Reading 1
Rom 3:21-30
Now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law,
though testified to by the law and the prophets,
the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ
for all who believe.
For there is no distinction;
all have sinned and are deprived of the glory of God.
They are justified freely by his grace
through the redemption in Christ Jesus,
whom God set forth as an expiation,
through faith, by his Blood, to prove his righteousness
because of the forgiveness of sins previously committed,
through the forbearance of God?
to prove his righteousness in the present time,
that he might be righteous
and justify the one who has faith in Jesus.
What occasion is there then for boasting? It is ruled out.
On what principle, that of works?
No, rather on the principle of faith.
For we consider that a person is justified by faith
apart from works of the law.
Does God belong to Jews alone?
Does he not belong to Gentiles, too?
Yes, also to Gentiles, for God is one
and will justify the circumcised on the basis of faith
and the uncircumcised through faith.
Responsorial Psalm
Ps 130:1b-2, 3-4, 5-6ab
Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD;
LORD, hear my voice!
Let your ears be attentive
to my voice in supplication.
R. With the Lord there is mercy, and fullness of redemption.
If you, O LORD, mark iniquities,
Lord, who can stand?
But with you is forgiveness,
that you may be revered.
R. With the Lord there is mercy, and fullness of redemption.
I trust in the LORD;
my soul trusts in his word.
My soul waits for the LORD
more than sentinels wait for the dawn.
R. With the Lord there is mercy, and fullness of redemption.
Gospel
Lk 11:47-54
"Woe to you who build the memorials of the prophets
whom your fathers killed.
Consequently, you bear witness and give consent
to the deeds of your ancestors,
for they killed them and you do the building.
Therefore, the wisdom of God said,
"I will send to them prophets and Apostles;
some of them they will kill and persecute?
in order that this generation might be charged
with the blood of all the prophets
shed since the foundation of the world,
from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah
who died between the altar and the temple building.
Yes, I tell you, this generation will be charged with their blood!
Woe to you, scholars of the law!
You have taken away the key of knowledge.
You yourselves did not enter and you stopped those trying to enter."
When Jesus left, the scribes and Pharisees
began to act with hostility toward him
and to interrogate him about many things,
for they were plotting to catch him at something he might say.

When I read about Jesus' stating something that has been true for so long in the journey of faith - that prophets have been universally persecuted - I felt sad. I think of a prophet like Dom Hélder Câmara (1909–1999) a Brazilian archbishop, who said, "When I feed the poor, they call me a saint. When I ask why they are poor, they call me a communist." I think of some of the opposition Pope Francis is experiencing within the Church.
There is sadly, too often, so much division among us that it is difficult to tell who is prophetic - speaking the message of the Word of God, the Gospel - and who isn't.
It is not easy to discern the various spirits or movements within us. St. Ignatius' rules for the discernement of these spirits can help. Ignatius notes that when we are moving in the right direction, it is characteristic of the Holy Spirit to offer us consolation, peace, joy, and unity. It is characterisitic of the evil spirit to try to deflect us from the path of our progress by offering us doubts, confusion, division and conflict. Of course, when we are moving in the wrong direction, it is the evil spirit which is comforting us in our movement and it is the Holy Spirit which is challenging us.
I find that my greatest help with discernment is to stay close to the heart of Jesus. When I'm staying close to the experience of Jesus' merciful love for me, it is easier for me to stay close to Jesus. The process Ignatius describes - seeing him more clearly, loving him more dearly and following him more nearly - begins to happen as I appreciate Jesus and become more attracted to him and his ways. It is easy to fall in love with someone I'm attracted to. I find that ideology and my hostility to others tends to fall away when my heart becomes more drawn, with affection, for the compassionate way, the tender heart of Jesus. At that point, we are not simply moved by his message, but are touched by who he is. In that place of affection for Jesus, we can hear prophetic messages from the Gospel, or from the Holy Father, or from a prophet representing the Gospel.
I like to imagine that there is more harmony, more peace, more understanding, more compassion, more fraternity among us when we are each moving closer to Jesus. We can more easily, together, hear the call to self-sacrificing love for others. We can more easily hear the message that calls us to accompany the marginal. We can be moved by the prophetic message to advocate for the poor, for those in need among us, for the urgent call to work together for the saving of our planet and those who suffer first and worst from what is happening to it.
There will always be differences among us. We'll hear things differently - often from the perspective our backgrounds. But, I want to believe we don't have to be so tribal and brutal with each other. And, the closer we let ourselves fall in love with Jesus, the more we will think like him, feel like him, respond to those in need like him, mercy like him, and die to ourselves like him.
Reconciliation leads to healing. Healing leads to the ability to embrace each other's brokenness. And, Jesus' prayer the night before he died might come closer to reality, "Father, may they all be one." (John 17:21)

