Wednesday of Holy Week
Daily Mass : http://www.catholictv.com/shows/daily-mass
Reading 1
Is 50:4-9a
a well-trained tongue,
That I might know how to speak to the weary
a word that will rouse them.
Morning after morning
he opens my ear that I may hear;
And I have not rebelled,
have not turned back.
I gave my back to those who beat me,
my cheeks to those who plucked my beard;
My face I did not shield
from buffets and spitting.
The Lord GOD is my help,
therefore I am not disgraced;
I have set my face like flint,
knowing that I shall not be put to shame.
He is near who upholds my right;
if anyone wishes to oppose me,
let us appear together.
Who disputes my right?
Let him confront me.
See, the Lord GOD is my help;
who will prove me wrong?
Responsorial Psalm
Ps 69:8-10, 21-22, 31 and 33-34
For your sake I bear insult,
and shame covers my face.
I have become an outcast to my brothers,
a stranger to my mother's sons,
because zeal for your house consumes me,
and the insults of those who blaspheme you fall upon me.
R. Lord, in your great love, answer me.
Insult has broken my heart, and I am weak,
I looked for sympathy, but there was none;
for consolers, not one could I find.
Rather they put gall in my food,
and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.
R. Lord, in your great love, answer me.
I will praise the name of God in song,
and I will glorify him with thanksgiving:
"See, you lowly ones, and be glad;
you who seek God, may your hearts revive!
For the LORD hears the poor,
and his own who are in bonds he spurns not."
R. Lord, in your great love, answer me.
Gospel
Mt 26:14-25
went to the chief priests and said,
"What are you willing to give me
if I hand him over to you?"
They paid him thirty pieces of silver,
and from that time on he looked for an opportunity to hand him over.
On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread,
the disciples approached Jesus and said,
"Where do you want us to prepare
for you to eat the Passover?"
He said,
"Go into the city to a certain man and tell him,
'The teacher says, AMy appointed time draws near;
in your house I shall celebrate the Passover with my disciples."'"
The disciples then did as Jesus had ordered,
and prepared the Passover.
When it was evening,
he reclined at table with the Twelve.
And while they were eating, he said,
"Amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me."
Deeply distressed at this,
they began to say to him one after another,
"Surely it is not I, Lord?"
He said in reply,
"He who has dipped his hand into the dish with me
is the one who will betray me.
The Son of Man indeed goes, as it is written of him,
but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed.
It would be better for that man if he had never been born."
Then Judas, his betrayer, said in reply,
"Surely it is not I, Rabbi?"
He answered, "You have said so."

We have made it to Holy Week; tomorrow is Holy Thursday, the first day of the Triduum. Through much of the year, I rejoice in the resurrection, the light of God’s love winning out. But, today, and throughout the Triduum, I think it’s important to spend time with a Jesus who is sorrowed, betrayed, suffering. The Jesus who understands our own experiences of this because he experienced it too.
Jesus is gathered at table with his closest companions to remember Passover, an important day in his religious tradition. In many ways, the Passover meal is a feast. I can think of the ways I gather around the table with my friends and family at Thanksgiving, Christmas, and birthdays. How wonderful it is to eat good food with loved ones, sharing stories, celebrating the occasion before us. This is what Jesus was doing with his closest friends and family. This is the setting where it becomes evident that one of these closest people was going to betray him.
I can only imagine how Jesus felt – alone, sad, hurt. One of his closest friends had betrayed him, turned him in to authorities. Sitting there with Jesus, in these feelings is painful. To watch someone I care so much about in his own suffering is hard to bare. Yet, we all know, there is nothing I can do now but to be here with him in it, just as he is with us in ours.
Let us pray.
Jesus, our sacred companion, in your full humanness, you know of what it feels like - the suffering, pain, sadness, loneliness. In your full divinity, you know that this is not the end of the story, that light and love win. Today, you ask us to be with you in your suffering, to journey alongside you to your death. We cannot alleviate it, we cannot remove it. We ask for the strength to be with you, to imagine your suffering, to know that you know pain. Amen.

