주님께서 이렇게 말씀하신다. 1 “여기에 나의 종이 있다.

그는 내가 붙들어 주는 이, 내가 선택한 이, 내 마음에 드는 이다.

내가 그에게 나의 영을 주었으니 그는 민족들에게 공정을 펴리라.

2 그는 외치지도 않고 목소리를 높이지도 않으며

그 소리가 거리에서 들리게 하지도 않으리라.

3 그는 부러진 갈대를 꺾지 않고 꺼져 가는 심지를 끄지 않으리라.

그는 성실하게 공정을 펴리라.

4 그는 지치지 않고 기가 꺾이는 일 없이 마침내 세상에 공정을 세우리니

섬들도 그의 가르침을 고대하리라.

6 ‘주님인 내가 의로움으로 너를 부르고 네 손을 붙잡아 주었다.

내가 너를 빚어 만들어 백성을 위한 계약이 되고 민족들의 빛이 되게 하였으니

7 보지 못하는 눈을 뜨게 하고 갇힌 이들을 감옥에서,

어둠 속에 앉아 있는 이들을 감방에서 풀어 주기 위함이다.’”

사도행전.10,34-38

그 무렵 34 베드로가 입을 열어 말하였다.

“나는 이제 참으로 깨달았습니다.

하느님께서는 사람을 차별하지 않으시고,

35 어떤 민족에서건

당신을 경외하며 의로운 일을 하는 사람은 다 받아 주십니다.

36 하느님께서 예수 그리스도 곧 만민의 주님을 통하여

평화의 복음을 전하시면서 이스라엘 자손들에게 보내신 말씀을

37 여러분은 알고 있습니다.

그리고 요한이 세례를 선포한 이래 갈릴래아에서 시작하여

온 유다 지방에 걸쳐 일어난 일과,

38 하느님께서 나자렛 출신 예수님께 성령과 힘을 부어 주신 일도 알고 있습니다.

이 예수님께서 두루 다니시며 좋은 일을 하시고

마태오.3,13-17

13 그때에 예수님께서는 요한에게 세례를 받으시려고

갈릴래아에서 요르단으로 그를 찾아가셨다.

14 그러나 요한은 “제가 선생님께 세례를 받아야 할 터인데

선생님께서 저에게 오시다니요?” 하면서 그분을 말렸다.

15 예수님께서는 “지금은 이대로 하십시오.

우리는 이렇게 해서 마땅히 모든 의로움을 이루어야 합니다.” 하고 대답하셨다.

그제야 요한이 예수님의 뜻을 받아들였다.

16 예수님께서는 세례를 받으시고 곧 물에서 올라오셨다.

그때 그분께 하늘이 열렸다.

그분께서는 하느님의 영이 비둘기처럼 당신 위로 내려오시는 것을 보셨다.

17 그리고 하늘에서 이렇게 말하는 소리가 들려왔다.

Is 42:1-4, 6-7

Thus says the LORD:

Here is my servant whom I uphold,

my chosen one with whom I am pleased,

upon whom I have put my spirit;

he shall bring forth justice to the nations,

not crying out, not shouting,

not making his voice heard in the street.

a bruised reed he shall not break,

and a smoldering wick he shall not quench,

until he establishes justice on the earth;

the coastlands will wait for his teaching.

I, the LORD, have called you for the victory of justice,

I have grasped you by the hand;

I formed you, and set you

as a covenant of the people,

a light for the nations,

to open the eyes of the blind,

to bring out prisoners from confinement,

and from the dungeon, those who live in darkness.

Peter proceeded to speak to those gathered

Mt 3:13-17

Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan

to be baptized by him.

John tried to prevent him, saying,

"I need to be baptized by you,

and yet you are coming to me?"

Jesus said to him in reply,

"Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us

to fulfill all righteousness."

Then he allowed him.

After Jesus was baptized,

he came up from the water and behold,

the heavens were opened for him,

and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove

and coming upon him.

And a voice came from the heavens, saying,

"This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased."

