 오순절이 되었을 때 사도들은 1 모두 한자리에 모여 있었다.

2 그런데 갑자기 하늘에서 거센 바람이 부는 듯한 소리가 나더니,
그들이 앉아 있는 온 집 안을 가득 채웠다.
3 그리고 불꽃 모양의 혀들이 나타나 갈라지면서 각 사람 위에 내려앉았다.
4 그러자 그들은 모두 성령으로 가득 차,
성령께서 표현의 능력을 주시는 대로 다른 언어들로 말하기 시작하였다.
5 그때에 예루살렘에는
세계 모든 나라에서 온 독실한 유다인들이 살고 있었는데,
6 그 말소리가 나자 무리를 지어 몰려왔다.
그리고 제자들이 말하는 것을
저마다 자기 지방 말로 듣고 어리둥절해하였다.
7 그들은 놀라워하고 신기하게 여기며 말하였다.
“지금 말하고 있는 저들은 모두 갈릴래아 사람들이 아닌가?
8 그런데 우리가 저마다 자기가 태어난 지방 말로 듣고 있으니 어찌 된 일인가?
9 파르티아 사람, 메디아 사람, 엘람 사람,

 형제 여러분,

3 성령에 힘입지 않고서는 아무도 “예수님은 주님이시다.” 할 수 없습니다.
4 은사는 여러 가지지만 성령은 같은 성령이십니다.
5 직분은 여러 가지지만 주님은 같은 주님이십니다.
6 활동은 여러 가지지만 모든 사람 안에서
모든 활동을 일으키시는 분은 같은 하느님이십니다.
7 하느님께서 각 사람에게 공동선을 위하여 성령을 드러내 보여 주십니다.
12 몸은 하나이지만 많은 지체를 가지고 있고
몸의 지체는 많지만 모두 한 몸인 것처럼,

제자들은 유다인들이 두려워 문을 모두 잠가 놓고 있었다.
그런데 예수님께서 오시어 가운데에 서시며,
“평화가 너희와 함께!” 하고 그들에게 말씀하셨다.
20 이렇게 말씀하시고 나서 당신의 두 손과 옆구리를 그들에게 보여 주셨다.
제자들은 주님을 뵙고 기뻐하였다.
21 예수님께서 다시 그들에게 이르셨다.
“평화가 너희와 함께!
아버지께서 나를 보내신 것처럼 나도 너희를 보낸다.”
22 이렇게 이르시고 나서 그들에게 숨을 불어넣으며 말씀하셨다.
“성령을 받아라.

When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled,
they were all in one place together.
And suddenly there came from the sky
a noise like a strong driving wind,
and it filled the entire house in which they were.
Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire,
which parted and came to rest on each one of them.
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit
and began to speak in different tongues,
as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.

Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven staying in Jerusalem.
At this sound, they gathered in a large crowd,
but they were confused
because each one heard them speaking in his own language.
They were astounded, and in amazement they asked,
"Are not all these people who are speaking Galileans?
Then how does each of us hear them in his native language?
We are Parthians, Medes, and Elamites,
inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia,
Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia,
Egypt and the districts of Libya near Cyrene,
as well as travelers from Rome,
both Jews and converts to Judaism, Cretans and Arabs,
yet we hear them speaking in our own tongues
of the mighty acts of God."

Brothers and sisters:
No one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit.
There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; 
there are different forms of service but the same Lord;
there are different workings but the same God
who produces all of them in everyone.
To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit
is given for some benefit.

As a body is one though it has many parts,
and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body,
so also Christ.
For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body,
whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons,
and we were all given to drink of one Spirit.

Brothers and sisters, live by the Spirit
and you will certainly not gratify the desire of the flesh.
For the flesh has desires against the Spirit,
and the Spirit against the flesh;
these are opposed to each other,
so that you may not do what you want.

Now the works of the flesh are obvious:
immorality, impurity, lust, idolatry,

 Holy Spirit, kindle in us the fire of your love.

In a world in much need of love and reconciliation, the Holy Spirit arrives like a strong gust of wind to liberate us from our dark places of isolation, loneliness, disappointment, and woundedness.  The Holy Spirit arrives and fills our spaces with hope and the knowledge that we have not been left alone.  The reconciling presence of the Holy Spirit bridges our differences.  The Holy Spirit breaks through our boundaries and walls so we may hear each other and know each other just as we are. 

Holy Spirit, give us courage.

I find myself identifying with the disciples in the Gospel, hiding behind closed doors, afraid to face the world or encounter anyone after experiencing something difficult or painful.  I hide behind closed doors, hoping that everything that caused pain or frightened me will be gone with time.  However, what happens instead is a slow and silent death of oneself caused by relentless fear.  Life is stalled.  “Where is my courage?” I ask myself.  Where is Jesus?  This is where prayer comes in; through prayer, Jesus breathes new life into me and then gifts me with the Holy Spirit.  Accompanied by the Holy Spirit, I find that I can open the locked doors.  I might not be completely confident or courageous when those doors open, but I know that with the persistent love and all-encompassing peace of the Holy Spirit, I am not alone, and neither are you.  Have you felt the presence of the Holy Spirit accompanying you in your life?  When have you accompanied someone needing courage and assurance?

Come, Holy Spirit, fill us with peace.

“Peace be with you,” Jesus says.  It is rare to feel peace for more than a few minutes these days.  All we need to do is turn on the television, get on social media, or encounter someone who tends to push our buttons, and there goes our peace of mind.  However, our experience of the day is much different when we are accompanied by the Holy Spirit.  When we invite the Holy Spirit into every experience, we can do God's works with confidence and courage.  We can begin our day creating the space we need to allow the Holy Spirit to liberate us and empower us. 

