제1독서

<예수님 말고는 다른 누구에게도 구원이 없습니다.>

사도행전. 4,1-12
 그 무렵 불구자가 치유받은 뒤, 1 베드로와 요한이 백성에게 말하고 있을 때에
사제들과 성전 경비대장과 사두가이들이 다가왔다.
2 그들은 사도들이 백성을 가르치면서
예수님을 내세워 죽은 이들의 부활을 선포하는 것을 불쾌히 여기고 있었다.
3 그리하여 그들은 사도들을 붙잡아 이튿날까지 감옥에 가두어 두었다.
이미 저녁때가 되었기 때문이다.
4 그런데 사도들의 말을 들은 사람들 가운데 많은 이가 믿게 되어,

장정만도 그 수가 오천 명가량이나 되었다.
5 이튿날 유다 지도자들과 원로들과 율법 학자들이 예루살렘에 모였다.
6 그 자리에는 한나스 대사제와 카야파와 요한과 알렉산드로스와
그 밖의 대사제 가문 사람들도 모두 있었다.
7 그들은 사도들을 가운데에 세워 놓고,
“당신들은 무슨 힘으로, 누구의 이름으로 그런 일을 하였소?” 하고 물었다.
8 그때에 베드로가 성령으로 가득 차 그들에게 말하였다.
“백성의 지도자들과 원로 여러분,
9 우리가 병든 사람에게 착한 일을 한 사실과
이 사람이 어떻게 구원받았는가 하는 문제로
오늘 신문을 받는 것이라면,
10 여러분 모두와 온 이스라엘 백성은 이것을 알아야 합니다.
나자렛 사람 예수 그리스도의 이름으로,
곧 여러분이 십자가에 못 박았지만
하느님께서 죽은 이들 가운데에서 다시 일으키신 바로 그분의 이름으로,
이 사람이 여러분 앞에 온전한 몸으로 서게 되었습니다.
11 이 예수님께서는 ‘너희 집 짓는 자들에게 버림을 받았지만
모퉁이의 머릿돌이 되신 분’이십니다.
12 그분 말고는 다른 누구에게도 구원이 없습니다.
사실 사람들에게 주어진 이름 가운데에서
우리가 구원받는 데에 필요한 이름은 하늘 아래 이 이름밖에 없습니다.”

<예수님께서는 다가가셔서 빵을 들어 그들에게 주시고 고기도 주셨다.>

요한. 21,1-14
그때에 1 예수님께서는 티베리아스 호숫가에서
다시 제자들에게 당신 자신을 드러내셨는데, 이렇게 드러내셨다.
2 시몬 베드로와 ‘쌍둥이’라고 불리는 토마스,
갈릴래아 카나 출신 나타나엘과 제베대오의 아들들,
그리고 그분의 다른 두 제자가 함께 있었다.
3 시몬 베드로가 그들에게 “나는 고기 잡으러 가네.” 하고 말하자,
그들이 “우리도 함께 가겠소.” 하였다.
그들이 밖으로 나가 배를 탔지만 그날 밤에는 아무것도 잡지 못하였다.
4 어느덧 아침이 될 무렵, 예수님께서 물가에 서 계셨다.
그러나 제자들은 그분이 예수님이신 줄을 알지 못하였다.
5 예수님께서 그들에게, “얘들아, 무얼 좀 잡았느냐?” 하시자,
그들이 대답하였다. “못 잡았습니다.”
6 예수님께서 그들에게 이르셨다.
“그물을 배 오른쪽에 던져라. 그러면 고기가 잡힐 것이다.”
그래서 제자들이 그물을 던졌더니,
고기가 너무 많이 걸려 그물을 끌어 올릴 수가 없었다.
7 예수님께서 사랑하신 그 제자가 베드로에게 “주님이십니다.” 하고 말하였다.
주님이시라는 말을 듣자,
옷을 벗고 있던 베드로는 겉옷을 두르고 호수로 뛰어들었다.
8 다른 제자들은 그 작은 배로 고기가 든 그물을 끌고 왔다.
그들은 뭍에서 백 미터쯤밖에 떨어져 있지 않았던 것이다.
9 그들이 뭍에 내려서 보니, 숯불이 있고 그 위에 물고기가 놓여 있고 빵도 있었다.
10 예수님께서 그들에게 말씀하셨다. “방금 잡은 고기를 몇 마리 가져오너라.”
11 그러자 시몬 베드로가 배에 올라 그물을 뭍으로 끌어 올렸다.
그 안에는 큰 고기가 백쉰세 마리나 가득 들어 있었다.
고기가 그토록 많은데도 그물이 찢어지지 않았다.
12 예수님께서 그들에게 “와서 아침을 먹어라.” 하고 말씀하셨다.
제자들 가운데에는 “누구십니까?” 하고 감히 묻는 사람이 없었다.
그분이 주님이시라는 것을 알고 있었기 때문이다.
13 예수님께서는 다가가셔서 빵을 들어 그들에게 주시고 고기도 그렇게 주셨다.
14 이렇게 예수님께서는 죽은 이들 가운데에서 되살아나신 뒤에
세 번째로 제자들에게 나타나셨다.

