Reading 1
Thus says the LORD:
Woe to Assyria! My rod in anger,
my staff in wrath.
Against an impious nation I send him,
and against a people under my wrath I order him
To seize plunder, carry off loot,
and tread them down like the mud of the streets.
But this is not what he intends,
nor does he have this in mind;
Rather, it is in his heart to destroy,
to make an end of nations not a few.
For he says:
"By my own power I have done it,
and by my wisdom, for I am shrewd.
I have moved the boundaries of peoples,
their treasures I have pillaged,
and, like a giant, I have put down the enthroned.
My hand has seized like a nest
the riches of nations;
As one takes eggs left alone,
so I took in all the earth;
No one fluttered a wing,
or opened a mouth, or chirped!"
Will the axe boast against him who hews with it?
Will the saw exalt itself above him who wields it?
As if a rod could sway him who lifts it,
or a staff him who is not wood!
Therefore the Lord, the LORD of hosts,
will send among his fat ones leanness,
And instead of his glory there will be kindling
like the kindling of fire.
R. (14a)
The Lord will not abandon his people.
Your people, O LORD, they trample down,
your inheritance they afflict.
Widow and stranger they slay,
the fatherless they murder.
R. The Lord will not abandon his people.
And they say, "The LORD sees not;
the God of Jacob perceives not."
Understand, you senseless ones among the people;
and, you fools, when will you be wise?
R. The Lord will not abandon his people.
Shall he who shaped the ear not hear?
or he who formed the eye not see?
Shall he who instructs nations not chastise,
he who teaches men knowledge?
R. The Lord will not abandon his people.
For the LORD will not cast off his people,
nor abandon his inheritance;
But judgment shall again be with justice,
and all the upright of heart shall follow it.
R. The Lord will not abandon his people.
At that time Jesus exclaimed:
"I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth,
for although you have hidden these things
from the wise and the learned
you have revealed them to the childlike.
Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will.
All things have been handed over to me by my Father.
No one knows the Son except the Father,
and no one knows the Father except the Son
and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him."

As I read today’s scripture, the 1st reading seems somewhat contradictory– it was revealing that the Assyrians were used as a tool against an impious nation . . . and against a people under my wrath. Yet, there is clearly a concern with the outcome of this and the arrogance of the Assyrians as they boasted . . . By my own power I have done it, and by my wisdom, for I am shrewd. I have moved the boundaries of peoples, their treasures I have pillaged . . . . While I will willingly admit that I do not fully understand these passages, my take-away is that God’s actions and interventions are not always direct. Rather many times there are messengers or interveners in our lives who are “sent” by God. It appears that these messengers can provide welcome insight or gifts or, as seen with the Assyrians, deliver not so positive experiences.
What resonated most with me in today’s readings, however, is the responsorial psalm response: The Lord will not abandon His people. This concept of the Lord always being there is something that has been ingrained in me since childhood. I must have heard it in these words or some variation at least a thousand times growing up. I am thankful for having heard this and truly felt it so many times. While there are times when the presence of God/Jesus/Holy spirit are truly palpable and provide immense comfort, more often I feel the presence and reality of God in the sounds and sights and those around me. Not unlike the messengers in the Old Testament scripture above, I am blessed to experience many interveners. These are the people who see you feeling down and reach out with a word, a touch, a hug that let’s you know that you are not alone. Times when I feel soul weary – I feel the Divine presence in the flowers, rainbows and, no surprise to anyone, music.
I am always amazed at the timing of these experiences – there is no way that I can imagine that any of this is coincidental. The Divine Plan of my live is certainly unknown to me, yet I know without a doubt that I will never be alone. There is no way that I will be abandoned. I think about my own children and how I (with my human shortcomings) would never turn my back on them – I know that my Father will never leave me, no matter what my behavior or thoughts. A lyric that has touched my heart is: Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders. What a soul-filling concept to keep echoing in my head!!
I don’t remember the source of this, but it has been part of my email signature for years and says it all:
Happy moments, PRAISE GOD
Difficult moments, SEEK GOD
Quiet moments, WORSHIP GOD
Painful moments, TRUST GOD
Every moment, THANK GOD
There are so many beautiful songs to acknowledge that we never walk alone. This is a new favorite of mine: Another in the Fire

