제1독서
<나는 네 후손과 그 여자의 후손 사이에 적개심을 일으키리라.>
창세기. 3,9-15.20
사람이 나무 열매를 먹은 뒤, 주 하느님께서 그를 9 부르시며,
“너 어디 있느냐?” 하고 물으셨다.
10 그가 대답하였다.
“동산에서 당신의 소리를 듣고 제가 알몸이기 때문에 두려워 숨었습니다.”
11 그분께서 “네가 알몸이라고 누가 일러 주더냐?
내가 너에게 따 먹지 말라고 명령한 그 나무 열매를
네가 따 먹었느냐?” 하고 물으시자,
12 사람이 대답하였다. “당신께서 저와 함께 살라고 주신 여자가
그 나무 열매를 저에게 주기에 제가 먹었습니다.”
13 주 하느님께서 여자에게 “너는 어찌하여 이런 일을 저질렀느냐?” 하고 물으시자,
여자가 대답하였다.
“뱀이 저를 꾀어서 제가 따 먹었습니다.”
14 주 하느님께서 뱀에게 말씀하셨다. “네가 이런 일을 저질렀으니
너는 모든 집짐승과 들짐승 가운데에서 저주를 받아
네가 사는 동안 줄곧 배로 기어 다니며 먼지를 먹으리라.
15 나는 너와 그 여자 사이에,
네 후손과 그 여자의 후손 사이에 적개심을 일으키리니
여자의 후손은 너의 머리에 상처를 입히고
너는 그의 발꿈치에 상처를 입히리라.”
20 사람은 자기 아내의 이름을 하와라 하였다.
그가 살아 있는 모든 것의 어머니가 되었기 때문이다.

가브리엘 천사를 갈릴래아 지방 나자렛이라는 고을로 보내시어,
27 다윗 집안의 요셉이라는 사람과 약혼한 처녀를 찾아가게 하셨다.
그 처녀의 이름은 마리아였다.
28 천사가 마리아의 집으로 들어가 말하였다.
“은총이 가득한 이여, 기뻐하여라. 주님께서 너와 함께 계시다.”
29 이 말에 마리아는 몹시 놀랐다.
그리고 이 인사말이 무슨 뜻인가 하고 곰곰이 생각하였다.
30 천사가 다시 마리아에게 말하였다.
“두려워하지 마라, 마리아야. 너는 하느님의 총애를 받았다.
31 보라, 이제 네가 잉태하여 아들을 낳을 터이니 그 이름을 예수라 하여라.
32 그분께서는 큰 인물이 되시고 지극히 높으신 분의 아드님이라 불리실 것이다.
주 하느님께서 그분의 조상 다윗의 왕좌를 그분께 주시어,
33 그분께서 야곱 집안을 영원히 다스리시리니
그분의 나라는 끝이 없을 것이다.”
34 마리아가 천사에게, “저는 남자를 알지 못하는데,
어떻게 그런 일이 있을 수 있겠습니까?” 하고 말하자,
35 천사가 마리아에게 대답하였다.
“성령께서 너에게 내려오시고 지극히 높으신 분의 힘이 너를 덮을 것이다.
그러므로 태어날 아기는 거룩하신 분, 하느님의 아드님이라고 불릴 것이다.
36 네 친척 엘리사벳을 보아라. 그 늙은 나이에도 아들을 잉태하였다.
아이를 못낳는 여자라고 불리던 그가 임신한 지 여섯 달이 되었다.
37 하느님께는 불가능한 일이 없다.”
38 마리아가 말하였다.
“보십시오, 저는 주님의 종입니다.
말씀하신 대로 저에게 이루어지기를 바랍니다.”
그러자 천사는 마리아에게서 떠나갔다.

