제1독서
히브리서.5,1-10
1 모든 대사제는 사람들 가운데에서 뽑혀 사람들을 위하여
하느님을 섬기는 일을 하도록 지정된 사람입니다.
곧 죄 때문에 예물과 제물을 바치는 것입니다.
2 그는 자기도 약점을 짊어지고 있으므로,
무지하여 길을 벗어난 이들을 너그러이 대할 수 있습니다.
3 그리고 연약한 탓에 백성의 죄뿐만 아니라
자기의 죄 때문에도 제물을 바쳐야 합니다.
4 이 영예는 어느 누구도 스스로 얻는 것이 아니라,
아론과 같이 하느님에게서 부르심을 받아 얻는 것입니다.
5 이처럼 그리스도께서도 대사제가 되는 영광을 스스로 차지하신 것이 아니라,
그분께 “너는 내 아들. 내가 오늘 너를 낳았노라.” 하고
말씀하신 분께서 그렇게 해 주신 것입니다.
6 또 다른 곳에서 말씀하신 그대로입니다.
“너는 멜키체덱과 같이 영원한 사제다.”
7 예수님께서는 이 세상에 계실 때,
당신을 죽음에서 구하실 수 있는 분께 큰 소리로 부르짖고 눈물을 흘리며
기도와 탄원을 올리셨고, 하느님께서는 그 경외심 때문에 들어 주셨습니다.
8 예수님께서는 아드님이시지만 고난을 겪으심으로써 순종을 배우셨습니다.
9 그리고 완전하게 되신 뒤에는 당신께 순종하는
모든 이에게 영원한 구원의 근원이 되셨으며,
10 하느님에게서 멜키체덱과 같은 대사제로 임명되셨습니다.

마르코.2,18-22
그때에 18 요한의 제자들과 바리사이들이 단식하고 있었다.
사람들이 예수님께 와서,
“요한의 제자들과 바리사이의 제자들은 단식하는데,
선생님의 제자들은 어찌하여 단식하지 않습니까?” 하고 물었다.
19 예수님께서 그들에게 이르셨다.
“혼인 잔치 손님들이 신랑과 함께 있는 동안에 단식할 수야 없지 않으냐?
신랑이 함께 있는 동안에는 단식할 수 없다.
20 그러나 그들이 신랑을 빼앗길 날이 올 것이다. 그때에는 그들도 단식할 것이다.
21 아무도 새 천 조각을 헌 옷에 대고 깁지 않는다.
그렇게 하면 헌 옷에 기워 댄 새 헝겊에 그 옷이 땅겨 더 심하게 찢어진다.
22 또한 아무도 새 포도주를 헌 가죽 부대에 담지 않는다.
그렇게 하면 포도주가 부대를 터뜨려 포도주도 부대도 버리게 된다.
새 포도주는 새 부대에 담아야 한다.”

Brothers and sisters:
Every high priest is taken from among men
and made their representative before God,
to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins.
He is able to deal patiently with the ignorant and erring,
for he himself is beset by weakness
and so, for this reason, must make sin offerings for himself
as well as for the people.
No one takes this honor upon himself
but only when called by God,
just as Aaron was.
In the same way,
it was not Christ who glorified himself in becoming high priest,
but rather the one who said to him:
You are my Son:
this day I have begotten you;
just as he says in another place,
You are a priest forever
according to the order of Melchizedek.
In the days when he was in the Flesh,
he offered prayers and supplications with loud cries and tears
to the one who was able to save him from death,
and he was heard because of his reverence.
Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered;
and when he was made perfect,
he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him.

The LORD said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand
till I make your enemies your footstool.”

Gospel
The disciples of John and of the Pharisees were accustomed to fast.
People came to Jesus and objected,
“Why do the disciples of John and the disciples of the Pharisees fast,
but your disciples do not fast?”
Jesus answered them,
“Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them?
As long as they have the bridegroom with them they cannot fast.
But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them,
and then they will fast on that day.
No one sews a piece of unshrunken cloth on an old cloak.
If he does, its fullness pulls away,
the new from the old, and the tear gets worse.
Likewise, no one pours new wine into old wineskins.
Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins,
and both the wine and the skins are ruined.
Rather, new wine is poured into fresh wineskins.”

The passage from the Letter to the Hebrews reveals Jesus as the high priest bringing atonement for sins. The Psalm gives some background to the reference to Melchizedek in the first reading. In the Gospel Jesus responds to protests that he does not fast as the Pharisees do.
As described in The Book of Genesis, Melchizedek is a king and priest who brings out bread and wine and blesses Abraham, the father of salvation history. In today’s first reading, I am reminded that the (king and) priest Jesus is the fulfillment of this salvation history.
In some sense I see the Gospel as a reminder that we have the “Good News” in Jesus. I like to think that at least part of the message from today’s Gospel involves actively considering how we respond in each moment. While there is a time for penance and fasting, I am drawn toward the importance of recognizing and embracing the good that is present when it is present. We have a fragile existence on this earth. 2022 was a challenging year with viruses that continued, the start of a war in Europe, inflation and weather events hinting at the real impact of climate change. These challenges leave me asking myself how my time is spent. I think of time invested with my brother-in-law who died on Easter after a long illness. When I consider human frailty, I cannot help but be reminded of a dear friend who rapidly passed away last month because he had an injury to his toe that became septic. I realize that these serve as lingering prompts to recognize and acknowledge the moments we have with each other. In the United States, today is Martin Luther King Day which serves to remind me of another life that was unexpectedly cut short. Returning to the Gospel, my sense is that Jesus knows what lies on the road ahead and perhaps savoring time together is how these moments are best devoted.
I also see this Gospel as a reminder of how Jesus spends his time. I am reminded that He is present for bringing sinners back to God rather than concentrating on acts of piousness. I see in this passage His attempt to make clear that there is a new message that does fit in the old packaging. This serves as the focus of my prayer today.
Dear Lord,
Too often I fall into the self-righteousness of the Pharisees.
Life is so short; at the end of each day, I see how much of my time has been poorly spent.
Guide me in investing time in the things that really matter.
Strengthen my conscious awareness of the service that makes this world a better place.
Help me to embrace the new message that Jesus brings.

