Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord
Daily Mass : http://www.catholictv.com/shows/daily-mass
Reading 1
Is 7:10-14; 8:10
Ask for a sign from the LORD, your God;
let it be deep as the nether world, or high as the sky!
But Ahaz answered,
"I will not ask! I will not tempt the LORD!"
Then Isaiah said:
Listen, O house of David!
Is it not enough for you to weary people,
must you also weary my God?
Therefore the Lord himself will give you this sign:
the virgin shall be with child, and bear a son,
and shall name him Emmanuel,
which means "God is with us!"
Responsorial Psalm
Ps 40:7-8a, 8b-9, 10, 11
Sacrifice or oblation you wished not,
but ears open to obedience you gave me.
Holocausts or sin-offerings you sought not;
then said I, "Behold I come."
R. Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will.
"In the written scroll it is prescribed for me,
To do your will, O my God, is my delight,
and your law is within my heart!"
R. Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will.
I announced your justice in the vast assembly;
I did not restrain my lips, as you, O LORD, know.
R. Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will.
Your justice I kept not hid within my heart;
your faithfulness and your salvation I have spoken of;
I have made no secret of your kindness and your truth
in the vast assembly.
R. Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will.
Reading 2
Heb 10:4-10
It is impossible that the blood of bulls and goats
take away sins.
For this reason, when Christ came into the world, he said:
"Sacrifice and offering you did not desire,
but a body you prepared for me;
in holocausts and sin offerings you took no delight.
Then I said, 'As is written of me in the scroll,
behold, I come to do your will, O God.'"
First he says, "Sacrifices and offerings,
holocausts and sin offerings,
you neither desired nor delighted in."
These are offered according to the law.
Then he says, "Behold, I come to do your will."
He takes away the first to establish the second.
By this "will," we have been consecrated
through the offering of the Body of Jesus Christ once for all.
Gospel
Lk 1:26-38
The angel Gabriel was sent from God
to a town of Galilee called Nazareth,
to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph,
of the house of David,
and the virgin's name was Mary.
And coming to her, he said,
"Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you."
But she was greatly troubled at what was said
and pondered what sort of greeting this might be.
Then the angel said to her,
"Do not be afraid, Mary,
for you have found favor with God.
Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son,
and you shall name him Jesus.
He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High,
and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father,
and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever,
and of his Kingdom there will be no end."
But Mary said to the angel,
"How can this be,
since I have no relations with a man?"
And the angel said to her in reply,
"The Holy Spirit will come upon you,
and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.
Therefore the child to be born
will be called holy, the Son of God.
And behold, Elizabeth, your relative,
has also conceived a son in her old age,
and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren;
for nothing will be impossible for God."
Mary said, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.
May it be done to me according to your word."
Then the angel departed from her.

I was unfamiliar with the Old Testament lesson for today, so I re-read it more carefully to find the parallels in our times. It seems that at a time of great geopolitical significance, Ahaz was in trouble politically and his faith was shaken. In fact, he was quite frightened by his enemies. Yet, God remained faithful to his people despite the faintheartedness of their leader, Ahaz. Through Isaiah, God is telling Ahaz and us that we need to stand firm in our faith in the presence of danger and call upon God. If not, quite frankly, we place ourselves in even greater danger. That is not easy to do, but there is always an answer. This story is recorded to give us some encouragement.
What amazes me about this story is that Isaiah tells us that God will step in and rescue us even in our weakness, but we do well to recognize that it annoys God. The point is, though, even when we wear down God’s patience, he doesn’t give up on us. God keeps working with us. Throughout history, God has worked through people who are strong in faith and people who are weak to accomplish God’s own saving plan for us. Along the way, however, we are reminded, it is about God’s plan, not ours. We will suffer our own failures in our own endeavors if they don’t align with God’s plan. It is better for us when we identify with God’s plan for our salvation and declare the Lord’s truth and kindness than seek our own vain glory.
Like Mary, when we humbly declare ourselves to be a servant of the Lord, we participate in God’s saving grace. By doing God’s will, we are consecrated through the offering of the Body of Jesus Christ. Nothing else we try, like our sacrifices and offerings, are an acceptable alternative to obediently showing up to do God’s will. I pray today that I “show up” somewhere, somehow……today and everyday I will begin my day with “Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will.”