After the man, Adam, had eaten of the tree,
the LORD God called to the man and asked him, “Where are you?”
He answered, “I heard you in the garden;
but I was afraid, because I was naked,
so I hid myself.”
Then he asked, “Who told you that you were naked?
You have eaten, then,
from the tree of which I had forbidden you to eat!”
The man replied, “The woman whom you put here with me
she gave me fruit from the tree, and so I ate it.”
The LORD God then asked the woman,
“Why did you do such a thing?”
The woman answered, “The serpent tricked me into it, so I ate it.”
Then the LORD God said to the serpent:
“Because you have done this, you shall be banned
from all the animals
and from all the wild creatures;
on your belly shall you crawl,
and dirt shall you eat
all the days of your life.
I will put enmity between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and hers;
he will strike at your head,
while you strike at his heel.”
The man called his wife Eve,
because she became the mother of all the living.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
who has blessed us in Christ
with every spiritual blessing in the heavens,

in accord with the favor of his will,
for the praise of the glory of his grace

Gospel
The angel Gabriel was sent from God
to a town of Galilee called Nazareth,
to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph,

“Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you.”
But she was greatly troubled at what was said
and pondered what sort of greeting this might be.
Then the angel said to her,
“Do not be afraid, Mary,
for you have found favor with God.
Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son,
and you shall name him Jesus.
He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High,
and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father,
and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever,
and of his Kingdom there will be no end.”
But Mary said to the angel,
“How can this be,
since I have no relations with a man?”
And the angel said to her in reply,
“The Holy Spirit will come upon you,
and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.
Therefore the child to be born
will be called holy, the Son of God.
And behold, Elizabeth, your relative,
has also conceived a son in her old age,
and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren;
for nothing will be impossible for God.”
Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.
May it be done to me according to your word.”

Today we celebrate the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The teaching states that “in the first instance of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege granted by Almighty God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the human race, was preserved free from all stain of original sin….” This doctrine applies to Mary but is primarily about the grace of God. Jesus has not even been born to her yet, but it is through his merits that she is preserved from original sin. Mary owes everything to her son, the Savior of the human race, including herself.
In the Genesis reading the serpent is told that God will put enmity between him and “the woman.” Her offspring will strike at his head while the serpent strikes at his heel. The earliest Christians understood her offspring to be a reference to Jesus. The ancient serpent will strike at him, but her offspring will crush the serpent’s head. Mel Gibson’s Passion of the Christ highlights this during the scene in the Garden of Gethsemane before Jesus is arrested. A serpent is crawling on the ground and Jesus stomps on his head. I also find Jesus’ reference to his mother interesting. On many occasions he simply calls her “woman.” I don’t think he’s being disrespectful. He’s using the language of Genesis. She is “the woman.” She is the one whose offspring will destroy the work of the ancient serpent. Eve became “the mother of all the living.” The new Eve is the Mother of God.

The same grace that preserved Mary from original sin also saves us. St. Paul calls us blessed, chosen, destined for adoption, and all because of God’s love for us from before the foundation of the world. It was God’s will that Mary be full of grace; it is his will that we receive his favor. He grants us his grace so that we become holy and without blemish. In doing this in us we “exist for the praise of his glory.”
When the Archangel Gabriel appeared to Mary he refers to her as “full of grace.” Although Origen said that he had not found this word anywhere else in Scripture, it is used once more in Ephesians 1:6, today’s second reading. Mary is highly favored by God and will be the bearer of the Son of God. St. Paul says that we, too, are highly favored by God. God granted his grace to the virgin, and he grants it to us.
God is love. Flowing from his love is his grace and mercy. Mary received his grace from the moment of her conception. We receive that grace as adopted children of God. Today we celebrate the Blessed Virgin. Let us also celebrate that grace that was poured out upon us when our Father brought us into his kingdom. It is a kingdom of grace.
Be blessed today, brothers and sisters. Mary and her children are full of grace.

