제1독서
요한 1서 4,7-16
7 사랑하는 여러분, 서로 사랑합시다.
사랑은 하느님에게서 오는 것이기 때문입니다.
사랑하는 이는 모두 하느님에게서 태어났으며 하느님을 압니다.
8 사랑하지 않는 사람은 하느님을 알지 못합니다.
하느님은 사랑이시기 때문입니다.
9 하느님의 사랑은 우리에게 이렇게 나타났습니다.
곧 하느님께서 당신의 외아드님을 세상에 보내시어
우리가 그분을 통하여 살게 해 주셨습니다.
10 그 사랑은 이렇습니다.
우리가 하느님을 사랑한 것이 아니라, 그분께서 우리를 사랑하시어
당신의 아드님을 우리 죄를 위한 속죄 제물로 보내 주신 것입니다.
11 사랑하는 여러분, 하느님께서 우리를 이렇게 사랑하셨으니
우리도 서로 사랑해야 합니다.
12 지금까지 하느님을 본 사람은 없습니다.
그러나 우리가 서로 사랑하면,
하느님께서 우리 안에 머무르시고
그분 사랑이 우리에게서 완성됩니다.
13 하느님께서는 우리에게 당신의 영을 나누어 주셨습니다.
우리는 이 사실로 우리가 그분 안에 머무르고
그분께서 우리 안에 머무르신다는 것을 압니다.
14 그리고 우리는 아버지께서 아드님을
세상의 구원자로 보내신 것을 보았고 또 증언합니다.
15 누구든지 예수님께서 하느님의 아드님이심을 고백하면,
하느님께서 그 사람 안에 머무르시고 그 사람도 하느님 안에 머무릅니다.
16 하느님께서 우리에게 베푸시는 사랑을
우리는 알게 되었고 또 믿게 되었습니다.
하느님은 사랑이십니다.
사랑 안에 머무르는 사람은 하느님 안에 머무르고
하느님께서도 그 사람 안에 머무르십니다.

요한이 전한 거룩한 복음입니다. 11,19-27
그때에 19 많은 유다인이 마르타와 마리아를
그 오빠 일 때문에 위로하러 와 있었다.
20 마르타는 예수님께서 오신다는 말을 듣고 그분을 맞으러 나가고,
마리아는 그냥 집에 앉아 있었다.
21 마르타가 예수님께 말하였다.
“주님, 주님께서 여기에 계셨더라면 제 오빠가 죽지 않았을 것입니다.
22 그러나 하느님께서는 주님께서 청하시는 것은
무엇이나 들어주신다는 것을 저는 지금도 알고 있습니다.”
23 예수님께서 마르타에게,
“네 오빠는 다시 살아날 것이다.” 하시니,
24 마르타가 “마지막 날 부활 때에
오빠도 다시 살아나리라는 것을 알고 있습니다.” 하였다.
25 그러자 예수님께서 그에게 이르셨다.
“나는 부활이요 생명이다. 나를 믿는 사람은 죽더라도 살고,
26 또 살아서 나를 믿는 모든 사람은 영원히 죽지 않을 것이다.
너는 이것을 믿느냐?”
27 마르타가 대답하였다.
“예, 주님! 저는 주님께서 이 세상에 오시기로 되어 있는 메시아시며
하느님의 아드님이심을 믿습니다.”