My friends, let us invite the Holy Spirit who breaks down the walls of a stubborn heart, heals the broken, melts the frozen, and guides our steps.  We are in much need of the reconciling presence of the Spirit, which draws us into communion with each other, yes, other members of the body of Christ.
Come, Holy Spirit, rest on us, dwell in us, stay with us.

BREATHE ON ME

“All were filled with the Holy Spirit.” —Acts 2:4

On this Pentecost Sunday, Jesus, Who is the same today as He was yesterday (Heb 13:8), is breathing on us and commanding us: “Receive the Holy Spirit” (Jn 20:22). To receive the Spirit and thereby a renewal of our Baptisms and Confirmations, we must repent, forgive, and be forgiven (see Acts 2:38; Mt 6:12; Jn 20:23). Then we will express ourselves “in foreign tongues and make bold proclamation as the Spirit” prompts us (Acts 2:4). We will see a miracle of unity. As the divisions between races, nations, spouses, family members, and church members break down (see Acts 2:8-11; 1 Cor 12:13), the world will believe that God the Father has sent Jesus as the Savior of the world (Jn 17:21). The Holy Spirit will renew the face of the earth (Ps 104:30).

Therefore, “come, Holy Spirit, come!...Heal our wounds, our strength renew; on our dryness pour Your dew; wash the stains of guilt away. Bend the stubborn heart and will; melt the frozen, warm the chill; guide the steps that go astray” (Pentecost sequence). Come, Holy Spirit of Pentecost!

Prayer:  Father, like Mary, may I visit others and bring to them the Holy Spirit and a new Pentecost (see Lk 1:39ff).

Promise:  “No one can say: ‘Jesus is Lord,’ except in the Holy Spirit.” —1 Cor 12:3

Praise:  “When You send forth Your Spirit...You renew the face of the earth” (Ps 104:30).

 Do you know and experience in your own life the gift and power of the Holy Spirit? After his death and resurrection Jesus promised to give his disciples the gift of the Holy Spirit. He said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit! (John 20:22) Jesus knew that his disciples would need the power of the Holy Spirit to carry out the mission entrusted to them. The gift of the Holy Spirit was conditional upon the ascension of Jesus to the right hand of the Father. That is why Jesus instructed the apostles to wait in Jerusalem until you are clothed with power from on high (Luke 24:49). Why did they need power from on high? The Gospels tell us that Jesus was filled with the Holy Spirit when he was baptized at the Jordan River:

"And John bore witness, 'I saw the Spirit descend as a dove from heaven, and it remained on him... this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit'" (John 1:32,33; Mark 1:8; Matthew 3:11).

"And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan, and was led by the Spirit for forty days in the wilderness... and Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee" (Luke 4:1,14).

Just as Jesus was anointed with the Spirit at the beginning of his ministry, so the disciples needed the anointing of the Holy Spirit to carry out the mission entrusted to them by Jesus. The Holy Spirit is given to all who are baptized into Jesus Christ to enable us to live a new way of life - a life of love, peace, joy, and righteousness (Romans 14:17). The Holy Spirit fills our hearts with the love of God (Romans 5:7), and he gives us the strength and courage we need in order to live as faith-filled disciples of the Lord Jesus. The Spirit helps us in our weakness (Romans 8:26), and enables us to grow in spiritual freedom - freedom from doubt, fear, and from slavery to our unruly desires (2 Corinthians 3:17; Romans 8:21). The Spirit instructs us in the ways of God, and guides us in living according to God's will. The Spirit is the source and giver of all holiness. Isaiah foretold the seven-fold gifts that the Spirit would give: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord (Isaiah 11:2).

The gift of Pentecost - the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, and the spiritual gifts and blessings of God - are made possible through the death, resurrection, and ascension of the Lord Jesus. After his resurrection Jesus "breathed" on his disciples and gave them the Holy Spirit. Just as God breathed life into Adam, so the gift of the Holy Spirit is an impartation of "new life" for his people. With the gift of the Holy Spirit a new creation begins. God recreates us for his glory. Jesus' gift of peace to his disciples was more than an absence of trouble. His peace included the forgiveness of sins and the fullness of everything good. Do you want power to live a faith-filled life as a disciple of Jesus? Ask the Father to fill you with the power of his Holy Spirit (Luke 11:13).

Basil the Great (329-379 AD), an early church father, explains the role of the Holy Spirit in our lives:

"The Spirit restores paradise to us and the way to heaven and adoption as children of God; he instills confidence that we may call God truly Father and grants us the grace of Christ to be children of the light and to enjoy eternal glory. In a word, he bestows the fullness of blessings in this world and the next; for we may contemplate now in the mirror of faith the promised things we shall someday enjoy. If this is the foretaste, what must the reality be? If these are the first fruits, what must be the harvest?" (From the treatise by Basil on The Holy Spirit)

The Lord Jesus offers each one of us the gift and power of his Holy Spirit. He wants to make our faith strong, give us hope that endures, and a love that never grows cold. He never refuses to give his Spirit to those who ask with expectant faith. Jesus instructed his disciples to ask confidently for the gift of the Spirit: "If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" (Luke 11:13). Do you thirst for God and for the abundant life he offers through the gift of his Spirit?

Lord Jesus, I thank you for the gift of Pentecost and for the new life you offer in the Holy Spirit. Fill me with your Holy Spirit and set my heart ablaze with the fire of your love that I may serve you in joy and freedom.

"To the Hebrew people, now freed from Egypt, the law was given on Mount Sinai fifty days after the immolation of the paschal lamb. Similarly, after the passion of Christ in which the true Lamb of God was killed, just fifty days after his resurrection, the Holy Spirit fell upon the apostles and the whole group of believers.
