Reading 1
1 Thes 5:1-6, 9-11
Concerning times and seasons, brothers and sisters,
you have no need for anything to be written to you.
For you yourselves know very well
that the day of the Lord will come like a thief at night.
When people are saying, “Peace and security,”
then sudden disaster comes upon them,
like labor pains upon a pregnant woman,
and they will not escape.

But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness,
for that day to overtake you like a thief.
For all of you are children of the light
and children of the day.
We are not of the night or of darkness.
Therefore, let us not sleep as the rest do,
but let us stay alert and sober.
For God did not destine us for wrath,
but to gain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,
who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep
we may live together with him.
Therefore, encourage one another and build one another up,
as indeed you do.

Responsorial Psalm
Ps 27:1, 4, 13-14
R.  (13) I believe that I shall see the good things of the Lord in the land of the living.
The LORD is my light and my salvation;
whom should I fear?
The LORD is my life’s refuge;
of whom should I be afraid?
R. I believe that I shall see the good things of the Lord in the land of the living.
One thing I ask of the LORD;
this I seek:
To dwell in the house of the LORD
all the days of my life,
That I may gaze on the loveliness of the LORD
and contemplate his temple.
R. I believe that I shall see the good things of the Lord in the land of the living.
I believe that I shall see the bounty of the LORD
in the land of the living.
Wait for the LORD with courage;
be stouthearted, and wait for the LORD.
R. I believe that I shall see the good things of the Lord in the land of the living.

Gospel
Lk 4:31-37
Jesus went down to Capernaum, a town of Galilee.
He taught them on the sabbath,
and they were astonished at his teaching
because he spoke with authority.
In the synagogue there was a man with the spirit of an unclean demon,
and he cried out in a loud voice,
“What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth?
Have you come to destroy us?
I know who you are–the Holy one of God!”
Jesus rebuked him and said, “Be quiet! Come out of him!”
Then the demon threw the man down in front of them
and came out of him without doing him any harm.
They were all amazed and said to one another,
“What is there about his word?
For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits,
and they come out.”
And news of him spread everywhere in the surrounding region.

«They were astonished at the way He taught them, for his word was spoken with authority»

Fr. Joan BLADÉ i Piñol
(Barcelona, Spain)

Today, we can see how his teaching activity was Jesus' central mission of his public life. Jesus' preaching, however, was very different to others, and this surprised and amazed people. Despite the fact Jesus had not studied (cf. Jn 7:15), He, certainly, befuddled the Jews with his teachings, «for his word was spoken with authority» (Lk 4:32). His style of speech had the authority of he who knows He is the “Saint of God”.

It was precisely such authority in his speech that gave strength to his language. He used living and specific images, without any syllogisms or definitions; words and images He pulled out from the very nature or, more often than not, from the Holy Scriptures. Jesus was, no doubt, a good observer, a man close to human situations: while we can watch him teaching, we can also see him so close to people doing good to them (healing their sicknesses, driving out evil spirits, etc.). In the book of everyday life He read those experiences that, later on, He would use in his teachings. Despite this elementary and “basic” material, the Lord's word was always profound and perturbing, radically new and definite.

The greatest thing about Jesus Christ's speech was how He could combine his divine authority with the most incredible human simplicity. Both authority and simplicity were possible in Jesus thanks to his knowledge of the Father and his relation of amorous obedience with Him (cf. Mt 11:25-27). It is this especial relationship with the Father that explains that unique harmony between greatness and humility. The authority of his speech did not adjust to human parameters; there was no competition, no personal interest or glitter. It was the kind of authority manifested both by the sublimity of the word and its humility and simplicity. There was never in his lips any personal praise, haughtiness or shouting. Mansuetude, gentleness, understanding, peace, truth, light, justice..., this was the aroma surrounding the authority of his teachings.

It may not sound like it at first, but the closing part of the gospel reading is particularly challenging for us today: Jesus speaks and commands with authority and power. When we see flyers announcing lectures, we often read a listing of “credentials”: diplomas, experience, degrees... It is such cred-entials that are supposed to render the lecture cred-ible.

Jesus had neither degrees nor diplomas: what is there about his word? or in Nazareth: where did he learn all this?. Yet he spoke with authority: what he said came from his heart, from inner conviction ...not like the scribes. The scribes needed to quote their Torah, in order to be credible. Jesus did at times also quote Scripture, but he dared to move beyond its literal sense: you have heard... but I say to you... He was not authoritarian, he was authoritative.

His authority was not political clout or temple power, it was moral authority that came from his life witness: who among you can convict me of sin? When life witness is present, there is no need for external cred-entials. Beyond speaking with authority Jesus was living with authority. Pope Francis speaks with authority, because he lives with authority.