MEET MY FATHER
“No one knows the Son but the Father, and no one knows the Father but the Son — and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal Him.” —Matthew 11:27
Jesus came to reveal the Father to all people on this earth. He even taught us to pray first of all, “Father” (Mt 6:9). Jesus reveals the Father to anyone He wishes (Mt 11:27). Is there anyone to whom Jesus does not wish to reveal the Father? Since Jesus wants to reveal the Father to us, it obviously takes a hard heart and a closed mind to shut out Jesus’ revelation of the Father.
Jesus didn’t try to reveal the Father to Herod (Lk 23:9), which indicates that Herod had completely closed his heart and mind to God. However, He did attempt to reveal the Father to the Sanhedrin as they tried and condemned Him (Lk 22:69). He also tried to reveal the Father to Pharisees, Sadducees, scribes, and elders at meals and in various situations (Mt 19:4; 21:31, 37; Lk 15:3ff, 22; 20:37). Since Jesus wanted so badly to reveal His Father to them, it’s understandable that He was grieved when they had closed their minds against Him (Mk 3:5).
Constantly strive to become like little children before the Lord (Mt 18:3). Beg God for an innocent heart to guard against the temptation to harden our hearts to the point that we close ourselves to Jesus’ revelation of the Father. Study the Scriptures regularly, even daily. “Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 133) and of His revelation of the Father. “Oh, that today you would hear His voice: harden not your hearts” (Ps 95:7).
Prayer: Father, “hallowed be Your name” (Mt 6:9).
Promise: “The Lord will not cast off His people.” —Ps 94:14
Praise: St. Henry was a ruler of an empire who lived a life of unquestioned personal holiness. He let his light “shine before men so that they” could “see goodness in (his) acts and give praise to” God (Mt 5:16).

Do you want to know the mind and thoughts of God? Jesus thanks the Father in heaven for revealing to his disciples the wisdom and knowledge of God. What does Jesus' prayer tell us about God and about ourselves? First, it tells us that God is both Father and Lord of earth as well as heaven. He is both Creator and Author of all that he has made, the first origin of everything and transcendent authority, and at the same time he shows loving care and goodness toward all his children. All fatherhood and motherhood is derived from him (Ephesians 3:14-15).
Pride and inordinate love of self
Jesus' prayer also contains a warning that pride can keep us from the love and knowledge of God. What makes us ignorant and blind to the things of God? Certainly intellectual pride, coldness of heart, and stubbornness of will shut out God and his kingdom of peace, joy, and righteousness. Pride is the root of all vice and the strongest influence propelling us to sin. It first vanquishes the heart, making it cold and indifferent towards God. It also closes the mind to God's truth and wisdom for our lives. What is pride? It is the inordinate love of oneself at the expense of others and the exaggerated estimation of one's own learning and importance.
Simplicity of heart
Jesus contrasts intellectual pride with child-like simplicity and humility. The simple of heart are like "infants" in the sense that they see purely without pretense and acknowledge their dependence and trust in the one who is greater, wiser, and more trustworthy. They seek one thing - the "summum bonum" or "greatest good," who is God himself. Simplicity of heart is wedded with humility, the queen of virtues, because humility inclines the heart towards grace and truth. Just as pride is the root of every sin and evil, so humility is the only soil in which the grace of God can take root. It alone takes the right attitude before God and allows him, as God, to do all. God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble (Proverbs 3:34, James 4:6). Only the humble in heart can receive true wisdom and understanding of God and his ways. Do you submit to God's word with simple trust and humility?
Jesus reveals the Father to us
Jesus makes a claim which no one would have dared to make - he is the perfect revelation of God. One of the greatest truths of the Christian faith is that we can know the living God. Our knowledge of God is not simply limited to knowing something about God, but we can know God personally. The essence of Christianity, and what makes it distinct from Judaism and other religions, is the knowledge of God as our Father. Jesus makes it possible for each of us to personally know God as our Father. To see Jesus is to see what God is like.
In Jesus we see the perfect love of God - a God who cares intensely and who yearns over men and women, loving them to the point of laying down his life for them upon the Cross. Jesus is the perfect revelation of God - a God who loves us completely, unconditionally, and perfectly. Jesus also promises that God the Father will hear our prayers when we pray in his name. That is why Jesus taught his followers to pray with confidence, Our Father who art in heaven ..give us this day our daily bread. Do you pray to your Father in heaven with joy and confidence in his love and care for you?
Lord Jesus, give me the child-like simplicity and purity of faith to gaze upon your face with joy and confidence in your all-merciful love. Remove every doubt, fear, and proud thought which would hinder me from receiving your word with trust and humble submission.
Psalm 103:1-8
1 Bless the LORD, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless his holy name!
2 Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits,
3 who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases,
4 who redeems your life from the Pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,
5 who satisfies you with good as long as you live so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's.
6 The LORD works vindication and justice for all who are oppressed.
7 He made known his ways to Moses, his acts to the people of Israel.
8 The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
Daily Quote from the Early Church Fathers: Revealed to babes, by Epiphanius the Latin (late 5th century)
"And he revealed these things to children. To which children? Not those who are children in age but to those who are children in respect to sin and wickedness. To them Jesus revealed how to seek the blessings of paradise and the things to come in the kingdom of heaven, because thus it was well pleasing before God that 'they should come from the east and the west and that they should lie down with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven; but that the sons of this worldly kingdom should be cast into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth (Matthew 8:11-12).'"
