plaza de la Dársena, near La Casita, is Plaza de Hostos. This square features artisans' displays, snack stands, and the traditional piragüeros, vendors who sell snow cones.
Paseo La Princesa is near Plaza de la Marina and a statue honoring the Puerto Rican immigrant, you will find Paseo La Princesa. It is a promenade lined with trees, pocket parks, sculptures, and benches, and leads to a magnificent fountain with a bronze sculpture by Luis Sanguino depicting the island's cultural roots.
La Princesa is midway through the promenade is La Princesa itself, a former jail and now headquarters of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company. The restored building features a gallery of Puerto Rican art with permanent and visiting exhibitions. Tel. (787) 721-2400.
La Fortaleza was the first fortification built in Old San Juan in 1533 and it is the oldest governor's mansion still in use in the Western Hemisphere. Tel. (787) 721-7000, ext. 2358.
San Juan Cathedral
Built in 1540 and the site where the body of Ponce de Leon is entombed, the the Catedral de San Juan is an authentic and rare New World example of medieval architecture
San Juan National Historic Site
San Juan National Historic Site was established in 1949 and wasn't until 1961 that the United States ARMY transferred the fortifications to the National Park Service.
If arriving by cruise ship, most piers are within walking distance (10-15 minutes). Just walk north, up the hill, past the Plaza Colon to reach Calle Norzagaray. You will see Castillo San Cristóbal from the Plaza Colon and Castillo San Felipe del Morro is a 15 minute walk up Calle Norzagaray from San Cristóbal. The Pan-American pier is 3 miles away. Taxis are available.
Public Transportation
Free trams are available throughout the day and will take you from the cruise ship piers in Old San Juan to both fortifications. Their schedule depends on traffic in the old city, usually a 20-30 minute wait.
Saint Martin (French: Saint-Martin; Dutch: Sint Maarten)
The 37-square-mile island of St. Maarten was first settled by the Arawaks and was discovered by Christopher Columbus on behalf of Spain in 1493. Columbus sighted the island on November 11th, the holy day of St. Martin of Tours, and so named the island after him. For the next 150 years the island was passed between Holland, England, France and Spain.
The old stone forts that guard many of the island's inlets are proof of the island's turbulent past. In 1648 St. Maarten was peacefully divided between Holland and France, and today is the smallest landmass in the world to be shared by two sovereign nations.
Philipsburg St Maarten
Rental cars are the primary mode of transportation for visitors staying on island. If any driving is expected off the major roads (such as to some of the more secluded beaches), a four-wheel drive is recommended. Traffic on the island, however, has become a major problem; long traffic jams between Marigot, Philipsburg and the airport are common. Rate $35 enterprise

Sea Trek St. Maarten is a 2 ½ hour tour excursion that runs several times daily. The tour starts with a 5 minute walk from the gangway to the water taxi pier and a 10 minute boat ride out to our staging area. once on board the Sea Trek dock your guide will give a safety briefing and will answer any questions that you may have. The underwater trek itself takes approximately 20-30 minutes to complete; based on the number of guests participating in that particular tour, 2 separate tours may be made. Each tour will have no more than 10 guests and will have a minimum of 3 Sea Trek staff members with the tour at all times as a safety precaution. If there are 2 groups participating in the tour, while one group is underwater the other guests are offered the opportunity to go for a snorkel while they wait. once both groups have completed the Sea Trek tour there will be an opportunity to buy photos taken of you on the trek before boarding the boat and getting shuttled back to the cruise ship pier or the main land.Helmet diving feeds continuous air through low pressure lines on the surface down to the Sea Trekker under water. The air pressure inside the helmet keeps the water level right around shoulder height and the majority of the time you won’t even get your hair wet. You climb down a ladder from the Sea Trek dock that reaches 20 feet down to the ocean floor. The track, a loop approximately 300 feet long, takes you past both natural and artificial reefs such as a helicopter, a plane, a submarine, King Neptune and 2 canons salvaged from Fort Amsterdam. You’ll be also invited to interact with some of the local sea creatures along the way. once back to the beginning of the track loop you climb the ladder back onto the dock while personally lead both up and down the ladder by a guide or safety diver.Min 8 yrs. and able to walk and climb a ladder. Little Bay Beach
It is the nearest beach to the port, and a very good one. There are no restrictions from the Divi resort management, you can use some of the facilities, including restrooms and showers. Try to get there early or you might be left without umbrella or beach chair if a season is high. The cab ride is 10 min, and there are plenty of them to get you back.The water is incredible: calm, warm, blue-to-green colored. Take a walk around the property and don't miss the fort on the peninsula. The view from there is breathtaking. You can see both Great and Little bays, the port, ships, birds flying high above, clouds... It creates such a nice feeling that makes you forget about anything else. There are benches on all edges of the hill to sit, relax, and watch. Don't pay attention to the management's sign that prohibits going up hill without management's consent. It's just to limit their liability. The beach bar is good, with friendly folks and nice music. Enjoy your day!

Once on St. John there are no designated entrances to Virgin Islands National Park, although two main routes will provide access to many areas. Route 20 (North Shore Road) runs from the ferry dock past the Visitors Center to the most contiguous part of the Park, including most beaches and the campgrounds as well. Large and small tracts of private lands are found within the authorized boundary of the Park.
The Cruz Bay Visitor Center is open daily from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and is just a short walk from the public ferry dock.
Park rangers can help you plan your visit, including hikes, historical tours, snorkeling, cultural craft demonstrations, and evening campground demonstrations.

Park Areas – Three beautiful beaches and a campground are just part of the park facilities. The picnic areas are wheelchair accessible.
o Trunk Bay is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, and has an underwater snorkeling trail. Other facilities include a bathhouse, snack bar, souvenir shop and snorkel gear rentals. Lifeguards are on duty daily. These facilities close at 4:00 PM.
o Cinnamon Bay has a water sports center that rents snorkel gear and windsurfers, and can arrange day sailing, snorkeling and scuba diving lessons. A campground with bare tent sites, prepared sites and cottages is adjacent to the beach. There is also a camp store. Call 340-776-6330 or 800-539-9998 for camping reservations. The campground closes to unregistered guests at 10:00 PM.
o Hawksnest has changing rooms, picnic tables, grills and restrooms. It is the closest beach driving from Cruz Bay. Restroom facilities do not close, but amplified music is not allowed and there is a 10 PM noise curfew.
Things To Do
While Annaberg and Trunk Bay are the most frequently-visited park sites, Virgin Islands National Park’s diverse beaches, coral reefs, historic ruins, and hiking trails provide endless hours of exploration and enjoyment, as well as inspiration and opportunities for solitude and reflection. Visitors enjoy a variety of activities on the land and in the water, including swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving; sailing, kayaking and windsurfing; and camping, hiking and bird watching. Visitors can enjoy the crystal blue waters on a charter day-sail or boat snorkeling tour which are offered by private operators and can be booked in Cruz Bay and Coral Bay. Some visitors explore the park on their own, while others prefer a two-hour safari bus island tour with a private tour guide. To learn more about the island and its diverse plants, animals and people attend a Park program.
