창세기.6,5-8; 7,1-5.10
5 주님께서는 사람들의 악이 세상에 많아지고,
그들 마음의 모든 생각과 뜻이 언제나 악하기만 한 것을 보시고,
6 세상에 사람을 만드신 것을 후회하시며 마음 아파하셨다.
7 그래서 주님께서 말씀하셨다.
“내가 창조한 사람들을 이 땅 위에서 쓸어버리겠다.
사람뿐 아니라 짐승과 기어 다니는 것들과 하늘의 새들까지 쓸어버리겠다.
내가 그것들을 만든 것이 후회스럽구나!”
8 그러나 노아만은 주님의 눈에 들었다.
7,1 주님께서 노아에게 말씀하셨다. “너는 네 가족들과 함께 방주로 들어가거라.
내가 보니 이 세대에 내 앞에서 의로운 사람은 너밖에 없구나.
2 정결한 짐승은 모두 수놈과 암놈으로 일곱 쌍씩,
부정한 짐승은 수놈과 암놈으로 한 쌍씩 데려가거라.
3 하늘의 새들도 수컷과 암컷으로 일곱 쌍씩 데리고 가서,
그 씨가 온 땅 위에 살아남게 하여라.
4 이제 이레가 지나면, 내가 사십 일 동안 밤낮으로 땅에 비를 내려,
내가 만든 생물을 땅에서 모두 쓸어버리겠다.”
5 노아는 주님께서 명령하신 대로 다 하였다.

그들이 가진 빵이 배 안에는 한 개밖에 없었다.
15 예수님께서 그들에게, “너희는 주의하여라.
바리사이들의 누룩과 헤로데의 누룩을 조심하여라.” 하고 분부하셨다.
16 그러자 제자들은 자기들에게 빵이 없다고 서로 수군거렸다.
17 예수님께서는 그것을 아시고 그들에게 말씀하셨다.
“너희는 어찌하여 빵이 없다고 수군거리느냐?
아직도 이해하지 못하고 깨닫지 못하느냐? 너희 마음이 그렇게도 완고하냐?
18 너희는 눈이 있어도 보지 못하고 귀가 있어도 듣지 못하느냐?
너희는 기억하지 못하느냐?
19 내가 빵 다섯 개를 오천 명에게 떼어 주었을 때,
빵 조각을 몇 광주리나 가득 거두었느냐?”
그들이 “열둘입니다.” 하고 대답하였다.
20 “빵 일곱 개를 사천 명에게 떼어 주었을 때에는,
빵 조각을 몇 바구니나 가득 거두었느냐?”그들이 “일곱입니다.” 하고 대답하자,
21 예수님께서 그들에게 말씀하셨다. “너희는 아직도 깨닫지 못하느냐?”

Reading 1
When the LORD saw how great was man’s wickedness on earth,
and how no desire that his heart conceived
was ever anything but evil,
he regretted that he had made man on the earth,
and his heart was grieved.
So the LORD said:
“I will wipe out from the earth the men whom I have created,
and not only the men,
but also the beasts and the creeping things and the birds of the air,
for I am sorry that I made them.”
But Noah found favor with the LORD.
Then the LORD said to Noah:
“Go into the ark, you and all your household,
for you alone in this age have I found to be truly just.
Of every clean animal, take with you seven pairs,
a male and its mate;
and of the unclean animals, one pair,
a male and its mate;
likewise, of every clean bird of the air, seven pairs,
a male and a female,
and of all the unclean birds, one pair,
a male and a female.
Thus you will keep their issue alive over all the earth.
Seven days from now I will bring rain down on the earth
for forty days and forty nights,
and so I will wipe out from the surface of the earth
every moving creature that I have made.”
Noah did just as the LORD had commanded him.
As soon as the seven days were over,
the waters of the flood came upon the earth.

The disciples had forgotten to bring bread,
and they had only one loaf with them in the boat.
Jesus enjoined them, “Watch out,
guard against the leaven of the Pharisees
and the leaven of Herod.”
They concluded among themselves that
it was because they had no bread.
When he became aware of this he said to them,
“Why do you conclude that it is because you have no bread?
Do you not yet understand or comprehend?
Are your hearts hardened?
Do you have eyes and not see, ears and not hear?
And do you not remember,
when I broke the five loaves for the five thousand,
how many wicker baskets full of fragments you picked up?”
They answered him, “Twelve.”
“When I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand,
how many full baskets of fragments did you pick up?”
They answered him, “Seven.”
He said to them, “Do you still not understand?”

