민수기. 21,4-9
그 무렵 이스라엘은 4 에돔 땅을 돌아서 가려고,
호르 산을 떠나 갈대 바다로 가는 길에 들어섰다.
길을 가는 동안에 백성은 마음이 조급해졌다.
5 그래서 백성은 하느님과 모세에게 불평하였다.
“당신들은 어쩌자고 우리를 이집트에서 올라오게 하여,
이 광야에서 죽게 하시오? 양식도 없고 물도 없소.
이 보잘것없는 양식은 이제 진저리가 나오.”
6 그러자 주님께서 백성에게 불 뱀들을 보내셨다.
그것들이 백성을 물어, 많은 이스라엘 백성이 죽었다.
7 백성이 모세에게 와서 간청하였다.
“우리가 주님과 당신께 불평하여 죄를 지었습니다.
이 뱀을 우리에게서 치워 주시도록 주님께 기도해 주십시오.”
그래서 모세가 백성을 위하여 기도하였다.
8 그러자 주님께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다.
“너는 불 뱀을 만들어 기둥 위에 달아 놓아라.
물린 자는 누구든지 그것을 보면 살게 될 것이다.”
9 그리하여 모세는 구리 뱀을 만들어 그것을 기둥 위에 달아 놓았다.
뱀이 사람을 물었을 때, 그 사람이 구리 뱀을 쳐다보면 살아났다.

요한. 8,21-30
그때에 예수님께서 바리사이들에게 21 이르셨다.
“나는 간다. 너희가 나를 찾겠지만 너희는 자기 죄 속에서 죽을 것이다.
내가 가는 곳에 너희는 올 수 없다.”
22 그러자 유다인들이 “‘내가 가는 곳에 너희는 올 수 없다.’ 하니,
자살하겠다는 말인가?” 하였다.
23 예수님께서 그들에게 말씀하셨다. “너희는 아래에서 왔고 나는 위에서 왔다.
너희는 이 세상에 속하지만 나는 이 세상에 속하지 않는다.
24 그래서 너희는 자기 죄 속에서 죽을 것이라고 내가 말하였다.
정녕 내가 나임을 믿지 않으면, 너희는 자기 죄 속에서 죽을 것이다.”
25 그러자 그들이 예수님께 “당신이 누구요?” 하고 물었다.
예수님께서 그들에게 이르셨다. “처음부터 내가 너희에게 말해 오지 않았느냐?
26 나는 너희에 관하여 이야기할 것도, 심판할 것도 많다.
그러나 나를 보내신 분께서는 참되시기에,
나는 그분에게서 들은 것을 이 세상에 이야기할 따름이다.”
27 그들은 예수님께서 아버지를 가리켜 말씀하신 줄을 깨닫지 못하였다.
28 그래서 예수님께서 다시 그들에게 이르셨다.
“너희는 사람의 아들을 들어 올린 뒤에야 내가 나임을 깨달을 뿐만 아니라,
내가 스스로는 아무것도 하지 않고
아버지께서 가르쳐 주신 대로만 말한다는 것을 깨달을 것이다.
29 나를 보내신 분께서는 나와 함께 계시고 나를 혼자 버려두지 않으신다.
내가 언제나 그분 마음에 드는 일을 하기 때문이다.”
30 예수님께서 이렇게 말씀하시자 많은 사람이 그분을 믿었다.

Nm 21:4-9
to bypass the land of Edom.
But with their patience worn out by the journey,
the people complained against God and Moses,
"Why have you brought us up from Egypt to die in this desert,
where there is no food or water?
We are disgusted with this wretched food!"
In punishment the LORD sent among the people saraph serpents,
which bit the people so that many of them died.
Then the people came to Moses and said,
"We have sinned in complaining against the LORD and you.
Pray the LORD to take the serpents away from us."
So Moses prayed for the people, and the LORD said to Moses,
"Make a saraph and mount it on a pole,
and whoever looks at it after being bitten will live."
Moses accordingly made a bronze serpent and mounted it on a pole,
and whenever anyone who had been bitten by a serpent
looked at the bronze serpent, he lived.