THE BAPTIZED "WAIT WITH JOYFUL HOPE"

"As regards specific times and moments, brothers, we do not need to write you; you know very well that the day of the Lord is coming like a thief in the night." 1 Thessalonians 5:1-2

We will be ready when Jesus returns if we:

  • are "children of light and of the day" (1 Thes 5:5),
  • do not belong to darkness or night (1 Thes 5:5),
  • are not "asleep like the rest, but awake and sober" (1 Thes 5:6; cf Eph 5:14), and
  • are "putting on faith and love as a breastplate and the hope of salvation as a helmet" (1 Thes 5:8; cf Eph 6:17).

In other words, we will be ready for Jesus' return if we are baptized into Jesus and faithfully living our Baptisms. The way to be ready for Jesus' coming at a future date is to be preoccupied with Jesus' presence now. If we love Jesus with all our hearts and souls (see Mk 12:30), we are ready for anything. Otherwise, we are not ready for the most important events of life.

Consequently, let us repent of our sins, go to Confession, and renew our Baptisms. Let us reject Satan, all his works, and all his empty promises. Let us believe boldly and joyfully in God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Those living their Baptisms spontaneously cry out Maranatha! "Come, Lord Jesus!" (Rv 22:20)

Prayer: Father, may I know and live the radical newness which comes from Baptism (Lay Members of Christ's Faithful People, Pope St. John Paul II, 10).
Promise: "They were spellbound by His teaching, for His words had authority." —Lk 4:32
Praise: With unswerving faith, Pope St. Gregory faced barbarian invasions and guided the Church in decadent times.

"His word was with authority and power"

When you listen to the word of God in Scripture how do you respond to it? Do you hear it with indifference, selective submission, or with the full assent of faith and obedience? When Jesus taught he spoke with authority. He spoke the word of God as no one had spoken it before. When the Rabbis taught they supported their statements with quotes from other authorities. The prophets spoke with delegated authority - Thus says the Lord. When Jesus spoke he needed no authorities to back his statements. He was authority incarnate - the Word of God made flesh. When he spoke, God spoke. When he commanded even the demons obeyed.

God's Word is alive and active
Cyril of Alexandria (376-444 AD), in his commentary on this passage from the Gospel of Luke, tells us that Jesus had all power and authority to heal every sickness and expel every demonic power because he was the living and active Word of God the Father (John 1:14 and Hebrews 4:12):

The bystanders, witnesses of such great deeds, were astonished at the power of his word. He performed his miracles, without offering up a prayer, asking no one else at all for the power to accomplish them. Since he is the living and active Word of God the Father, by whom all things exist, and in whom all things are, in his own person he crushed Satan and closed the profane mouth of impure demons. [Commentary on Luke, Homily 12].

God's Word has power to set us free
God's living and abiding Word is truth and life and it has power to set us free from every sin and oppression and bring us healing of body, mind, and spirit. If the demons, the fallen angels, were able to recognize the power and authority of Jesus, the Son of God, how much more should we recognize and believe in the power and authority of the Gospel - the good news of Jesus Christ, and entrust our lives to the Lord Jesus?

God's Word produces life and freedom for us
The Lord Jesus speaks his life-giving Word to us each and every day so that we may walk in the freedom of his love and truth. If we approach the Word of God with meekness and humility, and with an eagerness to do everything the Lord desires, we are in a much better position to learn what God wants to teach us through his word. Are you ready to follow the Lord Jesus and to conform your life according to his word?

"Lord Jesus, you have the words of everlasting life. May I never doubt your saving love and mercy, and the power of your word to bring healing, restoration, and freedom from every sin and oppression."

Psalm 27:1,4,13-14

1 The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?  The LORD is the stronghold of my life;  of whom shall I be afraid?
4 one thing have I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after;  that I may dwell in the house of the LORD  all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to inquire in his temple.
13 I believe that I shall see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living!
14 Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage;  yes, wait for the LORD!

Daily Quote from the early church fathers: New creation begins on the Sabbath, by Ambrose of Milan, 339-397 A.D.

"He describes the works of divine healing begun on the sabbath day, to show from the outset that the new creation began where the old creation ceased. He showed us that the Son of God is not under the law but above the law, and that the law will not be destroyed but fulfilled (Matthew 5:17). For the world was not made through the law but by the Word, as we read: 'By the Word of the Lord were the heavens established' (Psalm 33:6). Thus the law is not destroyed but fulfilled, so that the renewal of humankind, already in error, may occur. The apostle too says, 'Stripping yourselves of the old man, put on the new, who was created according to Christ' (Colossians 3:9-10, Ephesians 4:22,24). He fittingly began on the sabbath, that he may show himself as Creator. He completed the work that he had already begun by weaving together works with works.
