Reading 1

1 Jn 2:29-3:6

If you consider that God is righteous,

you also know that everyone who acts in righteousness

is begotten by him.

See what love the Father has bestowed on us

that we may be called the children of God.

Yet so we are.

The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.

Beloved, we are God's children now;

what we shall be has not yet been revealed.

We do know that when it is revealed we shall be like him,

for we shall see him as he is.

Everyone who has this hope based on him makes himself pure,

as he is pure.

Everyone who commits sin commits lawlessness,

for sin is lawlessness.

You know that he was revealed to take away sins,

and in him there is no sin.

No one who remains in him sins;

no one who sins has seen him or known him.

Responsorial Psalm

Ps 98:1, 3cd-4, 5-6

R. (3cd) All the ends of the earth have seen the saving power of God.

Sing to the LORD a new song,

for he has done wondrous deeds;

His right hand has won victory for him,

his holy arm.

R. All the ends of the earth have seen the saving power of God.

All the ends of the earth have seen

the salvation by our God.

Sing joyfully to the LORD, all you lands;

break into song; sing praise.

R. All the ends of the earth have seen the saving power of God.

Sing praise to the LORD with the harp,

with the harp and melodious song.

With trumpets and the sound of the horn

sing joyfully before the King, the LORD.

R. All the ends of the earth have seen the saving power of God.

Gospel

Jn 1:29-34

John the Baptist saw Jesus coming toward him and said,

"Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.

He is the one of whom I said,

'A man is coming after me who ranks ahead of me

because he existed before me.'

I did not know him,

but the reason why I came baptizing with water

was that he might be made known to Israel."

John testified further, saying,

"I saw the Spirit come down like a dove from the sky

and remain upon him.

I did not know him,

but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me,

'On whomever you see the Spirit come down and remain,

he is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.'

Now I have seen and testified that he is the Son of God."

THE WORD OF GOD BECAME FLESH AND DWELT AMONG US.

BELOVED, WE ARE GOD’S CHILDREN NOW; WHAT WE SHALL BE HAS NOT YET BEEN REVEALED.

WE DO KNOW THAT WHEN IT IS REVEALED WE SHALL BE LIKE HIM, FOR WE SHALL SEE HIM AS HE IS.

You know how it is when you stand in the open air at night and gaze up at the stars. How small and insignificant you might feel. How immense the universe. How incomprehensible that the Creator of all that magnificence cares about each and every one of us. How remote God may seem, lost in all that starriness. But what a promise John gives us – not only does the Creator care, but we are the beloved children of this immeasurable love. And even better, we shall see him as he is, and in doing so, become like him. Is there anything else we need to know?

Two years ago, on Christmas Day 2021, The James Webb Space Telescope was launched by rocket into that starry expanse, seeking to discover the first light in the universe, the assembly of galaxies in the early universe, the birth of stars and protoplanetary systems and planets (including the origins of life.) Perhaps this huge eye in the sky will discover some facts, but the heart of the matter remains hidden to it – that our God is one who “gets foolishly close,” in the words of our late pastor Fr. Patrick Malone, S.J., in an article first published in the Jesuit magazine, America, and later reprinted in the collection of Fr. Pat’s writings, “Seeded At God’s Hand.” (available from St. John’s Church)

That seemingly remote population of shining stars and planets embroidering the night sky hides an amazing truth – that God is not “out there” but “in here.” The immanence of the Creator of all, revealed in the birth of Jesus, remains.

When I was a very young child, my mother read to me from a book showing Mary teaching Jesus about the night sky and its Creator from the flat roof of their dwelling. I have been drawn to the night sky and to God since then.

Father Pat again: “…faith is what brings us into the deepest truth of our lives. It is a buried truth that says we are in the image of an unlimited, unrestricted, unimaginable love….In whose image and likeness do we see ourselves?....We know we are always held, always invited to feel the healing closeness of Christ. It is hard to explain logically a religion where we have a God who gets absurdly close, so close that (boundaries) between what is human and what is sacred become blurry. So incredibly close that we are forced to discern the face of God in all the mess of creation.”

In Exodus Chapter 33:19-23 there is a wonderful passage I have always been drawn to – Moses asks to see God’s glory but God says he will pass by and Moses is to see only God’s back. There are several interpretations of this passage but I like to think of it as we know God by what he has done – hence the creation speaks to us of him and all living beings echo that love song of God. So the God of infinite love and mercy is there for all to see, and we shall see him as he is.

May we all find God in all things and all events, and know that there is Love, there is Mercy.

