Feast of Saint James, apostle
Reading 1
2 Cor 4:7-15
Brothers and sisters:
We hold this treasure in earthen vessels,
that the surpassing power may be of God and not from us.
We are afflicted in every way, but not constrained;
perplexed, but not driven to despair;
persecuted, but not abandoned;
struck down, but not destroyed;
always carrying about in the body the dying of Jesus,
so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our body.
For we who live are constantly being given up to death
for the sake of Jesus,
so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh.
So death is at work in us, but life in you.
Since, then, we have the same spirit of faith,
according to what is written, I believed, therefore I spoke,
we too believe and therefore speak,
knowing that the one who raised the Lord Jesus
will raise us also with Jesus
and place us with you in his presence.
Everything indeed is for you,
so that the grace bestowed in abundance on more and more people
may cause the thanksgiving to overflow for the glory of God.
Responsorial Psalm
R. (5) Those who sow in tears shall reap rejoicing.
When the LORD brought back the captives of Zion,
we were like men dreaming.
Then our mouth was filled with laughter,
and our tongue with rejoicing.
R. Those who sow in tears shall reap rejoicing.
Then they said among the nations,
“The LORD has done great things for them.”
The LORD has done great things for us;
we are glad indeed.
R. Those who sow in tears shall reap rejoicing.
Restore our fortunes, O LORD,
like the torrents in the southern desert.
Those that sow in tears
shall reap rejoicing.
R. Those who sow in tears shall reap rejoicing.
Although they go forth weeping,
carrying the seed to be sown,
They shall come back rejoicing,
carrying their sheaves.
R. Those who sow in tears shall reap rejoicing.
Gospel
The mother of the sons of Zebedee approached Jesus with her sons
and did him homage, wishing to ask him for something.
He said to her,
“What do you wish?”
She answered him,
“Command that these two sons of mine sit,
one at your right and the other at your left, in your Kingdom.”
Jesus said in reply,
“You do not know what you are asking.
Can you drink the chalice that I am going to drink?”
They said to him, “We can.”
He replied,
“My chalice you will indeed drink,
but to sit at my right and at my left, this is not mine to give
but is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.”
When the ten heard this,
they became indignant at the two brothers.
But Jesus summoned them and said,
“You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them,
and the great ones make their authority over them felt.
But it shall not be so among you.
Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant;
whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave.
Just so, the Son of Man did not come to be served
but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

There is a great tension that lives in the drama of the Christian life. On the one hand, there is the weighty calling to follow Jesus in the truest sense of the term. As Jesus puts it to the sons of Zebedee in today’s gospel, Can you drink the chalice that I am going to drink? I struggle to think of a challenge or invitation (indeed, this question is both) that would be greater than this. On the other hand, there is our humanity; which is to say, our sinfulness, imperfection, brokenness, weakness. This being our condition, we cannot escape it. And if we cannot escape it, how can we possibly respond affirmatively to Jesus’ invitation? How could we possibly drink that chalice when it is our very humanity that seems to get in the way?
Our readings today suggest one possible hint: hope. Hope may point to the answer to our question of how. As we read in 2 Corinthians today, … we too believe and therefore speak, knowing that the one who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and place us with you in his presence. We have hope in Jesus and hope in the resurrection. Earlier this month, I saw (and felt) such hope when I attended the funeral of a dear colleague. Patrick Reidy was his name. Amidst the sorrow-soaked tears of those present, I witnessed great hope. Hope in Patrick’s seat among the saints. Hope that God has also prepared a place for us. As far as I could observe, Patrick lived with Christian hope…
…which brings us to our answer. How could we possibly drink that chalice? How can we accept God’s invitation amidst this tension? The answer, itself is God: the one in whom we place our hope. The one who asks the question is the very answer, for God asks nothing of us with which he will not himself assist. God asks us to go nowhere he will not himself accompany us. God is the difference-maker when it comes to our drinking from that chalice.
So, let us pray for awareness of those times in our life when God poses this question to us. Let us pray also for the hope to inspire our Yes. God will be right there with us.

THE DEATH OF DEATH
“Death is at work in us, but life in you.” —2 Corinthians 4:12
Our culture of death will eventually be true to its name and die out. (We pray that this death of the culture of death will occur as soon as possible so that fewer people will be traumatized.) Death as a work of the evil one will be destroyed by another kind of death — a loving death to self in the pattern of Jesus’ death on the cross (see Phil 3:10). The writer of Song of Songs proclaims: “Stern as death is love, relentless as the nether world is devotion” (Sg 8:6). In fact, Jesus’ crucified love is more stern than death. Jesus’ death on the cross resulted in the ultimate and total victory of risen life over death.
Consequently, in love let us fall “to the earth” and die so as to produce “much fruit” (Jn 12:24). “Continually we carry about in our bodies the dying of Jesus, so that in our bodies the life of Jesus may also be revealed. While we live we are constantly being delivered to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus may be revealed” (2 Cor 4:10-11). We have been baptized into Jesus’ death so as to share in His Resurrection (Rm 6:3, 5).
A friend of mine has a saying: “You’re not done dying till you’re dead.” Die to self in Christ and in love.
Prayer: Father, teach me how to die in love. St. James, pray for the death of the culture of death.
Promise: “Such is the case with the Son of Man Who has come, not to be served by others, but to serve, to give His own life as a ransom for the many.” —Mt 20:28
Praise: “During that period, King Herod started to harass some of the members of the church. He beheaded James the brother of John” (Acts 12:1-2). Holy Spirit, thank You for gracing St. James with faithfulness and fortitude.

What can mustard seeds and leaven teach us about the kingdom of God? The tiny mustard seed literally grew to be a tree which attracted numerous birds because they loved the little black mustard seed it produced. God's kingdom works in a similar fashion. It starts from the smallest beginnings in the hearts of men and women who are receptive to God's word. And it works unseen and causes a transformation from within.
Hidden power of transforming seeds and leaven
Leaven is another powerful agent of change. A lump of dough left to itself remains just what it is, a lump of dough. But when the leaven is added to it a transformation takes place which produces rich and wholesome bread when heated - the staple of life for humans.
God's word has power to transforms us
The kingdom of God produces a transformation in those who receive the new life which Jesus Christ offers. When we yield our lives to Jesus Christ and allow his word to take root in our heart, we are transformed and made holy by the power of the Holy Spirit who dwells in us. Paul the Apostle says, "we have this treasure in earthen vessels, to show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to us" (2 Corinthians 4:7). Do you believe in the transforming power of the Holy Spirit?
Psalm 145:8-9,15-18
8 The LORD is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
9 The LORD is good to all, and his compassion is over all that he has made.
15 The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food in due season.
16 You open your hand, you satisfy the desire of every living thing.
17 The LORD is just in all his ways, and kind in all his doings.
18 The LORD is near to all who call upon him, to all who call upon him in truth.
Daily Quote from the Early Church Fathers: A small seed produces a great tree, by John Chrysostom (347-407 AD)
"Therefore he brought forward the similitude of this herb, which has a very strong resemblance to the kingdom of heaven. It indeed is 'the least of all seeds, but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof.'
Thus he meant to set forth the most decisive sign of its greatness. 'Even so then shall it also be with respect to the gospel,' he says. For his disciples were weakest of all and least of all. Nevertheless, because of the great power that was in them, it has grown and been unfolded in every part of the world." (excerpt from the THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW, HOMILY 46.2)
