Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome
Daily Mass : http://www.catholictv.com/shows/daily-mass
Reading 1
back to the entrance of the temple,
and I saw water flowing out
from beneath the threshold of the temple toward the east,
for the façade of the temple was toward the east;
the water flowed down from the southern side of the temple,
south of the altar.
He led me outside by the north gate,
and around to the outer gate facing the east,
where I saw water trickling from the southern side.
He said to me,
"This water flows into the eastern district down upon the Arabah,
and empties into the sea, the salt waters, which it makes fresh.
Wherever the river flows,
every sort of living creature that can multiply shall live,
and there shall be abundant fish,
for wherever this water comes the sea shall be made fresh.
Along both banks of the river, fruit trees of every kind shall grow;
their leaves shall not fade, nor their fruit fail.
Every month they shall bear fresh fruit,
for they shall be watered by the flow from the sanctuary.
Their fruit shall serve for food, and their leaves for medicine
Responsorial Psalm
God is our refuge and our strength,
an ever-present help in distress.
Therefore, we fear not, though the earth be shaken
and mountains plunge into the depths of the sea.
R. The waters of the river gladden the city of God, the holy dwelling of the Most High!
There is a stream whose runlets gladden the city of God,
the holy dwelling of the Most High.
God is in its midst; it shall not be disturbed;
God will help it at the break of dawn.
R. The waters of the river gladden the city of God, the holy dwelling of the Most High!
The LORD of hosts is with us;
our stronghold is the God of Jacob.
Come! behold the deeds of the LORD,
the astounding things he has wrought on earth.
R. The waters of the river gladden the city of God, the holy dwelling of the Most High!
Reading 2
You are God's building.
According to the grace of God given to me,
like a wise master builder I laid a foundation,
and another is building upon it.
But each one must be careful how he builds upon it,
for no one can lay a foundation other than the one that is there,
namely, Jesus Christ.
Do you not know that you are the temple of God,
and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?
If anyone destroys God's temple,
God will destroy that person;
for the temple of God, which you are, is holy.
Gospel
Since the Passover of the Jews was near,
Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
He found in the temple area those who sold oxen, sheep, and doves,
as well as the money-changers seated there.
He made a whip out of cords
and drove them all out of the temple area, with the sheep and oxen,
and spilled the coins of the money-changers
and overturned their tables,
and to those who sold doves he said,
"Take these out of here,
and stop making my Father's house a marketplace."
His disciples recalled the words of Scripture,
Zeal for your house will consume me.
At this the Jews answered and said to him,
"What sign can you show us for doing this?"
Jesus answered and said to them,
"Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up."
The Jews said,
"This temple has been under construction for forty-six years,
and you will raise it up in three days?"
But he was speaking about the temple of his Body.
Therefore, when he was raised from the dead,
his disciples remembered that he had said this,
and they came to believe the Scripture
and the word Jesus had spoken.

Today Catholics celebrate the feast of the oldest church in Western Christendom. Commissioned by the Emperor Constantine and dedicated by Pope St. Sylvester in 324 AD, the St. John Lateran Basilica is the home church of the Bishop of Rome. I remember visiting the Lateran in younger days and taking an extra look at the celebrant’s chair. “When the Pope speaks ex cathedra, that is where he sits!” I murmured to myself. For all of its symbolic importance, what struck me about the Lateran was its relative obscurity next to the opulence of St. Peter’s Basilica. The Lateran is a grand and beautiful church, but it is not crawling with tourists and pilgrims. It feels like the local church of the Bishop of Rome, which is in keeping with history of today’s feast: it began as a city-wide celebration in Rome, before its expansion to the universal Church in the early 18th century.
Today’s readings remind us that the Church’s ultimate mission is to give life. In the desert climate of ancient Judea, Ezekiel’s vision of fresh water flowing out of the temple offers striking images of hope and life: abundant fish, fruit trees, food, medicine, and the multiplication of “every sort of living creature.” The Temple’s life-giving mission is not inevitable, however. When it becomes a profit-driven vehicle of burdensome taxation and corruption, Jesus makes his feelings abundantly clear in perhaps the most violent scene of his ministry. In his letter to Corinth, St. Paul reminds us that the Church’s life-giving mission belongs to each of us as baptized believers who possess the Spirit of Christ within the unified Body of Christ. Ultimately, the Church’s mission is not to be a corporation, but rather the corporate Body, exemplifying God’s life, love, and unity in the world.
In 1726 Pope Benedict XIII instituted the Feast of the Lateran Basilica to undergird the worldwide unity of the Catholic Church. The Church’s unity is always being tested, as we see so evidently in today’s violent, hyper-polarized, social media age. In response, may we share Jesus’ zeal for his Father’s house, and for every “temple of God” therein.