"I am going away and you will look for me,
but you will die in your sin.
Where I am going you cannot come."
So the Jews said,
"He is not going to kill himself, is he,
because he said, 'Where I am going you cannot come'?"
He said to them, "You belong to what is below,
I belong to what is above.
You belong to this world,
but I do not belong to this world.
That is why I told you that you will die in your sins.
For if you do not believe that I AM,
you will die in your sins."
So they said to him, "Who are you?"
Jesus said to them, "What I told you from the beginning.
I have much to say about you in condemnation.
But the one who sent me is true,
and what I heard from him I tell the world."
They did not realize that he was speaking to them of the Father.
So Jesus said to them,
"When you lift up the Son of Man,
then you will realize that I AM,
and that I do nothing on my own,
but I say only what the Father taught me.
The one who sent me is with me.
He has not left me alone,
because I always do what is pleasing to him."
Because he spoke this way, many came to believe in him.

Today, the fifth Tuesday of Lent, only one week away from the contemplation of our Lord's Passion, He invites us to look at him in anticipation while redeeming us from the Cross: «Our High Priest is Christ Jesus, his precious body is our sacrifice that He immolated on the altar of the Cross for the salvation of all people» (Saint John Fisher).
«When you have lifted up the Son of Man» (Jn 8:28). The Crucified Christ, indeed,—“lifted up” Christ!— is the great and definite sign of the Father's love towards the fallen Humankind. His open arms, stretched out between Heaven and Earth, outline the indelible sign of His friendship with us, men. By seeing Him like this, lifted up before our sinful glance, we shall realize that He is (cf. Jn 8:28), and then, as those Jews that were listening to him, we shall also believe in Him.
only the friendship of He, who is fully acquainted with the Cross, may provide us with the needed connaturality to get us into the Redemptor's heart. Pretending the Gospel without the Cross, bare of any Christian sense of mortification, or infected by the pagan and naturalist ambiance which unables us to understand the redeeming suffering values, would place us in the terrible conjuncture of having to hear from Christ's lips: —After all, why should I go on speaking to you?
That our serene and contemplative look of the Cross, be a question to the Crucified, whereby, wordless and noiseless, we tell him: «Who are you?» (Jn 8:25). And He will answer that He is «the way, the truth, and the life» (Jn 14:6), the Stock, which we, poor vine shoots, if not united to, will not be able to bear any fruit, because only him has words of eternal life. And thus, if we do not believe that He is, we shall die by our sins. However, we shall live, despite everything, and we shall already live in this world a Heavenly life, if we take from Him the joyous certitude that the Father is with us, that He will never leave us alone. Thus, we shall imitate the Son by doing always that which pleases the Father.

The words in the psalm today have been the words of my prayer during this global pandemic of COVID-19. At the moment of writing this reflection, I have lived just over a full week working from home, respecting the physical distancing expectations. In checking in with undergraduate students I minister to, friends, and family near and far, there is a mix of emotions – overwhelmed, relieved to be safe or secure in their jobs, sad to be missing friends and family, mourning the graduations, weddings, and other celebrations that will not be what was imagined, scared, anxious, etc. I am taking this time day-by-day. But my prayer each day has sounded a lot like the Responsorial Psalm. And so, today, I ask you to join in my prayer, that it echo in our hearts and resound across our world.
O Lord, hear my prayer, and let my cry come to you.
O Lord, hear my prayer for those most at risk.For those whose age and medical condition make them more vulnerable.
For those who are without a home, who live on our streets, who rely on social services to meet their daily needs.
For those whose jobs are at risk.
For the migrants and refugees around the world who are already fleeing for their safety.O Lord, hear my prayer, and let my cry come to you.
O Lord, hear my prayer for those on the frontlines of response.For the nurses, doctors, and medical professionals who show up everyday with energy, compassion, and resilience for the work of care ahead of them.
For the grocery store workers and truck drivers keeping shelves stocked.
For home care providers, stay-at-home and work-from-home parents.
For mail carriers and package deliverers.O Lord, hear my prayer, and let my cry come to you.
O Lord, hear my prayer for leaders making difficult and important decisions.For leaders of countries, states, and cities.
For leaders of faith communities and places of worship.
For leaders of schools, daycares, and social services.
For leaders of businesses, small and large.