Ex 32:15-24, 30-34
Moses turned and came down the mountain
with the two tablets of the commandments in his hands,
tablets that were written on both sides, front and back;
tablets that were made by God,
having inscriptions on them that were engraved by God himself.
Now, when Joshua heard the noise of the people shouting,
he said to Moses, “That sounds like a battle in the camp.”
But Moses answered, “It does not sound like cries of victory,
nor does it sound like cries of defeat;
the sounds that I hear are cries of revelry.”
As he drew near the camp, he saw the calf and the dancing.
With that, Moses’ wrath flared up, so that he threw the tablets down
and broke them on the base of the mountain.
Taking the calf they had made, he fused it in the fire
and then ground it down to powder,
which he scattered on the water and made the children of Israel drink.
Moses asked Aaron, “What did this people ever do to you
that you should lead them into so grave a sin?”
Aaron replied, “Let not my lord be angry.
You know well enough how prone the people are to evil.
They said to me, 'Make us a god to be our leader;
as for the man Moses who brought us out of the land of Egypt ,
we do not know what has happened to him.’
So I told them, 'Let anyone who has gold jewelry take it off.’
They gave it to me, and I threw it into the fire, and this calf came out.”
On the next day Moses said to the people,
“You have committed a grave sin.
I will go up to the LORD, then;
perhaps I may be able to make atonement for your sin.”
So Moses went back to the LORD and said,
“Ah, this people has indeed committed a grave sin
in making a god of gold for themselves!
If you would only forgive their sin!
If you will not, then strike me out of the book that you have written.”
The LORD answered, “Him only who has sinned against me
will I strike out of my book.
Now, go and lead the people to the place I have told you.
My angel will go before you.
When it is time for me to punish, I will punish them for their sin.”

God will give you.”

“Your brother will rise.”
Martha said to him,
“I know he will rise,
in the resurrection on the last day.”
Jesus told her,
“I am the resurrection and the life;
whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live,
and anyone who lives and believes in me will never die.
Do you believe this?”
She said to him, “Yes, Lord.
I have come to believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God,
the one who is coming into the world.”

Jesus entered a villagewhere a woman whose name was Martha welcomed him.
She had a sister named Mary
who sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak.
Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said,
“Lord, do you not care
that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving?
Tell her to help me.”
The Lord said to her in reply,
“Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things.
There is need of only one thing.
Mary has chosen the better part
and it will not be taken from her.”

«You worry and are troubled about many things, whereas only one thing is needed»

Today, we, —no matter how busy we may be, at times, by so many things— must also listen to our Lord reminding us that «only one thing is needed» (Lk 10:42): esteem and saintliness. They should be our aim, the horizon we must never lose sight of amidst our daily chores.
Because we shall be “busy” if we follow our Creator’s plan: «’Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it’» (Gen 1:28). The earth! the world!: this is our meeting point with the Lord. «My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one» (Jn 17:15). Yes, the world is an “altar” for us and for our donation to God and to the others.
We belong in this world, but that does not mean we have to be worldly. on the contrary, we are called to become —in a beautiful expression of His Holiness John Paul II— “Priests of Creation!” “priests” of our world, of a world we passionately love.
Here is the question: world and saintliness; our daily chores and the one and only thing we truly need. They are not two opposed realities: and we have to try to make both coincide. And this coincidence must be carried out —in the first place and basically— in our own heart, where heaven and earth can be reunited. Because in the human heart is where the dialogue between Creator and creature takes place.
Therefore, prayer is necessary. «Ours is a time of continual movement which often leads to restlessness, with the risk of “doing for the sake of doing”. We must resist this temptation by trying “to be” before trying "to do". In this regard we should recall how Jesus reproved Martha: ‘You are anxious and troubled about many things; one thing is needful’ (Lk 10:41-42)» (John Paul II).
There is no opposition between “to be” and “to do”, but there is indeed a priority order of precedence: «Mary has chosen the better part, and it will not be taken away from her» (Lk 10,42).

