제1독서
사도행전. 3,1-10
그 무렵 1 베드로와 요한이 오후 세 시 기도 시간에 성전으로 올라가는데,
2 모태에서부터 불구자였던 사람 하나가 들려 왔다.
성전에 들어가는 이들에게 자선을 청할 수 있도록,
사람들이 그를 날마다 ‘아름다운 문’이라고 하는 성전 문 곁에
들어다 놓았던 것이다.
3 그가 성전에 들어가려는 베드로와 요한을 보고 자선을 청하였다.
4 베드로는 요한과 함께 그를 유심히 바라보고 나서,
“우리를 보시오.” 하고 말하였다.
5 그가 무엇인가를 얻으리라고 기대하며 그들을 쳐다보는데,
6 베드로가 말하였다.
“나는 은도 금도 없습니다. 그러나 내가 가진 것을 당신에게 주겠습니다.
나자렛 사람 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 말합니다.
일어나 걸으시오.”
7 그러면서 그의 오른손을 잡아 일으켰다.
그러자 그가 즉시 발과 발목이 튼튼해져서
8 벌떡 일어나 걸었다.
그리고 그들과 함께 성전으로 들어가면서,
걷기도 하고 껑충껑충 뛰기도 하고 하느님을 찬미하기도 하였다.
9 온 백성은 그가 걷기도 하고 하느님을 찬미하기도 하는 것을 보고,
10 또 그가 성전의 ‘아름다운 문’ 곁에 앉아 자선을 청하던 사람이라는 것을 알고,
그에게 일어난 일로 경탄하고 경악하였다.

<빵을 떼실 때에 예수님을 알아보았다.>
루카. 24,13-35
주간 첫날 바로 그날 예수님의 13 제자들 가운데 두 사람이
예루살렘에서 예순 스타디온 떨어진 엠마오라는 마을로 가고 있었다.
14 그들은 그동안 일어난 모든 일에 관하여 서로 이야기하였다.
15 그렇게 이야기하고 토론하는데,
바로 예수님께서 가까이 가시어 그들과 함께 걸으셨다.
16 그들은 눈이 가리어 그분을 알아보지 못하였다.
17 예수님께서 그들에게 “걸어가면서 무슨 말을 서로 주고받느냐?” 하고 물으시자,
그들은 침통한 표정을 한 채 멈추어 섰다.
18 그들 가운데 한 사람, 클레오파스라는 이가 예수님께,
“예루살렘에 머물렀으면서 이 며칠 동안 그곳에서 일어난 일을
혼자만 모른다는 말입니까?” 하고 말하였다.
19 예수님께서 “무슨 일이냐?” 하시자 그들이 그분께 말하였다.
“나자렛 사람 예수님에 관한 일입니다.
그분은 하느님과 온 백성 앞에서,
행동과 말씀에 힘이 있는 예언자셨습니다.
20 그런데 우리의 수석 사제들과 지도자들이 그분을 넘겨,
사형 선고를 받아 십자가에 못 박히시게 하였습니다.
21 우리는 그분이야말로 이스라엘을 해방하실 분이라고 기대하였습니다.
그 일이 일어난 지도 벌써 사흘째가 됩니다.
22 그런데 우리 가운데 몇몇 여자가 우리를 깜짝 놀라게 하였습니다.
그들이 새벽에 무덤으로 갔다가,
23 그분의 시신을 찾지 못하고 돌아와서 하는 말이,
천사들의 발현까지 보았는데
그분께서 살아 계시다고 천사들이 일러 주더랍니다.
24 그래서 우리 동료 몇 사람이 무덤에 가서 보니
그 여자들이 말한 그대로였고, 그분은 보지 못하였습니다.”
25 그때에 예수님께서 그들에게 이르셨다. “아, 어리석은 자들아!
예언자들이 말한 모든 것을 믿는 데에 마음이 어찌 이리 굼뜨냐?
26 그리스도는 그러한 고난을 겪고서
자기의 영광 속에 들어가야 하는 것이 아니냐?”
27 그리고 이어서 모세와 모든 예언자로부터 시작하여
성경 전체에 걸쳐 당신에 관한 기록들을 그들에게 설명해 주셨다.
28 그들이 찾아가던 마을에 가까이 이르렀을 때,
예수님께서는 더 멀리 가려고 하시는 듯하였다.
29 그러자 그들은 “저희와 함께 묵으십시오.
저녁때가 되어 가고 날도 이미 저물었습니다.” 하며 그분을 붙들었다.
그래서 예수님께서는 그들과 함께 묵으시려고 그 집에 들어가셨다.
30 그들과 함께 식탁에 앉으셨을 때, 예수님께서는 빵을 들고 찬미를 드리신 다음
그것을 떼어 그들에게 나누어 주셨다.
31 그러자 그들의 눈이 열려 예수님을 알아보았다.
그러나 그분께서는 그들에게서 사라지셨다.
32 그들은 서로 말하였다.
“길에서 우리에게 말씀하실 때나 성경을 풀이해 주실 때
속에서 우리 마음이 타오르지 않았던가!”
33 그들이 곧바로 일어나 예루살렘으로 돌아가 보니 열한 제자와 동료들이 모여,
34 “정녕 주님께서 되살아나시어 시몬에게 나타나셨다.” 하고 말하고 있었다.
35 그들도 길에서 겪은 일과 빵을 떼실 때에
그분을 알아보게 된 일을 이야기해 주었다.