GORY GLORY DETAILS
“For Your sake I bear insult, and shame covers My face.” —Psalm 69:8
Since the apostles ran away at the time of Jesus’ crucifixion and those few who stayed would probably not want to talk about the gory details of Jesus’ passion and death, the Gospel writers may not have known or did not want to express many of the details of Jesus’ sufferings. However, some details of His sufferings have been revealed in prophecy and psalms, especially by Isaiah. When we see a crucifix, we always see the front of Jesus. However, Isaiah reveals the condition of His back in addition to His beard and face. The Messiah says: “I gave My back to those who beat Me, My cheeks to those who plucked My beard; My face I did not shield from buffets and spitting” (Is 50:6).
Jesus’ back must have been bruised, almost shredded. Handfuls of hair were pulled out of His bloody beard. His face was beaten almost past recognition, with spit, blood, and dirt pasted on it, “so marred was His look beyond that of man, and His appearance beyond that of mortals” (Is 52:14). His heart was broken. He “looked for sympathy, but there was none; for comforters” (Ps 69:21) but found none. Rather, they put gall in His food and in His thirst they gave Him vinegar to drink (Ps 69:22; cf Lk 23:36). He suffered mercilessly to give us mercy. He suffered because He loves us. These details of His sufferings even more clearly manifest His love for us.
Prayer: Jesus, thank You...
Promise: “My appointed time draws near. I am to celebrate the Passover with My disciples in your house.” —Mt 26:18

Jesus' disciples were put to the test as Jesus prepared to make the final and ultimate sacrifice of his own life for their sake and for all the world. What was different between Peter and Judas? Judas deliberately betrayed his Master while Peter, in a moment of weakness, denied him with an oath and a curse. Judas' act was cold and calculated. Peter, however, never meant to do what he did. He acted impulsively, out of weakness and cowardice. Jesus knew both the strength of Peter's loyalty and the weakness of his resolution. He had a habit of speaking with his heart without thinking through the implications of what he was saying.
Disordered love leads to hurtful desires and wrong deeds
The treachery of Judas, however, is seen at its worst when Jesus makes his appeal by showing special affection to him at his last supper. John says that Satan entered into Judas when he rejected Jesus and left to pursue his evil course. Satan can twist love and turn it into hate. He can turn holiness into pride, discipline into cruelty, affection into complacency. We must be on our guard lest Satan turn us from the love of God and the path which God has chosen for us.
God never withholds his persevering grace and strength to those who cling to him
The Holy Spirit will give us grace and strength in our time of testing. If we submit to Jesus we will walk in the light of his truth and love. If we turn our backs on him we will stumble and fall in the ways of sin and darkness. Are you ready to follow Jesus in his way of the cross?
Give me, O Lord, a steadfast heart which no unworthy thought can drag downwards; an unconquered heart which no tribulation can wear out; an upright heart which no unworthy purpose may tempt aside. Bestow upon me also, O Lord my God, understanding to know you, diligence to seek you, wisdom to find you, and a faithfulness that may finally embrace you; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. (Prayer of Thomas Aquinas)
Psalm 71:1-6,15,17
1 In you, O LORD, do I take refuge; let me never be put to shame!
2 In your righteousness deliver me and rescue me; incline your ear to me, and save me!
3 Be to me a rock of refuge, a strong fortress, to save me, for you are my rock and my fortress.
4 Rescue me, O my God, from the hand of the wicked, from the grasp of the unjust and cruel man.
5 For you, O Lord, are my hope, my trust, O LORD, from my youth.
6 Upon you I have leaned from my birth; you are he who took me from my mother's womb. My praise is continually of you.
15 My mouth will tell of your righteous acts, of your deeds of salvation all the day, for their number is past my knowledge.
17 O God, from my youth you have taught me, and I still proclaim your wondrous deeds.
Daily Quote from the Early Church Fathers: Fight sin and put up with trials, by Augustine of Hippo, 354-430 A.D.
"Your first task is to be dissatisfied with yourself, fight sin, and transform yourself into something better. Your second task is to put up with the trials and temptations of this world that will be brought on by the change in your life and to persevere to the very end in the midst of these things." (excerpt from Commentary on Psalm 59,5)