THE BLOOD THAT JESUS SHED FOR ME
“Now the justice of God has been manifested apart from the law, even though both law and prophets bear witness to it — that justice of God which works through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe.” —Romans 3:21-22
Prophets had been murdered for thousands of years, “from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah” (Lk 11:51). Yet not one of these murders was atoned for over all this time. Jesus said: “This generation will have to account for the blood of all the prophets shed since the foundation of the world” (Lk 11:50). All the people in the world do not have the power to atone for one sin. Yet, all the sins of all time were atoned for by one Man, Jesus (Rm 5:15). Jesus alone accounted for all sins. One drop of His blood did what centuries of animal sacrifices and millions of good works could never do (Heb 9:14; 10:4).
“All men are now undeservedly justified by the gift of God, through the redemption wrought in Christ Jesus. Through His blood, God made Him the means of expiation for all who believe” (Rm 3:24-25). Therefore, “worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches, wisdom and strength, honor and glory and praise!” (Rv 5:12) For “with Your blood You purchased for God men of every race and tongue, of every people and nation” (Rv 5:9).
Prayer: Jesus, at Your name, “every knee must bend...and every tongue proclaim...JESUS CHRIST IS LORD!” (Phil 2:10, 11)
Promise: “If You, O Lord, mark iniquities, Lord, who can stand? But with You is forgiveness, that You may be revered.” —Ps 130:3-4
Praise: Pope St. Callistus began his young life as a slave in the imperial Roman household. He squandered his master’s money and spent a short time in jail! Converting to the Lord, he became Pope in 217 AD.

How can God's wisdom free us from being double-minded and spiritually blind? God sent his prophets to open the ears of his people to hear and understand God's word and intention for their lives. God's wisdom is personified in the voice of the prophets, a voice that often brought rejection and death because they spoke for God rather than for human favor and approval. Jesus chastised many of the religious leaders of his day for being double-minded and for demanding from others standards which they refused to satisfy. They professed admiration for the prophets from the past by building their tombs while at the same time they opposed the message that the prophets spoke in God's name. They rejected the prophets' warnings and closed their ears to the word of God.
Jesus in the key of knowledge that opens God's kingdom for us
What does Jesus mean when he says they have taken away the key of knowledge? The religious lawyers and scribes held the "office of the keys" since they were the official interpreters of the Scriptures. Unfortunately their interpretation of the Scriptures became so distorted and difficult to understand that others were "shut off" to the Scriptures. They not only shut themselves to heaven - they also hindered others from understanding God's word. Through pride and envy, they rejected not only the prophets of old, but God's final prophet and Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus is the "key of David" (see Isaiah 22:22; Revelations 3:7) who opens heaven for those who accept him as Lord and Savior. He is the "Wisdom of God" and source of everlasting life.
Humility helps us to be receptive to God's wisdom
Only the humble of heart - those who thirst for God and acknowledge his word as true - can truly understand the wisdom which comes from above. [See Psalm 119:99ff: "I have more understanding than all my teachers, for your testimonies are my meditation."] God is ever ready to speak his word to us and to give us true wisdom and understanding. Do you hunger for the wisdom which comes from above?
Psalm 130:1-7
1 Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD!
2 Lord, hear my voice! Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications!
3 If you, O LORD, should mark iniquities, Lord, who could stand?
4 But there is forgiveness with you, that you may be feared.
5 I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, and in his word I hope;
6 my soul waits for the LORD more than watchmen for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning.
7 O Israel, hope in the LORD! For with the LORD there is steadfast love, and with him is plenteous redemption.
Daily Quote from the Early Church Fathers: The key of knowledge that opens the kingdom of God, by Cyril of Alexandria (376-444 AD)
"We consider that the key of knowledge means the law [of Moses] itself, and by faith in him, I mean justification in Christ. Although the law was in shadow and type, yet those types show to us the truth, and those shadows depict to us in many ways the mystery of Christ. A lamb was sacrificed according to the law of Moses. They ate its flesh. They anointed the lintels with its blood and overcame the destroyer. The blood of a mere sheep could not turn away death. Christ was typified under the form of a lamb. He endures to be the victim for the life of the world and saves by his blood those who are partakers of him. One might mention many other instances as well, by means of which we can discern the mystery of Christ sketched out in the shadows of the law. When speaking to the Jews, he once said, 'There is one that accuses you, even Moses, whom you trusted. For if you had believed Moses, you should have also believed me, because he wrote of me' (John 5:45-46). 'You search the Scriptures, because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness to me' (John 5:39). Every word of divinely inspired Scripture looks to him and refers to him. As it has been shown, if Moses speaks, he typified Christ. If the holy prophets that you name speak, they also proclaimed to us in many ways the mystery of Christ, preaching beforehand the salvation that is by him."
