Mal 3:1-4

Thus says the Lord God:

Lo, I am sending my messenger

to prepare the way before me;

And suddenly there will come to the temple

the LORD whom you seek,

And the messenger of the covenant whom you desire.

Yes, he is coming, says the LORD of hosts.

But who will endure the day of his coming?

And who can stand when he appears?

For he is like the refiner's fire,

or like the fuller's lye.

He will sit refining and purifying silver,

and he will purify the sons of Levi,

Refining them like gold or like silver

that they may offer due sacrifice to the LORD.

Then the sacrifice of Judah and Jerusalem

will please the LORD,

as in the days of old, as in years gone by.

Responsorial Psalm

Ps 24:7, 8, 9, 10

R. (8) Who is this king of glory? It is the Lord!

Lift up, O gates, your lintels;

reach up, you ancient portals,

that the king of glory may come in!

R. Who is this king of glory? It is the Lord!

Who is this king of glory?

The LORD, strong and mighty,

the LORD, mighty in battle.

R. Who is this king of glory? It is the Lord!

Lift up, O gates, your lintels;

reach up, you ancient portals,

that the king of glory may come in!

R. Who is this king of glory? It is the Lord!

Who is this king of glory?

The LORD of hosts; he is the king of glory.

R. Who is this king of glory? It is the Lord!

Heb 2:14-18

Since the children share in blood and flesh,

Jesus likewise shared in them,

that through death he might destroy the one

who has the power of death, that is, the Devil,

and free those who through fear of death

had been subject to slavery all their life.

Surely he did not help angels

but rather the descendants of Abraham;

therefore, he had to become like his brothers and sisters

in every way,

that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest before God

to expiate the sins of the people.

Because he himself was tested through what he suffered

he is able to help those who are being tested.

Gospel

Lk 2:22-40 Or Lk 2:22-32

When the days were completed for their purification

according to the law of Moses,

Mary and Joseph took Jesus up to Jerusalem

to present him to the Lord,

just as it is written in the law of the Lord,

Every male that opens the womb shall be consecrated to the Lord,

and to offer the sacrifice of

a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons,

in accordance with the dictate in the law of the Lord.

Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon.

This man was righteous and devout,

awaiting the consolation of Israel,

and the Holy Spirit was upon him.

It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit

that he should not see death

before he had seen the Christ of the Lord.

He came in the Spirit into the temple;

and when the parents brought in the child Jesus

to perform the custom of the law in regard to him,

he took him into his arms and blessed God, saying:

"Now, Master, you may let your servant go

in peace, according to your word,

for my eyes have seen your salvation,

which you prepared in the sight of all the peoples:

a light for revelation to the Gentiles,

and glory for your people Israel."

The child's father and mother were amazed at what was said about him;

and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother,

"Behold, this child is destined

for the fall and rise of many in Israel,

and to be a sign that will be contradicted

Band you yourself a sword will pierceB

so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed."

There was also a prophetess, Anna,

the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher.

She was advanced in years,

having lived seven years with her husband after her marriage,

and then as a widow until she was eighty-four.

She never left the temple,

but worshiped night and day with fasting and prayer.

And coming forward at that very time,

she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child

to all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem.

When they had fulfilled all the prescriptions

of the law of the Lord,

they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth.

The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom;

and the favor of God was upon him.

Even though I consider myself prayerful and mindful, I sometimes find it difficult to recognize Jesus in the many ways he shows up and is presented to me. I especially find it difficult to recognize Jesus in front of me when I am so deep in the hurts of life that hope seems far away. I also find it difficult to recognize Jesus when the world around me seems unfair, unjust, and unstable. Sometimes I am even surprised that in my quest for success, acknowledgment, love, peace of mind, and happiness, I am ultimately seeking, desiring, and waiting for Jesus to show up. I desire Jesus to be visible and present. I desire to see him clearly, know him, and rest in the knowledge that his presence means freedom, joy, and salvation.

Neither Simeon nor Anna were in an easy place in their life, yet they were so open to the Spirit of God that they could see clearly. They could see Jesus the Savior in the baby presented by his parents, Mary and Joseph. Simeon and Anna recognized him immediately. They saw him and knew he was the savior they had been waiting for.

Presented to us today is Jesus, whom we ultimately seek and desire. However, do we recognize him? It is easy to recognize Jesus when the communion host is presented and offered to us for spiritual nourishment. We receive Jesus with gladness at that moment because we had waited and longed for him before we walked into Church. It is easy to recognize Jesus on the cross because we remember he loved us enough to die for us. It is also easy to recognize Jesus in a smile we receive from another, a hug, or an act of kindness. Then suddenly, Jesus comes to us in a different way, a way that requires us to see through God's eyes, a way that requires us to trust the Spirit. How well do we do then? How clearly can we see?

I would like to say that I recognize Jesus in the face of everyone I meet, including those I find challenging to be around. I would like to say that I recognize Jesus in the moments when I am disappointed, heartbroken, angry, ill, rejected, uncertain, or sad. I would like to say that I could identify Jesus as soon as he comes into the room as a newborn, the homeless, or different in any way. I would like to say I recognize Jesus immediately without a doubt, but that would be a lie. I do try, but I fail most of the time.