IMMACULATELY RETRIEVED
“God chose us in Him before the world began, to be holy and blameless.” —Ephesians 1:4
We must be made “perfect in holiness” and “irreproachable at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Thes 5:23). The Lord is returning to find “a glorious Church, holy and immaculate, without stain or wrinkle or anything of that sort” (Eph 5:27). If we are to see the Lord face to face in heaven (Heb 12:14), we must become immaculate and holy in every aspect of our conduct (1 Pt 1:15).
We become holy and immaculate by being baptized into Christ and receiving a new nature. When we sin after receiving a new life in Christ, we can become immaculately retrieved by repenting of our sins, confessing them, and accepting God’s forgiveness. Through a life in Christ of resisting temptations, repenting of sins, and being purified, we become immaculate. If we have totally given our lives to Jesus but have not become immaculate by the time we die, we will be made immaculate in purgatory after death. If we are to see the Lord in heaven, we must be made immaculate by His grace (Heb 12:14).
Today’s solemn feast day, the Immaculate Conception of Mary, shows us both the necessity and the hope of becoming immaculate. The Lord made Mary immaculate from her conception. This encourages us to believe that He will make us immaculate after our conceptions, throughout our lives, and before or, if necessary, after our deaths.
“O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you.”
Prayer: Father, “thoroughly wash me from my guilt and of my sin cleanse me” (Ps 51:4).
Promise: “I am the servant of the Lord. Let it be done to me as you say.” —Luke 1:38
Praise: “You alone and Your Mother are more beautiful than any others; for there is no blemish in You, nor any stains upon Your Mother” (The Nisibene Hymns, St. Ephrem, 370 AD).

Who is the greatest in the kingdom of God? Jesus praised John the Baptist as the greatest person born. Who can top that as a compliment? But in the same breath Jesus says that the least in the kingdom of God is even greater than John! That sounds like a contradiction, right? Unless you understand that what Jesus was about to accomplish for our sake would supersede all that the prophets had done and foreseen.
"Your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel"
The prophet Isaiah proclaimed to the forsaken and dispersed people of Israel some 700 years before the birth of Christ that "your Redeemer - the Holy One of Israel" would come to restore his people and to make all things new (Isaiah 41:14ff). When the Messiah and Redeemer of Israel did appear John the Baptist announced his arrival. He fulfilled the essential task of all the prophets - to be fingers pointing to Jesus Christ, God's Anointed Son and Messiah. John proclaimed Jesus' mission at the Jordan River when he exclaimed, "Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world" (John 1:29). John saw from a distance what Jesus would accomplish through his death on the cross - our redemption from bondage to sin and death and our adoption as sons and daughters of God and citizens of the kingdom of heaven.
The spirit of Elijah is sent in advance through John's words
John the Baptist bridges the Old and New Testaments. He is the last of the Old Testament prophets who point the way to the Messiah. He is the first of the New Testament witnesses and martyrs. He is the herald who prepares the way for Jesus the Messiah. Jesus confirms that John has fulfilled the promise that Elijah would return to herald the coming of the Messiah (Malachi 4:5). Jesus declares that John is nothing less that the great herald whose privilege it was to announce the coming of the Redeemer - the Holy One of Israel.
Jesus equates the coming of the kingdom of heaven with violence (Matthew 11:12). John himself suffered violence for announcing that the kingdom of God was near. He was thrown into prison and then beheaded. Since John's martyrdom to the present times the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence and persecution at the hands of violent men. The blood of the martyrs throughout the ages bear witness to this fact. The martyrs witness to the truth - the truth and love of Jesus Christ who shed his blood to redeem us from slavery to sin and Satan and the fear of death. The Lord Jesus gives us the power of his Holy Spirit to overcome fear with faith, despair with hope, and every form of hatred, violence, jealousy, and prejudice with love and charity towards all - even those who seek to destroy and kill.
We proclaim the joy of the Gospel of Christ even in the midst of suffering and violence
God may call some of us to be martyrs for our faith in Jesus Christ. But for most of us our call is to be dry martyrs who bear testimony to the joy of the Gospel in the midst of daily challenges, contradictions, temptations and adversities which come our way as we follow the Lord Jesus. What attracts others to the Gospel of Jesus Christ? When they see Christians loving their enemies, being joyful in suffering, patient in adversity, pardoning injuries, and showing comfort and compassion to the hopeless and the helpless. Jesus tells us that we do not need to fear our adversaries. He will fill us with the power of his Holy Spirit and give us sufficient grace, strength, and wisdom to face any trial and to answer any challenge to our faith. Are you eager to witness to the joy and freedom of the Gospel?
Lord Jesus, by your cross you have redeemed the world. Fill me with joy and confidence and make me a bold witness of your saving truth that others may know the joy and freedom of the Gospel of your kingdom of peace and righteousness.
Psalm 145:1, 9-13
1 I will extol you, my God and King, and bless your name for ever and ever.
9 The Lord is good to all, and his compassion is over all that he has made
10 All your works shall give thanks to you, O LORD, and all your saints shall bless you!