Reading 1

Acts 4:1-12

After the crippled man had been cured,
while Peter and John were still speaking to the people,
the priests, the captain of the temple guard,
and the Sadducees confronted them,
disturbed that they were teaching the people
and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead.
They laid hands on Peter and John
and put them in custody until the next day,
since it was already evening.
But many of those who heard the word came to believe
and the number of men grew to about five thousand.

On the next day, their leaders, elders, and scribes
were assembled in Jerusalem , with Annas the high priest,
Caiaphas, John, Alexander,
and all who were of the high-priestly class.
They brought them into their presence and questioned them,
“By what power or by what name have you done this?”
Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, answered them,
“Leaders of the people and elders:
If we are being examined today
about a good deed done to a cripple,
namely, by what means he was saved,
then all of you and all the people of Israel should know
that it was in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazorean
whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead;
in his name this man stands before you healed.
He is the stone rejected by you, the builders,
which has become the cornerstone. 
There is no salvation through anyone else,
nor is there any other name under heaven
given to the human race by which we are to be saved.”

Jn 21:1-14  

Jesus revealed himself again to his disciples at the Sea of Tiberias .
He revealed himself in this way.
Together were Simon Peter, Thomas called Didymus,
Nathanael from Cana in Galilee ,
Zebedee’s sons, and two others of his disciples.
Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.”
They said to him, “We also will come with you.”
So they went out and got into the boat,
but that night they caught nothing.
When it was already dawn, Jesus was standing on the shore;
but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.
Jesus said to them, “Children, have you caught anything to eat?”
They answered him, “No.”
So he said to them, “Cast the net over the right side of the boat
and you will find something.”
So they cast it, and were not able to pull it in
because of the number of fish.
So the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord.”
When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord,
he tucked in his garment, for he was lightly clad,
and jumped into the sea.
The other disciples came in the boat,
for they were not far from shore, only about a hundred yards,
dragging the net with the fish.
When they climbed out on shore,
they saw a charcoal fire with fish on it and bread.
Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you just caught.”
So Simon Peter went over and dragged the net ashore
full of one hundred fifty-three large fish.
Even though there were so many, the net was not torn.
Jesus said to them, “Come, have breakfast.”
And none of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?”
because they realized it was the Lord.
Jesus came over and took the bread and gave it to them,
and in like manner the fish.
This was now the third time Jesus was revealed to his disciples 

after being raised from the dead.

 The gospel scene vividly portrays many truths hidden within what is for me a dramatic, almost comedic post-resurrection story.

I imagine Peter and other disciples laboring throughout a hot, steamy night on the Sea of Tiberias, only to come up empty. No fish for all that work. Tired and hungry, they give up and approach the shore. How will they feed their families today? It is dawn.

A figure standing on the shore calls out: ”Children, have you caught anything to eat?”

“No.”

“Cast the net over the right side of the boat and you will find something.”

I imagine they are desperate enough to heed the words of this stranger. They reverse course and follow his advice. You know the rest. So many fish they are unable to haul in the net.

The disciple whom Jesus loved then recognizes the stranger. “It is the Lord!” he cries.

Peter, always the impulsive one, hurls his heart out ahead of him and jumps into the water, without thought of proper clothing or decorum or safety, his only goal to be with Jesus. There are no barriers.