Today’s first reading and Gospel speak to me of how God, and faith in God, can pierce through the messiness of life.
There has always been sin on the part of humans – gluttony, cruelty, greed, lust, and much more – but the age at the time of Genesis 6 was particularly vexing, according to the writer. The people were so evil that God was ready to chuck it all. To throw the baby out with the bathwater. To wipe out the whole of creation.
But because one person (Noah) and his family were just, humanity and the world's creatures got a second chance.
That’s how much God values acting justly. So, when we are weary and burdened by the messiness of our own sinfulness, mistakes and lack of concern for others, we can have faith that God gives second chances. Jesus' whole mission was a huge second chance for us. We can remember that one person acting justly is enough to change the course of history. So, let us take stock of ourselves and act justly.
The conversation in the boat in the Gospel greatly amuses me. Again, the messiness of life. The disciples relished in that mess – worrying about where their next meal is coming from, who forgot to bring bread, why did they forget to bring bread – and Jesus lived there in the messiness right along with them.
But he encouraged them to rise above it, to see the bigger picture, the true meaning and value in their (our) lives and in the people we meet. Even though the disciples were constantly bickering and trying to one-up each other, Jesus still loved them, still taught them, still died for them, just as he does for each of us.

SPIRITUAL BLINDNESS
“Are your minds completely blinded? Have you eyes but no sight?” —Mark 8:17-18
Jesus was appalled at His disciples’ spiritual blindness. They were blinded to the significance of the two multiplications of the loaves and fishes. They were blinded to Who Jesus was. This blindness would eventually lead His disciples to abandon Jesus on Calvary.
Spiritual blindness caused Jesus’ death on the cross. It caused the Third Reich, the Holocaust of six million Jews, slavery for centuries, and countless other atrocities. Spiritual blindness causes starvation, racism, the sexual abuse of children, mass murder from abortion, etc.
Spiritual blindness is caused by the god of the present age (2 Cor 4:4) and by our complicity with the evils of this god of selfishness and secular humanism. Spiritual blindness is caused by sin. The darkness of sin blinds us (1 Jn 2:11), blinds us to being blind (Jn 9:40), and causes us to blind ourselves (see Is 29:9). Whole nations, cities, and even churches (see Rv 3:17) can become spiritually blind.
Jesus has divided the world into two groups — those going blind and those receiving sight (Jn 9:39). Repent, go to Confession, and let Jesus heal you of blindness.
Prayer: Father, through my monthly celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, restore my sight and keep me from going spiritually blind.
Promise: “Noah found favor with the Lord.” —Gn 6:8
Praise: Sts. Cyril & Methodius, the apostles to the Slavs, spread the Good News to Poland, Bohemia, Russia and Bulgaria.

Do you allow anxiety or fear to keep you from trusting in God's provision for your life? The apostles worried because they forgot to bring bread for their journey. And that was right after Jesus miraculously fed a group of five thousand people (Mark 6:41-44, Matthew 14:17-21), and then on another occasion four thousand people (Mark 8:1-10, Matthew 15:34-38)! How easy it is to forget what God has already done for us and to doubt what he promises to do for us in the future as well. Scripture tells us that "perfect love casts out fear" (1 John 4:18). Ask the Lord Jesus to fill your heart with his love and to increase your faith in his provident care for you.
Beware the "leaven" which corrupts mind, body, and soul
Jesus cautioned the disciples to beware of bread that corrupts, such as the "leaven of the Pharisees." When leaven ferments a lump of wet dough, it transforms the dough and changes it into life-enriching bread when heated. Left-over dough which had been leavened (but not baked) would rot and become putrified. For the Jew leaven was a sign or symbol of evil influence. It signified anything which rots and corrupts, not just physically but spiritually and morally as well.
Jesus warned his disciples to avoid the way of the Pharisees and Sadducees who sought their own counsels rather than the mind of God. They were blinded by their own arrogance and were unable to recognize the truth and wisdom which Jesus spoke in the name of his Father in heaven. What kind of leaven (spiritual, moral, intellectual) do you allow to influence your way of thinking and living? Jesus sharply contrasts the bread and leaven which produces life, especially the abundant life which God offers through Jesus, the true bread of heaven, with the bread and leaven which rots and corrupts mind, body, and soul.
Let God's word nourish and strengthen you in faith, hope, and love
As the disciples continued to worry about their lack of physical bread for the journey, Jesus reminded them of his miraculous provision of bread in the feeding of the five thousand and the four thousand. He then upbraided them for their lack of trust in God. Aren't we like the apostles? We too easily get preoccupied with the problems, needs, and worries of the present moment, and we forget the most important reality of all - God's abiding presence with us!
When the people of Israel wandered in the desert homeless and helpless for forty years, God was with them every step of the way. And he provided for them shelter, food, water, and provision, as long as they trusted in him. Each day he gave them just what they needed. Jesus teaches us to trust in God's abiding presence with us and in his promise to provide us what we need each and every day to live as his sons and daughters. Do you pray with joyful confidence, "Father, give us this day our daily bread"?
Lord Jesus, you alone are the true bread of life which sustains us each and every day. Give me joy and strength to serve you always and help me to turn away from the leaven of sin and worldliness which brings corruption and death.

The works of the law are now to be viewed in the light of faith. They are forewarned that they, into whose time and age the truth had appeared incarnate, should judge nothing except which lies within the position of hope in likeness of the truth that is revealed.
