Reading 1

 Jon 3:1-10

The word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time:
"Set out for the great city of Nineveh,
and announce to it the message that I will tell you."
So Jonah made ready and went to Nineveh,
according to the LORD's bidding.
Now Nineveh was an enormously large city;
it took three days to go through it.
Jonah began his journey through the city,
and had gone but a single day's walk announcing,
"Forty days more and Nineveh shall be destroyed,"
when the people of Nineveh believed God;
they proclaimed a fast and all of them, great and small,
put on sackcloth.

When the news reached the king of Nineveh,
he rose from his throne, laid aside his robe,
covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in the ashes.
Then he had this proclaimed throughout Nineveh,
by decree of the king and his nobles:
"Neither man nor beast, neither cattle nor sheep,
shall taste anything;
they shall not eat, nor shall they drink water.
Man and beast shall be covered with sackcloth
and call loudly to God;
every man shall turn from his evil way
and from the violence he has in hand.
Who knows, God may relent and forgive,
and withhold his blazing wrath,
so that we shall not perish."
When God saw by their actions how they turned from their evil way,
he repented of the evil that he had threatened to do to them;
he did not carry it out.

Responsorial Psalm

Ps 130:1b-2, 3-4ab, 7-8

R. (3) If you, O Lord, mark iniquities, who can stand?
Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD
LORD, hear my voice!
Let your ears be attentive
to my voice in supplication.
R. If you, O Lord, mark iniquities, who can stand?
If you, O LORD, mark iniquities,
LORD, who can stand?
But with you is forgiveness,
that you may be revered.
R. If you, O Lord, mark iniquities, who can stand?
Let Israel wait for the LORD,
For with the LORD is kindness
and with him is plenteous redemption;
And he will redeem Israel
from all their iniquities.
R. If you, O Lord, mark iniquities, who can stand?

Gospel

Lk 10:38-42

Jesus entered a village
where a woman whose name was Martha welcomed him.
She had a sister named Mary
who sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak.
Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said,
"Lord, do you not care
that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving?
Tell her to help me."
The Lord said to her in reply,
"Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things.
There is need of only one thing.
Mary has chosen the better part
and it will not be taken from her."

Today’s reflection points to the crucial need to listen to and then to follow God’s will for our lives.  However, we cannot leave it there, as thankfully there is another resounding truth in today’s Word.

We begin with the story of Jonah.  It would seem that this story was made a part of God’s Holy Word for the explicit purpose of letting us know how important it is to listen to and follow God’s directives for our lives.  It is interesting that the story for today picks up in chapter 3.  It doesn’t touch on Jonah’s refusal to follow God’s directive for him in the first place and the consequences of that rejection.  Rather it begins with Jonah heading to Nineveh, he had learned his lesson and was now following God’s will.  This part of the story switches from a focus upon Jonah to a focus upon the inhabitants of Nineveh.  They obviously had been living in sin, provoking God to threaten to destroy their entire city because of that sin.  Jonah had just began delivering God’s message of destruction when the people, both great and small, heard Jonah’s warning from God and turned from their evil ways.  They not only listened to God’s word, but they followed it.  Just as Luke pointed out in today’s Alleluia: “Blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.”

The importance of attentively listening to God is further emphasized in today’s Gospel story of Martha and Mary.  In this story, Mary clearly had other responsibilities to help her sister – worldly responsibilities – but ignored them to listen to Jesus.  She understood what was of highest importance, what deserved top prioritization.  Jesus put it so clearly: “There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her.”  He reminds us so powerfully that the ONE THING is a devoted attention to our triune God.

Knowing all his, I am shocked and disappointed at how often I let the cares and worries of this world take over my focus.  Jesus was so profoundly clear to us that NOTHING else compares with the importance of keeping our focus solely on Him.

The resounding truth throughout today’s message thankfully goes beyond our need to listen to and follow God’s will for our lives.  Yes, we so often fail at both.   Yet, thankfully, we serve a God of Divine Mercy.  Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska spent her life listening to God and recording those messages in her diary.  She clearly laid out “God’s loving message of Divine Mercy”.  That glorious fact saved Jonah.  Not only did God save him from drowning, something he clearly deserved, but it also prompted God to deliver the message to him a “second time” – giving Jonah a second chance.  It was that saving grace that prevented God’s destruction of Nineveh, even though they deserved destruction.  Their repentance resulted in God’s forgiveness, his Divine Mercy.

Today’s Psalm points out that no one can stand because of their iniquities.  Of course that includes each of us.  Like Jonah and the inhabitants of Nineveh, we often fail to listen to and follow our God and Father.  Yet as the Psalm points out – thankfully - with our God is forgiveness, kindness, and plenteous redemption.