I’m a Mary, not a Martha. I’m not a good cook or housekeeper or hostess. My husband was a much better wife than I was. He was an amazing cook, he kept the house and the yard, and he was an excellent host. If Jesus had come to visit us, Gordi would have offered a beverage and served a delicious meal, and I would have sat in the living room with our Lord. It wouldn’t even occur to me to serve.
The night before Gordi died his sister came over for a visit, and I was fine with that, until he said she wanted to help out and clean. And then I got upset. I said, just let her come and sit and talk to you. Don't let her clean. What she's saying is that I’m not a good wife. I can't clean, and I can't take care of you. I can't heal you. Your family thinks I’m a bad wife and they have to come and take care of you. He said, my sister just wants to do something. She wants to feel helpful and this makes her feel like she's helping. She wanted to be a Martha and I was trying to make her a Mary.
I understand the feminist theory of the gospel story and the women are doing the serving and the men sit and talk. And I even grew up with that tradition, although obviously it didn’t stick with me. Martha would like to be able to sit and enjoy Jesus and listen to him, but there is work to be done and it needs to be done. Someone has to offer the refreshing beverages. Someone has to cook and serve the food. It’s not going to serve itself. And here she is with an important guest and her sister is no help. And in my story while I was feeling inadequate caring for my dying husband, I also wanted his sister to have quality time with her dying brother. I wanted her to have the time and ability to connect with him while there was still time, and not to waste that time cleaning the kitchen counters. And when Martha tells Jesus to tell Mary to help out, he says that the quality time she is spending with him is more valuable than the serving work in the kitchen. He says, “Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her.” A clean house is a good thing. A host who provides good food for guests is good, but the host who provides sincere attention to guests might be better. Martha is making sure the required preparations are made, but Mary is spending the more quality time with Jesus while there is still time.

WHO GOES FIRST? | ||

Martha is a great saint because she accepted Jesus' correction. Jesus corrected Martha not because she was too busy, anxious, or critical. Jesus corrected Martha because she was only a worker for the Lord and not a disciple of the Lord. A mere worker sets the agenda. A disciple sits at the feet of Jesus, prays each morning for the Lord to open his ear (Is 50:4), and then takes orders from his Lord. A worker can feel anxious and upset because he's in charge of his life and work (see Lk 10:41). A disciple is at rest, for Jesus' yoke is easy and His burden light (Mt 11:30). A person who works for the Lord but isn't His disciple prays for God's help, while a disciple prays to help God. A mere worker for the Lord initiates activity, but a disciple doesn't move until the Lord moves (see Ex 40:37; Ps 123:2). With Jesus, we as disciples do nothing by ourselves but only what we see the Father doing (Jn 5:19). The Lord wants more than workers for the harvest (see Mt 9:37); He wants disciples of all nations (Mt 28:19). Don't just invite Jesus into your life; rather, be a disciple and lose your life in Him (see Lk 9:23-24). | ||

Praise: St. Martha made one of the greatest professions of faith: "I have come to believe that You are the Messiah, the Son of God: He Who is to come into the world" (Jn 11:27). |

Martha said to Jesus, "I know he will rise again"
What gives us hope and joy in the face of death? The loss of a loved one naturally produces grief and anguish of heart. When Martha, the sister of Lazarus and a close friend of Jesus, heard that Jesus was coming to pay respects for the loss of Lazarus, she immediately went out to meet him before he could get to her house. What impelled her to leave the funeral party in order to seek Jesus out? Was it simply the companionship and consolation of a friend who loved her brother deeply? Or did she recognize in Jesus the hope that God would restore life?
Jesus strengthens us in faith and hope
Martha, like many Orthodox Jews, believed in the life to come. The loss of her brother did not diminish her hope in the resurrection. She even gently chides Jesus for not coming soon enough to save Lazarus from an untimely death. Jesus does something unexpected and remarkable both to strengthen her faith and hope in the life to come and to give her a sign of what he was to accomplish through his own death and resurrection. Jesus gave to her belief a new and profound meaning: He came from the Father to defeat sin and death for us and to restore life to those who believe in him.
Jesus gives abundant life now and forever
Jesus states unequivocally the he himself is the Resurrection and the Life. The life he offers is abundant life - life which issues from God himself. And everlasting life - the fullness of life which knows no end. Do you seek the abundant life which Jesus offers to those who believe in him?
"Lord Jesus, you are the Resurrection and the Life. Strengthen my faith and hope in your promises that I may radiate the joy of the Gospel to others."
