루카. 1,39-56
39 그 무렵 마리아는 길을 떠나, 서둘러 유다 산악 지방에 있는 한 고을로 갔다.
40 그리고 즈카르야의 집에 들어가 엘리사벳에게 인사하였다.
41 엘리사벳이 마리아의 인사말을 들을 때 그의 태 안에서 아기가 뛰놀았다.
엘리사벳은 성령으로 가득 차 42 큰 소리로 외쳤다.
“당신은 여인들 가운데에서 가장 복되시며 당신 태중의 아기도 복되십니다.
43 내 주님의 어머니께서 저에게 오시다니 어찌 된 일입니까?
44 보십시오, 당신의 인사말 소리가 제 귀에 들리자
저의 태 안에서 아기가 즐거워 뛰놀았습니다.
45 행복하십니다, 주님께서 하신 말씀이 이루어지리라고 믿으신 분!”
46 그러자 마리아가 말하였다. “내 영혼이 주님을 찬송하고
47 내 마음이 나의 구원자 하느님 안에서 기뻐 뛰니
48 그분께서 당신 종의 비천함을 굽어보셨기 때문입니다.
이제부터 과연 모든 세대가 나를 행복하다 하리니
49 전능하신 분께서 나에게 큰일을 하셨기 때문입니다.
그분의 이름은 거룩하고
50 그분의 자비는 대대로 당신을 경외하는 이들에게 미칩니다.
51 그분께서는 당신 팔로 권능을 떨치시어
마음속 생각이 교만한 자들을 흩으셨습니다.
52 통치자들을 왕좌에서 끌어내리시고 비천한 이들을 들어 높이셨으며

56 마리아는 석 달가량 엘리사벳과 함께 지내다가 자기 집으로 돌아갔다.

On that day, it shall be said to Jerusalem:
Fear not, O Zion, be not discouraged!

Gospel
Mary set out
and traveled to the hill country in haste
to a town of Judah,
where she entered the house of Zechariah
and greeted Elizabeth.
When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting,
the infant leaped in her womb,
and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit,
cried out in a loud voice and said,
“Most blessed are you among women,
and blessed is the fruit of your womb.
And how does this happen to me,
that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears,
the infant in my womb leaped for joy.
Blessed are you who believed
that what was spoken to you by the Lord
would be fulfilled.”
And Mary said:
“My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord;
my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.
From this day all generations will call me blessed:
the Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his Name.
He has mercy on those who fear him
in every generation.
He has shown the strength of his arm,
he has scattered the proud in their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
and has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.
He has come to the help of his servant Israel
for he has remembered his promise of mercy,
the promise he made to our fathers,
to Abraham and his children for ever.”
Mary remained with her about three months
and then returned to her home.

When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and said,

It had been a quiet morning in our sleepy town when I heard my neighbor, Elizabeth shriek. Alarmed, I ran to see what was wrong. Elizabeth had been so worried since she learned about her cousin Mary’s unconventional pregnancy. Was she okay?
But this shriek sounded joyful!
Then I saw Elizabeth embracing Mary as Mary entered her house. “Most blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?”
Was I hearing Elizabeth correctly? Had Mary really ridden a donkey several days to get away from local gossip about her unmarried pregnancy?
I don’t know what happened next, but I would never forget what I had seen and heard.
I wondered what Elizabeth knew about Mary’s baby that she hadn’t told me. Surely she would tell me later. But Mary had found shelter with her beloved cousin. That was enough for now.
The gift of Ignatian imaginative prayer helps me picture this beautiful scene of women supporting each other through a time of crisis for both. I love the lessons that these two amazing women teach us.
Mary and Elizabeth demonstrate a way to cope with the difficulties of our own lives and those we love that is both instinctive and intentional.
It must have been hard for Mary to ride several days on a donkey to pay an extended surprise visit to her cousin even though she knew she would be welcome. Would she cause a local gossip problem for Elizabeth? But Mary needed a respite badly enough to take the risk. Anyone who has lived in a community where everyone knows everyone else’s business understands.
From Mary we learn to seek the gift of other people that God has given us.
From Elizabeth we learn to give others the gift of unconditional love and support when they need it most – a concrete expression of God’s unconditional love for us.
Frequently we are called to play each role. Mary and Elizabeth inspire us to risk loving others unconditionally no matter what the circumstances and to reach out to others to give them this same opportunity.
Blessings to those who need such support now and to those who are providing it. Surely Mary and Elizabeth are with you.