“O HOLY NIGHT”

“If you consider the holiness that is His, you can be sure that everyone who acts in holiness has been begotten by Him.” —1 John 2:29

One of the main purposes of the Christmas season is to grow in holiness — to become more like God, to take on God’s character. This holy Christmas time begins a holy year in a holy life, which begins a holy, eternal life. The Lord has created us to be holy as He is holy (see 1 Jn 3:3), to be “perfect in holiness” (1 Thes 5:23). We should “hunger and thirst for holiness” (Mt 5:6) and seek first God’s way of holiness (Mt 6:33). We must strive “for that holiness without which no one can see the Lord” (Heb 12:14).

The Lord expects “perfect” holiness from us because He has given us the power to become holy. Because we have been begotten by Him, that is, born again, by faith and Baptism (see Jn 3:3-5), we have a new nature by which we can live a holy life (1 Jn 2:29). Even if we fall into temptation and live according to our old sinful nature, we can repent and be washed clean in Jesus’ blood. Finally, the Father and the Son have given us the third Person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit, Who makes us holy. Because of new life in the waters of Baptism, forgiveness through Jesus’ blood shed on Calvary, and the indwelling of the Spirit, the Lord expects us to be holy as He is holy. Have a holy Christmas season.

Prayer: Father, may my desire for holiness be stronger than my desire for pleasure.

Promise: “When you see the Spirit descend and rest on Someone, it is He Who is to baptize with the Holy Spirit.” —Jn 1:33

Praise: “You have been washed, consecrated, justified in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God” (1 Cor 6:11). Thank You, Lord Jesus!

John calls Jesus the Lamb of God and thus signifies Jesus' mission as the One who redeems us from our sins. The blood of the Passover Lamb (Exodus 12) delivered the Israelites in Egypt from slavery and death. The Lord Jesus freely offered up his life for us on the cross as the atoning sacrifice for our sins (1 Corinthians 5:7). The blood which he poured out for us on the cross cleanses, heals, and frees us from our slavery to sin, and from the "wages of sin which is death" (Romans 6:23) and the "destruction of both body and soul in hell" (Matthew 10:28).

John points to Jesus' saving mission - to offer up his life as the atoning sacrifice for our sins

It is significant that John was the son of Zachariah, a priest of Israel who participated in the daily sacrifice of a lamb in the temple for the sins of the people (Exodus 29). John recognized that Jesus was the perfect unblemished lamb offered by the Father in heaven as the one and only sacrifice that could cancel the debt of sin, and free us from death and the destruction of body and soul in hell.

The Holy Spirit reveals who Jesus truly is - the Son of God and Savior of the world

When John says he did not know Jesus (John 1:31,33) he was referring to the hidden reality of Jesus' divinity. But the Holy Spirit in that hour revealed to John Jesus' true nature, such that John bore witness that this is the Son of God. How can we be certain that Jesus is truly the Christ, the Son of the living God? The Holy Spirit makes the Lord Jesus Christ known to us through the gift of faith. God gives us his Spirit as our helper and guide who opens our hearts and minds to receive and comprehend the great mystery and plan of God - to unite all things in his Son, our Lord Jesus Christ (Ephesians 1:10).

Do you want to grow in the knowledge and love of Jesus Christ? Ask the Lord to pour his Holy Spirit upon you to deepen your faith, hope, and love for God and for the plan he has for your life.

Lord Jesus Christ, fill me with the power of your Holy Spirit and let me grow in the knowledge of your great love and truth. Let your Spirit be aflame in my heart that I may know and love you more fervently and strive to do your will in all things.

Psalm 98:1,3b-6

1 O sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things! His right hand and his holy arm have gotten him victory.

3b All the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God.

4 Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises!

5 Sing praises to the LORD with the lyre, with the lyre and the sound of melody!

6 With trumpets and the sound of the horn make a joyful noise before the King, the LORD!

Daily Quote from the Early Church Fathers: John points to Jesus' saving mission, by Cyril of Alexandria (376-444 AD)

"No longer does John need to 'prepare the way,' since the one for whom the preparation was being made is right there before his eyes... But now he who of old was dimly pictured, the very Lamb, the spotless Sacrifice, is led to the slaughter for all, that he might drive away the sin of the world, that he might overturn the destroyer of the earth, that dying for all he might annihilate death, that he might undo the curse that is upon us... For one Lamb died for all (2 Corinthians 5:14), saving the whole flock on earth to God the Father, one for all, that he might subject all to God."