Peter and John were going up to the temple area
for the three o’clock hour of prayer.
And a man crippled from birth was carried
and placed at the gate of the temple called “the Beautiful Gate” every day
to beg for alms from the people who entered the temple.
When he saw Peter and John about to go into the temple,
he asked for alms.
But Peter looked intently at him, as did John,
and said, “Look at us.”
He paid attention to them, expecting to receive something from them.
Peter said, “I have neither silver nor gold,
but what I do have I give you:
in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazorean, rise and walk.”
Then Peter took him by the right hand and raised him up,
and immediately his feet and ankles grew strong.
He leaped up, stood, and walked around,
and went into the temple with them,
walking and jumping and praising God.
When all the people saw him walking and praising God,
they recognized him as the one
who used to sit begging at the Beautiful Gate of the temple,
and they were filled with amazement and astonishment
at what had happened to him.

Gospel
That very day, the first day of the week,
two of Jesus’ disciples were going
to a village seven miles from Jerusalem called Emmaus,
and they were conversing about all the things that had occurred.
And it happened that while they were conversing and debating,
Jesus himself drew near and walked with them,
but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him.
He asked them,
“What are you discussing as you walk along?”
They stopped, looking downcast.
One of them, named Cleopas, said to him in reply,
“Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem
who does not know of the things
that have taken place there in these days?”
And he replied to them, “What sort of things?”
They said to him,
“The things that happened to Jesus the Nazarene,
who was a prophet mighty in deed and word
before God and all the people,
how our chief priests and rulers both handed him over
to a sentence of death and crucified him.
But we were hoping that he would be the one to redeem Israel ;
and besides all this,
it is now the third day since this took place.
Some women from our group, however, have astounded us:
they were at the tomb early in the morning
and did not find his Body;
they came back and reported
that they had indeed seen a vision of angels
who announced that he was alive.
Then some of those with us went to the tomb
and found things just as the women had described,
but him they did not see.”
And he said to them, “Oh, how foolish you are!
How slow of heart to believe all that the prophets spoke!
Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things
and enter into his glory?”
Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets,
he interpreted to them what referred to him
in all the Scriptures.
As they approached the village to which they were going,
he gave the impression that he was going on farther.
But they urged him, “Stay with us,
for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over.”
So he went in to stay with them.
And it happened that, while he was with them at table,
he took bread, said the blessing,
broke it, and gave it to them.
With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him,
but he vanished from their sight.
Then they said to each other,
“Were not our hearts burning within us
while he spoke to us on the way and opened the Scriptures to us?”
So they set out at once and returned to Jerusalem
where they found gathered together
the Eleven and those with them who were saying,
“The Lord has truly been raised and has appeared to Simon!”
Then the two recounted what had taken place on the way
and how he was made known to them in the breaking of the bread.