Today we celebrate the baptism of the Lord Jesus. It is the last day of the holiday season. Ordinary time begins tomorrow. The readings are all about Jesus. What can we learn about him from them?

We believe that the prophet Isaiah is speaking of the Messiah, the one who came to us on Christmas morning. How is he described? He is a servant. The Father has chosen him. The Father is pleased with him, places his spirit on him, and chooses to send him to us. What does he bring with him? I think now of the nativity scenes that appeared all over our neighborhood and in front of our parish church. In this scene he comes as a baby. When I think of babies, the words that come to my mind are warm, cuddly, and sweet. Isaiah says that this warm, cuddly, and sweet baby will grow up to bring forth justice to the nations, something that is repeated two additional times. Not a justice from way off somewhere for he will be a covenant of the people. Covenants require personal involvement. The Word became flesh. He didn’t send justice; he brought it. What kind of justice will he bring? Enlightenment for the nations, sight for the blind, freedom for those in confinement, and light for those who dwell in darkness. When I think of someone bringing justice, I tend to think of someone wielding power and authority, crushing the wicked, and setting things right. Isaiah says that God’s servant will not come that way. He won’t be crying out and shouting. His voice won’t be heard in the street. In fact, he is so gentle that he is like a person who won’t break a bruised reed or quench a smoldering wick. That would be too violent for him. His justice will come to those who wait for and embrace his teaching. The scriptures make it clear that Jesus will come again in glory. He is the Lamb of God and the Lion of Judah. We just celebrated the Lamb. One day we will celebrate the Lion.

Matthew tells us that Jesus came to the Jordan River and asked John the Baptist to baptize him. John didn’t want to do it. His baptism was for the remission of sins. People who came for his baptism confessed their sins before their baptism. John obviously knew Jesus. He had no sins to confess. But Jesus insists. Being baptized is the right thing to do. The righteous identify with John and his baptism. Jesus identifies with sinners. A friend of mine used to say that Jesus’ feet stood in the same mud in that river as did everyone else who humbled themselves and turned to God. The result? The heavens were opened. Mark says that the heavens were torn open. God comes to earth, identifies with sinners, and opens the heavens for them.

We see the dove descend, we hear the voice from the heavens, and with the psalmist we proclaim, “The Lord will bless his people with peace.”

“...beginning in Galilee with the baptism...” —Acts 10:37

Jesus’ Baptism is narrated in all four Gospels, indicating how important it is (Mt 3:13-17; Mk 1:9-11; Lk 3:21-22; Jn 1:29-34). Jesus voluntarily submitted Himself to St. John’s baptism of repentance, even though He had no need to repent of any sin. He was baptized to fulfill all righteousness (Mt 3:15). This is why Jesus came to earth. Jesus submitted to Baptism for each one of us. His Baptism is a manifestation of His self-emptying (see Phil 2:7). Jesus’ entire ministry is one of giving Himself completely, to the last breath and the last drop of His blood. In this way, Jesus released humanity from its bondage to sin.

“After His resurrection, Christ gives this mission to His apostles: ‘Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them...teaching them...’ ” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1223). In Baptism we are made righteous again, through the blood of Christ.

Jesus’ Baptism inaugurated His public ministry. At the Jordan, Jesus was already anticipating His own death. Out of love, Jesus consented to the baptism of His own death (see Lk 12:50). The Father was well-pleased by His Son’s obedience (Mt 3:17).

By His humble submission to Baptism (Mk 1:9), Jesus calls each of us to receive and live our Baptism. Renew your Baptism as His disciple today. Live your baptismal mission of prayer, dying to self, love, and service in risen power.

Prayer: Father, give me a much greater awareness of “the immense, extraordinary richness and responsibility” of my Baptism (Lay Members of Christ’s Faithful People, Pope St. John Paul II, 10, 61).

Promise: “I, the Lord, have called you for the victory of justice.”—Is 42:6

Praise: “He was born and was baptized so that by His submission He might purify the water” (Letter to the Ephesians, St. Ignatius of Antioch, 110 AD).
