Reading 1

1 Cor 15:1-8

I am reminding you, brothers and sisters,

of the Gospel I preached to you,

which you indeed received and in which you also stand.

Through it you are also being saved,

if you hold fast to the word I preached to you,

unless you believed in vain.

For I handed on to you as of first importance what I also received:

that Christ died for our sins

in accordance with the Scriptures;

that he was buried;

that he was raised on the third day

in accordance with the Scriptures;

that he appeared to Cephas, then to the Twelve.

After that, he appeared to more

than five hundred brothers and sisters at once,

most of whom are still living,

though some have fallen asleep.

After that he appeared to James,

then to all the Apostles.

Last of all, as to one born abnormally,

he appeared to me.

Responsorial Psalm

Ps 19:2-3, 4-5

R. (5) Their message goes out through all the earth.

or:

R. Alleluia.

The heavens declare the glory of God;

and the firmament proclaims his handiwork.

Day pours out the word to day;

and night to night imparts knowledge.

R. Their message goes out through all the earth.

or:

R. Alleluia.

Not a word nor a discourse

whose voice is not heard;

Through all the earth their voice resounds,

and to the ends of the world, their message.

R. Their message goes out through all the earth.

or:

R. Alleluia.

Gospel

Jn 14:6-14

Jesus said to Thomas, “I am the way and the truth and the life.

No one comes to the Father except through me.

If you know me, then you will also know my Father.

From now on you do know him and have seen him.”

Philip said to him,

“Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.”

Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you for so long a time

and you still do not know me, Philip?

Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.

How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me?

The words that I speak to you I do not speak on my own.

The Father who dwells in me is doing his works.

Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me,

or else, believe because of the works themselves.

Amen, amen, I say to you,

whoever believes in me will do the works that I do,

and will do greater ones than these,

because I am going to the Father.

And whatever you ask in my name, I will do,

so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

If you ask anything of me in my name, I will do it.”

Philip said to him, “Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.”  What a gift Philip gives to us in the here and now.  As he continues to question, despite Jesus’ response to Thomas (I am the Way the True and the Light), I have an opportunity to connect my faith to that of the apostles, the witnesses of the ministry, death, and resurrection of Christ.  Sometimes, I hear a rebuke for lack of faith in reading these words.  This time, I hear a prompting of the Holy Spirit, nudging both Thomas and Philip to question.  The questions open the door for me to become more aware of two things.

First, I can trust Jesus with all of my questions.  If I have doubts or do not understand, he will not reject me but patiently respond with a fuller explanation.  He will not demand that I believe; instead, he will reassure me of his presence and remind me that he longs for my companionship.

Secondly, he knew some 2000 years following his earthly ministry, the world’s darkness would weigh heavily on his followers.  Today I notice the war in Ukraine, human trafficking, and the lack of respect for all persons’ equal dignity, all leading me to ask Master, where are you, and where is the Father?

The answers to my questions and doubts do not come as a bolt of lightning knocking me off my chair.  Reading about the doubles of the witnesses, Thomas, Philip, and others, give me the courage to ask my questions.  My question, Where are you, is answered when I take the time to notice the work of everyone committed to building God’s Kingdom.

In times of doubt, I have learned to stop, recall the witnesses’ stories, and seek what is life-giving.  The risen Christ, who declares, I am the way, the truth, and the life.

“IT IS TRUE!” (LK 24:34)

“Next He was seen by James; then by all the apostles.” —1 Corinthians 15:7

The risen Christ “was seen by Cephas, then by the Twelve. After that He was seen by five hundred brothers at once, most of whom are still alive, although some have fallen asleep. Next He was seen by James; then by all the apostles. Last of all He was seen by” Paul (1 Cor 15:5-8). These are only a few of many eyewitnesses who saw Jesus risen from the dead. Moreover, well over a billion people from all nations for about two thousand years have believed in Jesus’ Resurrection. His Resurrection is one of the most confirmed facts in history.

Furthermore, the works of the risen Christ testify that He is risen from the dead (see Jn 14:11). Anything we ask in Jesus’ name He will do (Jn 14:14). Jesus’ works in response to our asking show He is alive.