Brothers and sisters, people of faith around the world. Let us continue to pray for the end of this global pandemic and prepare in hope for the dawn that is to come. For this to impact so many countries during this time of Lent, this time of darkness, of preparation, of sacrifice does not go unnoticed. This time feels dark. And, as a Christian, I believe that Easter will come. That light, hope, and love will win out. That eventually, this darkness will pass. I continue to pray, to cry out to God.

"When you have lifted up the Son of man"
Do you know the healing power of the cross of Jesus Christ? When the people of Israel were afflicted with serpents in the wilderness because of their sin, God instructed Moses: "Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a pole; and every one who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live" (Numbers 21:8). The visible sign of the "fiery bronze serpent" being lifted up in the sight of the people reminded them of two important facts - sin leads to death and repentance leads to God's mercy and healing. The lifting up of the bronze serpent on a wooden pole points to Jesus Christ being lifted up on the wooden cross at Calvary where he took our sins upon himself to make atonement to the Father on our behalf. The cross of Christ broke the curse of sin and death and won pardon, healing, and everlasting life for all who believe in Jesus, the Son of God and Savior of the world.
Either for him or against him
While many believed in Jesus and his message, many others, including the religious leaders, opposed him. Some openly mocked him when he warned them about their sin of unbelief. It's impossible to be indifferent to Jesus' word and his judgments. We are either for him or against him. There is no middle ground and no neutral parties.
When Jesus spoke about "going away" he was referring to his return in glory to his Father in heaven. Jesus warned his opponents that if they continued to disobey God's word and to reject him as Lord and Savior, they would shut themselves off from God and die in their sins. Jesus' words echoed the prophetic warning given to Ezekiel that people would die in their sins if they did not turn to God and ask for his mercy and pardon (see Ezekiel 3:18 and 18:18). In every age God warns his people to heed his word before the time is too late to seek his mercy and forgiveness. God gives us time to turn to him and to receive his mercy and pardon, but that time is right now.
To sin literally means to miss the mark or to be off target. The essence of sin is that it diverts us from God and from our true purpose in life - to know the source of all truth and beauty which is God himself and to be united with God in everlasting joy. When Adam and Eve yielded to their sin of disobedience, they literally tried to hide themselves from God's presence (Genesis 3:8-10). That is what sin does - it separates us from the one who is not only "all-seeing" and "ever present" to us, but who is also "all loving" and "merciful" and eager to receive us with open arms of mercy, healing, and forgiveness. When God calls you to turn your gaze and attention towards him, do you try to hide yourself from his presence with other distractions and excuses that keep you from seeking him and listening to his voice?
The proof of God's love for us
Jesus went on to explain to people that if they could not recognize his voice when they heard his word, they would have the opportunity to recognize him when he is "lifted up" on the cross. Jesus pointed to the atoning sacrifice of his life on the cross as the true source of healing and victory over sin and reconciliation with God. The sacrifice of Jesus' life on the cross is the ultimate proof of God's love for us.
God so loved the world that he gave us his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16).
To fail to recognize who Jesus is and where he came from is to remain in darkness - the darkness of sin, ignorance, and unbelief. But if we look to Jesus and listen to his word of life and truth, then we will find the way to lasting peace and joy with God. The Lord Jesus invites each one of us to accept him as the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Our time here in this present world is very limited and short, but how we live it today has consequences not only for the present moment but for our eternal destiny as well. Which direction is your life headed in right now?
"Lord Jesus, you came to set us free from sin, doubt, fear, and ignorance. Your word brings life, truth, and healing to mind, heart, soul, and body. Let your healing love free me from the blindness of sin and disbelief and from the destructive force of evil and wrongdoing. May I always find peace, joy, and strength in knowing your merciful love, truth, and goddness."
