1독서

 에제키엘 예언서 37,21ㄴ-28
21 주 하느님이 이렇게 말한다.
나 이제 이스라엘 자손들이 떠나가 사는 민족들 사이에서 그들을 데려오고,
그들을 사방에서 모아다가, 그들의 땅으로 데려가겠다.
22 그들을 그 땅에서, 이스라엘의 산악 지방에서 한 민족으로 만들고,
한 임금이 그들 모두의 임금이 되게 하겠다.
그리하여 다시는 두 민족이 되지 않고,
다시는 결코 두 왕국으로 갈라지지 않을 것이다.
23 그리고 그들이 다시는 자기들의 우상들과 혐오스러운 것들과 온갖 죄악으로
자신을 부정하게 만들지도 않을 것이다.
그들이 저지른 모든 배신에서 내가 그들을 구원하여 정결하게 해 주고 나면,
그들은 나의 백성이 되고 나는 그들의 하느님이 될 것이다.

24 나의 종 다윗이 그들을 다스리는 임금으로서,
그들 모두를 위한 유일한 목자가 될 것이다.
그들은 내 법규들을 따르고 내 규정들을 준수하여 지키면서,
25 내가 나의 종 야곱에게 준 땅,
너희 조상들이 살던 땅에서 살게 될 것이다.
그들만이 아니라 자자손손이 영원히 그곳에서 살며,
나의 종 다윗이 영원히 그들의 제후가 될 것이다.
26 나는 그들과 평화의 계약을 맺으리니,
그것이 그들과 맺는 영원한 계약이 될 것이다.
나는 그들에게 복을 내리고 그들을 불어나게 하며,
나의 성전을 영원히 그들 가운데에 두겠다.
27 이렇게 나의 거처가 그들 사이에 있으면서,
나는 그들의 하느님이 되고 그들은 나의 백성이 될 것이다.
28 나의 성전이 그들 한가운데에 영원히 있게 되면,
그제야 민족들은 내가 주님임을 알게 될 것이다. 


복음

요한. 11,45-56
그때에 45 마리아에게 갔다가
예수님께서 하신 일을 본 유다인들 가운데에서 많은 사람이
예수님을 믿게 되었다.
46 그러나 그들 가운데 몇 사람은 바리사이들에게 가서,
예수님께서 하신 일을 알렸다.
47 그리하여 수석 사제들과 바리사이들이 의회를 소집하고 이렇게 말하였다.
“저 사람이 저렇게 많은 표징을 일으키고 있으니,
우리가 어떻게 하면 좋겠소?
48 저자를 그대로 내버려 두면 모두 그를 믿을 것이고,
또 로마인들이 와서 우리의 이 거룩한 곳과 우리 민족을 짓밟고 말 것이오.”
49 그들 가운데 한 사람으로서 그해의 대사제인 카야파가 말하였다.
“여러분은 아무것도 모르는군요.
50 온 민족이 멸망하는 것보다 한 사람이 백성을 위하여 죽는 것이
여러분에게 더 낫다는 사실을 여러분은 헤아리지 못하고 있소.”
51 이 말은 카야파가 자기 생각으로 한 것이 아니라,
그해의 대사제로서 예언한 셈이다.
곧 예수님께서 민족을 위하여 돌아가시리라는 것과,
52 이 민족만이 아니라 흩어져 있는 하느님의 자녀들을
하나로 모으시려고 돌아가시리라는 것이다.
53 이렇게 하여 그날 그들은 예수님을 죽이기로 결의하였다.
54 그래서 예수님께서는 더 이상 유다인들 가운데로 드러나게 다니지 않으시고,
그곳을 떠나 광야에 가까운 고장의 에프라임이라는 고을에 가시어,
제자들과 함께 그곳에 머무르셨다.
55 유다인들의 파스카 축제가 가까워지자,
많은 사람이 자신을 정결하게 하려고
파스카 축제 전에 시골에서 예루살렘으로 올라갔다.
56 그들은 예수님을 찾다가 성전 안에 모여 서서 서로 말하였다.
“여러분은 어떻게 생각하시오?
그가 축제를 지내러 오지 않겠소?”

Reading 1

Ez 37:21-28

Thus says the Lord GOD:
I will take the children of Israel from among the nations
to which they have come,
and gather them from all sides to bring them back to their land.
I will make them one nation upon the land,
in the mountains of Israel,
and there shall be one prince for them all. 
Never again shall they be two nations,
and never again shall they be divided into two kingdoms.
No longer shall they defile themselves with their idols,
their abominations, and all their transgressions. 
I will deliver them from all their sins of apostasy,
and cleanse them so that they may be my people
and I may be their God.
My servant David shall be prince over them,
and there shall be one shepherd for them all;
they shall live by my statutes and carefully observe my decrees.
They shall live on the land that I gave to my servant Jacob,
the land where their fathers lived;
they shall live on it forever,
they, and their children, and their children's children,
with my servant David their prince forever.
I will make with them a covenant of peace;
it shall be an everlasting covenant with them,
and I will multiply them, and put my sanctuary among them forever.
My dwelling shall be with them;
I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
Thus the nations shall know that it is I, the LORD,
who make Israel holy,
when my sanctuary shall be set up among them forever.