Throughout Christian history, the lives of millions of people have been dramatically changed by meeting the risen Christ. For example, how can we explain the change in Sts. Philip, James, the other apostles, and countless other saints and martyrs? Fearful, selfish men and women suddenly became fearless, self-sacrificing servants of God who even gave their lives for the Lord. Why would anyone give his life for someone he does not even know? They must have met the risen Christ.

Jesus is risen (Lk 24:6). To deny this is to deny reality. Therefore, meet the risen Christ, believe in Him, live and die for Him, and be His witness.

Prayer:  Father, may I live as though I saw a dead Man come out of the grave.

Promise:  “I solemnly assure you, the man who has faith in Me will do the works I do, and greater far than these.” —Jn 14:12

Praise:  “Philip sought out Nathanael and told him, ‘We have found the One Moses spoke of in the law — the prophets too — Jesus, son of Joseph, from Nazareth’ ” (Jn 1:45). St. Philip, pray for us!

Do you hunger for the bread of life? The Jews had always regarded the manna in the wilderness as the bread of God (Psalm 78:24, Exodus 16:15). There was a strong Rabbinic belief that when the Messiah came he would give manna from heaven. This was the supreme work of Moses. Now the Jewish leaders were demanding that Jesus produce manna from heaven as proof to his claim to be the Messiah. Jesus responds by telling them that it was not Moses who gave the manna, but God. And the manna given to Moses and the people was not the real bread from heaven, but only a symbol of the bread to come.

Jesus then makes the claim which only God can make: I am the bread of life. The bread which Jesus offers is none else than the very life of God. This is the true bread which can truly satisfy the hunger in our hearts. The manna from heaven prefigured the superabundance of the unique bread of the Eucharist or Lord's Supper which Jesus gave to his disciples on the eve of his sacrifice. The manna in the wilderness sustained the Israelites on their journey to the Promised Land. It could not produce eternal life for the Israelites.

The bread which Jesus offers his disciples sustains us not only on our journey to the heavenly paradise, it gives us the abundant supernatural life of God which sustains us both now and for all eternity. When we receive from the Lord's table we unite ourselves to Jesus Christ, who makes us sharers in his body and blood and partakers of his divine life. Ignatius of Antioch (35-107 A.D.) calls it the "one bread that provides the medicine of immortality, the antidote for death, and the food that makes us live for ever in Jesus Christ" (Ad Eph. 20,2). This supernatural food is healing for both body and soul and strength for our journey heavenward. Do you hunger for God and for the food which produces everlasting life?

Lord Jesus Christ, you are the bread of life. You alone can satisfy the hunger in my heart. May I always find in you, the true bread from heaven, the source of life and nourishment I need to sustain me on my journey to the promised land of heaven.

Psalm 31:3-8, 19-21

3 Yes, you are my rock and my fortress; for your name's sake lead me and guide me,
4 take me out of the net which is hidden for me, for you are my refuge.
5 Into your hand I commit my spirit; you have redeemed me, O LORD, faithful God.
6 You hate those who pay regard to vain idols; but I trust in the LORD.
7 I will rejoice and be glad for your steadfast love, because you have seen my affliction, you have taken heed of my adversities,
8 and have not delivered me into the hand of the enemy; you have set my feet in a broad place.
19 O how abundant is your goodness, which you have laid up for those who fear you, and wrought for those who take refuge in you, in the sight of the sons of men!
20 In the covert of your presence you hide them from the plots of men; you hold them safe under your shelter from the strife of tongues.
21 Blessed be the LORD, for he has wondrously shown his steadfast love to me when I was beset as in a besieged city.

Daily Quote from the Early Church Fathers: Trusting in the Lord, by Augustine of Hippo, 354-430 A.D.

"If you put your trust in money, you are paying futile regard to vain things; if you put your trust in high office or some exalted rank in human government, you are paying futile regard to vain things... When you put your trust in all these, either you expire and leave them all behind, or they will crumble while you are still alive, and what you trusted will have let you down... For my part, I do not put my trust in empty things as they do or pay futile regard to them; I have put my trust in the Lord." (excerpt from Exposition on the Psalms 31,12)
