Reading 1
Thus says the LORD:
When Israel was a child I loved him,
out of Egypt I called my son.
The more I called them,
the farther they went from me,
Sacrificing to the Baals
and burning incense to idols.
Yet it was I who taught Ephraim to walk,
who took them in my arms;
I drew them with human cords,
with bands of love;
I fostered them like one
who raises an infant to his cheeks;
Yet, though I stooped to feed my child,
they did not know that I was their healer.
My heart is overwhelmed,
my pity is stirred.
I will not give vent to my blazing anger,
I will not destroy Ephraim again;
For I am God and not man,
the Holy One present among you;
I will not let the flames consume you.
R. (4b)
Let us see your face, Lord, and we shall be saved.
O shepherd of Israel, hearken.
From your throne upon the cherubim, shine forth.
Rouse your power.
R. Let us see your face, Lord, and we shall be saved.
Once again, O LORD of hosts,
look down from heaven, and see:
Take care of this vine,
and protect what your right hand has planted,
the son of man whom you yourself made strong.
R. Let us see your face, Lord, and we shall be saved.
Jesus said to his Apostles:
"As you go, make this proclamation:
'The Kingdom of heaven is at hand.'
Cure the sick, raise the dead,
cleanse the lepers, drive out demons.
Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give.
Do not take gold or silver or copper for your belts;
no sack for the journey, or a second tunic,
or sandals, or walking stick.
The laborer deserves his keep.
Whatever town or village you enter, look for a worthy person in it,
and stay there until you leave.
As you enter a house, wish it peace.
If the house is worthy,
let your peace come upon it;
if not, let your peace return to you.
Whoever will not receive you or listen to your wordsC
go outside that house or town and shake the dust from your feet.
Amen, I say to you, it will be more tolerable
for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment
than for that town."

Today’s passage from Hosea uses the analogy to a wayward child. The Gospel is the commissioning of the apostles to go out into the community with both its places of welcoming and its places of trial.
A few weeks ago, I was watching a panel discussion that included a woman who had served as a school principal. She talked about how for a long time she had let people into her office where they would ruminate on their concerns. She discovered that she had a long line of people who wanted to express their feelings and concerns. She felt that this catharsis was helpful, but also felt that things were not improving while a lot of time was being spent on this process. She went on to discuss an insight that changed things. She became aware that the focus needs to be talking to people rather than about people. Instead of having people tell her about problems, she encouraged people to discuss the problem with those concerned and when someone was apprehensive about doing this, she offered to be the facilitator for starting a dialogue. There was also a consideration of what constitutes useful dialogue. Some individuals are not ready to engage in a meaningful conversation and perhaps in those cases one needs to recognize that certain individuals may not be right for a particular team.
When I reflected on today’s readings this panel discussion kept coming to mind. Jesus gives a charge to his disciples. Sharing His message is not an easy task. He recognizes that certain conversations will go nowhere and perhaps in those cases stubbornly continuing is not the appropriate response. He recognizes the importance of an open heart in receiving the disciple’s message. Fortunately, God gives the disciples tools to use in the process, signs to help create that opening. For the disciples, the process requires a willingness to forego worldly rewards and the judgement to know when to move on.
I think of how often I have wasted time talking about issues with others rather than acting to resolve them. I think of how often I have stubbornly persisted when speaking to someone who was not ready to hear what I had to say. I even think about how often I found it easier to talk about God rather than talking to God.
Dear Lord,
The apostles faced a world in need of reform.
Their message met a mixed response.
Still through finding hearts open to change, their message was able to spread.
I find myself living in world in turmoil.
Opinions seem fixed and polarized.
Grant me the insight in seeing where and how hearts are open to change.
Allow me in the efforts of my daily life to be an agent of transformation.

LIVING ONLY FOR HIS KINGDOM
“The reign of God is at hand!” —Matthew 10:7
St. John the Baptizer prefigured Christ’s coming by preaching: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Mt 3:2, RSV-CE). Then Jesus preached: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Mt 4:17, RSV-CE). Finally, Jesus sent out His Church, including us, to “preach as you go, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand’ ” (Mt 10:7, RSV-CE).
Our job and privilege in life is to communicate that:
- God offers us a new system of government: a monarchy; Jesus is the King of this kingdom.
- We must seek first His kingdom and everything else will be added to us (Mt 6:33).
- His kingdom is a matter of “justice, peace, and the joy that is given by the Holy Spirit” (Rm 14:17).
- His kingdom is manifested as His subjects “cure the sick, raise the dead, heal the leprous, expel demons” (Mt 10:8).
- His kingdom, unlike all other governments, will last forever (2 Sm 7:16; Lk 1:32-33).
- We must pray always for the coming of His kingdom in fullness (Mt 6:10).
- We must express our faith in Jesus as we give everything we have to enter His kingdom (Mt 13:44-46).
Are you in His kingdom? When did you decide to accept the invitation to enter His kingdom? Do you proclaim His kingdom? Do you have wounds to prove it? “Seek first His kingdom” (Mt 6:33, RSV-CE).
Prayer: Father, may I live and die for Your kingdom.
Promise: “I drew them with human cords, with bands of love; I fostered them like one who raises an infant to his cheeks.” —Hos 11:4
Praise: Randy, a college athlete, devoted several years of his life to dressing, grooming, and attending to the needs of his paralyzed roommate. The roommate, in turn, taught Randy how to have faith in the Lord.