The Road to Emmaus . . . this phrase immediately makes me think of Jesus walking with us on a daily basis. Yet, we (I) do not have the eyes to see and the ears to hear. We are negligent in not seeing Jesus in our presence. Rather we give up hope and stay disgruntled. Not unlike Cleopas and the other companion, we have our own expectations of what should be – in their case that Jesus was the Messiah to free them and certainly if he was crucified, he could not be the son of God. So, in these disciples’ eyes (closed as they are) Jesus was merely a prophet – no more, no less. I can imagine walking next to them and hearing the banter – the disappointment, the feeling that they had been “had.” All the hopes for the future taken away at the Cross. For them, they may as well just go home to Emmaus. All this hype was for naught. Without the abiding faith, their eyes were, indeed, closed.
Grumbling along the way, they encounter Jesus (unbeknownst to them). When Jesus asks what they were talking about, they are astounded that there could be someone that didn’t know what had happened in the last few days. As they recount the last few days, their disbelief and lack of faith is nearly palpable as they tell with skepticism about what the women found earlier that morning. They are limited in their comprehension of what took place. Clearly, negating what the angels said to the faithful women just that morning, they are just trudging along dissatisfied with the outcome. Jesus chastises them as he states:
Oh, how foolish you are!
How slow of heart to believe all that the prophets spoke!
Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things
and enter into his glory?
We are back to the concept of faith – it appears that as soon as things didn’t go as expected, these travelers were willing to just negate everything else that happened. Yet, Jesus, the consummate teacher, patiently relates to them all the teachings that have preceded his coming. To their credit, they are willing to listen to this stranger and even want him to stay with them and talk more. Their faith is beginning to strength and appropriately in the breaking of the bread are their eyes opened.
Sometimes I wonder what it takes to get my eyes open – this has been a hard semester for a variety of reasons and I have struggled with my own faith – not so much the basic belief in Jesus and his redemption for us – just how to deal with this world that seems to be falling down around me – things in my career path (approaching retirement with a definite date is scary) that consistently seem to be no win scenarios, challenges in relationships on various levels, and the global state of affairs. I want to just be enveloped in the arms of Jesus and know that everything will be okay. I can know that on a certain level, but I need eyes that see and ears that hear.
Remembering all that has taken place in the resurrection should provide that comfort – I just need to lean into it . . . .

GIVING LIFE TO A “CULTURE OF DEATH”
“When the people saw him moving and giving praise to God, they recognized him as that beggar who used to sit at the Beautiful Gate of the temple. They were struck with astonishment — utterly stupefied at what had happened to him.” —Acts 3:9-10
Fifty days after Jesus’ Resurrection, about three thousand people believed that He was risen from the dead and that He would also raise from the dead those who believed in Him (see Jn 6:40). The rest of the people of the world were confused and enslaved by their ignorance of the afterlife and their fear of death (Heb 2:15). How could a few thousand people reach the rest of the world with the Good News of Jesus risen? We currently find ourselves in a similar situation. Today, the Lord is calling the two billion Christians in the world to reach six billion who do not know or believe in Jesus, “the Resurrection and the Life” (Jn 11:25).
In a few short years, the early Church reached millions of people with the Good News of the risen Jesus. They did this by the power of the Holy Spirit. In the Spirit, they preached the Good News of Jesus. Signs, wonders, and healings accompanied their preaching (Mk 16:17-18). Sometimes the Lord first healed people to give the Church an opening for proclaiming the risen Christ (see Acts 3:11-12). Often the Lord punctuated the Church’s preaching with a healing as an exclamation point.
Let’s reach our “culture of death” with the message of resurrection and life. Receive the Holy Spirit! Proclaim God’s Word! Heal in Jesus’ name (see Acts 3:6). Jesus is risen! Alleluia!
Prayer: Father, I will do anything to reach as many as possible with the Good News of Jesus risen (see 1 Cor 9:19).
Promise: “Were not our hearts burning inside us as He talked to us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?” —Lk 24:32
Praise: Praise: “You will show me the path of life, fullness of joys in Your presence, the delights at Your right hand forever” (Ps 16:11).

Why was it difficult for the disciples to recognize the risen Lord? Jesus' death scattered his disciples and shattered their hopes and dreams. They had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. They saw the cross as defeat and could not comprehend the empty tomb until the Lord Jesus appeared to them and gave them understanding.
Do you doubt the good news that Jesus rose to give you new life?
Jesus chided the disciples on the road to Emmaus for their slowness of heart to believe what the Scriptures had said concerning the Messiah. They did not recognize the risen Jesus until he had broken bread with them. Do you recognize the Lord in his word and in the breaking of the bread?
St. Augustine of Hippo (354-430 AD) reflects on the dimness of their perception:
"They were so disturbed when they saw him hanging on the cross that they forgot his teaching, did not look for his resurrection, and failed to keep his promises in mind" (Sermon 235.1).
"Their eyes were obstructed, that they should not recognize him until the breaking of the bread. And thus, in accordance with the state of their minds, which was still ignorant of the truth - that the Christ would die and rise again, their eyes were similarly hindered. It was not that the truth himself was misleading them, but rather that they were themselves unable to perceive the truth." (From The Harmony of the Gospels, 3.25.72)
How often do we fail to recognize the Lord when he speaks to our hearts and opens his mind to us? The Risen Lord is ever ready to speak his word to us and to give us understanding of his ways. Do you listen attentively to the Word of God and allow his word to change and transform you?
Lord Jesus Christ, open the eyes of my heart to recognize your presence with me and to understand the truth of your saving word. Nourish me with your life-giving word and with the bread of life.
