제1독서
예레미야서. 2,1-3.7-8.12-13

Reading 1
Go, cry out this message for Jerusalem to hear!
I remember the devotion of your youth,
how you loved me as a bride,
Following me in the desert,
in a land unsown.
Sacred to the LORD was Israel,
the first fruits of his harvest;
Should any presume to partake of them,
evil would befall them, says the LORD.
When I brought you into the garden land
to eat its goodly fruits,
You entered and defiled my land,
you made my heritage loathsome.
The priests asked not,
“Where is the LORD?”
Those who dealt with the law knew me not:
the shepherds rebelled against me.
The prophets prophesied by Baal,
and went after useless idols.
Be amazed at this, O heavens,
and shudder with sheer horror, says the LORD.
Two evils have my people done:
they have forsaken me, the source of living waters;
They have dug themselves cisterns,
broken cisterns, that hold no water.
Responsorial Psalm
O LORD, your mercy reaches to heaven;
your faithfulness, to the clouds.
Your justice is like the mountains of God;
your judgments, like the mighty deep.
R. With you is the fountain of life, O Lord.
How precious is your mercy, O God!
The children of men take refuge in the shadow of your wings.
They have their fill of the prime gifts of your house;
from your delightful stream you give them to drink.
R. With you is the fountain of life, O Lord.
For with you is the fountain of life,
and in your light we see light.
Keep up your mercy toward your friends,
your just defense of the upright of heart.
R. With you is the fountain of life, O Lord.
Gospel
“Why do you speak to the crowd in parables?”
He said to them in reply,
“Because knowledge of the mysteries of the Kingdom of heaven
has been granted to you, but to them it has not been granted.
To anyone who has, more will be given and he will grow rich;
from anyone who has not, even what he has will be taken away.
This is why I speak to them in parables, because
they look but do not see and hear but do not listen or understand.
Isaiah’s prophecy is fulfilled in them, which says:
You shall indeed hear but not understand,
you shall indeed look but never see.
Gross is the heart of this people,
they will hardly hear with their ears,
they have closed their eyes,
lest they see with their eyes
and hear with their ears
and understand with their hearts and be converted
and I heal them.
“But blessed are your eyes, because they see,
and your ears, because they hear.
Amen, I say to you, many prophets and righteous people
longed to see what you see but did not see it,
and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.”

Jesus speaks in parables a lot, and in the gospel today his disciples ask him why. He has just delivered the parable about sowing seeds – some seed gets eaten by birds and does not grow, some falls in rocky ground and cannot grow, some gets burned up by the sun, some is choked out by weeds, but some is in good soil and grows strong and plentiful plants. And this parable is kind of about speaking in parables.
The first reading tells of the people who turned away from God and defiled the land. They didn’t listen to his words. They turned to false gods. But when they do that, they only hurt themselves. Says the LORD, “Two evils have my people done: they have forsaken me, the source of living waters; They have dug themselves cisterns, broken cisterns, that hold no water.” The people have turned away from the true god who could provide for them and have created around them empty false gods. They were given the words but they did not listen and they turned away.
Jesus tells the disciples that he speaks in parables because, like the example of the seeds and the sower, not everyone who hears will listen. Not everyone who hears will understand. Some are like the people from the first reading who hear the word, but they turn away and defile the land like the seeds choked by weeds. Isaiah’s prophecy is fulfilled in them, which says: You shall indeed hear but not understand, you shall indeed look but never see. But there are some who will hear, and listen, and understand. The very disciples who are confused about his methods are the ones who can benefit from them. They are listening carefully and understanding the deeper meanings too and the symbolism. With the parables the disciples can understand the bigger context of Jesus’ words, and then help share that with others as well.
We need to be aware and be like the disciples who listen carefully and critically and not like the people who turn away from the true source. Let these words fall on us like the seeds in the good rich soil that will bring forth good and plentiful fruit.