Gospel

Jn 11:45-56

Many of the Jews who had come to Mary
and seen what Jesus had done began to believe in him.
But some of them went to the Pharisees
and told them what Jesus had done. 
So the chief priests and the Pharisees
convened the Sanhedrin and said,
"What are we going to do? 
This man is performing many signs.
If we leave him alone, all will believe in him,
and the Romans will come
and take away both our land and our nation."
But one of them, Caiaphas,
who was high priest that year, said to them,
"You know nothing,
nor do you consider that it is better for you
that one man should die instead of the people,
so that the whole nation may not perish."
He did not say this on his own,
but since he was high priest for that year,
he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation,
and not only for the nation,
but also to gather into one the dispersed children of God.
So from that day on they planned to kill him.
So Jesus no longer walked about in public among the Jews,
but he left for the region near the desert,
to a town called Ephraim,
and there he remained with his disciples.
Now the Passover of the Jews was near,
and many went up from the country to Jerusalem
before Passover to purify themselves.
They looked for Jesus and said to one another
as they were in the temple area, "What do you think?
That he will not come to the feast?

RATTLING BONES

“He prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation — and not for this nation only, but to gather into one all the dispersed children of God.” —John 11:51-52

Ezekiel prophesied that the chosen people were a field of dry bones (Ez 37:1-2). They had been dead for centuries. Then he prophesied restoration, unity, and peace (Ez 37:21ff). How can dry bones be restored? By nothing other than resurrection of the dead. How can we be restored to unity and peace? By nothing less than resurrection.

We’ve tried to improve the human condition with education, law and order, communism, capitalism, secularism, and militarism. However, they were all in vain. The only way to deal with the dry bones of our human condition is resurrection. Therefore, Jesus is the only Answer for humanity because He alone can die and rise. Our only hope is to be united with Jesus’ death and Resurrection by faith in Him.

We are saved by faith from a “dry bones” existence. We express our faith in Jesus through Baptism. We are baptized into Jesus and into His death and Resurrection (Rm 6:3-5). The dry bones rattle and come together (Ez 37:7). We are born again and restored.

A week from today is the Easter Vigil. Many throughout the world will be baptized, and all the baptized will be called to renew their baptismal commitment to Jesus. Give yourself to Jesus, Who has turned dry bones into the abundant life (Jn 10:10).

Prayer:  Jesus, in this upcoming Holy Week, may I become aware of what You have done for me. You alone have made my life worth living.

Promise:  “If we let Him go on like this, the whole world will believe in Him.” —Jn 11:48

Praise:  “God is our refuge and our strength. The Lord of Hosts is with us; our stronghold is the God of Jacob” (Ps 46:2, 8).

 Do you allow fear or opposition to hold you back from doing God's will? Jesus set his face like flint toward Jerusalem, knowing full well what awaited him there (Luke 9:51; Isaiah 50:7). It was Jewish belief that when the high priest asked for God's counsel for the nation, God spoke through him. What dramatic irony that Caiaphas prophesied that Jesus must die for the nation. The prophet Ezekiel announced that God would establish one people, one land, one prince, and one sanctuary forever.


Luke adds to Caiphas's prophecy that Jesus would gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. Jesus came to lay down his life for the many, but not in a foolish reckless manner so as to throw it away before his work was done. He retired until the time had come when nothing would stop his coming to Jerusalem to fulfill his Father's mission.

St. Augustine of Hippo (354-430 AD) wrote:

"The passion of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is the hope of glory and a lesson in patience... He loved us so much that, sinless himself, he suffered for us sinners the punishment we deserved for our sins. How then can he fail to give us the reward we deserve for our righteousness, for he is the source of righteousness? How can he, whose promises are true, fail to reward the saints when he bore the punishment of sinners, though without sin himself? Brethren, let us then fearlessly acknowledge, and even openly proclaim, that Christ was crucified for us; let us confess it, not in fear but in joy, not in shame but in glory."

The way to glory and victory for us is through the cross of Jesus Christ. Are you ready to take up your cross and follow Christ in his way of victory?

Lord Jesus, may we your disciples be ever ready to lay down our lives in conformity to your will, to willingly suffer and die for you, that we may also share in your victory and glory.

Psalm 22:1, 6-10

1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from helping me, from the words of my groaning?
6 But I am a worm, and no man; scorned by men, and despised by the people.
7 All who see me mock at me, they make mouths at me, they wag their heads;
8 "He committed his cause to the LORD; let him deliver him, let him rescue him, for he delights in him!"
9 Yet you are he who took me from the womb; you kept me safe upon my mother's breasts.
10 Upon you was I cast from my birth, and since my mother bore me you have been my God.

Daily Quote from the Early Church Fathers: The crucifixion is always lived, by Augustine of Hippo, 354-430 A.D.

"The crucifixion is something that must continue throughout our life, not for forty days only, although Moses, Elijah, and Christ fasted forty days.
