<주님의 천사가 떨기나무 한가운데로부터 솟아오르는 불꽃 속에서 그에게 나타났다.>
탈출기. 3,1-6.9-12
그 무렵 1 모세는 미디안의 사제인 장인 이트로의 양 떼를 치고 있었다.
그는 양 떼를 몰고 광야를 지나 하느님의 산 호렙으로 갔다.
2 주님의 천사가 떨기나무 한가운데로부터 솟아오르는 불꽃 속에서
그에게 나타났다.
그가 보니 떨기가 불에 타는데도, 그 떨기는 타서 없어지지 않았다.
3 모세는 ‘내가 가서 이 놀라운 광경을 보아야겠다.
저 떨기가 왜 타 버리지 않을까?’ 하고 생각하였다.
4 모세가 보러 오는 것을 주님께서 보시고,
떨기 한가운데에서 “모세야, 모세야!” 하고 그를 부르셨다.
그가 “예, 여기 있습니다.” 하고 대답하자, 5 주님께서 말씀하셨다.
“이리 가까이 오지 마라.
네가 서 있는 곳은 거룩한 땅이니, 네 발에서 신을 벗어라.”
6 그분께서 다시 말씀하셨다.
“나는 네 아버지의 하느님,
곧 아브라함의 하느님, 이사악의 하느님, 야곱의 하느님이다.”
그러자 모세는 하느님을 뵙기가 두려워 얼굴을 가렸다.
9 “이제 이스라엘 자손들이 울부짖는 소리가 나에게 다다랐다.
나는 이집트인들이 그들을 억누르는 모습도 보았다.
10 내가 이제 너를 파라오에게 보낼 터이니,
내 백성 이스라엘 자손들을 이집트에서 이끌어 내어라.”
11 그러자 모세가 하느님께 아뢰었다.
“제가 무엇이라고 감히 파라오에게 가서,
이스라엘 자손들을 이집트에서 이끌어 낼 수 있겠습니까?”
12 하느님께서 대답하셨다.
“내가 너와 함께 있겠다.
이것이 내가 너를 보냈다는 표징이 될 것이다.
네가 이 백성을 이집트에서 이끌어 내면,
너희는 이 산 위에서 하느님을 예배할 것이다.”

25 그때에 예수님께서 이렇게 말씀하셨다.
“아버지, 하늘과 땅의 주님,
지혜롭다는 자들과 슬기롭다는 자들에게는 이것을 감추시고
철부지들에게는 드러내 보이시니, 아버지께 감사드립니다.
26 그렇습니다, 아버지! 아버지의 선하신 뜻이
이렇게 이루어졌습니다.”
27 “나의 아버지께서는 모든 것을 나에게 넘겨주셨다.
그래서 아버지 외에는 아무도 아들을 알지 못한다.
또 아들 외에는, 그리고 그가 아버지를 드러내 보여 주려는 사람 외에는
아무도 아버지를 알지 못한다.”

Ex 3:1-6, 9-12
Moses was tending the flock of his father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian.
Leading the flock across the desert, he came to Horeb,
the mountain of God.
There an angel of the LORD appeared to him in fire
flaming out of a bush.
As he looked on, he was surprised to see that the bush,
though on fire, was not consumed.
So Moses decided,
“I must go over to look at this remarkable sight,
and see why the bush is not burned.”
When the LORD saw him coming over to look at it more closely,
God called out to him from the bush, “Moses! Moses!”
He answered, “Here I am.”
God said, “Come no nearer!
Remove the sandals from your feet,
for the place where you stand is holy ground.
I am the God of your father,” he continued,
“the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob.
The cry of the children of Israel has reached me,
and I have truly noted that the Egyptians are oppressing them.
Come, now! I will send you to Pharaoh to lead my people,
the children of Israel, out of Egypt.”
But Moses said to God,
“Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh
and lead the children of Israel out of Egypt?”
He answered, “I will be with you;
and this shall be your proof that it is I who have sent you:
when you bring my people out of Egypt,
you will worship God on this very mountain.”

No one knows the Son except the Father,
and no one knows the Father except the Son

I come to this day in midsummer with many different feelings. Excited at an impending holiday in which we celebrate our nation's beginning. The celebration took place at my daughter’s house in Kansas where everyone traveled from Nebraska and Indiana to be together. Family togetherness is always so precious. This time will be especially precious with two new grandbabies who in today’s reading reminds me what it is like to be ‘childlike.’ To enjoy the simple and to be present. I also come to this day with a bit of weariness and the need for rejuvenation. Today’s passage was welcomed as a reminder to hand over my weariness and my burdens to Jesus.
Matthew 11:25
At that time Jesus said in reply, “I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to the childlike.
Vulnerable, open, humbled revealing our true childlike selves…these words come to mind as I read this verse. The message for me is a reminder for me during my daily time with God to come humbly with an open, authentic heart and express my gratitude, my thankfulness and lay down my burdens. Let God’s love seep into my soul and heal what needs to be healed. Keep my false self at bay and recognize how the false self can shadow God’s messages to me.
Matthew 11:26
Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will.
God has the sovereignty and Christ can and does execute the divine. I pray to deepen my understanding of this and to trust in it completely.
Matthew 11:27
All things have been handed over to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him.
Our intellectual self always gets in the way of what is in our hearts. In any situation, I pray to be attentive to what is in my heart. To be aware of what is stirring in my soul. To answer the question, is this ‘stirring’ moving me toward God or away from God? I seek understanding and ask that it be revealed to me if it is to be.

