제1독서
아모스 예언서. 3,1-8; 4,11-12

First Reading Introduction
Amos questions the people of God and asks them to give an account of how they have answered God's love.
Reading 1
Am 3:1-8; 4:11-12
Hear this word, O children of Israel, that the LORD pronounces over you,
over the whole family that I brought up from the land of Egypt:
You alone have I favored,
more than all the families of the earth;
Therefore I will punish you
for all your crimes.
Do two walk together
unless they have agreed?
Does a lion roar in the forest
when it has no prey?
Does a young lion cry out from its den
unless it has seized something?
Is a bird brought to earth by a snare
when there is no lure for it?
Does a snare spring up from the ground
without catching anything?
If the trumpet sounds in a city,v will the people not be frightened?
If evil befalls a city,
has not the LORD caused it?
Indeed, the Lord GOD does nothing
without revealing his plan
to his servants, the prophets.
The lion roars—
who will not be afraid!
The Lord GOD speaks—
who will not prophesy!
I brought upon you such upheaval
as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah:
you were like a brand plucked from the fire;
Yet you returned not to me,
says the LORD.
So now I will deal with you in my own way, O Israel!
and since I will deal thus with you,
prepare to meet your God, O Israel.
Responsorial Psalm
Ps 5:4b-6a, 6b-7, 8
R. (9a) Lead me in your justice, Lord.
At dawn I bring my plea expectantly before you.
For you, O God, delight not in wickedness;
no evil man remains with you;
the arrogant may not stand in your sight.
R. Lead me in your justice, Lord.
You hate all evildoers;
you destroy all who speak falsehood;
The bloodthirsty and the deceitful
the LORD abhors.
R. Lead me in your justice, Lord.
But I, because of your abundant mercy,
will enter your house;
I will worship at your holy temple
in fear of you, O LORD.
R. Lead me in your justice, Lord.
Gospel Reading Introduction
We have to recognize the Lord's presence and to keep trusting in him when storms rage within us and in our world as they threaten to engulf us and make us ask: "Lord, where are you?" These may be the storms of temptation, of doubts and fears regarding the faith, of threatened loyalty. The winds of change too may be howling typhoons tossing the bark of the Church around, before we can enter the calm waters of a renewed Church. The Lord is there, we should not be afraid.
Gospel
Mt 8:23-27
As Jesus got into a boat, his disciples followed him.
Suddenly a violent storm came up on the sea,
so that the boat was being swamped by waves;
but he was asleep.
They came and woke him, saying,
“Lord, save us! We are perishing!”
He said to them, “Why are you terrified, O you of little faith?”
Then he got up, rebuked the winds and the sea,
and there was great calm.
The men were amazed and said, “What sort of man is this,
whom even the winds and the sea obey?”
The image of the boat being tossed and turned by the winds and rain is very much an image of the Church. The Church is the refuge from the storm, without which we would perish. And even though the boat may be rocked by world events or even by scandal from within, we know that the Lord Jesus is within the boat, and that He will make sure that none be lost, for He desires that all be saved.
May we stay on board the ship of faith that is the Church. With the Lord as its captain, is there any doubt that we will reach the heavenly harbor?

To Know Which Way the Wind Blows
“You were like a brand plucked from the fire; Yet you returned not to me, says the Lord.” (Amos 4:11)
The shepherd left his flock outside the city gates. More pressing work lies before him. Like other itinerant preachers, he showed up at the temple and spoke to those passing of our sinfulness, the need for atonement, and God’s fathomless mercy.
The priests were wary of this rustic prophet. As long as he lambasted the crimes of foreign nations, they remained calm. Nothing reassures us like the failings of our enemies. But then he got to the crimes of Judah and Israel. How they “sell the just man for silver, and the poor man for a pair of sandals.” Debased and deceitful they desert the God who “plucked this brand” from disaster again and again. “Now,” warned the prophet, “prepare to meet your God.”
Facing our defects can be painful. Amos’ warning was too much for the priests to countenance. They drove the shepherd from the temple to secure their façade.
Amos, the shepherd, unleashed fiery oracles tempered by recognition of God’s mercy. Amos wasn’t a genius. His prophecy did not arise from superhuman powers. His questions were simple to answer once you bother to ask them. Amos stayed close to God and paid attention to what was happening in the world. He did not close his eyes, plug his ears, and avoid difficult topics. It was integrity, not brilliance, that marked his words. He would not accept corruption as “business as usual.” Amos calls out the con men.
The earth abounds with storms in our time. Some days the news is daunting. Will we make it through? Will creatures be crushed by the waves? Is God indifferent to our plight? Jesus says not to be terrified of the storm. Our God is near.

APPOINTMENT WITH GOD
“Prepare to meet your God.” —Amos 4:12
Will we meet God as Judge or as Savior? This question illustrates why it is so critical to prepare to meet God (Am 4:12). The heavenly Father has tirelessly sent messengers, prophets, and teachers to “make straight His paths” into the hearts of all people (see Mt 3:3). God tells His prophets everything so that they might better prepare our hearts (Am 3:7). God has revealed everything necessary for our meeting with Him.
So will we be ready for the meeting with God? Will we have listened? Jesus says that if we don’t listen to His prophets, even a meeting with a person risen from the dead will not touch our hearts (Lk 16:31).
How have you prepared for other important meetings, such as a job interview? Did you dress properly for the occasion? Have you ever prepared for an important date, or a formal dance? You made sure that you looked your very best. Jesus told a parable about someone who did not prepare to meet God (Mt 22:1-14). A man was not properly dressed for the wedding feast of the King. Others declined the chance to meet the King, and didn’t even bother to attend.
Have you prepared to meet your God? Each day of your life is a day to prepare for meeting Him. Cleanse your soul to be its best by repenting and taking part in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Make straight God’s path to your soul (Lk 3:4).
Prayer: Lord, give me an intense desire to meet You every day in the Mass, the Sacraments, and the Scriptures.
Promise: Jesus “stood up and took the winds and the sea to task. Complete calm ensued.” —Mt 8:26
Praise: St. Irenaeus battled heresy without compromise. He gave us a magnificent summary of the Gospel: “What was lost in Adam is regained in Christ” (cf 1 Cor 15:22).
