Reading 1

Sir 1:1-10

All wisdom comes from the LORD

and with him it remains forever, and is before all time

The sand of the seashore, the drops of rain,

the days of eternity: who can number these?

Heaven’s height, earth’s breadth,

the depths of the abyss: who can explore these?

Before all things else wisdom was created;

and prudent understanding, from eternity.

The word of God on high is the fountain of wisdom

and her ways are everlasting.

To whom has wisdom’s root been revealed?

Who knows her subtleties?

To whom has the discipline of wisdom been revealed?

And who has understood the multiplicity of her ways ?

There is but one, wise and truly awe-inspiring,

seated upon his throne:

There is but one, Most High

all-powerful creator-king and truly awe-inspiring one,

seated upon his throne and he is the God of dominion.

It is the LORD; he created her through the Holy Spirit,

has seen her and taken note of her.

He has poured her forth upon all his works,

upon every living thing according to his bounty;

he has lavished her upon his friends.

Responsorial Psalm

Ps 93:1ab, 1cd-2, 5

R. (1a) The Lord is king; he is robed in majesty.

The LORD is king, in splendor robed;

robed is the LORD and girt about with strength.

R. The Lord is king; he is robed in majesty.

And he has made the world firm,

not to be moved.

Your throne stands firm from of old;

from everlasting you are, O LORD.

R. The Lord is king; he is robed in majesty.

Your decrees are worthy of trust indeed:

holiness befits your house,

O LORD, for length of days.

R. The Lord is king; he is robed in majesty.

Gospel

Mk 9:14-29

As Jesus came down from the mountain with Peter, James, John

and approached the other disciples,

they saw a large crowd around them and scribes arguing with them.

Immediately on seeing him,

the whole crowd was utterly amazed.

They ran up to him and greeted him.

He asked them, “What are you arguing about with them?”

Someone from the crowd answered him,

“Teacher, I have brought to you my son possessed by a mute spirit.

Wherever it seizes him, it throws him down;

he foams at the mouth, grinds his teeth, and becomes rigid.

I asked your disciples to drive it out, but they were unable to do so.”

He said to them in reply,

“O faithless generation, how long will I be with you?

How long will I endure you? Bring him to me.”

They brought the boy to him.

And when he saw him,

the spirit immediately threw the boy into convulsions.

As he fell to the ground, he began to roll around

and foam at the mouth.

Then he questioned his father,

“How long has this been happening to him?”

He replied, “Since childhood.

It has often thrown him into fire and into water to kill him.

But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.”

Jesus said to him,

“‘If you can!’ Everything is possible to one who has faith.”

Then the boy’s father cried out, “I do believe, help my unbelief!”

Jesus, on seeing a crowd rapidly gathering,

rebuked the unclean spirit and said to it,

“Mute and deaf spirit, I command you:

come out of him and never enter him again!”

Shouting and throwing the boy into convulsions, it came out.

He became like a corpse, which caused many to say, “He is dead!”

But Jesus took him by the hand, raised him, and he stood up.

When he entered the house, his disciples asked him in private,

“Why could we not drive the spirit out?”

He said to them, “This kind can only come out through prayer.”

The word of God on High is the fountain of wisdom, and her ways are everlasting…

Do we thirst for this wisdom from the fountain of God’s word? Do we drink from it when we hear God’s word, and the WORD made flesh when Jesus speaks? What do we hear in the Gospels as we hear it proclaimed or hold it in our hearts to ponder?

Or do we hear God’s word calling out to us through creation? For wisdom existed before all things were created. She lives in our world and in the depths of the universe. What do you hear when you see the new images from the James Webb telescope? The Wisdom of God calls out from the cosmos. I am Beauty! I am Mystery! I am Beyond Comprehension! I am eternity! I am the Alpha and the Omega!

God has poured her, Wisdom, forth upon all! Upon every living thing and lavished her upon us! Friends of God!

Jesus and his friends, come down from the mountain. Today’s Gospel passage immediately follows the experience of the Transfiguration. Peter, James, and John have experienced the mystery of Jesus and heard God’s voice. Now, people in town seek Jesus to heal a lad stricken by a demon. It was quite powerful too! So much so the disciples could not cast it out of the boy. Jesus replies when asked why they were unable to do so, he replied, This kind can only come out through prayer.

Our first reading reminds us of how all of creation is a living prayer of God’s dwelling spirit of Wisdom. Our Gospel tells us to remember this. We must be in communication with Wisdom who is Spirit, with Jesus. We must pray. We must believe in the power of prayer as we become a living prayer. We must believe in the power of prayer to be with us in times of suffering and encounters with evil forces within our world. Believe in God’s loving communication through each of us.

Wisdom speaks. The Spirit of God is alive and well within each of us. As we move toward Lent, I urge us to be with Wisdom. Listen to God’s voice as the disciples heard on Mt. Tabor. This is my son, Jesus, Listen to him! Yes, listen. Talk with Jesus.

You too will come to know the discipline of wisdom revealed, understand her ways and subtleties through Jesus.

Wisdom will reveal to you the power of God’s Word!

Pray.

Drink from the fountain of God!