"What violence (Matthew 11:12)? People did not believe in John the Baptist. The works of Christ were held to be of no importance. His torment on the cross was a stumbling block. 'Until now' prophecy has been dormant. But now the law is fulfilled. Every prediction is finished. The spirit of Elijah is sent in advance through John's words. Christ is proclaimed to some and acknowledged by others. He is born for some and loved by others. The violent irony is that his own people rejected him, while strangers accepted him. His own people speak ill of him, while his enemies embrace him. The act of adoption offers an inheritance, while the family rejects it. Sons refuse to accept their father's last will, while the slaves of the household receive it. This is what is meant by the phrase 'the kingdom of heaven suffers violence' (Matthew 11:12). Earlier expectations are being torn apart. The glory that was pledged to Israel by the patriarchs, which was announced by the prophets and which was offered by Christ, is now being seized and carried off by the Gentiles, through their faith." Thursday - Second Week of Advent
The Lord then called to the man and asked him, “Where are you?”Adam answered, “I heard you in the garden but I was afraid, because I was naked, so I hid myself.” Then God asked, “Who told you that you were naked? You have eaten, then from the tree of which I had forbidden you to eat.”(Gn 3:15,20)
Adam and Eve were so close to being correct that it’s a shame they got off track. They wanted to be like God.That’s what the Book of Genesis tells us.
So far, so good.
The trouble is, perhaps they thought to be “like God’ meant to be independent, free to do whatever they wished.
But God is a God of communion, not of independence or isolation. A God who goes outward, not inward. A God, above all, of compassion.
This is very different from doing whatever I want to do, or to jump through the hoops of an impersonal system of moral rules. I have been made in the image of God. I am called to live up to who I am.
Adam and Eve’s ambition is commendable: to try to be like God let that be my guide, always to act towards others as God does.
Messianic prophecies
The Hebrew word for prophet is nabi, which is connected with the root meaning “to call, to proclaim.” This describes the essence of prophecy in the Israel of Old Testament times.
The Prophet is the bearer and interpreter of the Word of God. The prophet’s mission is to communicate God’s will to those of his own time but also, standing beyond time, to look toward a future age. The prophetic message may be veiled in mystery until it is fulfilled, as in the case of the messianic prophecies.
Throughout Israel’s history, the faith of the people of God sustained a great hope that they would, with God’s help, survive perial and win final salvation, enjoying happiness greater than they have ever known.
Throughout the Old Testament, prophets proclaim that the Messiah, God’s snointed one, will rule the earth:
☆ The prophet Nathan(2Sm 7) says the Messiah will be from King David’s lineage.
☆ The prophets Isaiah (Is 11:1) and Jeremiah (Jer 23: 1 and 33: 15) proclaim future light and salvation for those who are poor, left behind, and in darkness.
☆ Titles of nobility, honor, and the Spirit of God will rest on the Messiah (Is 9:5, 11:1-5).
☆ Isaiah 7: 14 may be most familiar: “The young woman, pregnant and about to bear a son, shall name him Emmanuel.”
