Reading 1
Rom 4:1-8
What can we say that Abraham found,
our ancestor according to the flesh?
Indeed, if Abraham was justified on the basis of his works,
he has reason to boast;
but this was not so in the sight of God.
For what does the Scripture say?
Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.
A worker's wage is credited not as a gift, but as something due.
But when one does not work,
yet believes in the one who justifies the ungodly,
his faith is credited as righteousness.
So also David declares the blessedness of the person
to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:
Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven
and whose sins are covered.
Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord does not record.
Responsorial Psalm
Ps 32:1b-2, 5, 11
Blessed is he whose fault is taken away,
whose sin is covered.
Blessed the man to whom the LORD imputes not guilt,
in whose spirit there is no guile.
R. I turn to you, Lord, in time of trouble, and you fill me with the joy of salvation.
Then I acknowledged my sin to you,
my guilt I covered not.
I said, "I confess my faults to the LORD,"
and you took away the guilt of my sin.
R. I turn to you, Lord, in time of trouble, and you fill me with the joy of salvation.
Be glad in the LORD and rejoice, you just;
exult, all you upright of heart.
R. I turn to you, Lord, in time of trouble, and you fill me with the joy of salvation.
Gospel
Lk 12:1-7
So many people were crowding together
that they were trampling one another underfoot.
Jesus began to speak, first to his disciples,
"Beware of the leaven'that is, the hypocrisy'of the Pharisees.
"There is nothing concealed that will not be revealed,
nor secret that will not be known.
Therefore whatever you have said in the darkness
will be heard in the light,
and what you have whispered behind closed doors
will be proclaimed on the housetops.
I tell you, my friends,
do not be afraid of those who kill the body
but after that can do no more.
I shall show you whom to fear.
Be afraid of the one who after killing
has the power to cast into Gehenna;
yes, I tell you, be afraid of that one.
Are not five sparrows sold for two small coins?
Yet not one of them has escaped the notice of God.
Even the hairs of your head have all been counted.
Do not be afraid.
You are worth more than many sparrows."

This is a reflection from Angela on these readings in 2015.
Luke describes a time in which there were so many people gathering to see Jesus, that they were harming one another—trampling one another. Jesus immediately cautions against hypocrisy. The crowds were eager to see and hear Jesus, yet had no concern for each other while they sought Jesus. Jesus likens hypocrisy to leaven—once it is ‘ingested’, the heart is affected. Jesus warns against hypocrisy several times during his time on earth. Let us take a moment to reflect on times in which our actions may have been infected with hypocrisy. Has it been in our workplace? Has it been as we parent? Has it been carried out in a polling place? Our God can see our heart, and Jesus reminds us:
“There is nothing concealed that will not be revealed,
nor secret that will not be known.
Therefore whatever you have said in the darkness
will be heard in the light,
and what you have whispered behind closed doors
will be proclaimed on the housetops.
Jesus reminds us who to fear, and that ultimately believers will be cared for by God.
Are not five sparrows sold for two small coins?
Yet not one of them has escaped the notice of God.
Even the hairs of your head have all been counted.
Do not be afraid.
You are worth more than many sparrows.”
I find great comfort knowing that my God willingly gives guidance through his son, Jesus Christ. Jesus isn’t afraid to point out dangers, or faults—I believe in effort to teach us to do better. Ultimately, he knows each of us intimately and cares for us as a Father.
Now that we’ve taken time to reflect on hypocrisy in our lives, let us rejoice knowing that we have a Father who watches over each and every one of us and holds us close.

