제1독서
탈출기. 24,3-8

Reading 1
Ex 24:3-8
When Moses came to the people
and related all the words and ordinances of the LORD,
they all answered with one voice,
“We will do everything that the LORD has told us.”
Moses then wrote down all the words of the LORD and,
rising early the next day,
he erected at the foot of the mountain an altar
and twelve pillars for the twelve tribes of Israel.
Then, having sent certain young men of the children of Israel
to offer burnt offerings and sacrifice young bulls
as peace offerings to the LORD,
Moses took half of the blood and put it in large bowls;
the other half he splashed on the altar.
Taking the book of the covenant, he read it aloud to the people,
who answered, “All that the LORD has said, we will heed and do.”
Then he took the blood and sprinkled it on the people, saying,
“This is the blood of the covenant
that the LORD has made with you
in accordance with all these words of his.”
Responsorial Psalm
R. (14a) Offer to God a sacrifice of praise.
God the LORD has spoken and summoned the earth,
from the rising of the sun to its setting.
From Zion, perfect in beauty,
God shines forth.
R. Offer to God a sacrifice of praise.
“Gather my faithful ones before me,
those who have made a covenant with me by sacrifice.”
And the heavens proclaim his justice;
for God himself is the judge.
R. Offer to God a sacrifice of praise.
“Offer to God praise as your sacrifice
and fulfill your vows to the Most High;
Then call upon me in time of distress;
I will rescue you, and you shall glorify me.”
R. Offer to God a sacrifice of praise.
Gospel
Jesus proposed a parable to the crowds.
“The Kingdom of heaven may be likened to a man
who sowed good seed in his field.
While everyone was asleep his enemy came
and sowed weeds all through the wheat, and then went off.
When the crop grew and bore fruit, the weeds appeared as well.
The slaves of the householder came to him and said,
‘Master, did you not sow good seed in your field?
Where have the weeds come from?’
He answered, ‘An enemy has done this.’
His slaves said to him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?’
He replied, ‘No, if you pull up the weeds
you might uproot the wheat along with them.
Let them grow together until harvest;
then at harvest time I will say to the harvesters,
“First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles for burning;
but gather the wheat into my barn.”

«Let them just grow together»
Fr. Manuel SÁNCHEZ Sánchez
(Sevilla, Spain)
Today, we shall ponder over a parable referring to community living, where good and evil, Gospel and sin, constantly get mixed up. Settling this situation as the servant suggests would seem the logical approach: «Do you want us to go and pull up the weeds?’» (Mt 13:28). But God's patience is infinite, and He waits until the very last moment —as a good father would— for the possibility of a change: «Let them just grow together until harvest» (Mt 13:30).
An ambiguous and mediocre reality, perhaps, but that is where God's Kingdom grows. It has to do with the feeling of being called to discover the signals of the Kingdom of God so we can boost it, while we are trying to avoid whatever conforms us into mediocrity. However, living in that mixture of good and evil should not hinder nor hamper the advance of our spiritual life; for, otherwise, we should be transforming our wheat into weeds. «Sir, was it not good seed that you sowed in your field? Where did the weeds come from?» (Mt 13:27). It is not possible to grow in any other way, nor can we look for the Kingdom anywhere else than simply in this society we are given to live in. Our task will be to make the Kingdom of God grow in it.
The Gospel invites us not to grant any credit to the “pure”, to overcome the existing aspects of puritanism and bigotry of the Christian community. In all collectivities, no matter how healthy they are meant to be, it is easy to find this kind of attitude. Leaning on ideals, we all feel tempted to think we are the lucky ones that have already achieved perfection, while the rest is still far from it. Yet, Jesus proves that all of us, without exception, are still on our way.
Let us, therefore, be on the alert to prevent the devil to sneak up on us, which is what normally happens when we conform ourselves too much to this world. St. Angela of the Cross said, «we are not to listen to the voices of the world saying there are who do this or that; we stick to our own way, without inventing any variations, and always following our way of doing those things, which are like hidden treasures; for they will open the gates of Heaven for us». Let the Mother of God help us conforming only to love.

