Daily Mass : http://www.catholictv.com/shows/daily-mass
Reading 1 Rom 1:1-7
called to be an Apostle and set apart for the Gospel of God,
which he promised previously through his prophets in the holy Scriptures,
the Gospel about his Son, descended from David according to the flesh,
but established as Son of God in power
according to the Spirit of holiness
through resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Through him we have received the grace of apostleship,
to bring about the obedience of faith,
for the sake of his name, among all the Gentiles,
among whom are you also, who are called to belong to Jesus Christ;
to all the beloved of God in Rome, called to be holy.
Grace to you and peace from God our Father
and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Responsorial Psalm
Ps 98:1bcde, 2-3ab, 3cd-4
Sing to the LORD a new song,
for he has done wondrous deeds;
His right hand has won victory for him,
his holy arm.
R. The Lord has made known his salvation.
The LORD has made his salvation known:
in the sight of the nations he has revealed his justice.
He has remembered his kindness and his faithfulness
toward the house of Israel.
R. The Lord has made known his salvation.
All the ends of the earth have seen
the salvation by our God.
Sing joyfully to the LORD, all you lands;
break into song; sing praise.
R. The Lord has made known his salvation.
Gospel
Lk 11:29-32
"This generation is an evil generation;
it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it,
except the sign of Jonah.
Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites,
so will the Son of Man be to this generation.
At the judgment
the queen of the south will rise with the men of this generation
and she will condemn them,
because she came from the ends of the earth
to hear the wisdom of Solomon,
and there is something greater than Solomon here.
At the judgment the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation
and condemn it,
because at the preaching of Jonah they repented,
and their is something greater than Jonah here."

Today’s story in the Gospel of Luke seems to have many messages. And, I must admit, I read it a few times to see if I could wrap my arms around all that is there. But, as I continued to read and reflect on the messaging from Jesus, one particular part stood out that I did not pay any attention to during the first couple of reads. The first two words that Jesus is quoted as saying in today’s Gospel are, “This generation…” I think the reason this stands out is because he did not say, “You are evil, and seek a sign…” He says, “This generation is evil, and seeks a sign…” He does not call out individuals as evil or bad. Rather, he calls out something larger. He uses “This generation” as language to tell the people to wake up and look at the corporate, the system, the establishment, the bureaucracy, and the status quo. This is place to look for the disconnects between evil and good.
This message resonates with me because today’s culture (much like during Jesus’ time) tends to only focus on individual needs, wants, desires, outcomes, and achievements. But, at the same time we are so heavily influenced by our social structure and experiences in a way that doesn’t allow us to make the connections between our individualism and our collectivism. We tend to be so focused on our individual issues that we ignore “the system” issues that seem to drive our individual behaviors – and it seems to create a disconnect and confusion about good and evil. For example, it’s okay for democrats and republicans to disrespectfully berate each other, but it’s not okay for kids to do it on the playground. It’s justifiable for a country to send missile strikes into another country, but it’s bad when individual’s within the same country kill each other. It’s okay that institutions cover-up the immoral behavior of its members to protect “the brand”, but it’s bad when individuals steal, cheat, lie, and abuse each other. And, all citizens are expected to have national pride and respect the flag, but personal pride and vanity are criticized.
The messaging is confusing. It seems to be justifiable for the larger “system” to do evil, but not the individual. By addressing the crowd as “This generation” Jesus is asking them to pay attention to the “institutions” in which they as individual’s give permission to behave badly – and perhaps also asking them to reflect on how it influences their individual behaviors. He tells them that “no signs will be given” and also that “something greater” is going on here. It seems that Jesus is telling the crowd that they already have everything they need. Just wake up and see The Real as their guide, rather than the status quo they have become accustomed to following.

LIVING TO PROCLAIM THE GOSPEL
“Through Him we have been favored with apostleship, that we may spread His name.” —Romans 1:5
Paul, “set apart to proclaim the gospel of God” (Rm 1:1), wrote to the Romans to prepare them to be a home-base for future evangelism in Spain (Rm 15:24, 28). Paul was always thinking of reaching more people for Christ. He would use a courtroom as a forum for preaching the Gospel (Acts 26:1ff). He even stopped to convert the jailer during a jailbreak (Acts 16:28ff). Paul repeatedly risked his life to preach the Gospel (2 Cor 11:23ff). He was single-hearted; evangelism was the only thing on his mind. He would pay any price to win to Christ as many as possible (1 Cor 9:19).
We have seven more weeks left in the Church year. In the last forty-five weeks, how many people have we tried to lead to the Lord? The fields are ripe for a great harvest (Jn 4:35), but the workers are still few (Mt 9:37). If we’re not evangelizing, are we evangelized? Let’s repent of not sharing the Gospel and make the rest of this year the greatest evangelistic drive of our lives.
Prayer: Father, give me a new Pentecost that leads to a new evangelization.
Promise: “She came from the farthest corner of the world to listen to the wisdom of Solomon, but you have a greater than Solomon here.” —Lk 11:31
Praise: Pope St. John XXIII called for a renewal of both the clergy and the laity by convoking the Second Vatican Council in 1962. Holy Spirit, come renew Your Church (see Ps 104:30).