“A TIME TO PLANT” (ECCL 3:2)
“I use parables when I speak to them because they look but do not see, they listen but do not hear or understand.” —Matthew 13:13
The homilist at this morning’s Mass made an interesting analogy between parables and the Incarnation. Jesus tells parables about mysteries that have not yet been explained, and it requires time for the parable’s meaning to be made clear. Likewise, Jesus came to earth as a tiny infant, not as a grown man. It required time and growth for Jesus to reveal the fullness of His majesty as Lord, Savior, and God (Lk 2:40).
Similarly, we need to look and listen, as the meaning of a parable takes time to unfold. One quick hearing or reading of a parable is insufficient. Like the Blessed Mother, we must ponder, reflect, re-read, pray, seek, and listen (Lk 2:19, 51).
Let the Word of God be sown in your heart like a mustard seed (Lk 17:6). Actively cultivate that Word (Lk 13:8-9). Let the Word take root (Jas 1:21), grow (Mk 4:27), and bear abundant fruit in your life (Mt 13:23).
Prayer: Father, may I meditate on Your Word day and night (Ps 1:2). Give me both the love for Your Word and the discipline needed to enable Your Word to bear a hundredfold harvest (Mt 13:8).
Promise: “O Lord, Your kindness reaches to heaven; Your faithfulness, to the clouds.” —Ps 36:6
Praise: St. Lawrence studied philosophy and theology. He is best known for mastering many languages. His great intellect was combined with genuine compassion and care for others.

Do you want to grow in your knowledge of God? Saint Augustine of Hippo (354-430 AD) once said: "I believe, in order to understand; and I understand, the better to believe." Both faith and understanding are gifts of the Holy Spirit that enable us to hear God's word with clarity so we can know God better and grow in the knowledge of his love and truth. Jesus, however, had to warn his disciples that not everyone would understand his teaching.
Closed hearts - prejudiced minds
The prophet Isaiah had warned that some would hear God's word, but not believe, some would see God's actions and miracles, and remain unconvinced. Ironically some of the greatest skeptics of Jesus' teaching and miracles were the learned scribes and Pharisees who prided themselves on their knowledge of Scripture, especially on the law of Moses. They heard Jesus' parables and saw the great signs and miracles which he performed, but they refused to accept both Jesus and his message. How could they "hear and never understand" and "see but never perceive"? They were spiritually blind and deaf because their hearts were closed and their minds were blocked by pride and prejudice. How could a man from Galilee, the supposed son of a carpenter, know more about God and his word, than these experts who devoted their lives to the study and teaching of the law of Moses?
The humble of heart receive understanding
There is only one thing that can open a closed, confused, and divided mind - a broken heart and humble spirit! The worddisciple means one who is willing to learn and ready to submit to the wisdom and truth which comes from God. Psalm 119 expresses the joy and delight of a disciple who loves God's word and who embraces it with trust and obedience. "Oh, how I love your law! It is my meditation all the day. Your commandment makes me wiser than my enemies, for it is ever with me. I have more understanding than all my teachers, for your testimonies are my meditation." (Psalm 119:97-99)
Listen with reverence and faith
God can only reveal the secrets of his kingdom to the humble and trusting person who acknowledges their need for God and for his truth. The parables of Jesus will enlighten us if we approach them with an open mind and heart, ready to let them challenge us. If we approach God's word with indifference, skepticism, and disbelief, then we, too, may "hear but not understand" and "see but not perceive." God's word can only take root in a receptive heart that is ready to believe and willing to submit. If we want to hear and to understand God's word, we must listen with reverence and faith. Do you believe God's word and do you submit to it with trust and reverence?
Jerome, an early church bible scholar who lived between 342-419 AD, wrote: "You are reading [the Scriptures]? No.Your betrothed is talking to you. It is your betrothed, that is, Christ, who is united with you. He tears you away from the solitude of the desert and brings you into his home, saying to you, 'Enter into the joy of your Master.'"
Holy Spirit, be my teacher and guide. Open my ears to hear God's word and open my eyes to understand God's action in my life. May my heart never grow dull and may my ears never tire of listening to the voice of Christ.
Psalm 36:5-10
5 Your steadfast love, O LORD, extends to the heavens, your faithfulness to the clouds.
6 Your righteousness is like the mountains of God, your judgments are like the great deep; man and beast you save, O LORD.
7 How precious is your steadfast love, O God! The children of men take refuge in the shadow of your wings.
8 They feast on the abundance of your house, and you give them drink from the river of your delights.
9 For with you is the fountain of life; in your light do we see light.
10 O continue your steadfast love to those who know you, and your salvation to the upright of heart!
Daily Quote from the Early Church Fathers: Ears that refuse to hear, by Hilary of Poitiers (315-367 AD)
"Faith perceives the mysteries of the kingdom. A person will make progress in those things he has been immersed in and will abound with an increase in that progress. But in those things he has not been immersed in, even that which he has shall be taken away from him. In other words, he suffers the loss of the law from the loss of his faith. Lacking faith, the people of the law lost even the efficacy of the law. Therefore, gospel faith receives a perfect gift, because it enriches with new fruit those things that have been undertaken. But once it is rejected, even the help of one's former means of support is taken away. (excerpt from a commentary ON MATTHEW 13.2)
