Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Daily Mass : http://www.catholictv.com/shows/daily-mass
Reading 1
Am 7:12-15
“Off with you, visionary, flee to the land of Judah!
There earn your bread by prophesying,
but never again prophesy in Bethel;
for it is the king’s sanctuary and a royal temple.”
Amos answered Amaziah, “I was no prophet,
nor have I belonged to a company of prophets;
I was a shepherd and a dresser of sycamores.
The LORD took me from following the flock, and said to me,
Go, prophesy to my people Israel.”
Responsorial Psalm
Ps 85:9-10, 11-12, 13-14
I will hear what God proclaims;
the LORD —for he proclaims peace.
Near indeed is his salvation to those who fear him,
glory dwelling in our land.
R. Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation.
Kindness and truth shall meet;
justice and peace shall kiss.
Truth shall spring out of the earth,
and justice shall look down from heaven.
R. Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation.
The LORD himself will give his benefits;
our land shall yield its increase.
Justice shall walk before him,
and prepare the way of his steps.
R. Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation.
Reading 2
Eph 1:3-14
who has blessed us in Christ
with every spiritual blessing in the heavens,
as he chose us in him, before the foundation of the world,
to be holy and without blemish before him.
In love he destined us for adoption to himself through Jesus Christ,
in accord with the favor of his will,
for the praise of the glory of his grace
that he granted us in the beloved.
In him we have redemption by his blood,
the forgiveness of transgressions,
in accord with the riches of his grace that he lavished upon us.
In all wisdom and insight, he has made known to us
the mystery of his will in accord with his favor
that he set forth in him as a plan for the fullness of times,
to sum up all things in Christ, in heaven and on earth.
In him we were also chosen,
destined in accord with the purpose of the One
who accomplishes all things according to the intention of his will,
so that we might exist for the praise of his glory,
we who first hoped in Christ.
In him you also, who have heard the word of truth,
the gospel of your salvation, and have believed in him,
were sealed with the promised holy Spirit,
which is the first installment of our inheritance
toward redemption as God’s possession, to the praise of his glory.
Or
Eph 1:3-10

Gospel
Mk 6:7-13
Jesus summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by twoand gave them authority over unclean spirits.
He instructed them to take nothing for the journey
but a walking stick—
no food, no sack, no money in their belts.
They were, however, to wear sandals
but not a second tunic.
He said to them,
“Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave.
Whatever place does not welcome you or listen to you,
leave there and shake the dust off your feet
in testimony against them.”
So they went off and preached repentance.
The Twelve drove out many demons,
and they anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.

Today’s readings are about being called. Amos says he was a shepherd (and what we would today call an arborist) when the Lord called him away from his work and told him to go, to prophesy to God’s people. Paul in Ephesians talks in multiple ways about the followers of Christ being chosen, destined, etc.
In the Gospel, the 12 apostles are literally called, and sent, by Jesus. There’s no question what He is calling them to do. He summons them and then He sends them out, two by two. He gives them specific instructions about what they are to do and how to do it.
How often do we think about the fact that we are called? Each day when we open our eyes and a new day has dawned for us, we are called. We are called to rise, and then we are called to do something, often many things. Most days we have a to-do list a mile long and obligations that we take for granted, at work and/or at home.
If you click on these daily reflections, you are being called. You may think it is an act of your will, or habit, but you are responding to a call, an invitation. When my neighbor asks me to pick up her mail while she is on vacation, I am responding to God’s call to be of service. Likewise, when I resist the temptation to spread gossip or nurse a grudge, I am responding to a call. When we work together with a team to accomplish an improvement in our community, we are saying yes to a call. When you conserve energy and recycle, you are answering God’s call to care for our planet and our resources.
I think the Gospel acclamation tucked into today’s readings, also from Ephesians, holds a key for us as Christians. It prays that we “may know what is the hope that belongs to our call.” The call we receive each day, and at every turn, is not to merely accomplish a to-do list. When we begin our day by putting that list, those obligations, in God’s hands, we invite God to reveal the hope that belongs to that call. We are part of something greater that God is doing in our world and that gives us hope. We pray today that we WILL know the hope that is always available to us throughout our lives, the hope that guides us and sustains us, and enlightens the eyes of our hearts.