Do you pay attention to warning signs? Many fatalities could be avoided if people took the warning signs seriously. When the religious leaders demanded a sign from Jesus, he gave them a warning to avert spiritual disaster. It was characteristic of the Jews that they demanded "signs" from God's messengers to authenticate their claims. When the religious leaders pressed Jesus to give proof for his claims he says in so many words that he is God's sign and that they need no further evidence from heaven than his own person.
The people of Nineveh were saved because they accepted the sign and message of Jonah
The Ninevites recognized God's warning when Jonah spoke to them, and they repented (Jonah 3:1-10). And the Queen of Sheba recognized God's wisdom in Solomon (1 Kings 10:1-10). Jonah was God's sign and his message was the message of God for the people of Nineveh. Unfortunately the religious leaders were not content to accept the signs right before their eyes. They had rejected the message of John the Baptist and now they reject Jesus as God's Anointed One (Messiah) and they fail to heed his message.
Jesus' death and resurrection brings us new ever lasting life
Simeon had prophesied at Jesus' birth that he was "destined for the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed so that inner thoughts of many will be revealed" (Luke 2:34- 35). Just as Jonah spent 3 days in the belly of the whale before he delivered the Ninevites from death and destruction, Jesus likewise spent 3 days in the tomb before rising again to save us from sin and death and bring us new life. Jesus confirmed his message of good news and deliverance with many miracles in preparation for the greatest sign of all - his resurrection on the third day.
The Lord Jesus came to set us free from slavery to sin and hurtful desires. Through the gift of the Holy Spirit he pours his love into our hearts that we may understand his will for our lives and walk in his way of holiness (Romans 5:5). God searches our hearts, not to condemn us, but to show us where we need his saving grace and help. He calls us to seek him with true repentance, humility, and the honesty to see our sins for what they really are - a rejection of his love and will for our lives.
Listen to God's word of wisdom and you will find true life and everlasting joy
God will transform us if we listen to his word and allow his Holy Spirit to work in our lives. Ask the Lord to renew your mind and to increase your thirst for his wisdom. James says that the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, without uncertainty or insincerity (James 3:17). A double-minded person cannot receive this kind of wisdom. The single of heart desire one thing alone - God's pleasure. God wants us to delight in him and to know the freedom of his truth and love. Do you thirst for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord (Hebrews 12:14)?
Psalm 98:1-4
1 O sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things! His right hand and his holy arm have gotten him victory.
2 The LORD has made known his victory, he has revealed his vindication in the sight of the nations.
3 He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness to the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God.
4 Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises!
Daily Quote from the Early Church Fathers: The sign of Jonah, by an anonymous early author from the Greek church
"'What is the sign of Jonah? The stumbling block of the cross. So it is not the disputers of knowledge who will be saved but those who believe true teaching. For the cross of Christ is indeed a stumbling block to those who dispute knowledge but salvation to those who believe. Paul testifies to this: 'But we, for our part, preach the crucified Christ - to the Jews indeed a stumbling block and to the Gentiles foolishness, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ, the power of God and the wisdom of God' (1 Corinthians 1:23-24). Why do the Jews seek signs and the Greeks seek wisdom? God pointed to the sign of the stumbling block of the cross to both the Jews and the Greeks. Thus those who wish to find Christ not through faith but through wisdom will perish on the stumbling block of foolishness. Those who wish to know the Son of God not through faith but through a demonstration of signs will remain trapped in their disbelief, falling on the stumbling block of his death. It is no small wonder that the Jews, considering the death of Christ, thought he was merely a man, when even Christians - as they purport to be but really are not - because of his death are reluctant to declare the only begotten, the crucified, as incomparable majesty." (excerpt from INCOMPLETE WORK ON MATTHEW, HOMILY 30, the Greek fathers).