JESUS IN THE CHURCH
“Zeal for Your house consumes Me.” —John 2:17
Today throughout the world we celebrate the Church, and especially Jesus, the Founder and Head of the Church. Today we celebrate the unity of the Church, her authority in Christ (Mt 16:19), and Jesus’ special presence in the Church.
Jesus is present in the Church universal, for He is her Head (Col 1:18). He is present in the small communities of the Church, for He has promised to be with us in a special way where two or three gather in unity in His name (Mt 18:20). Jesus is present in the church building in the most special and central way of all, for here He is present in the Eucharist, the Blessed Sacrament (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1373).
On this glorious feast day, the Lord is calling us in many ways. He may be calling us to form or join a small Christian community. He is calling us to evangelize and “re-member” the Church. I believe that on this special day the Lord is especially calling us to Eucharistic adoration. Pope St. John Paul II taught: “The Church and the world have a great need for Eucharistic worship. Jesus awaits us in this sacrament of love. Let us not refuse the time to go to meet Him in adoration” (Catechism, 1380).
Love the Church (Eph 5:25). Adore Jesus in church. Let zeal for God and His house consume you (Jn 2:17).
Prayer: Father, because I am living in Christ (see Phil 1:21), may I be living in the Church.
Promise: “Are you not aware that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?” —1 Cor 3:16
Praise: St. John Lateran Basilica reminds us of an easy-to-forget fact: The Catholic Church uses architectural beauty to commemorate and spread the truth of the Gospel. The Lateran Basilica is the oldest patriarchal church in Rome. It was originally the Church of Our Savior.

Are you ready to give the Lord your best, regardless of what it might cost you? Perhaps we are like the laborer in Jesus' parable who expected special favor and reward for going the extra mile? How unfair for the master to compel his servant to give more than what was expected! Don't we love to assert our rights: "I will give only what is required and no more!" But who can satisfy the claims of love?
We are called to serve God and neighbor selflessly and generously
Jesus used this parable of the dutiful servant to explain that we can never put God in our debt or make the claim that God owes us something. We must regard ourselves as God's servants, just as Jesus came "not to be served, but to serve" (Matthew 20:28). Service of God and of neighbor is both a voluntary or free act and a sacred duty. One can volunteer for service or be compelled to do service for one's country or one's family when special needs arise. Likewise, God expects us to give him the worship and praise which is his due. And he gladly accepts the free-will offering of our lives to him and to his service. What makes our offering pleasing to God is the love we express in the act of self-giving. True love is sacrificial, generous, and selfless.
The love of God compels us to give our best
How can we love others selflessly and unconditionally? Scripture tells us that God himself is love (1 John 4:16) - he is the author of life and the source of all true relationships of love and friendship. He created us in love for love, and he fills our hearts with the boundless love that gives whatever is good for the sake of another (Romans 5:5). If we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us (1 John 4:12).
God honors the faithful servant who loves and serves others generously. He is ever ready to work in and through us for his glory. We must remember, however, that God can never be indebted to us. We have no claim on him. His love compels us to give him our best! And when we have done our best, we have simply done our duty. We can never outmatch God in doing good and showing love. God loves us without measure. Does the love of God compel you to give your best?
Lord Jesus, fill my heart with love, gratitude and generosity. Make me a faithful and zealous servant for you. May I generously pour out my life in loving service for you and for others, just as you have so generously poured yourself out in love for me.
Psalm 34:1-3,15-18
1 I will bless the LORD at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
2 My soul makes its boast in the LORD; let the afflicted hear and be glad.
3 O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together!
15 The eyes of the LORD are toward the righteous, and his ears toward their cry.
16 The face of the LORD is against evildoers, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.
17 When the righteous cry for help, the LORD hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles.
18 The LORD is near to the brokenhearted, and saves the crushed in spirit.
Daily Quote from the Early Church Fathers: We are called to humble service, by Ambrose of Milan, 339-397 A.D.
"You do not say to your servant, 'Sit down,' but require more service from him and do not thank him. The Lord also does not allow only one work or labor for you, because so long as we live we must always work.
"Know that you are a servant overwhelmed by very much obedience. You must not set yourself first, because you are called a son of God. Grace must be acknowledged, but nature not overlooked. Do not boast of yourself if you have served well, as you should have done. The sun obeys, the moon complies (Joshua 10:12-13; Baruch 6:60), and the angels serve... Let us not require praise from ourselves nor prevent the judgment of God and anticipate the sentence of the Judge but reserve it for its own time and Judge." (excerpt from EXPOSITION OF THE GOSPEL OF LUKE 8.31-32)