THE BURNING LOVE OF GOD
“The bush, though on fire, was not consumed.” —Exodus 3:2
Consider a burning candle. The flame on the candle eventually burns out when the wax is consumed. In Jesus, however, we are not like candles which burn out, but rather like the burning bush, which is neither burned out nor consumed (Ex 3:2).
Some people are afraid to receive God’s love. They fear that the fire of God’s love will consume them (Heb 12:29), and they will never be the same. Immersed in God’s love, they know they’ll have to repent and be dedicated to holiness (Ex 3:5). Yet just as Moses was drawn to the burning bush by the awesomeness of the sight, God’s love attracts people despite their fears.
God’s burning love is a Triune-love, the fire of love which perpetually arcs between the Father, and Son, and Holy Spirit. God pours this burning Triune-love, consuming but not destructive, into our hearts through the Holy Spirit (Rm 5:5). Nothing can separate us from this love (Rm 8:38-39).
Be like Moses. Walk toward God, not away from Him. Remove not only your sandals, but any love for the things of the world (1 Jn 2:15). Don’t be afraid of the overpowering love of God. Many have been hurt by failed human love, but the love of God never fails (1 Cor 13:8). Abandon yourself to God’s love. Your entire life has been a search for His love. Be true to yourself and true to God. Live in His love (Jn 15:9).
Prayer: Triune God, change me from being a consumer into being the consumed. I yield totally to Your burning love.
Promise: “The Lord secures justice and the rights of all the oppressed.” —Ps 103:6
Praise: St. Kateri Tekakwitha, a Native American, was intrigued at a young age by Jesuit missionaries. Years later she was baptized and suffered persecution for her decision. She was canonized in 2012.

Do you want to know the mind and thoughts of God? Jesus thanks the Father in heaven for revealing to his disciples the wisdom and knowledge of God. What does Jesus' prayer tell us about God and about ourselves? First, it tells us that God is both Father and Lord of earth as well as heaven. He is both Creator and Author of all that he has made, the first origin of everything and transcendent authority, and at the same time he shows loving care and goodness toward all his children. All fatherhood and motherhood is derived from him (Ephesians 3:14-15).
Pride and inordinate love of self
Jesus' prayer also contains a warning that pride can keep us from the love and knowledge of God. What makes us ignorant and blind to the things of God? Certainly intellectual pride, coldness of heart, and stubbornness of will shut out God and his kingdom of peace, joy, and righteousness. Pride is the root of all vice and the strongest influence propelling us to sin. It first vanquishes the heart, making it cold and indifferent towards God. It also closes the mind to God's truth and wisdom for our lives. What is pride? It is the inordinate love of oneself at the expense of others and the exaggerated estimation of one's own learning and importance.
Simplicity of heart
Jesus contrasts intellectual pride with child-like simplicity and humility. The simple of heart are like "infants" in the sense that they see purely without pretense and acknowledge their dependence and trust in the one who is greater, wiser, and more trustworthy. They seek one thing - the "summum bonum" or "greatest good," who is God himself. Simplicity of heart is wedded with humility, the queen of virtues, because humility inclines the heart towards grace and truth. Just as pride is the root of every sin and evil, so humility is the only soil in which the grace of God can take root. It alone takes the right attitude before God and allows him, as God, to do all. God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble (Proverbs 3:34, James 4:6). Only the humble in heart can receive true wisdom and understanding of God and his ways. Do you submit to God's word with simple trust and humility?
Jesus reveals the Father to us
Jesus makes a claim which no one would have dared to make - he is the perfect revelation of God. One of the greatest truths of the Christian faith is that we can know the living God. Our knowledge of God is not simply limited to knowing something about God, but we can know God personally. The essence of Christianity, and what makes it distinct from Judaism and other religions, is the knowledge of God as our Father. Jesus makes it possible for each of us to personally know God as our Father. To see Jesus is to see what God is like.
In Jesus we see the perfect love of God - a God who cares intensely and who yearns over men and women, loving them to the point of laying down his life for them upon the Cross. Jesus is the perfect revelation of God - a God who loves us completely, unconditionally, and perfectly. Jesus also promises that God the Father will hear our prayers when we pray in his name. That is why Jesus taught his followers to pray with confidence, Our Father who art in heaven ..give us this day our daily bread. Do you pray to your Father in heaven with joy and confidence in his love and care for you?
Lord Jesus, give me the child-like simplicity and purity of faith to gaze upon your face with joy and confidence in your all-merciful love. Remove every doubt, fear, and proud thought which would hinder me from receiving your word with trust and humble submission.
Psalm 103:1-8
1 Bless the LORD, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless his holy name!

3 who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases,
4 who redeems your life from the Pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,