VALUABLES
“You are worth more than a flock of sparrows.” —Luke 12:7
So many of us have safety deposit boxes and even safes in our homes where we place all of our valuables to protect them from theft and fire. However, some valuables cannot be protected in that way. One example is our faith. Because of Abraham’s belief, God put him into the right and proper relationship with Him (Rm 4:6). He pronounced blessings upon him (Rm 4:7-8) and bequeathed to him a legacy of a great land and a multitude of descendants. Still the most valuable treasure to Abraham was his faith.
Abraham could not work out his salvation — he had to believe God’s Word first, then he was credited with justice (Rm 4:5). Sparrows counted for little among the ancients and yet God knows the price and value of each individual sparrow (Lk 12:6), for everything He created has value in His eyes. Whatever men and women do, God knows what they do and knows the price their activity merits, whether good or bad. True riches can only be found in God and not in man-made activities or values. God, the Creator of all, holds all in the palm of His hand (Rv 1:18, 20). Our values must be centered upon our believing Jesus Christ is Lord. Jesus Christ is the King of kings (see Rv 19:16). Jesus Christ is truly God’s Son.
Prayer: Father, let me never forget my worth as a human being and as a Christian in Your eyes. Your strong hand upholds me.
Promise: “Blest are they whose iniquities are forgiven, whose sins are covered over.” —Rm 4:7
Praise: “In light of heaven, the worst suffering on earth will be seen to be no more serious than one night in an inconvenient hotel” (St. Teresa of Jesus). St. Teresa shared the gifts God gave her with her Order, Popes and the whole Church.

What does leaven have to do with hypocrisy? To the Jews leaven was a sign of evil. It was a piece of dough from left-over bread which fermented. Fermentation was associated with decay and rotting - the state of foul-smelling decomposition. Why did Jesus warn his disciples to avoid the ways of the Pharisees? The Pharisees wanted everyone to recognize that they were pious and good Jews because they meticulously and scrupulously performed their religious duties. Jesus turned the table on them by declaring that outward appearance doesn't always match the inward intentions of the heart. Anyone can display outward signs of goodness while inwardly harboring evil thoughts and intentions.
God's light exposes darkness and transforms our minds and hearts
The word hypocrite means actor - someone who pretends to be what he or she is not. But who can truly be good, but God alone? Hypocrisy thrives on making a good appearance and masking what they don't want others to see. The good news is that God's light exposes the darkness of evil and sin in our hearts, even the sin which is unknown to us. And God's light transforms our hearts and minds and enables us to overcome hatred with love, pride with humility, and pretense with integrity and truthfulness. God gives grace to the humble and contrite of heart to enable us to overcome the leaven of insincerity and hypocrisy in our lives.
Godly fear draws us to God's love and truth
What does fear have to do with the kingdom of God? Fear is a powerful force. It can lead us to panic and flight or it can spur us to faith and action. The fear of God is the antidote to the fear of losing one's life.
"I sought the Lord, and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears... O fear the Lord, you his saints, for those who fear him have no want! ..Come, O sons, listen to me, I will teach you the fear of the Lord." (Psalm 34:4,9,11)
What is godly fear? It is reverence for the One who made us in love and who sustains us in mercy and kindness. The greatest injury or loss which we can experience is not physical but spiritual - the loss of one's soul and life to the power of hell. A healthy fear of God leads to spiritual maturity, wisdom, and right judgment and it frees us from the tyranny of sinful pride, deceit, and cowardice - especially in the face of evil, falsehood, and deception. Do you trust in God's grace and mercy and do you submit to his life-giving word of truth and righteousness (moral goodness)?
Psalm 33:1-5, 12-13
1 Rejoice in the LORD, O you righteous! Praise befits the upright.
2 Praise the LORD with the lyre, make melody to him with the harp of ten strings!
3 Sing to him a new song, play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts.
4 For the word of the LORD is upright; and all his work is done in faithfulness.
5 He loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of the steadfast love of the LORD.
12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people whom he has chosen as his heritage!
13 The LORD looks down from heaven, he sees all the sons of men
Daily Quote from the Early Church Fathers: Comfort for those who doubt God's providence in Christ, by Cyril of Alexandria (376-444 AD)
"To bestow yet another means of comfort on our minds, he forcibly added that five sparrows are scarcely perhaps worth a penny, and yet God does not forget even one of them. He also said that the separate hairs of your head are all numbered. Consider how great care he takes of those that love him. The Preserver of the universe extends his aid to things so worthless and descends to the smallest animals. How can he forget those who love him, especially when he takes so great care of them? He condescends to visit them, to know exactly each particular of their state, and even how many are the hairs of their heads... Let us not doubt that with a rich hand he will give his grace to those who love him. He will not permit us to fall into temptation. If, by his wise purpose he permits us to be taken in the snare in order that we may gain glory by suffering, he will most assuredly grant us the power to bear it."
