1독서

예레미야서. 31,31-34

Reading 1

Jer 31:31-34

The days are coming, says the LORD,
when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel
and the house of Judah.
It will not be like the covenant I made with their fathers:
the day I took them by the hand
to lead them forth from the land of Egypt;
for they broke my covenant,
and I had to show myself their master, says the LORD.
But this is the covenant that I will make
with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD.
I will place my law within them, and write it upon their hearts;
I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
No longer will they have need to teach their friends and relatives
how to know the LORD.
All, from least to greatest, shall know me, says the LORD,
for I will forgive their evildoing and remember their sin no more.

Responsorial Psalm

R. (12a) Create a clean heart in me, O God.
A clean heart create for me, O God,
and a steadfast spirit renew within me.
Cast me not out from your presence,
and your Holy Spirit take not from me.
R. Create a clean heart in me, O God.
Give me back the joy of your salvation,
and a willing spirit sustain in me.
I will teach transgressors your ways,
and sinners shall return to you.
R. Create a clean heart in me, O God.
For you are not pleased with sacrifices;
should I offer a burnt offering, you would not accept it.
My sacrifice, O God, is a contrite spirit;
a heart contrite and humbled, O God, you will not spurn.
R. Create a clean heart in me, O God.

Gospel
Mt 16:13-23

Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi
and he asked his disciples,
“Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”
They replied, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah,
still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”
Simon Peter said in reply,
“You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
Jesus said to him in reply, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah.
For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father.
And so I say to you, you are Peter,
and upon this rock I will build my Church,
and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.
I will give you the keys to the Kingdom of heaven.
Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven;
and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”
Then he strictly ordered his disciples
to tell no one that he was the Christ.

From that time on, Jesus began to show his disciples
that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer greatly
from the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes,
and be killed and on the third day be raised.
Then Peter took Jesus aside and began to rebuke him,
“God forbid, Lord! No such thing shall ever happen to you.”
He turned and said to Peter,
“Get behind me, Satan! You are an obstacle to me.
You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.”

Being a Christian has never been easy, not for the disciples and not for us, especially when we begin to romanticize what it means to be a Christian and to practice discipleship.  It is easy to forget what we have decided to take upon ourselves when we remain Christian.  It seems straightforward until we ask ourselves, "Who is God?  How should I relate to Jesus?  What’s my purpose?  In God's church, where do I fit in?  Am I willing to answer the call to the unknown when Jesus calls my name?  When Jesus asked his disciples to tell him who everyone thought he was and who they think he is, it was obvious they knew and felt Jesus was someone special.  They recalled names of those they held as important, special, and holy from their knowledge.  Peter went further and said what we have come to know and believe, that Jesus is the Christ.  Knowing the Lord, knowing Jesus, means being open to all that is revealed to us and allowing God to do what must be done to save our souls, regardless of whether we agree with the process.

So, who is Jesus to you?  What would we say if he should ask us that question today?  Would it be easier to answer the question now that we know what Peter said?  After all, Jesus confirmed Peter's answer as correct.  It took me a while to re-visualize and re-experience Jesus through the re-telling of His story from scripture and through prayer.  Some days Jesus is like an older brother to me; some days, Jesus is like a best friend; some days, Jesus is that random stranger at the bus station who says something profound, but I didn't catch his name.  Sometimes Jesus is so far out of reach that I don't know what to say or how to feel when I pray for his guidance.  Sometimes, Jesus is the one who waits for me to wake up in the morning so that his smile is the first thing I see.  Sometimes, Jesus is the only one I feel understands what I, as a human being, go through when I have been betrayed or accused falsely or misunderstood.  Sometimes Jesus is the one I call on when I need a walking partner and need to vent or even laugh, or when I need someone to walk me home.  So, what would you say if Jesus should ask you, "who am I to you?"

For many years my idea of Jesus was clouded by the Jesus character I had seen in movies.  My mental image of Jesus looked like the Jesus depicted in paintings, books, and sculpted statues.  When most of us visualize Jesus in prayer, our image of Jesus tends to look like one of those depictions, or we might even find ourselves redesigning the face of Jesus to look like someone we like, so we might listen better or approve.  The problem is that when Jesus then shows up as someone we don’t recognize, or someone we don’t think has anything to tell us, like a five years old child, a homeless man begging on a street corner, or a person whom we don't find physically attractive, we resist the message.  We decide how the conversation will go.  We get in the way of God's work instead of fully investing in it and being open to whatever gets revealed in the process.  We lose sight of the unexpected message revealed by God; we lose sight of who Jesus is.  To me, Jesus is not just the Son of the living God and the Christ; Jesus is a profound message of love, and the message opened says, "I love you to death." These days, that message is all I need.  May we have the faith to see and know Jesus and also the courage to accept what comes along with following him and being loved.

