Reading 1

Rom 8:12-17

Brothers and sisters,
we are not debtors to the flesh,
to live according to the flesh.
For if you live according to the flesh, you will die,
but if by the spirit you put to death the deeds of the body,
you will live.

For those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.
For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear,
but you received a spirit of adoption,
through which we cry, "Abba, Father!"
The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit
that we are children of God,
and if children, then heirs,
heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ,
if only we suffer with him
so that we may also be glorified with him.

Responsorial Psalm

Ps 68:2 and 4, 6-7ab, 20-21

R. (21a) Our God is the God of salvation.
God arises; his enemies are scattered,
and those who hate him flee before him.
But the just rejoice and exult before God;
they are glad and rejoice.
R. Our God is the God of salvation.
The father of orphans and the defender of widows
is God in his holy dwelling.
God gives a home to the forsaken;
he leads forth prisoners to prosperity.
R. Our God is the God of salvation.
Blessed day by day be the Lord,
who bears our burdens; God, who is our salvation.
God is a saving God for us;
the LORD, my Lord, controls the passageways of death.
R. Our God is the God of salvation.

Gospel

Lk 13:10-17

Jesus was teaching in a synagogue on the sabbath.
And a woman was there who for eighteen years
had been crippled by a spirit;
she was bent over, completely incapable of standing erect.
When Jesus saw her, he called to her and said,
"Woman, you are set free of your infirmity."
He laid his hands on her,
and she at once stood up straight and glorified God.
But the leader of the synagogue,
indignant that Jesus had cured on the sabbath,
said to the crowd in reply,
"There are six days when work should be done.
Come on those days to be cured, not on the sabbath day."
The Lord said to him in reply, "Hypocrites!
Does not each one of you on the sabbath
untie his ox or his ass from the manger
and lead it out for watering?
This daughter of Abraham,
whom Satan has bound for eighteen years now,
ought she not to have been set free on the sabbath day
from this bondage?"
When he said this, all his adversaries were humiliated;
and the whole crowd rejoiced at all the splendid deeds done by him.

“There are six days when work should be done.
Come on those days to be cured, not on the sabbath day.”
 - Luke

A student who had been struggling to stay sober told me after a summer school night class that he BADLY needed immediate help to keep from drinking. Could I aid him?

Unfortunately, I had to get home to my two young children so I couldn’t stay.  The Counseling Center was closed and this wasn’t a Public Safety matter.

So I called my friend, the late Fr. Dick Hauser S.J., one of our kindest and wisest Jesuits, who knew how to handle such situations from his years as a dorm and fraternity chaplain.

Like other members of the Jesuit community, he lived on campus and readily responded to this inconvenient need for help – just like Jesus in today’s gospel.

While I wasn’t asking Dick to violate the law, as Jesus did in curing the woman on the sabbath, I was asking him to spend hours helping a student he didn’t know when he must have been exhausted from running a summer program. He got the student through the crisis because like most Jesuits I know, he was a “man for others” 24-7.  That’s why they call it the Society of JESUS.

Years later the student, now a successful professional, wrote to tell me how much Creighton’s care for him meant.

This incident illustrates the most important lesson Jesus teaches in today’s gospel—the need to prioritize the needs of people over laws, structures, and our own convenience.

As an old farm girl, I love the way Jesus makes his critics look like fools by asking if they cared for animals on the Sabbath. It reminded me of my dad saying that no matter what happened, you had to feed the cows.

This reading also forced me to examine my conscience about the times I have failed to meet the needs of others because of something I considered more pressing, sometimes legitimate, sometimes less so.

But I think Jesus understands. He is compassionate as we struggle to lead our messy lives, responding to various needs and pressures. Just don’t tell him you only help during office hours!