A LIFE OF LOVE
“How can the guests at a wedding fast as long as the groom is still among them?” —Mark 2:19
Jesus is our Bridegroom (Mk 2:19). First and foremost, our relationship with Him is to be a love relationship. We live our Christian lives not by compulsion, but by love. “We, for our part, love because He first loved us” (1 Jn 4:19).
We do everything as a loving response to Jesus. He is our Spouse, our Bridegroom. We live our Christian life as though we are in a wedding feast. We love others and forgive them because Jesus loved us first (1 Jn 4:19) and so we are in love with Jesus. Every day is a rich opportunity to drink more deeply of the fountain of the love of Jesus.
The Holy Mass is the wedding feast of the Lamb. Heaven is the wedding of God and mankind (Rv 19:7). We go to Mass, “the wedding feast of the Lamb” (Rv 19:9), to deepen our life of “nuptial” love with Jesus. We suffer because we love Jesus and so we joyfully imitate Him (Heb 5:8).
Each day, grow more deeply in love with Jesus. Love Him by loving your neighbor as yourself, for man was created in God’s image and likeness (see Gn 1:26). “Live in His love” (Jn 15:10). Love the Lord Jesus with your all (Lk 10:27).
Prayer: Father, pour out Your love into my heart through the Holy Spirit (Rm 5:5).
Promise: “Son though He was, He learned obedience from what He suffered; and when perfected, He became the Source of eternal salvation for all who obey Him.” —Heb 5:8-9
Praise: Ken was addicted to drugs. One weekend, he intended to get high. Instead God granted him a heavenly vision. For three days, Ken sat in his room swept up in the love of God. The experience so transformed him that he became a brother in a religious order and joyfully lives a life of consecrated service to the Lord.

Which comes first, fasting or feasting? The disciples of John the Baptist were upset with Jesus' disciples because they did not fast (Mark 2:18). Fasting was one of the three most important religious duties, along with prayer and almsgiving. Jesus gave a simple explanation. There's a time for fasting and a time for feasting (or celebrating). To walk as a disciple with Jesus is to experience a whole new joy of relationship akin to the joy of the wedding party in celebrating with the groom and bride their wedding bliss. But there also comes a time when the Lord's disciples must bear the cross of affliction and purification. For the disciple there is both a time for rejoicing in the Lord's presence and celebrating his goodness and a time for seeking the Lord with humility and fasting and for mourning over sin. Do you take joy in the Lord's presence with you and do you express sorrow and contrition for your sins?
The closed mind that rejects all of God's Word
Jesus goes on to warn his disciples about the problem of the "closed mind" that refuses to learn new things. Jesus used an image familiar to his audience - new and old wine skins. In Jesus' times, wine was stored in wine skins, not bottles. New wine poured into skins was still fermenting. The gases exerted gave pressure. New wine skins were elastic enough to take the pressure, but old wine skins easily burst because they were hard. What did Jesus mean by this comparison? Are we to reject the old in place of the new? Just as there is a right place and a right time for fasting and for feasting, so there is a right place for the old as well as the new.
Jesus says the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old (Matthew 13:52). How impoverished we would be if we only had the Old Testament books of Scripture or the New Testament books of Scripture, rather than both. The Lord gives us wisdom so we can make the best use of both the old and the new. He doesn't want us to hold rigidly to the past and to be resistant to the new work of his Holy Spirit in our lives. He wants our minds and hearts to be like new wine skins - open and ready to receive the new wine of the Holy Spirit. Are you eager to grow in the knowledge and understanding of God's word and plan for your life?
Lord Jesus, fill me with your Holy Spirit, that I may grow in the knowledge of your great love and truth. Help me to seek you earnestly in prayer and fasting that I may turn away from sin and wilfulness and conform my life more fully to your will. May I always find joy in knowing, loving, and serving You who are My All.
Psalm 110:1-4

"From the time that the incarnation of our Savior was first promised to the patriarchs, it was always awaited by many upright souls with tears and mourning - until he came. From that time when, after his resurrection, he ascended to heaven, all the hope of the saints hangs upon his return. It was at the time when he was keeping company with humanity that his presence was to be celebrated. Then it would have been unfitting to weep and mourn. For like the bride, she had him with her bodily whom she loved spiritually. Therefore the bridegroom is Christ, the bride is the church, and the friends of the bridegroom (Matthew 9:15, Luke 5:34) and of the marriage are each and every one of his faithful companions.