LIES ABOUT LOVE

“Jesus turned on Peter and said, ‘Get out of My sight, you satan! You are trying to make Me trip and fall. You are not judging by God’s standards but by man’s.’ ” —Matthew 16:23

By the grace of the heavenly Father, Simon Peter made a great act of faith by professing Jesus as the Messiah, “the Son of the living God!” (Mt 16:16) In a short time, however, by denying the cross and “not judging by God’s standards but by man’s” (Mt 16:23), Peter showed that he did not understand what he had professed. This shows the astounding proclivity of the human person to self-deception.

“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately corrupt; who can understand it?” (Jer 17:9, RSV-CE) We can deceive ourselves especially about our faith, conversions to the Lord, and relationships with Him. The classical doctors of mystical theology, particularly St. John of the Cross, are preoccupied with this proclivity to spiritual self-deception.

The Lord has resolved this extremely dangerous situation by giving us a new nature at Baptism (see Rm 6:4). Nonetheless, we must live our Baptisms by yielding to the Holy Spirit, Who will lead us into the Church, into submission to her authority, and to the foot of the cross. The Church will challenge our self-deception if we are obedient to her. The cross will purify our motives and reveal anything which is not authentic in our faith. So let us live our Baptisms by the power of the Holy Spirit and thereby love the Lord in truth.

Prayer:  Father, probe my mind and test my heart (Jer 17:10).

Promise:  “I will place My law within them, and write it upon their hearts.” —Jer 31:33

Praise:  Many Catholic priests ask for the intercession of St. John Mary Vianney. He is the patron of parish priests and his life exemplified fortitude and humility.

How firm is your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ? At an opportune time Jesus tested his disciples with a crucial question: Who do men say that I am and who do you say that I am? (Matthew 16:13). Jesus was widely recognized in Israel as a mighty man of God, even being compared with the greatest of the prophets, John the Baptist, Elijah, and Jeremiah. Peter, always quick to respond, exclaimed that Jesus was the Christ, the Son of the living God.

Through the gift of faith Peter recognized that Jesus was the "anointed one" (in Hebrew and Greek the word is translated as Messiah and Christ), and the only begotten Son of God sent by the Father in heaven to redeem a fallen human race. No mortal being could have revealed this to Peter; but only God. Jesus then conferred on Peter authority to govern the church that Jesus would build, a church that no powers could overcome. Jesus played on Peter's name which is the same word for "rock" in both Aramaic and Greek.

Spiritual rock ad living stones
To call someone a "rock" is one of the greatest of compliments. The ancient rabbis had a saying that when God saw Abraham, he exclaimed: "I have discovered a rock to found the world upon." Abraham put his trust in God and made God's word the foundation of his life and the bedrock of his faith. Through Abraham God established a nation for himself. Through faith Peter grasped who Jesus truly was. He was the first apostle to proclaim that Jesus was truly the Anointed One (Messiah and Christ) and the only begotten Son of God.

The New Testament describes the church, the people of God, as a spiritual house and temple of the Holy Spirit with each member joined together as living stones (see 1 Peter 2:5). Faith in Jesus Christ makes us into rocks - spiritual stones. The Lord Jesus tests each of us personally with the same question: Who do you say that I am?

Lord Jesus, I profess and believe that you are the Christ, the Son of the living God. You are my Lord and my Savior who has set me free from sin and deception. Make my faith strong like the Apostles Peter and Paul and give me boldness to speak of you to others that they may come to know you as Lord and Savior.

Psalm 19:2-5

2 Day to day pours forth speech, and night to night declares knowledge.
3 There is no speech, nor are there words; their voice is not heard;
4 yet their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them he has set a tent for the sun,
5 which comes forth like a bridegroom leaving his chamber, and like a strong man runs its course with joy.

Daily Quote from the Early Church Fathers: Only by hope, by Basil the Great, 329-379 A.D.

"'Turn, O my soul, into your rest: for the Lord has been bountiful to you' (Psalm 114:7). The brave contestant applies to himself the consoling words, very much like to Paul, when he says: 'I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith. For the rest, there is laid up for me a crown of justice.' These things the prophet also says to himself: Since you have fulfilled sufficiently the course of this life, turn then to your rest, 'for the Lord has been bountiful to you.' For, eternal rest lies before those who have struggled through the present life observant of the laws, a rest not given in payment for a debt owed for their works but provided as a grace of the munificent God for those who have hoped in him." (excerpt from HOMILIES 22)