LIFE IN THE SPIRIT

“If you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the spirit you put to death the evil deeds of the body, you will live.” —Romans 8:13

If we live according to the flesh, that is, according to our fallen human nature, we will die, that is, be damned in hell. It is therefore of supreme importance to be freed from the slavery of our fallen nature. We put to death the prideful, self-centered deeds of our fallen nature by the work of the Holy Spirit. Thus, we must be born again of water and Spirit (Jn 3:5), and we must live in the Spirit to live our Baptisms. “The flesh lusts against the Spirit and the Spirit against the flesh; the two are directly opposed” (Gal 5:17). “Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified their flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s lead” (Gal 5:24-25).

Our life in the Spirit is so precious. It is literally a matter of life and death, of salvation or damnation. Jesus prayed that we would be guarded from the evil one (Jn 17:15). We must be vigilant to guard our life in the Spirit from sin and occasions of sin, especially the raw sewage in much of our modern media.

Moreover, our life in the Spirit is so precious that we must make it a priority to nourish it through Mass, Confession, Bible study, Christian community life, and constant prayer.

Our baptized life in the Spirit is our lifeline to the Lord. Protect, nourish, and live fully life in the Spirit.

Prayer:  Father, may I never quench (1 Thes 5:19) or grieve the Holy Spirit (Eph 4:30).

Promise:  “Should not this daughter of Abraham here who has been in the bondage of Satan for eighteen years have been released from her shackles on the sabbath?” —Lk 13:16

Praise:  Mark and Sarah’s lives, family, and marriage were enriched by a Life in the Spirit seminar.

  Is there anything that keeps you bound up or oppressed? Infirmity, whether physical, emotional, or spiritual, can befall us for a variety of reasons and God can use it for some purpose that we do not understand. When Jesus encountered an elderly woman who was spent of her strength and unable to stand upright, he gave her words of faith and freedom and he restored her to health. She must have suffered much, both physically and spiritually for eighteen years, since Jesus remarked that Satan had bound her. How can Satan do this? The Scriptures indicate that Satan can act in the world with malice and can cause injuries of a spiritual nature, and indirectly even of a physical nature. Satan's power, however, is not infinite. He cannot prevent the building up of God's kingdom or reign in our lives.

Jesus wants to set free us from oppression
Jesus demonstrates the power and authority of God's kingdom in releasing people who are oppressed by physical and emotional sickness, by personal weakness and sin, and by the harassment of the evil one in their lives. It took only one word from Jesus to release this woman instantly of her infirmity. Do you believe in the power of Jesus to release you from affliction and oppression?

The Jewish leaders were indignant that Jesus would perform such a miraculous work on the Sabbath, the holy day of rest. They were so caught up in their ritual observance of the Sabbath that they lost sight of God's mercy and goodness. Jesus healed on the Sabbath because God does not rest from showing his mercy and love, ever. God's word has power to change us, spiritually, physically, and emotionally. Is there anything that keeps you bound up or that weighs you down? Let the Lord speak his word to you and give you freedom.

Lord Jesus, you grant freedom to those who seek you. Give me freedom to walk in your way of love and to praise and worship you always. Show me how I can bring your mercy and healing love to those in need around me.

Psalm 1:1-6

1 Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
2 but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night.
3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water, that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.
4 The wicked are not so, but are like chaff which the wind drives away.
5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;
6 for the LORD knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.

Daily Quote from the Early Church Fathers: Jesus overcomes death and destruction, by Cyril of Alexandria (376-444 AD)

"The incarnation of the Word and his assumption of human nature took place for the overthrow of death, destruction and the envy harbored against us by the wicked Serpent, who was the first cause of evil. This plainly is proved to us by facts themselves. He set free the daughter of Abraham from her protracted sickness, calling out and saying, 'Woman, you are loosed from your infirmity.' A speech most worthy of God, and full of supernatural power! With the royal inclination of his will, he drives away the disease. He also lays his hands upon her. It says that she immediately was made straight. It is now also possible to see that his holy flesh bore in it the power and activity of God. It was his own flesh, and not that of some other Son beside him, distinct and separate from him, as some most impiously imagine."(excerpt from COMMENTARY ON LUKE, HOMILY 96)