Dear Heavenly Father, open our hearts and minds to your still small voice.  Help us to resist the temptation of allowing the struggles of this world to crowd out our focus upon You and Your will for our lives.  Forgive us and help us.  Thank You so much for your truly Divine Mercy.  In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.  Amen

PURE LOVE ALONE

“The word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time.” —Jonah 3:1

After spending some time in the belly of a huge fish, Jonah changed his mind and obeyed the Lord (Jon 3:1-3). However, Jonah did not obey the Lord out of love. Jonah went reluctantly to Nineveh and was angry when 120,000 Ninevites repented and were spared destruction (see Jon 4:1).

Are you doing the right thing for a less than best reason? For example, do you obey God only to avoid hell? This is a good reason to obey God. However, our love for God is the best reason for doing anything.

Moreover, we must do everything at least partially because we love God, for without love even those things done for good reasons profit us nothing (1 Cor 13:3). God is Love (1 Jn 4:16); therefore, everything done in God must be done in love.

We must not only do everything in love, but also with at least as much love as our first love for the Lord. If we lose our first love, the Lord will put out our lamp-stand, that is, stop much of our activity (Rv 2:4-5).

Finally, the Lord will only temporarily let us live with mixed motives of love and other incentives. He will for a time take away our benefits from being Christian. Then the only reason for loving Him will be “love.”

Prayer:  Father, purify me to love You unconditionally. Give me pure love.

Promise:  “She had a sister named Mary, who seated herself at the Lord’s feet and listened to His words.” —Lk 10:39

Praise:  Bl. Francis was a humble Redemptorist priest in New Orleans in the mid-1800s. Numerous miracles of healing are attributed to his intercession, including healing of paralysis and leukemia.

Does the peace of Christ reign in your home and in your personal life? Jesus loved to visit the home of Martha and Mary and enjoyed their gracious hospitality. In this brief encounter we see two very different temperaments in Martha and Mary. Martha loved to serve, but in her anxious manner of waiting on Jesus, she caused unrest. Mary, in her simple and trusting manner, waited on Jesus by sitting attentively at his feet. She instinctively knew that what the Lord and Teacher most wanted at that moment was her attentive presence.

Give your concerns and pre-occupations to the Lord
Anxiety and preoccupation keep us from listening and from giving the Lord our undivided attention. The Lord bids us to give him our concerns and anxieties because he is trustworthy and able to meet any need we have. His grace frees us from needless concerns and preoccupation. Do you seek the Lord attentively? And does the Lord find a welcomed and honored place in your home?

Always welcome the Lord into your home and heart
The Lord Jesus desires that we make a place for him, not only in our hearts, but in our homes and in the daily circumstances of our lives as well. We honor the Lord when we offer to him everything we have and everything we do. After all, everything we have is an outright gift from God (1 Chronicles 29:14). Paul the Apostle urges us to give God glory in everything: "Whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him" (Colossians 3:17).

When you sit, eat, sleep and when you entertain your friends and guests, remember that the Lord Jesus is also the guest of your home. Scripture tells us that when Abraham opened his home and welcomed three unknown travelers, he welcomed the Lord who blessed him favorably for his gracious hospitality (Genesis 18:1-10; Hebrews 13:2). The Lord wants us to bring him glory in the way we treat others and use the gifts he has graciously given to us. God, in turn, blesses us with his gracious presence and fills us with joy.

Lord Jesus, to be in your presence is life and joy for me. Free me from needless concerns and preoccupations that I may give you my undivided love and attention.

Psalm 130:1-8

1 Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD!
2 Lord, hear my voice! Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications!
3 If you, O LORD, should mark iniquities, Lord, who could stand?
4 But there is forgiveness with you, that you may be feared.
5 I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, and in his word I hope;
6 my soul waits for the LORD more than watchmen for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning.
7 O Israel, hope in the LORD! For with the LORD there is steadfast love, and with him is plenteous redemption.
8 And he will redeem Israel from all his iniquities.

Daily Quote from the Early Church Fathers: The Body of Christ needs hearers and doers of the Word, by Ambrose of Milan, 339-397 A.D.

"'Virtue does not have a single form. In the example of Martha and Mary, there is added the busy devotion of the one and the pious attention of the other to the Word of God, which, if it agrees with faith, is preferred even to the very works, as it is written: 'Mary has chosen the good portion, which shall not be taken away from her.' So let us also strive to have what no one can take away from us, so that not careless but diligent hearing may be granted to us. For even the seeds of the heavenly Word itself are likely to be taken away if they are sowed by the wayside (Luke 8:5,12). Let the desire for wisdom lead you as it did Mary. It is a greater and more perfect work. Do not let service divert the knowledge of the heavenly Word... Nor is Martha rebuked in her good serving, but Mary is preferred because she has chosen the better part for herself, for Jesus abounds with many blessings and bestows many gifts. And therefore the wiser chooses what she perceives as foremost."(excerpt from EXPOSITION OF THE GOSPEL OF LUKE 7.83-86)