LOVE LETTER
“You shall conceive and bear a Son and give Him the name Jesus. Great will be His dignity and He will be called Son of the Most High.” —Luke 1:31-32
Today we remember the astonishing fact that God became a baby — a tiny human being attached to the wall of a teenage girl’s uterus. The almighty, infinite God became human flesh smaller than your fingernail. No one ever imagined it or prayed for it.
God’s Incarnation was so astounding that to the present day we don’t know what to think of it. Why would He do such a thing? The only response we can make to the mystery of the Incarnation is: “God is Love” (1 Jn 4:16). He does the unimaginable because He is Love. He became a man because He is Love. He let Himself be crucified and put to death because He is Love. He gives us His Body and Blood in Holy Communion because He is Love.
The announcement of the Annunciation is: “The virgin shall be with Child, and bear a Son, and shall name Him Immanuel” (Is 7:14). The Holy Spirit came upon Mary and the power of the Most High overshadowed her, hence her holy Offspring was called Son of God (Lk 1:35). “The Word became flesh” (Jn 1:14). Love became a man. Alleluia!
Prayer: Father, thank You for loving us so much as to give Your Son so that whoever believes in Him would not perish but have everlasting life (Jn 3:16).
Promise: “Therefore, the Lord Himself will give you this sign: the virgin shall be with Child, and bear a Son.” —Is 7:14
Praise: Alleluia! God so loved the world that He sent His only Son to us (Jn 3:16).

What is the best and sure way to peace, happiness, and abundant life? The prophet Hosea addressed this question with his religious community - the people of Israel. Hosea's people lived in a time of economic anxiety and fear among the nations. They were tempted to put their security in their own possessions and in their political alliances with other nations rather than in God. Hosea called his people to return to God to receive pardon, healing, and restoration. He reminded them that God would "heal their faithlessness and love them freely" (Hosea 14:4). God's ways are right and his wisdom brings strength and blessing to those who obey him.
The grace and power of love and obedience
How does love and obedience to God's law go together? The Pharisees prided themselves in the knowledge of the law and their ritual requirements. They made it a life-time practice to study the 613 precepts of the Old Testament along with the numerous rabbinic commentaries. They tested Jesus to see if he correctly understood the law as they did. Jesus startled them with his profound simplicity and mastery of the law of God and its purpose.
What does God require of us? Simply that we love as he loves! God is love and everything he does flows from his love for us. God loved us first and our love for him is a response to his exceeding grace and kindness towards us. The love of God comes first and the love of neighbor is firmly grounded in the love of God. The more we know of God's love and truth the more we love what he loves and reject what is hateful and contrary to his will.
The love which conquers all
What makes our love for God and his commands grow in us? Faith in God and hope in his promises strengthen us in the love of God. They are essential for a good relationship with God, for being united with him. The more we know of God the more we love him and the more we love him the greater we believe and hope in his promises. The Lord, through the gift of the Holy Spirit, gives us a new freedom to love as he loves (Galatians 5:13). Do you allow anything to keep you from the love of God and the joy of serving others with a generous heart? Paul the Apostle says: hope does not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit which has been given to us (Romans 5:5). Do you know the love which conquers all?
We love you, O our God; and we desire to love you more and more. Grant to us that we may love you as much as we desire, and as much as we ought. O dearest friend, who has so loved and saved us, the thought of whom is so sweet and always growing sweeter, come with Christ and dwell in our hearts; that you keep a watch over our lips, our steps, our deeds, and we shall not need to be anxious either for our souls or our bodies. Give us love, sweetest of all gifts, which knows no enemy. Give us in our hearts pure love, born of your love to us, that we may love others as you love us. O most loving Father of Jesus Christ, from whom flows all love, let our hearts, frozen in sin, cold to you and cold to others, be warmed by this divine fire. So help and bless us in your Son. (Prayer of Anselm, 12th century)
Psalm 81:6-10,14,16
6 "I relieved your shoulder of the burden; your hands were freed from the basket.
7 In distress you called, and I delivered you; I answered you in the secret place of thunder; I tested you at the waters of Meribah. [Selah]
8 Hear, O my people, while I admonish you! O Israel, if you would but listen to me!
9 There shall be no strange God among you; you shall not bow down to a foreign God.
10 I am the LORD your God, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt. Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.
14 I would soon subdue their enemies, and turn my hand against their foes.
16 I would feed you with the finest of the wheat, and with honey from the rock I would satisfy you."
Daily Quote from the Early Church Fathers: The fire of God's love, by Augustine of Hippo,354-430 A.D.
"Gravity keeps everything in its own place. Fire climbs up, while a stone goes down. Elements that are not in their own place are restless until they find it. This applies also to us. My weight is my love; wherever I go, I am driven by it. By the love of God we catch fire ourselves and, by moving up, find our place and our rest." (excerpt from Confessions 13,9)