Do you believe that the Gospel has power to change your life and the lives of others? Jesus gave his disciples a two-fold commission to speak in his name and to act with his power. The core of the Gospel message is quite simple: the kingdom (or reign) of God is imminent! What is the kingdom of God? It is that society of men and women who freely submit to God and who honor him as their Lord and King. In the Lord's prayer we pray for God to reign in our lives and in our world: May your kingdom come and your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Doing the works which Jesus did
Jesus also commissioned his disciples to carry on the works which he did - bringing the healing power and mercy of God to the weary and oppressed. The Gospel has power to set people free from sin, sickness, fear, and oppression. The Lord Jesus will free us from anything that keeps us from loving him and our neighbor with joy and confidence.
Sharing generously what God has given to each one of us
Jesus said to his disciples: Freely you have received, freely give. What they have received from Jesus they must now pass on to others without expecting a favor in return, whether it be in the form of a gift or payment. They must show by their attitude that their first interest is in serving God, not receiving material gain. They must serve without guile, full of charity and peace, and simplicity. They must give their full attention to the proclamation of God's kingdom and not be diverted by other lesser things. They must travel light - only take what was essential and leave behind whatever would distract them - in order to concentrate on the task of speaking the word of God. They must do their work, not for what they can get out of it, but for what they can give freely to others, without expecting special privileges or reward. "Poverty of spirit" frees us from greed and preoccupation with possessions and makes ample room for God's provision. The Lord wants his disciples to be dependent on him and not on themselves.
Support the work of the Gospel with your resources
Secondly, Jesus said: the worker deserves his sustenance. Here we see a double-truth: the worker of God must not be overly-concerned with material things, but the people of God must never fail in their duty to give the worker of God what he or she needs to sustain themselves in the Lord's service. Do you pray for the work of the Gospel and do you support it with your material and financial resources?
Jesus ends his instructions with a warning: If people reject God's invitation and refuse his word, then they bring judgment and condemnation on themselves. When God gives us his word there comes with it the great responsibility to respond. Indifference will not do. We are either for or against God in how we respond to his word. God gives us his word that we may have life - abundant life in him. He wills to work in and through each of us for his glory. God shares his word with us and he commissions us to speak it boldly and simply to others. Do you witness the truth and joy of the Gospel by word and example to those around you?
Lord Jesus, may the joy and truth of the Gospel transform my life that I may witness it to those around me. Grant that I may spread your truth and your light wherever I go.
Psalm 80:1-3, 15-17
1 Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, you who lead Joseph like a flock! You who are enthroned upon the cherubim, shine forth
2 before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh! Stir up your might, and come to save us!
3 Restore us, O God; let your face shine, that we may be saved!
15 the stock which your right hand planted.
16 They have burned it with fire, they have cut it down; may they perish at the rebuke of your countenance!
17 But let your hand be upon the man of your right hand, the son of man whom you have made strong for yourself!
Daily Quote from the Early Church Fathers: The gift of power to reign with the Lord, by Hilary of Poitiers (315-367 AD)
"All the power possessed by the Lord is bestowed upon the apostles! Those who were prefigured in the image and likeness of God in Adam have now received the perfect image and likeness of Christ. They have been given powers in no way different from those of the Lord. Those once earthbound now become heaven-centered. They will proclaim that the kingdom of heaven is at hand, that the image and likeness of God are now appropriated in the company of truth, so that all the holy ones who have been made heirs of heaven may reign with the Lord. Let them cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers and cast out devils. Whatever impairment Adam's body had incurred from being goaded on by Satan, let the apostles wipe away through their sharing in the Lord's power. And that they may fully obtain the likeness of God according to the prophecy in Genesis, they are ordered to give freely what they freely have received (Matthew 10:8). Thus a gift freely bestowed should be freely dispensed." (excerpt from commentary ON MATTHEW 10.4)