FIRE UP
“Do not grow slack but be fervent in spirit; He Whom you serve is the Lord.” —Romans 12:11
When you received the Holy Spirit, the devil immediately tried to extinguish the flame (1 Thes 5:19). At the same time, the Lord stirred the Holy Spirit into an even greater flame in your life (2 Tm 1:6). Yield to the Spirit. Put on the lampstand of your life the gifts and fruit of the Spirit (Lk 8:16). The Lord will continue to light your fire.
With Mary, go into the hill country (Lk 1:39) and give as a gift what has been given to you (Mt 10:8). The Spirit’s flame will grow in you while the Zechariahs and Elizabeths in your life are filled with the Spirit and prophesy and the babies leap for joy (Lk 1:41). Your being will proclaim the greatness of the Lord and find joy in God your Savior (Lk 1:46-47).
Let Mother Mary help you trust that the Lord’s words to you will be fulfilled (Lk 1:45). “Give, and it shall be given to you. Good measure pressed down, shaken together, running over, will they pour into the fold of your garment. For the measure you measure with will be measured back to you” (Lk 6:38). It is in giving the Spirit that we receive.
Prayer: Father, give the Holy Spirit to me and through me. Mother Mary, pray for me.
Promise: “He will rejoice over you with gladness, and renew you in His love, He will sing joyfully because of you, as one sings at festivals.” —Zep 3:17-18
Praise: “But who am I that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” (Lk 1:43) Holy Spirit, thank You for inspiring St. Elizabeth to teach us the truth of Mary’s divine maternity.

In his Last Supper discourse with his beloved disciples Jesus speaks of his glory and the glory of his Father. What is this glory? It is the cross which Jesus speaks of here and the willing offering of his life for us. How does the cross reveal this glory? In the cross God reveals the breadth of his great love for sinners and the power of Jesus' redemptive sacrifice which cancels the debt of sin and reverses the curse of our condemnation (Romans 8:1). Jesus gave his Father the supreme honor and glory through his obedience and willingness to go to the cross for our sake. In times of defense the greatest honor belongs not to those who fought and survived but to those who gave the supreme sacrifice of their own lives for their fellow citizens.The Lord Jesus freely and willingly offered up his life out of obedience to his Father and love for us.
Jesus reveals the glory of God to us
Jesus speaks of the Father bringing glory to the Son through the great mystery of the Incarnation - the eternal Word who became flesh for our sake (John 1:14) - and the Cross of Christ which won for us pardon, freedom, and new life in the Holy Spirit. God the Father gave us his only begotten Son to set us free from slavery to sin, guilt, and condemnation. His sacrificial death brings us new life - the abundant life of peace and joy which God wishes to share with each one of us. There is no greater proof of God's love for each and every person on the face of the earth than the Cross of Jesus Christ. In the cross we see a new way of love - a love that is merciful, sacrificial, and generous beyond measure.
Jesus offers abundant life without end
Jesus offers us eternal life. What is eternal life? It is more than simply a life without end or an eternal state of being. Science and medicine look for ways to extend the duration of human life - but God offers us something vastly greater and more surpassing than a simple extension of physical life. Eternal life is qualitative more than quantitative. To have eternal life is to have the very life of God within us. When we possess eternal life we experience here and now something of God's majesty, glory, and holiness which he shares with us. Through the gift and working of the Holy Spirit, God fills us with the abundant fruit of his peace, joy and love.
We can know God personally
Jesus also speaks of the knowledge of God. Jesus tells his disciples that they can know the only true God. Knowledge of God is not simply limited to knowing something about God, but we can know God personally and be united with God in a personal relationship of love and friendship. The essence of Christianity, and what makes it distinct from Judaism and other religions, is the personal and experiential knowledge of God as our eternal Father - the one who knew us before creation (Ephesians 1:4 and Romans 8:29) and who knit us in our mother's womb (Psalm 139:13 and Jeremiah 1:5). Jesus makes it possible for each of us to personally know God as our Father. To see Jesus is to see what God is like.
A unity of love that endures forever
In Jesus Christ we see the perfect love of God - a God who cares intensely and who yearns over men and women, loving them to the point of laying down his life for them upon the Cross. Jesus is the revelation of God - a God who loves us completely, unconditionally and perfectly. Do you hunger to know God personally and to be united with the Father in his Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, through the unity of the Holy Spirit who dwells with us? The Lord Jesus invites each of us to enter more deeply into a personal relationship of love and oneness of mind, heart, and spirit with the eternal Father, Son, and Holy Spirit who created us in love for love.
If only I possessed the grace, good Jesus, to be utterly at one with you! Amidst all the variety of worldly things around me, Lord, the only thing I crave is unity with you. You are all my soul needs. Unite, dear friend of my heart, this unique little soul of mine to your perfect goodness.You are all mine; when shall I be yours? Lord Jesus, my beloved, be the magnet of my heart; clasp, press, unite me for ever to your sacred heart. You have made me for yourself; make me one with you.