Maybe it is not enough to just recognize Jesus or the presence of God. Maybe we also have to bear Christ as the word of God so that we may see clearly and also help others recognize Jesus when he is presented to them. The one whom we seek and the message we long to hear are presented to us today. Do we recognize him? Can we receive him? Are we ready to bear him? Are we ready to pay the price of discipleship?

Merciful and loving God, you are here. Help us see your face and grant us the grace to rejoice in your presence amongst us.

DIE AND SHINE

“For my eyes have witnessed Your saving deed displayed for all the peoples to see: A revealing Light to the Gentiles.” —Luke 2:30-32

Today, throughout the world, the Church proclaims that Jesus is the Light to the nations and the Glory of Israel (Lk 2:32). However, “the Light came into the world, but men loved darkness rather than Light because their deeds were wicked” (Jn 3:19). Thus, Jesus was and is a “sign of contradiction” for “the downfall and the rise of many in Israel” (see Lk 2:34). The message of today’s feast day, the Presentation of Jesus, is highly controversial.

Jesus has promised to confirm the proclamation of the Gospel, including today’s Gospel passage, with signs and wonders (Mk 16:20). Tomorrow, we will use the candles which are blessed today. Through the blessing of throats tomorrow at the liturgy of St. Blaise, many will be healed and freed from the influence of the evil one. This will encourage all of us to accept the message of today’s feast — to accept Jesus as the Light of the world and the Light of our life (see Jn 8:12; cf Jn 1:9).

If we accept Jesus as our Light, we will become lights ourselves (Mt 5:14). We will be like candles, giving forth light by being consumed. Yet we are hesitant to lose our life in order to give our light. By the graces of today and tomorrow, die and shine.

Prayer: Father, may darkness not overcome my light (see Jn 1:5).

Promise: “He is like the refiner’s fire, or like the fuller’s lye. He will sit refining and purifying.” —Mal 3:2-3

Praise: Praise Jesus, God Incarnate, Who was made subject to the law for our sakes.

What kind of authority and power does the Lord want you to exercise on his behalf? Jesus gave his apostles both the power and the authority to speak and to act in his name. He commanded them to do the works which he did - to heal the sick. to cast out evil spirits, and to speak the word of God - the good news of the gospel which they received from Jesus. When Jesus spoke of power and authority he did something unheard of. He wedded power and authority with self-sacrificing love and humility. The "world" and the "flesh" seek power for selfish gain. Jesus teaches us to use it for the good of our neighbor.

The Lord Jesus wants to work in and through each of us for his glory

Why does Jesus tell the apostles to "travel light" with little or no provision? "Poverty of spirit" frees us from greed and preoccupation with our possessions and makes ample room for God's provision. The Lord wants his disciples to be dependent on him and not on themselves. He wills to work in and through each of us for his glory. Are you ready to use the spiritual authority and power which God wishes you to exercise on his behalf? The Lord entrusts us with his gifts and talents. Are you eager to place yourself at his service, to do whatever he bids you, and to witness his truth and saving power to whomever he sends you?

Lord Jesus, make me a channel of your healing power and merciful love that others may find abundant life and freedom in you. Free me from all other attachments that I may joyfully pursue the treasure of your heavenly kingdom. May I witness the joy of the Gospel both in word and deed.

Psalm 48:2-11

2 Beautiful in elevation, is the joy of all the earth, Mount Zion, in the far north, the city of the great King.

3 Within her citadels God has shown himself a sure defense.

4 For behold, the kings assembled, they came on together.

5 As soon as they saw it, they were astounded, they were in panic, they took to flight;

6 trembling took hold of them there, anguish as of a woman in travail.

7 By the east wind you did shatter the ships of Tarshish.

8 As we have heard, so have we seen in the city of the LORD of hosts, in the city of our God, which God establishes for ever. [Selah]

9 We have thought on your steadfast love, O God, in the midst of your temple.

10 As your name, O God, so your praise reaches to the ends of the earth. Your right hand is filled with victory;

11 let Mount Zion be glad! Let the daughters of Judah rejoice because of your judgments!

Daily Quote from the Early Church Fathers: Jesus gives them power to heal and cast out evil spirits, by Cyril of Alexandria (376-444 AD)

"The grace bestowed upon the holy apostles is worthy of all admiration. But the bountifulness of the Giver surpasses all praise and admiration. He gives them, as I said, his own glory. They receive authority over the evil spirits. They reduce to nothing the pride of the devil that was so highly exalted and arrogant. They render ineffectual the demon's wickedness. By the might and efficacy of the Holy Spirit, burning them as if they were on fire, they make the devil come forth with groans and weeping from those whom he had possessed... "He glorified his disciples, therefore, by giving them authority and power over the evil spirits and over sicknesses. Did he honor them without reason and make them famous without any logical cause? How can this be true? It was necessary, most necessary, that they should be able to work miracles, having been publicly appointed ministers of sacred proclamations. By means of their works, they then could convince men that they were the ministers of God and mediators of all beneath the heaven. The apostles then could invite them all to reconciliation and justification by faith and point out the way of salvation and of life that is this justification." (excerpt from COMMENTARY ON LUKE, HOMILY 47)