DISTRESS MANAGEMENT

Jesus “replied by saying to the crowd, ‘What an unbelieving lot you are! How long must I remain with you? How long can I endure you?’ ” —Mark 9:19

A lack of faith distresses Jesus (Mk 6:6). Jesus came into the midst of a crowd which lacked faith and expressed His exasperation quite openly (Mk 9:19, 23). Many of us are surrounded by crowds of people who lack faith. What is our comfort level in these crowds? Does it likewise distress us that people live lives lacking in faith? What kind of words do we speak when in the presence of a lack of faith? Do we say:

  • “I understand your financial problems. I agree, you really should use birth control.”
  • “It must be awful living with such a wife. I agree, you really should leave her.”
  • “I know you are fed up with the Church. I agree, you really should get away from those people.”

Or are we distressed by a lack of faith and speak as Jesus did?

  • “Trust in God. He will provide for your large family” (see Phil 4:19).
  • “God will give you the grace to love your spouse more deeply. Be faithful to your vows” (see Mt 19:6, 26).
  • “Do not leave the Church. Believe that Jesus is working powerfully in the Church” (see Heb 10:25; Eph 1:22).

After Jesus expressed His exasperation in today’s Gospel reading, He challenged the father’s faith (Mk 9:23), raised the father’s level of faith (Mk 9:24), and then taught His disciples to expel demons by prayer and fasting (Mk 9:29; Mt 17:21, NAB). Are you distressed by a lack of faith enough to pray, fast, and speak as Jesus did? “Your attitude must be that of Christ” (Phil 2:5).

Prayer: Father, give me the mind of Christ (1 Cor 2:16).

Promise: “Fear of the Lord warms the heart.” —Sir 1:10

What kind of faith does the Lord Jesus expect of us, especially when we meet challenges and difficulties? Inevitably there will be times when each of us cause disappointment to others. In this Gospel incident the disciples of Jesus brought disappointment to a pleading father because they failed to heal his epileptic son. Jesus' response seemed stern; but it was really tempered with love and compassion. We see at once both Jesus' dismay with the disciples' lack of faith and his concern to meet the need of this troubled boy and his anguished father. Jesus recognized the weakness of the father's faith and at the same time challenged him to pray boldly with expectant faith: "All things are possible to him who believes!"

Prayer and faith go together

Augustine of Hippo (354-430 AD), in his commentary on this passage, reminds us that prayer and faith go together: "Where faith fails, prayer perishes. For who prays for that in which he does not believe? ..So then in order that we may pray, let us believe, and let us pray that this same faith by which we pray may not falter." The Lord gives us his Holy Spirit that we may have the confidence and boldness we need to ask our heavenly Father for his help and grace. Do you trust in God's love and care for you and pray with expectant faith that he will give you what you need?

When Jesus rebuked the evil spirit, the boy at first seemed to get worse rather than better as he went into a fit of convulsion. Peter Chrysologus (400-450 AD), a renowned preacher and bishop of Ravena, reflects on this incident:

"Though it was the boy who fell on the ground, it was the devil in him who was in anguish. The possessed boy was merely convulsed, while the usurping spirit was being convicted by the awesome judge. The captive was detained, but the captor was punished. Through the wrenching of the human body, the punishment of the devil was made manifest."

God promises each one of us freedom from oppression, especially from the oppression of sin and the evil one who tries to rob us of faith, hope, and peace with God. The Lord Jesus invites us, as he did this boy's father, to pray with expectant faith. Do you trust in God's unfailing love and mercy?

Faith and trust in God's unfailing love and mercy

The mighty works and signs which Jesus did demonstrate that the kingdom of God is present in him. These signs attest that the Father has sent him as the promised Messiah. They invite belief in Jesus as the Son of God and Savior of the world. The coming of God's kingdom means defeat of Satan's kingdom. Jesus' exorcisms anticipate his great victory over "the ruler of this world" (John 12:31). While Satan may act in the world out of hatred for God and his kingdom in Christ Jesus, and may cause grave injuries of a spiritual nature, and indirectly even of a physical nature, his power is nonetheless limited and permitted by divine providence (Romans 8:28). Jesus offers freedom from bondage to sin and Satan. There is no affliction he cannot deliver us from. Do you make full use of the protection and help he offers to those who seek him with faith and trust in his mercy?

Lord Jesus, help my unbelief! Increase my faith and trust in your saving power. Give me confidence and perseverance, especially in prayer. And help me to bring your healing love and truth to those I meet

Psalm 19:8-10, 14

8 The precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes;

9 the fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever; the ordinances of the LORD are true, and righteous altogether.

10 More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.

14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.

Daily Quote from the Early Church Fathers: Emerging faith seeks maturity, by Augustine of Hippo, 354-430 A.D.

"In saying, 'When the Son of Man shall come, shall he find faith upon the earth?' our Lord spoke of that faith which is fully matured, which is so seldom found on earth. The church's faith is full, for who would come here if there were no fullness of faith? And whose faith when fully matured would not move mountains (Matthew 17:20; 21:22)? Look at the apostles themselves, who would not have left all they had, trodden under foot this world's hope, and followed the Lord, if they had not had proportionally great faith. And yet if they had already experienced a completely matured faith, they would have not said to the Lord, 'Increase our faith' (Luke 17:5). Rather we find here an emerging faith, which is not yet full faith, in that father who when he had presented to the Lord his son to be cured of an evil spirit and was asked whether he believed, answered, 'Lord, I believe, help me in my unbelief' (Mark 9:24). 'Lord,' says he, 'I believe.' 'I believe': therefore there was faith; but 'help me in my unbelief': therefore there was not full faith (Hebrews 10:22)."