LOW ENOUGH TO BE EXALTED? (SEE MT 23:12)
“The Lord took me from following the flock.” —Amos 7:15
Amos was a country boy, a shepherd, and a pruner of sycamore trees — a nobody chosen by God to prophesy to the nation of Israel (Am 7:14ff). Jesus likewise sent out His apostles as nobodies. He didn’t let them have the possessions and money by which many people try to command respect (see Mk 6:8-9). He didn’t even provide them with accommodations (see Mk 6:10). The apostles had about as much prestige as homeless people. Of course, without credentials, status, clout, or worldly power, they were almost certain to be rejected. So Jesus told them to be prepared to shake the dust from their feet if any place did not receive them (Mk 6:11).
Jesus is the same today as yesterday (Heb 13:8). He continues to insist on choosing “the world’s lowborn and despised, those who count for nothing, to reduce to nothing those who were something; so that mankind can do no boasting before God” (1 Cor 1:28-29). When Jesus sends us forth in weakness, His power reaches perfection (2 Cor 12:9). Jesus promised that the lowly will inherit the earth (Mt 5:5). Will you agree to become lowly? Will you let the Lord work through you?
Prayer: Father, may I be lowly in the world’s eyes and great in Your eyes.
Promise: “Praised be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Who has bestowed on us in Christ every spiritual blessing in the heavens!” —Eph 1:3
Praise: “Down I went to the roots of the mountains; the bars of the nether world were closing behind me forever, but You brought my life up from the pit, O Lord, my God” (Jon 2:7). Praise Jesus, our Protector!

What kind of authority and power does the Lord want you to exercise on his behalf? Jesus gave his apostles both the power and the authority to speak and to act in his name. He commanded them to do the works which he did - to heal the sick. to cast out evil spirits, and to speak the word of God - the good news of the gospel which they received from Jesus. When Jesus spoke of power and authority he did something unheard of. He wedded power and authority with self-sacrificing love and humility. The "world" and the "flesh" seek power for selfish gain. Jesus teaches us to use it for the good of our neighbor.
Why does Jesus tell the apostles to "travel light" with little or no provision? "Poverty of spirit" frees us from greed and preoccupation with our possessions and makes ample room for God's provision. The Lord wants his disciples to be dependent on him and not on themselves. He wills to work in and through each of us for his glory. Are you ready to use the spiritual authority and power which God wishes you to exercise on his behalf? The Lord entrusts us with his gifts and talents. Are you eager to place yourself at his service, to do whatever he bids you, and to witness his truth and saving power to whomever he sends you?
Psalm 85:8-13
8 Let me hear what God the LORD will speak, for he will speak peace to his people, to his saints, to those who turn to him in their hearts.
9.Surely his salvation is at hand for those who fear him, that glory may dwell in our land.
10 Steadfast love and faithfulness will meet; righteousness and peace will kiss each other.
11 Faithfulness will spring up from the ground, and righteousness will look down from the sky.
12 Yes, the LORD will give what is good, and our land will yield its increase.
13 Righteousness will go before him, and make his footsteps a way.
Daily Quote from the Early Church Fathers: Jesus gives them power to heal and cast out evil spirits, by Cyril of Alexandria (376-444 AD)
"The grace bestowed upon the holy apostles is worthy of all admiration. But the bountifulness of the Giver surpasses all praise and admiration. He gives them, as I said, his own glory. They receive authority over the evil spirits. They reduce to nothing the pride of the devil that was so highly exalted and arrogant. They render ineffectual the demon's wickedness. By the might and efficacy of the Holy Spirit, burning them as if they were on fire, they make the devil come forth with groans and weeping from those whom he had possessed...
"He glorified his disciples, therefore, by giving them authority and power over the evil spirits and over sicknesses. Did he honor them without reason and make them famous without any logical cause? How can this be true? It was necessary, most necessary, that they should be able to work miracles, having been publicly appointed ministers of sacred proclamations. By means of their works, they then could convince men that they were the ministers of God and mediators of all beneath the heaven. The apostles then could invite them all to reconciliation and justification by faith and point out the way of salvation and of life that is this justification."