Not only does Jesus direct the disciples to their abundant catch, he calmly feeds them as he has so often before his death and resurrection. I see him greeting Peter and the rest with a twinkle in his eye and perhaps a little smile, as he dishes up the fish and bread.

Can we follow our hearts to recognize Jesus in the stranger? Does it take love to reveal the truth? Can we hear what he is telling us? Can we trust we will be fed?

STARTING OVER?

“I am going out to fish.” —John 21:3

Jesus told Peter to leave the fishing business and follow Him (Mt 4:19). Even after meeting the risen Christ several times, Peter denied Christ again and returned to the fishing business. Peter denied Jesus, the Light, and chose the night. “All through the night they caught nothing” (Jn 21:3). Peter was naked (see Jn 21:7, NAB), and not clothed with power (Lk 24:49), righteousness (see Eph 6:14), and life in Christ (Eph 4:24). Peter chose night, nothing, and nakedness.

Jesus, in all His mercy, forgave Peter another three times and proceeded to start again from the beginning with him. Jesus asked Peter three times if he loved Him (Jn 21:15-17). Then Jesus did what He had done when He first met Peter: He commanded Peter to follow Him (Jn 21:19). A few days after this, Peter received the Holy Spirit at the first Christian Pentecost and led three thousand people to be baptized into Jesus (Acts 2:41). Peter became the first leader of the Church and a fearless witness for Jesus (see Acts 4:8ff).

Have you squandered your Christian life? Have you lost your first Love? (Rv 2:4) Have you forced Jesus to start over with you? If you repent, there is hope. Even if you’re starting over, the risen Lord can make you a great leader in His Kingdom. Repent!

Prayer:  Lord, have mercy on me again.

Promise:  “This Jesus is ‘the Stone rejected by you the builders Which has become the Cornerstone.’ There is no salvation in anyone else, for there is no other name in the whole world given to men by which we are to be saved.” —Acts 4:11-12

Praise:  Alleluia! Christ has vanquished sin and death! Praise You, Lord, for Your resurrection victory.

 Why didn't the apostles immediately recognize the Lord when he greeted them at the Sea of Tiberias? John gives us a clue. He states that Peter had decided to return to his home district of Galilee, very likely so he could resume his fishing career. Peter was discouraged and didn't know what to do after the tragedy of Jesus' death! He went back to his previous career out of despair and uncertainty. The other apostles followed him back to Galilee.

The gift of faith opens our eyes to recognize the risen Lord Jesus in our midst
When was the last time Peter was commanded to let down his net after a futile night of fishing? It was at the beginning of Jesus' ministry in Galilee when the Lord dramatically approached Peter in his fishing boat after a futile night of fishing and commanded him to lower his nets (see Luke 5:4-11). After the miraculous catch, Jesus told Peter that he would be 'catching people" for the kingdom of God. Now Jesus repeats the same miracle. John, the beloved disciple, is the first to recognize the Lord. Peter impulsively leaps from the boat and runs to the Lord. Do you run to the Lord when you meet setbacks, disappointments, or trials? The Lord is ever ready to renew us in faith and to give us fresh hope in his promises.

Do you recognize the presence of the Risen Lord in your life?
Skeptics who disbelieve the resurrection say the disciples only saw a vision of Jesus. The Gospel accounts, however, give us a vivid picture of the reality of the resurrection. Jesus went out of his way to offer his disciples various proofs of his resurrection - that he is real and true flesh, not just a spirit or ghost. In his third appearance to the apostles, after Jesus performed the miraculous catch of fish, he prepared a breakfast and ate with them. John's prompt recognition of the Master - It is the Lord! and Peter's immediate response to run to the Lord - stands in sharp contrast to Peter's previous denial of his Master during the night of Jesus' arrest. The Lord Jesus reveals himself to each of us as we open our hearts to hear his word. Do you recognize the Lord's presence in your life and do you accept his word with faith and trust?

Lord Jesus, you are the Resurrection and the Life. Increase my faith in the power of your resurrection and in the truth that you are truly alive! May I never doubt your life-giving word nor stray from your presence.

"The bodies of the righteous at the resurrection will need neither any fruit to preserve them from dying of disease or the wasting decay of old age nor any bodily nourishment to prevent hunger and thirst. For they will be endowed with such a sure and inviolable gift of immortality that they will not eat because they have to, but only if they want to.