This passage from Exodus is generally considered to be the primary and essential passage describing the formal ratification of the children of Abraham's covenant with the Lord, and it is critical to our understanding of the words of consecration in the Eucharist.
Here Moses takes half of the blood of the young bulls and splashes it on the altar with the 12 pillars (representing the 12 tribes) and then reads aloud the “book of the covenant” and asks the people to commit themselves to it as their side of the covenant. When they have done so, Moses splashes what remains of the blood on them, binding them to the Lord (symbolized by the altar) by that blood.
It is important to understand that for the Jews blood was the seat of life and, to a certain extent, identity: under no circumstances whatsoever might anyone drink it or eat meat with the blood still in it. All blood was sacred, and it had to be returned to the Lord by pouring it into the ground.
All of that comes into play in the words of consecration over the wine, where the celebrant says “Take this, all of you, and drink from it, for this is the chalice of My Blood, the Blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of Me.”
These words are an amalgam of the critical words and ideas of four passages in the New Testament: Jesus says “Drink from it, all of you, for this is My Blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins” (Matthew 26:27-28), “This is My Blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many” (Mark 14:24), “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in My Blood” (Luke 22:19), and “This cup is the new covenant in My Blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me” (I Corinthians 11:25).
This renewed and final covenant is not in the blood of animals but in the blood of God Himself; the God-man Jesus, in His life climaxing in His death, binds humanity to God in a way that breaks down all barriers between us and God: He is now our God and we are His people --- if we do our best to follow that Law of Love that Jesus completed the written Law with. How close will that bond be? Consider the last 2-3 chapters of the Book of Revelation...

"His slaves said to him, 'Do you want us to go out and pull them up?' " Matthew 13:28
In His kingdom, God lets the wheat and weeds grow together. He doesn't pull weeds until they die or He comes again (Mt 13:30, 40). He delays in pulling weeds so that they might change and become wheat. However, it's possible that, while waiting for the weeds to turn into wheat, the wheat may turn into weeds. Therefore, "be solicitous to make your call and election permanent" (2 Pt 1:10). "After beginning in the Spirit, are you now to end in the flesh?" (Gal 3:3) "It was for liberty that Christ freed us. So stand firm, and do not take on yourselves the yoke of slavery a second time!" (Gal 5:1) We must not become lukewarm (Rv 3:16) and turn away from our first love (Rv 2:4). "Let anyone who thinks he is standing upright watch out lest he fall!" (1 Cor 10:12) "When men have fled a polluted world by recognizing the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and then are caught up and overcome in pollution once more, their last condition is worse than their first. It would have been better for them not to have recognized the road to holiness than to have turned their backs on the holy law" (2 Pt 2:20-21). The Lord graces us to become free and stay free through His "holy law" (2 Pt 2:21), that is, His Word. The truth of God's Word frees us (see Jn 8:32). "The law of the Spirit, the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus, has freed you from the law of sin and death" (Rm 8:2). Look "into freedom's ideal law and [abide] by it" (Jas 1:25). Abide in God's law, Word, and truth (see Jn 8:31-32). Stay free.
Prayer: Father, make me free always and forever.
Promise: "We will do everything that the Lord has told us." —Ex 24:3
Praise: Miraculously, instantaneously Jesus set John free from years of addiction. |

Guarding the good seed of God's word in our heart
What can malicious weed-sowing tell us about the kingdom of God? The image Jesus uses here is a common everyday example of planting, harvesting, and sorting the good fruit from the bad. Weeds can spoil and even kill a good harvest if they are not separated and destroyed at the proper time. Uprooting them too early, though, can destroy the good plants in the process.
Guard God's implanted word in your heart
Just as nature teaches us patience, so God's patience also teaches us to guard the word which he has planted in our hearts and to beware of the destructive force of sin and deception which can destroy it. God's word brings life, but Satan, the father of lies, seeks to destroy the good seed which God plants in the hearts of those who listen to his word.
God's judgment is not hasty, but it does come. And in the end, God will reward each person according to what he or she has sown and reaped in this life. In that day God will separate the evil from the good. Do you allow God's word to take deep root in your heart?
"Lord Jesus, may your word take deep root in my heart and may I bear good fruit for your glory. May I hunger for your righteousness now that I may also look forward to the day of judgment with joy rather than with dismay."
Psalm 50:1-5, 23
1 The Mighty one, God the LORD, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting.
2 Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines forth.
3 Our God comes, he does not keep silence, before him is a devouring fire, round about him a mighty tempest.
4 He calls to the heavens above and to the earth, that he may judge his people:
14 Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving, and pay your vows to the Most High;
15 and call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me."
Daily Quote from the early church fathers: The Lord sows good seeds in our heart, by Chromatius (died 406 AD)
"The Lord clearly points out that he is the sower of good seeds. He does not cease to sow in this world as in a field. God’s word is like good seed in the hearts of people, so that each of us according to the seeds sown in us by God may bear spiritual and heavenly fruit." (excerpt from TRACTATE on MATTHEW 51.1)
[Note: Chromatius was an early Christian scholar and bishop of Aquileia, Italy. He was a close friend of John Chrysostom and Jerome. He died in 406 AD. Jerome
described him as a "most learned and most holy man."]
